We were told to give DuFour a try, and very glad we did! Located in South Berwick Maine in a lovely inn, there are several warm, comfortable dining rooms. Plenty of free parking out back as well. Service was on point with a great server and our food was timed from the kitchen perfectly. The menu is a little on the smaller side, with only a few specials added our evening, but there really is something for everyone I would say. We thought the food was very good, with small creative takes on some classic ingredients. We were dining with friends who we had not seen in a bit and our waiter gave us plenty of time to settle before ordering and we were never felt rushed. I did not expect to find this level of fine dining in South Berwick, but there you go. If in the area, don't hesitate to stop in. read more

For starters, Dufour is located in a beautiful venue that is partnered with the Stage Neck in. The space balances old rustic aesthetics and modernized fixtures to give it a unique warm feel. There is a variety of seating options ranging from a fairly large bar, parlor seating, dining room seating, and in the summer months, porch seating! The menu at Dufour is definitely upscale American, but there are some Mediterranean and French influences, which gives the menu a diverse offering of options. On a recent trip, my partner and I started off with the cured duck which came with whipped chevre, pickled blackberries and a blackberry reduction. This was a highlight of the night, and definitely something we would get again. Additionally, for dinner, we ordered the halibut with came with curried lentils and the scallops with a parsnip puree. Overall, the food was appropriately seasoned and the serving sizes were on the larger end! My only critique was the service. While the staff were nice, for the price point of the restaurant, the staff just seemed a bit scattered. There was an event happening in one of the rooms, so I think it may have had the staff on edge, which then resulted in the staff being a little frantic. This impacted our general feeling of Dufour, as it was a Friday night and we wanted to go to a relaxed environment with good food. Will I go back? For sure. As I mentioned, the food was great with large portions, but I am hopeful that the service was a one time hiccup. read more

We always enjoy coming here. It's a place we like to take friends and family, confident everyone will find something they like and have a nice time. They keep the menu fresh and updated from season to season, offering a good variety of options (including gluten free and vegetarian choices). All the servers are very welcoming and happy to discuss ideas for both food and drink selections. On our most recent visit, Colin gave us very helpful suggestions when we asked about cocktails, and did a great job of pacing our experience so it wasn't too slow or rushed. Excellent experience for brunch. It was not very busy so we got lots of attention. The menu items were first class. Wait staff very professional. My only complaint is that there was not a healthy choice. I recommend at least a simple item like a fruit bowl with yogurt or granola or oatmeal. Attended a wedding nearby and stayed at the Stage House Inn, where Dufour is located. There are a handful of restaurants in South Berwick and it definitely seems like Dufour would be the best fit for a classy dinner date. Food is pricier compared to other places in town, but you definitely get what you pay for! Portions were large and the quality of the food was fantastic. Our server was very friendly and was able to share many suggestions for places to check out around town. We were turned away from a tavern in town because they were immediately overwhelmed by guests from the wedding coming over for dinner.. and to be honest, I'm kind of glad we were! I think we definitely had a better experience at Dufour than we would have elsewhere. read more

Date night and a new place to try. We did the usual google search for menu and ensured that the options would meet our dietary needs. The menu provided many options and very appealing. The restaurant almost looks like it should be the town hall for this nice little town. When the weather is warmer, the large wrap around porch and lawn space could offer great seating and social space. The inside was very spacious and seating was spaced for the most part. The upstairs is part of an Inn and can only imagine how nice the rooms would be. The menu options looked great and we were excited for the evening. The space was great and the staff was friendly. The presentation of our apps and main courses were also fantastic. The charcuterie was presented nicely and tasted awesome. The combinations of spicy, sweet and sours was just right. The whole board was the best. For dinner we had Scottish Salmon and the Atlantic Halibut. Again, the presentation was beautiful. It looked and smelled incredible. Initially, the food was palatable. But as we continued to eat, we both noticed that both our dishes were over salted. Now, I say this and though the salt was a bit much, the meal was good, but could have been great. Well, I never write reviews. Especially negative ones. I feel it is cowardly. However, in this instance I complained in person and honestly felt dismissed. After much buzz about the amazing place Dufour, I decided to reserve the patio for my daughter's graduation brunch. There were 9 of us. We were just totally ignored from start to finish. Food took over 1.5 hours from ordering to arrive and there was hardly anyone in the restaurant. When asked how long it would be, we were told twice that the food was coming out now. We did not receive a sorry, not a biscuit, nothing. Finally I had enough and complained to the "manager" at the front desk. He was taken back by my displeasure and honestly reacted like a deer in headlights. They did discount the bill, which was nice of them. However, the service and lack of hospitality was memorable. Not to mention that my steak and eggs that was supposed to come with hanger steak, was more like sliced beef prime rib. I would just think that the service at one of the nicest places around would be some of the best service around as well. Oh well. I'm gonna eat at home. read more

Excellent dinner and superior service. Sat at the bar and the bartender was very good, was able to sample a couple of red wines on the specialty menu which helped me make my decision. My wife had a pear bourbon cocktail that was incredible. I had the tuna steak special and it was fantastic, my wife had the mussels for her meal and they were some of the best we have ever had - they were cooked with sausage and a peanut sauce/ broth. Absolutely our favorite place to dine. Even though we live minutes from downtown Portsmouth, NH which has so many places to eat, we find ourselves enjoying dinner or brunch at this 1800's Inn. It has been lovingly restored and the Staff enjoys sharing details about it's history and charm. But, above all, the menu is outstanding. It changes frequently enough so that we can return over and over again and have new choices every time. Greg is an outstanding Host. We went to Dufour for the first time. They did a fantastic job restoring this beautiful old building. We sat in the parlor which was small and intimate. Our waitress was very attentive. We had buffalo cauliflower for our appetizer which was amazing . I had the special which was head on shrimp, clams, and polenta. Overall it was pretty good. My partner got a steak frites which he felt was okay. The dessert was okay as well. It was a okay but I felt it was slightly over priced for the quality. I also agree with some of the precious reviews that some of the food was over salted. read more

Was in town for a wedding, and my friend who is was getting married insisted we come here as his best loca dining reco. I'm definitely glad he did! Dufour is in a small old inn, which itself is very nice. The restaurant has a dining room, a tavern, and an outdoor space. All 3 were unique with the Tavern's large bar and stained glass windows probably being the coolest. With Covid seating was well separated, which did crate a crunch as the previous table hadn't cleared out for our reservation. The staff couldn't have been nicer, and we ended up chilling on the outdoor patio area while our table freed up. Didn't stick around as it was slightly chilly with the temp expected to drop, but the service was excellent throughout anyway. For a drink I got the une nuit dans maine (1 night in Maine), which I someone pronounced correctly to the surprise of all. This was a really well made whiskey-based cocktail, with a blueberry/vanilla bean-infused bourbon, spiced maple syrup, and bitters. I wish I had gotten more than 1. Instead I had a Bissell Brothers' Substance IPA; did this given the hype and it was excellently made. But a really special whiskey cocktail is hard to come by, as despite my love for them, I am not adept at making them. Sadly nobody wanted an appetizer, so I just got the halibut for my main. This came accompanied by lobster, mashed potato, onions, asparagus, and tarragon lemon butter. This was a really good dish. Halibut was clearly fresh and cooked perfectly. Butter was addictive, and while lobster was added it didn't steal the show. I just wish it had been a larger portion, but to be fair they may portion it to allow for multiple courses at a place like this. My wife got the hanger steak and loved it as well. Wish I had tried more here. Definitely a special restaurant that knows what they're doing. If I'm back around here anytime soon, I will be coming again and eating much more! read more

The Dufour restaurant is located in the newly opened Stagehouse Inn in downtown South Berwick, Maine. We were excited to have a new eatery in town and made reservations for a room in the Inn and dinner for Valentine's Day. The Inn staff were wonderful during the reservation process, helping us with some special requests. I will write about the Inn itself in a different review. The dinner we had was incredible! My wife had the Poached Seckel Pear salad to start and the Scottish Salmon as her entrée. The salad was a nice portion with the pears nicely complimented by a bed of arugula and a light dressing. The salmon came with grilled radicchio and chicory as well as some incredible beet gnocchi! The fish was done perfectly and tasted fresh. I had the Roasted Beet Salad to start and it too was excellent. The balance of the beets, candied walnuts, and greens was perfect and the dressing was very nice. I had the Beef Short Ribs for my entrée. The meat was tender and very flavorful - perfectly done. The horseradish potato purée and baby carrots were a perfect compliment to the short ribs. We shared an order of parmesan rosemary truffle fries with roasted garlic aioli (yes, we over-indulged but we were happy!) and they were just as wonderful as everything else. We will absolutely come back to try Dufour's other dishes and, as South Berwick residents, we'll be bringing our friends with us! read more

I've been here 3 times since the opening and each time was memorable. The ambiance is lovely, set up beautifully and thoughtfully. The real star is the food. The menus have been carefully executed and well plated. I've gotten the burger, most recent salmon entree and the hanger steak, along with the tried and true Buffalo cauliflower. Yet again, we went to this restaurant on a Friday when they were also hosting a cocktail party for wedding guests. It was disaster. They did not bring our dinner. I had to ask. It had been 45 min since we finished apps. They apologized for forgetting but we chose to leave. They comped our apps and apologized . But, twice like that means we won't be back. They totally need to figure out how to handle both things. Ps. The mussels with coconut curry broth was VERY heavy on the peppers and had about three tablespoons of broth, making dipping bread pretty useless, imo. read more

January 2023 Attended the wine pairing dinner. The room, staff and wine rep were wonderful. The Italian wines were different and very good. The staff was very attentive. The music was a little loud but was lowered so we could hear the wine rep. The chef explained every course but the food was underwhelming. The charcuterie plate had some good offerings but there was a cheese that made me nauseous with a very foul flavor that lingered through dinner. We got scallops and steak. The service here is not good. The last time I tried to eat here they refused to seat my guest and me, without explanation, even though we were there during their posted brunch hour. The "host" was so rude I will probably not go back. My husband and I have been in this establishment a few times and enjoyed it. We live in South Berwick and enjoy supporting our local establishments. However tonight the Host treated us not so well. I guess because we were not dressed up , my husband just had his hip replaced a month ago so we were in casual clothing. We only wanted to sit and have a drink at the bar that CLEARLY had empty seating. The host hesitated for a minute and then asked if we had made reservations. I guess this time as a customer we weren't welcome, maybe we didn't look dressed up to his standards. Sad to be treated differently. We will never return. read more

Located in a period renovated old building turned Inn, in the little town of South Berwick, the quality of this restaurant was definitely a nice surprise. The atmosphere is very pleasing, with the option of outdoor porch seating a big plus. Dufour's menu has something for everyone and there wasn't anything on there that didn't sound wonderful. Fried green tomatoes as an appetizer? Yes please. An outstanding Halibut special blew me away, as did my dining partner's duck confit. Dishes come with sides but I also love the option of being able to order additional sides, especially when they include lovely seasonal veggies. Cocktail list was creative and fun, prompting me to order a blackberry gimlet- very yummy- also a nice wine and beer list. Dessert was Pot de Creme, so good. Service was very prompt and friendly. We went for Brunch on a Sunday with close friends. The atmosphere was great, food was outstanding. The believe it was the chef that actually greeted us at the door and showed us to our table. Everything from the Watermelon processco to our main brunch items were so delicious. We even shared the brussel sprouts appetizer which changes daily it was amazing never had Brussels like those before!! This is a hidden gem for sure. Can't wait to go back! read more
