The peeps behind the counter are surly and impatient (and that's in the off-season), but I've been in their touristville working shoes and I'm willing to overlook it for one of my sweet, sweet maple-glazed lovers. Last year I made the mistake of scoffing at my companions who ordered the maple. (I don't really like maple.) I learned my lesson right quick. With the maple frosting these are like deep fried pancakes. Just trust me, and do it. Or three. Best eaten hot, overlooking the water at the end of the walkway. We stopped at Duck Donuts on Saturday on our way out of town. We had attempted to visit them on Tuesday, but I guess they were still keeping off-season hours, because they were closed. (And we were dumb and overlooked their hours when we checked the Web site.) Unfortunately, due to my boyfriend's dairy allergy, he couldn't try the donuts, but since they fry their donuts in soybean oil (we called and checked), I could--and did! I'm usually not a big fan of warm donuts, but oh-so-tasty! I got two glazed donuts. They were made on the spot. Very sticky and warm! :) I wish I could try some of the other flavors, but with my allergies, I shouldn't tempt fate. As it stands, I am glad I finally got the chance to try them. Update: after posting my review at 2 stars, with my problems, the owner of the store reached out to me and has been very kind, apologetic and attentive the matter. Sometimes 1 person can ruin your experience, if it really doesn't reflect on the establishment IF they care about customer feedback and address situations. The Other employees we encountered were amazing. Because of all of this, I am changing my stars from 2 to 4 We have a Duck Donuts in my town, but when visiting the Outer Banks, we wanted to visit the original. When we walked up to order, we were met with the most rude person I encountered my entire trip to OBX. She was rolling her eyes, and didn't even speak up expect to tell me how much she owed. I went to get my donuts and later a friend went through the line and said to me later, "the cashier sure was rude." Not a good first impression when you go to the flagship location! Surprisingly, I think the donuts tasted better at my location at home, maybe it was because the service made me not want donuts anymore. read more

I was a little disappointed in the selection of toppings and donuts after seeing advertisements that said "made to order". They had roughly eight different glazes including chocolate, powder, and lemon as well as 10 dry toppings like sprinkles and peanuts. Even with the limited toppings the donuts were very good. The donuts here are fantastic. Served warm and to order. My personal favorite is the cinnamon sugar. Sometimes you just can't go wrong with simple. I would rate this five stars on taste, but have to consider the staff too. I have been here several times over the past couple of years and have encountered some of the rudest and unfriendly staff. Decent cake donuts with lots of flavor options - but not the unbelievable experience the long lines would lead you to think. I've been coming to Duck for 32 years and have seen places come and go. I'm glad Duck has a homegrown donut place that's so popular, and that departs from the typical Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts mold. I've never had a bad experience there, but the donuts are average and the service uninspired. All of the donuts are the same cake donut base, with added flavored frostings and toppings. I like the orange and maple, but they are all very sweet. The donuts are best hot, which is how you receive them. They are less good once they cool. Parking and the wait are not so hot. The popularity of Duck Donuts makes it trying to go there. They're open all day, so sometimes it's better to go for an afternoon snack instead of breakfast, when the line is shorter. read more

We wanted to come to the original duck donuts while visiting me Outer Banks. There was a long line and as we are close to the front, their credit card machine broke down. The lead worker lent us cash so that we can place our order while my husband went to the ATM. We have a large family and I was trying to make sure I have enough cash for everything. The girl at the counter gave me a discount because I was two dollars short. Then one of my kids had asked for their chocolate milk and I explained I didn't have enough cash and we would need to wait until daddy got back from the ATM. The same lead, overheard this and gave my daughter a chocolate Milk. These employees went above and beyond to keep everyone happy! We were sure to leave them a large tip as a thank you! read more

I stopped in on a Wednesday morning so I didn't have to deal with crowds of any kind. We stopped by this morning with two hungry grandchildren and four adults headed on a long road trip home. We were looking for coffee and donuts!! The coffee was fresh and very hot! Confession: I'm not really a "donut person." I don't have much of a sweet tooth, but admitting this when you live near the birthplace of Krispy Kreme is sacrilegious to some. But, you can't go to Duck without a visit to Duck Donuts, and if I'm going to indulge in a donut, these are my favorites. Maybe it's because they don't seem as sweet as some other donuts (although with the variety of glazes and toppings, they can be as sweet as you want them to be). I also don't think they're quite as big as a Krispy Kreme or Dunkin, so I can usually finish one before I hit my sugar limit (don't throw stones; I can eat my weight in things like cheese). As far as consistency, I think they're a bit heavier than a Krispy Kreme but not cake-like in the Dunkin fashion. I like the original glaze or cinnamon sugar, but have tried bite of chocolate glaze with sprinkles and maple glaze with peanuts, and they are delicious. They even have bacon as a topping, although I've yet to try it (I should, though, given my preference for the savory). They're made to order and best enjoyed right away, but they do heat up in the microwave well. Also, I love their coffee - usually get mine iced. I think they use a special "Kill Devil Hills" blend. They've changed their setup if you haven't been recently. You order on knee side of the little shopping "village" and walk across with a number to the pick up location (the original location for everything). Best donuts ever! I recommend getting the bacon one while it might sound gross, it is absolutely delicious. Other good flavors are: Blueberry, Cookies and Cream, and you can create your own for any picky eaters! The line might be long and it is very busy so make sure to get up early (6ish) They have great service and everyone there is very nice. You can even watch them make the donuts! the donuts tasted above-average but the service was subpar. most of the people there were just jacking around the whole entire time. For example there were two girls that were sitting in the delivery room sitting on their phones laughing around while one guy was doing all of the work. We made a big mistake by ordering three Waters and they didn't tell us that they were going to be water bottles and not water cups. The donuts smacked though. read more
