First time back to Duffins in many years. I remember their torta subs being delicious, but can't eat that anymore so we ordered Pupusas.... word to the wise, don't order Pupusas! They are a mess. Too much dough, not enough cheese, served with nasty mayo coleslaw and gross tomato sauce that aren't right. I've been driving by this location for many years yet haven't go in until recently after reading the reviews on Yelp. It really surprised my wife and I that their donuts taste much better than Tim Horton's. (Well, of course I know T.H. is not the best but it's so popular.) One of my favorites is the Boston Creme, which it's a little too sweet to me in many places. But Duffin's one is just right up to my taste. Beside Boston Creme, we tried a few others with creme fillings, which we like all of them pretty much. We also tried the steak sub. Despite there's only a little meat, it has avocado, tomato and lettuce, which tastes pretty good. We might want to try some other stuff later. read more

Great place to eat - haven't actually tried the donuts as I go for the Mexican tortas (sandwich). Haven't found another place that has these sandwiches and having a great variety as well. So I went to East is East and spent $30 for some delicious microscopic portions. It tasted great but left me wanting. Decided to hit up Duffins after for a double cheese burger, and BOOM! That $5 treated me just right. Whatever your mood, you can be guaranteed to be looked after at Duffins, and the crowd of unique individuals will have you coming back for more. The best establishment in east van IMO. If you're an entitled fancy boy please steer clear. We don't want your filth here. Also as a side note. 24HR HEAVEN. I had the mixed Pupuas this time , they come with a sweetish tomato salsa and some sliced cabbage . Theyre yummy! Im not crazy about the sauce on its own but with the Pupuas. and cabbage it works. I went around lunch time on a week day and the tables were clean so I ate there. Im still not convinced that these tables are cleaned often enough so I am sticking with my 4 stars. This place is 100% affordable and the only thing I've had there is the torta subs and I have not looked back since! It's absolutely heavenly. This is the kind of place where you pay at the counter and don't expect any service, cause you ain't going to get any. Why would you need service though? This is like complaining about the service at McDonald's. What are you going to do? Stop eating Big Macs? Quit them Chicken sandwiches cold turkey? That was confusing. But you get my point. Can you say Fried chicken that tastes pretty much like Church's, and better than kfc for realz. At 2 in the morning. No questions asked. Because they are bloody 24 hours. I find the coffee service really slow but their coffee usually isn't worth it, because that is totally something I am a snob about, but what I'm not, is doughnuts. Their jelly filled/topped buttermilk donuts are frigging amazing, the berry and the custard, not as big a fan of the lemon. So if you are tempted to try one when you walk in, do so. Completely worth it. Although, last time a friend of mine ordered fries there I tried one and it tasted... fishy. Literally. So not sure if that's a common problem, or if they're supposed to, I might suggest you pass on them. Who needs the extra calories of fries after fried chicken anyways? read more

Excellent Vietnamese sub sandwiches! My personal favorite is the grilled chicken, the meat trio is also pretty good. The donuts are usually pretty good, I've had more hits than misses. Coffee was pretty bad, but no worse than Starbucks or McDonald's. If you drink your coffee with milk and sugar you won't notice the difference, trust me. The Chinese fast food is pretty good surprisingly, but my astronomically low expectations at midnight may have helped the cause. It's usually pretty dirty in the middle of the night, but it's not like you have many options in the area besides pho. Service is curt and apathetic at best. read more

My favourite donut place in the city. Not pretentious at all, cheap, and always tasty. Even their day-olds (10 for $3!!) are great (just not the cruellers). Haven't had any savoury food from here, but most people say it's also good for the price. Totally underrated place. read more

Best fried chicken in the city! Service is a little lacking but the chicken specifically is amazing

I stop here on occasion for a fast bite during the lunch hour. My favourite is the ham and cheese sandwich with a diet coke (all for about $5!). The best part is the banana peppers and avocado snippet that oozes from that warm fresh baked bun after you bite into it. If you like a good ham and cheese sandwich and haven't tried it here - you are missing a good thing! BTW - some of the best meals are created at "greasy spoons" or "stale coffee shops" - this place reminds me of Bob's Subs in Richmond. If you're a Vancouverite, you have to try Duffin's at least once. I recommend it. They have a huge variety - from fruits to fast food to bubble tea - so there will be something suited for you. My first trip there was at 1am on a Saturday, and even then it was quite packed (there was a lineup). There were empty tables and at least two open parking spots available, so don't worry about it getting too full. The environment feels a bit cheap, but I think it resembles a vintage-ish fast food restaurant look (red/black and white tiles, the tables...). Either way, it was clean enough. I had a long john and a sugar raised donut. The first thought was that I'll never taste Tim's the same way ever again. The donuts were soft and fresh (even at 1am in the morning!) and that tells you something. It was inexpensive as well, so I should have ordered more. Will definitely be going there again! read more

I have a special place in my heart for Duffins. Maybe it's that good feeling knowing there's a place nearby that's always open, always serving yummy sandwiches , drinks, donuts, fried chicken , papusas, or even a fresh coconut. This place has character; gruff service and a kind of weird diner-meets-Chinese restaurant vibe (although they did stop serving the Chinese food). TVs are usually playing sports or some US news station. But their torta subs are so good. I've pretty much tried all of them and favorites include the Machaca and viet chicken. I'm giving two stars because I love their donuts and fried chicken, and that they are open 24 hours. Been coming here for years with no issues until I got violently ill after eating their pupusas.... The place is old, run down and dirty - I guess that's part of the charm for some - but after getting sick from their food it really made me wonder how filthy their kitchen is. If I do go back I think I'll stick to the donuts. UPDATE: I made a report to Vancouver Coastal health and they did an inspection. For what this place is trying to do, this place does it well. Specifically, cheap food and lots of variety. The menu spectrum is akin to a small food court in one restaurant. Vietnamese sub's, Mexican tortas sub's, pupusas, fries, bubble tea, tamales and even fried chicken. And yes, even donuts! Sandwiches are good and just what you would assume. The chicken sandwich had mayo, tomato, lettuce, and meat. No surprises and didn't try to be fancy. Tamales were hot, decent and available at the front counter. My take on this place is mixed. My review is solely based on their donuts (Duffin's donuts). I love their donuts - they are fresh, soft, and diverse - definitely better than Timmy's. I tried their fried chicken and although I preferred their spicy version, I can't say I liked it better than Church's spicy chicken. It had good flavor and less oily but it just wasn't crispy enough. Yum!!! It's not just a doughnut house, and not just a cafe!! Duffins donuts have old-style cake doughnuts that Tim Hortons doesn't feature. The rest of the doughnuts - Long Johns, jelly filled, etc are very light and extremely tasty!! And then there are the pupusas! It's lovely to enjoy these savoury delights and then a sweet doughnut. Duffins also has sandwiches and subs, but I can't bring myself to try one as I enjoy the Pupusas so much. The atmosphere isn't high class by any stretch. But it's a 24 hour location, and I don't mind the trip from Surrey to 41st and Knight. It's well worth the trip! read more

Ordered 10 piece chicken over the phone. Drove all the way there to pick it up and staff entered the amount charging me more without telling me. Thank goodness I checked the amount before tapping my debit card and questioned about the extra charges. The worker explained they ran out of wings and replaced with breasts without telling or giving me a choice if I wanted the substitution when I called in to order. I told him I was very confused with this. He then talked down to me questioning me what and why was the extra charges so confusing. I told him that they can't just charge customers extra for the substitution in this case especially without first asking or giving customers a choice. He turned away asking other workers including the regular worker Lily to deal with me. They were extremely adamant arguing that they have to charge me extra as breasts cost more than wings even though I didn't asked for the substitution or they can simply just give me fewer pieces of chicken or wait until the wings came out. Again we told them we totally understood that breasts cost more than wings but that was not the problem with paying more. The problem lies with charging customers for "surprise" substitution without consent. If they're out of wings in this case, they shouldn't charge customers extra for the substitution on their end. The substitution should be given to the customer at no additional cost. Sadly they refused to listen to reasoning. So we left and will never recommend or return with friends and families. read more

Come here for the fried chicken. It is one of the few good fried chicken places in the city. The place is not exactly nice, so you're better ordering take out, but the food is good and the prices are super low. The pupusas are good, the tamales are fine, the burgers are supercheap and the fries are perfectly unpretentious. So go, order out, and enjoy. read more
