While I'm sure the actual donuts are baked/fried in advance, the addition of warm - fresh topping & icing is a game changer. I opted for maple bacon (don't knock it until you try it). The sweet and salty contrast is divine. However I like crispy bacon - the bacon was a tad undercooked for my liking. Service was professional and polite if not a bit distant. So I have been here previously and had a great experience and thought I'd try it again this time it was horrible. The donut tasted overcooked and doesn't look anything like I ordered. First time ordering the Duck Dozen through DoorDash. These were probably some of the best donuts I've ever had. The variety was great! The only reason I gave a 4 instead of 5 was because I got 11 donuts instead of 12. Pricey so the full dozen would have been nice. The box was sealed so sure the DoorDash driver didn't eat one. This place is magic. You order at the counter and then ..they make the donuts. You have to admire the simplicity of this model. Unlike chain donut or coffee shops Duck Donuts is making all their yumminess on site moments after you place the order. Once you order, you get a ticket and are directed towards the back to wait for your order. You can literally watch them drizzle sugary goodness on fresh,hot baked goods....is there anything better? We took our donuts to go but there is a table and some high top seats by the window if you want to eat inside. We went on a Wednesday around noonish and it was empty. The donuts are soft and melt in your mouth. Think clouds with just the right amount of sticky sweetness. Depending on the toppings, things could get messy (cookie crumble was crumbling) but that's to be expected. If you can manage not to eat the warm moist heaven that is these donuts before you drive home, you will have the added bonus of your car smelling like a slice of heaven covered in sugary glaze. Amazing donuts!!! We ordered via DoorDash, and the donuts were ready by the time we arrived at the storefront so everything was super easy. I would note that these are all cake donuts, so if you're looking for yeast donuts you should go elsewhere. However, while I'm usually not a big fan of cake donuts (I prefer yeast), I still happily scarfed down these donuts as they were delicious. I am so sad that I had Duck Donuts only once my entire trip to Raleigh. I need more of it in my life, which I guess gives me more reason to come out to NC... but a franchise out in SJC would be nice! What I liked about Duck Donuts was that the donuts were made-to-order. You can see the donuts being fried on the spot, so I knew that I was getting donuts freshly made as opposed to sitting out behind a glass case for who knows how long. They came out piping hot, and I could feel the warmth through the box. I'm also not a huge fan of cake donuts, but I really loved the texture. The cake batter was soft like brioche. The donuts then go through an assembly line by which the toppings are added. I'm told that you can customize the donuts in any way you want, but I stuck to a couple of items off the menu. I ordered the maple bacon and blueberry/lemon glaze, which were both fantastic. The maple bacon donut did not skimp on the bacon, and the bacon was made well--neither too crispy nor undercooked. It's SO worth it to go here in the morning! My boyfriend and I came here Saturday morning intentionally so we could get fresh donuts. They're open pretty late (for a donut shop) so you could always go in the afternoon, but in the morning they're cranking out fresh donuts since it's busier. There were 3-4 parties ahead of us waiting for their donuts too, but the staff here is just fast. The donuts: we got a half dozen to split, including 2 Maple Bacon (maple frosting with bacon topping), French toast (maple frosting with powdered sugar and cinnamon), pumpkin roll (seasonal), cinnamon roll (cinnamon sugar with icing drizzle), and cookies and cream (Oreos on top). We didn't eat them all but the Maple Bacon, French toast, and cinnamon roll were all delicious. They were warm and soft too. If you eat meat, you must get the maple bacon! I also got an iced coffee, which was solid for a donut place. The server didn't offer cream or sugar, but they don't have any condiment bar items out right now because of the pandemic. 2.5. I cannot read so my displeasure with this is my own fault. All the "base" donuts are the same. It is basically a funnel cake batter made thicker and fluffier in a round shape. The "variety" comes from the toppings you can order. We got talked into 6 as it was "cheaper" but should have stuck with 1-3. The ones we got were: maple bacon-which my husband said was good. The maple wasn't overly sweet( I sampled and agreed) and a decent amount of bacon blueberry something-this was my husband's choice and I did not sample cinnamon sugar for the kidlet. She had one bite but my husband pronounced it really good. I got apple pie. Which was a huge mess. It has the "apple" filling in the hole of the donut and came with huge crumbles that got all over the place. The crumbles had no flavor. pumpkin spice something-this was ok. salted caramel-this was inedible. The frosting was so sickeningly sweet and it was so thick that it was all you could taste. I could not get any kind of caramel flavor out of this. Overall this is not the donut experience I was looking for and it is my own fault for not reading/understanding the concept. The other annoying part is there is little to no seating inside. There were 2 tables and they were taken up by a lot of adults and kids. They had outdoor seating with umbrellas but there was not a lot of shade and it was hot and humid. Have I had better, oh yes - but this is not Paula's Donuts in Buffalo, NY, so the bias ends with the lack of availability of a local gourmet donut shop, unless there is one I'm not aware of. Duck donuts has a huge following. The first store I went to was in Cary. I just happen to see that Duck donuts was up the street from Rex Hospital. I was excited. First off, it was difficult to find. Store was on the corner with little signage. I think I visited the store the first week it opened so signage may have changed but they do need huge signage so people will see it. Now on to the donuts....i got glaze, my daughter got vanilla icing with sprinkles. They have an overwhelmingly amount of donut flavors and being that I was one of the 4 people in the store...I just hurried and got glaze. I went simple and orders the PB covered with chocolate drizzle and I got my gf the chocolate covered with white chocolate drizzle. The donuts are made to order, and are given to you warm with the topping still melting. Although I am by no means a donut connoisseur... I haven't been to a place that makes donuts fresh to order. I've only frequented places that you see a donut in the window or in a basket and you pick it (maybe I should get out more...?)... so to me this was pretty novel!
