I held my parents surprise 50th anniversary party here back in November. Jodi and her team were excellent. I found this venue on a whim, as I live in Boston but my parents live in Maine. My mother cried multiple times because it reminded her of her actual wedding. Everyone complimented the food and the pricing was exceptional! Plenty of parking and very flexible. It was a while ago but I had the worst experience here ever. What a disappointment! We went here for a family dinner and although the grounds were gorgeous, the rest of our experience was absolutely terrible. They were out of the veggie of the night and served us steamed celery instead. Yes, that's right, steamed celery. My baked shrimp casserole was burned and when I brought it to the waitress' attention she shrugged and said that was how it was served. I even kind of argued with her about it and she said nothing. The crust was so hard in spots that I couldn't even break it with my teeth. The mashed potatoes looked like a scoop you might see on a cafeteria tray and were virtually tasteless. Top it off with no offer of dessert and that was that. I will never, ever recommend this place to anyone. read more

I'm being quite honest- I always look up reviews on yelp.com before going to a restaurant or business. The reviews on yelp.com for Spring Hill weren't very good, but since the only genuine complaint was the the service was slow, I decided to take a chance. After recently moving to Maine, and hearing from my co workers how wonderful this place was, I decided to try out Spring Hill Lodge. I was very, very glad I did. When I called the day before to request a reservation for 2, the woman on the phone was extremely polite and "looked forward to seeing us." My boyfriend & I went to Spring Hill Lodge on a Thursday night for his birthday and we both dressed in nice attire. We had never been to Spring Hill before, and it was kind of a pleasant surprise to find that it was in the middle of the woods :) Very quaint. When we arrived to the restaurant we were both greeted by a friendly lady who seated us right away. To me, the ambiance was nice, quiet and cozy. After looking over the menu we ordered some wine, and Maine crab cakes for appetizers. For the entrees we ordered Panko chicken & Rack of lamb. I can not describe how delicious the crab cakes were. They were made from scratch (and after talking with the waitress, she confirmed EVERYTHING was made from scratch, in house) and were just a great balance of being moist but not too greasy. My entree was the Panko chicken (with pineapple & homemade sweet chili sauce) which I choose to have rice as a side. With your entree it comes with snap peas, a slice of fruit and mashed squash (delicious!!). The portions are generous as they gave me two chicken breasts! I ended up taking one home :) My boyfriend got the rack of lamb, cooked perfectly. The choice for his side were mashed potatoes that were fried in a ball. I can not express to you how amazingly delicious it was. All the food was incredible!!! Lastly, we couldn't leave the place without trying some dessert. The nice waitress knew all the dessert items off the top of her head (there were about 7, and they change daily). We immediately decided on the homemade cream puff! When it arrived it was in a huge bowl (like a mixing bowl size) and it was a HUGE cream puff with ice cream and homemade warm chocolate sauce. Just perfection. Absolutely incredible. In regards to the service; To me, the service wasn't slow at all, but the right pace for the restaurant. If you want to have extremely delicious food, it's going to take some time. Don't expect to be in and out of a place in 30 minutes. It's well worth the wait, I guarantee it. If you have a birthday or Anniversary coming up do yourself a favor and try Spring Hill. The service was extremely friendly and reasonably swift, with some of the nicest servers I've encountered, anywhere. My father and I started off with their cream of mushroom soup and it was delicious. Then we split the Vaughn Woods Mushroom Caps, which were amazingly good. I wouldn't have thought to use white mushrooms for this, but I'm definitely going to have to try to reproduce the effect the next time I'm in the kitchen with mushrooms. For our entrees, my parents had the Knight's Pond Haddock, which they seemed to really enjoy. I had the Chicken Macadamia, which was delicious! The crust on the chicken was just scrumptious, and the garlic mashed potatoes were good too. I had a chocolate torte for desert which was very good and fudgey, and I stole a bite of my dad's blueberry creme brule which was good too. Our only complaints are as follows: when making the reservations, my mom said that she was lactose intolerant and asked for some sort of desert to be made for her, but they had no knowledge of this when we were there last night. They WERE good about making her a plate of strawberries and giving her powdered sugar, but still, a promise was made and not kept. Also, when making the reservation, my mom apparently asked for a birthday candle to be put in my dessert, and that wasn't done either. Mind you, I was happier not being the center of attention, but still.... :P Those are, in the scheme of things, minor quibbles. This was one of the best meals that I've had, with friendly waitstaff, in a beautiful setting. I have to say we went with trepidation to Spring Hill Lodge, but were pleasantly surprised by the friendly service and the delicious dinner. We started with a nice bottle of red wine from Italy and a warmed brie appetizer, Both of our salads - with Caesar dressing and blue cheese dressing were fresh and satisfying. A nice addition was the small bread board with the warm anadama bread loaf. Our entries were also superb. I had the surf and turf - cooked to perfection with a bit of bernaise sauce. My partner had the veal special which he said was cooked to perfection as well. We finished with two delicious desserts. I highly recommend the Indian pudding. What a treat!. The chocolate cake was quite dense and could have been served half the portion. We brought it home to enjoy it at a later time. My partner and I were visiting the Maine coast and found a Restaurant.com coupon for Spring Hill Lodge. We decided to take a drive into the countryside and we're glad we did. Our experience was enjoyable thanks too to the attentiveness of the staff, the cosiness of the restaurant and the beautiful locale (prices were very reasonable as well). We've been going to this restaurant for holidays for a while now and each time it has been excellent. They put on an excellent buffet for a rather reasonable price. They typically have a couple of omelet stations, fresh Belgian waffles, a carving station, a fish dish, and some veggies. They have excellent deserts as well. They do a very good job of scheduling reservations so that the place isn't so crowded you can't travel to the buffet again or hear those at the table with you. The servers are very friendly and quick to refill water and take away dirty plates. The road to Spring Hill is a little misleading, but it leads you to a very nice area with a nice view of a lake and green fields. Spring Hill has the best deserts in the area! The rest of the food is very good also. I order the Chicken Macadamia which was cooked perfectly. The macadamia nut crusting was great, but I thought the flavors were a bit muted. My better half ordered the Sea Scallops which she really enjoyed. Service was very friendly. My wife and I along with her parents have eaten here a few times in the last year when we come here to visit them. This review is based only on dining here, as we've never been to any functions. The dress here is very casual, as we've seen some all dressed up and others in jeans and flannel, so it is definitely a come as you are type place. Their menu is somewhat small,but the variety of dishes should satisfy most diners wants. We've had their stuffed mushrooms both times there and last night, we added artichoke hearts too. These 2 appetizers,and their fresh warm rolls, are enough to spoil ones appetite,as they were quite filling. Our entrees were from all parts of their menu, macadamia chicken, Sirloin steak, sprimp,and fettucine alfredo. Their chicken( my wifes choice) is the best we've ever had,hands down. My sirloin steak was as close to perfect as I've had anywhere. My inlaws, both raved about their meals too. In conclusion I'd say this is more a dining experience than a dinner at a restaurant. The staff here is very attentive to your needs and yet are not overbearing or hovering around your table. They also take the time to engage in a nice conversation if invited to. Had my daughter's bridal shower here during COVID Spring 2021. Spring Hill did a wonderful job. The venue was clean and cozy. The food was a brunch and the servings were plentiful. The staff did a wonderful job serving and letting us decorate this hall as we wanted. It was beautiful with all the added personal touches. The atmosphere was comfy and cozy and the views are beautiful. Would definitely recommend this venue for any events you have coming up. read more

I attended a wedding here three years ago, the venue inside is really nice, the grounds are also nice. I believe their restaurant catered the wedding and while it was decent food, it wasn't the greatest and I would never go out of my way to go here for a dinner date. My Mother in Law had free reign for the Rehearsal Dinner and she picked Spring Hill. Located off the beaten path in South Berwick, Maine, it overlooks a beautiful valley, with scenic vistas and ponds. We tried their menu a few months back, and I wasn't impressed. My fiance and I both had the Schnitzel plates (one was weiner, the other was.... jaeger?), but it was MIL's choice, so I wasn't going to make her feel bad. Our meals were flat out gross. The meat was overcooked to a rubbery consistency, the potatoes were SALTY (and my husband LOVES salt, but they were too much), and the service was so slow. We were one of 2 tables that evening. I also agree, that this isn't "fine dining". It definitely has a relaxed country feel, with the decor, and mismatched table settings (from table to table). The Rehearsal Dinner was a complete 180*. The food was delicious, the staff was attentive. It was like a whole new restaurant! My MIL did all the communicating with the venue, so I believe everything went without a hitch. They allowed us to set up lawn games outside the function hall which was extremely appreciated. Their bar selection was great, and the staff was polite, and genuine. They were wonderful to interact with throughout the night. The food was delicious. We did a lobster bake, which unfortunately, wasn't really a lobster bake. It was lobsters or a choice of chicken/steak/other. It would have been nice if they provided an authentic Maine Lobster Bake experience, but their menu was still delicious. Clams weren't on the menu, but my father doesn't eat lobster, so Spring Hill made him a special meal. His only complaint was that, in an effort to serve the entire table at once, some food didn't arrive hot. Flavors were spot on (however the ravioli was rumored to be bland). We finally made it out to Spring HIll after countless recommendations, but unfortunately I can no longer trust the tastes of those people. It was described on the website as fine dining, but when we arrived it had more of casual/country atmosphere. At first we were the only couple there (it was during a mild snowstorm), but shortly afterwards another couple showed up, dressed in jeans and sneakers. We felt a bit foolish having dressed for fine dining. Our service was very nice. The waitress was very polite and answered all our questions about the menu. However, once the food started arriving, everything went downhill. We started off with the Brie wedge, which was described as being served warm. Not really the case at all. It was barely tepid, and served with ordinary crackers and a sliced strawberry. On the plus side, the accompanying chutney was delicious. For our entrees, we decided to dive in to the German side of the menu, assuming that it must be the specialty of the house, as it is not often that you find traditional German-style cooking in southern Maine. My wife had the Jaeger Schnitzel, and I had the Wiener Schnitzel. My dish was barely edible - the veal was tough and had no flavor. The Jaeger Schnitzel was served with a mushroom cream sauce, but that did nothing for the pork loin it was served on. Again, bland, tough and barely satisfying. The portion size was nice, but my wife opted to only eat half and call it a lost cause. Presentation was blase with garnish you'd expect at a pub. Having been one of two tables in the entire restaurant, we expected much better food. read more

Staff graciously served us well, the food was excellent and the atmosphere, needless to say, was quiet and beautiful with decorations inside and snow falling outside. Five stars for everything. My husband and I recently had our wedding at Spring Hill. It was a wonderful experience all around. They planned everything out with us to the last detail. They were all so friendly and cheerful and did everything they could to make our special day stress free! The food was amazing! Our guests had a great time and some of them even said they would come back to try the restaurant. I would highly recommend Spring Hill to anyone looking for an amazing wedding venue! The service was excruciatingly slow and bad. (though the restaurant was not filled). There were 3 of us and we all loved the food. No question we'd all return for the food. We did mention how long it was taking and were, rudely, told "well, it is fine dining." However, the drinks, the appetizers, the bread all took forever. When the check arrived, they mentioned something about a coupon but added nothing else about it (or how much it was) other than tip of 20% was included in the bill. We were left to feel that quality service wasn't a priority since it was predetermined what the gratuity for service would be (for a party of 3). More than annoying! read more

We went for dinner on a Friday night. The food was excellent, and very enjoyable. The service was very, very slow. The dining room was not that full, but they did have a wedding reception going on in the function room. There was only 2 of us in our party, and the entire meal (salads, entrees, wine) took an hour and 45 minutes. Our plates were never cleared, and they only had 1 waitress and the hostess on. We have dined at Spring Hill many times. The dining room is quaint with assorted colorful table cloths and a beautiful view. Dining here allows for quiet conversations, unlike many other dining establishments. The staff is extremely friendly offering excellent service. Last night was no exception. Our meal was delicious, from the salad special with wonderful homemade dressing, to our entrees perfectly prepared and fresh vegetables, many from their own garden. The desserts are amazing, serving two or more with one of their large portions. Their prices are reasonable, considering the serving size and quality. They offer many weekly specials. My grandparents recently ate here and absolutely raved about it, so finally I decided we should all go! It is best to call early with a reservation, but I managed to snag on for 7 on Friday night after calling at 5, so they're flexible. It is definitely out of the way in South Berwick, but the views of the lake or pond it sits on as well as the forest are just gorgeous, and very relaxing. In fact, I found the overall ambiance of the restaurant very relaxing. We started off with water and I got a Blueberry Lemonade, which was Stoli Blueberry, Lemonade, and club soda. It was advertised with fresh blueberries, but I didn't find it lacking without them! It was very tasty. The starter salads we got were only 3 dollars a plate and were great portions! The salad dressings were made in house (as is everything else) and were very delicious. I love caesar salad but find that when it is too salty or too overdressed it's not as good. The bread was tasty as well, but did not seem to be fresh, rather defrosted, and not completely so. My grandfather got the Dunnybrook Haddock, which was very slightly dry, but delicious! My grandmother got the Chicken Macadamia which was phenomenal, so tender and flavorful. I got the ravioli with marein cream sauce, and though I wish it had come with a bit more sauce, I was pleasantly surprised to see vegetables on my plate, which never happens with pasta dishes! A lovely balance, and a delicious meal. We could't resist trying the Mud Slide Ice Cream pie, which was very light (surprising, huh?), and the sauces were incredible. Our waitress and host were very pleasant and very knowledgeable about the restaurant, drinks, and food, and were able to answer all of our questions, and knew the details of the desserts off the top of their head. July 28, 2012 - Went here for dinner a 5:00pm. Food was good. Waitress some were excellent I thought the place had a beautiful view. I enjoyed my meal so did everyone else... until the end of the meal and after paying the bill the following happen. which is too bad because I thought it was a nice place. Shocker was when they took our bill never did ask did we need change or thank you ( we gave them a 22% tip..) a few minutes later. The first waitress who waiting on us or not sure if she was the owner. came over and said " I hate to do this but you have to leave " mentioned something earlier about needing the table.. Never told us this when we made the reservations... We were in such shock that a restaurant would ever do this. Can 't believe how rude that was , the other shocker was there were also four empy tables in the restaurant and no one waiting I will never return to this restaurant.. Any of the other fine dinning places such as Johnathan's or Clayhill Farms.in Maine .. would never treat paying customers like that my friend suggested this restaurant and couldn't say enough how she enjoyed this place the last time she was there... and how they took there time... and paced you. We looked at this venue and must say at first glace its beautiful. My daughter was excited to find it and was eager to book the date. We paid our deposit almost a year in advance for the October 1st event. We moved on to others things. My daughter and her mother called in February to set up a second look. The day they went the lady seemed rushed and side tracked, that's when things went sour. They were told that even though in previous conversations there where a few decoration there we could use that was not true. We were unable to use our credit card to make payments other than the initial deposit. The girls asked about table cloths that looked wrinkly if they iron them, she said if you want them ironed you can do it yourself. They asked about using wine glasses for water instead of the ones they normally use and got an attitude. They asked about booking extra time if the reception was running late. They were told that it is $200.00 for an hour, must be prepaid and if not used is not refundable if you don't use it. The venue is not easy to find so they asked if they could put a sign out by road and were told no. There is no help with set-up or teardown. She even said a couple times and I quote "This is not a $40,000.00 venue; you get what you pay for". Needless to say they left there that day without a good feeling anymore. I spoke with them and we decided something didn't feel right and decided to cancel and look at other venues. We still had 8 months. I spoke with the owner Rosalie Scharf and explained all this to her. As I went on about the issues our conversation did not go well. She explained the deposit is not refundable, even though it was 8 months in advance. I explained that I felt given the amount of time it was unfair. In our heated conversation I remember her saying that if she could re-rent the date she would offer the refund. I waited 6 months, found out the date was rebooked and contacted her. Ironically she didn't remember that and said she was heading out but would look and her notes and call me tomorrow. Well I never got a call back and a few days later I called her again. She never took my calls. I spoke with people that took my calls and was told, they'd give her the message. I even left a private message on a social media site. I received a letter from her a week later, with a copy of our contract, stating that there would be no refund because we signed a contract. Ok I get that but isn't a verbal conversation a contract as well. Bottom line is now there making an extra $1000.00 on that date. My advice to all brides is to be very thorough in your questions before you sign their contract. We should have known when the original packet showed up "postage due" and we had to pay for it. . We were pleasantly surprised with our overall experience. It is a casual country experience, but we dressed-up a bit and didn't feel out of place. Unfortunately we didn't have a reservation so we got the table for two closest to the door away from all the windows. Our servers were very pleasant and eager to please. The service was a bit slow so if you are on a timeline this may not be the best place for you. The food was all very good. We were surprised to see a lamb dish for only $22 and the New York strip for $21 was very good and a good size. Overall we had a very nice evening and would recommend the place. read more

My husband and I chose Spring Hill after hearing great reviews about them. They were one of the more affordable venues in the area, and pre-wedding they were helpful so we weren't worried about having any problems with them. The day of the wedding, the coordinator (Joy) was not there. This wouldn't have been a problem if there had been someone there to direct questions to, but there wasn't. Decorations that had been promised to be put out were not, plans that we had gone over with Joy were not executed. A lot of the tasks that were supposed to be carried out by the staff were pushed off on to my guests, which made me feel very tacky. The venue is very nice and the food was good, but as far as service they didn't follow through on anything we had gone over, which I was led to believe is their basic protocol for weddings at their facility. If I had been prepared to do more work myself then I probably would have given them a better rating, but I was told the staff would be taking care of these things so I planned accordingly. When I brought my concerns to their attention via email, they ignored most of what I had to say and didn't even offer an apology. My last email was sent about a week ago and I have received no response and honestly don't expect to. So much thought goes in to planning a wedding and to have so much of that fall through was really disappointing. I expected that people in the business of throwing weddings would be understanding about that. I know some people have had a great experience here, but I wouldn't recommend it based off my own experience. read more

We went here last night and when we walked in the two piece band was playing and it sounded really nice and the view was awesome however when we ordered it all went downhill , we both ordered the duck and when it was served it was basically a prepared meal by Sisco no chef at this place! The duck was so tough we couldn't eat it and I told the server about the crunchy overcooked rice and nothing was done. The only good thing was the bread which was made here and the two piece band. If I could have given it a 3.5, I would have. But since I have to choose one way or the other, I'm going with a 4. The view is spectacular, the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, the ambiance is relaxed and pretty, and the live jazz (it was Sunday) was light and nice and not overbearing. They do have some vegetarian appetizers and entrees which is refreshing and a big reason why we picked this place. The artichoke and brie appetizers were amazing and their bread (homemade?) was super fresh and soft. The appetizers were very reasonably priced. Although the vegetarian entrees were delicious, I do find that they were priced a bit higher than what I would expect. They charge a lot for mixed drinks, which is to be expected, but unfortunately they are very weak. There are placed I would rather go if I'm going to spend that kind of money, but overall I am happy with our experience at Spring Hill Lodge. read more
