Great treat while visiting OBX! We arrived just before 7:00 and stood in line for a total of 45 minutes before leaving with our order. The atmosphere is friendly and the line moves pretty quick. The store is a little small for the volume of business done at this location. The system involving order forms and teamwork compensate nicely. One star for two reasons: 1) The HUGE lack of professionalism on the part of one member of their staff (who hopefully, was just having a bad day or hadn't had their duck donuts coffee). On the morning of Aug. 6th, a middle-aged, well-built blonde woman was working the register. I had already tried, and failed, at tackling the order form, which is made for people who want one glaze and one topping (details on that below). My boyfriend and I were relaying the orders of 5 family members, including ourselves, none of which were familiar with Duck Donuts and had picked multiple glazes/toppings out of sheer excitement. I explain what we wanted to the woman, who gives me a strange look and tells me that they "noorrrmallyyy only do one topping and one glaze." Well, that caveat is lacking from um, anywhere on your menu. Or overall establishment. Anywhere. So I ask, "Well, can do you do it? If not, it's not a problem and I can re-sort out the orders." She hesitantly says yes, obviously already frustrated with me. Because I mean, adding a drizzle and a few sprinkles is really #struggecity. But whatever, I don't make the donuts here, I don't run the show, I'm not the expert. So I start telling her the orders, and she starts putting the orders on the jig-saw puzzle of death that is their order form, meant for 1 glaze and 1 topping orders. As soon as she whips this out I already know this is going to hell. I tell her my order, which is maple w/bacon glaze (one glaze option), with peanut butter glaze (another glaze option she said she could "zebra" on there), with bacon on top. I know, GA-ROSS, but, sometimes you just have to do you. Then, hand to god, she gives me a look like I have forty-five heads and just ate a live dolphin in the middle of the store. "What??!! Uh....that's..bacon...and bacon." "Yes. Maple w/ bacon glaze. AND bacon topping. PB glaze on that as well if you can do it", I say with a smile. "So...that's double bacon". Yes did I stutter. Actually, I said, (again, cheerfully), "....Yes....is that alright or...?" Her: "Uh...okay....that's just...sooo.........odd....*shakes head*" Hold the F*CK up. Am I giving you my money? Yes? No? Yes? Okay, then what my taste buds want is absolutely none of your business and it is obnoxiously rude and impolite to comment on a customer's taste. You said you could do multi-glaze multi-topping, accommodate me. If you can't/it's against policy, TELL ME. I'm not a difficult customer and have the demeanor of Anne Hathaway when I'm at food establishments, so the attitude was not warranted, regardless of her frustration. Guess what? I was frustrated too buying donuts for 5 people at the crack a$$ of dawn. Then she gives me my total: 7 donuts. For the 5 orders I relayed to her. I let one slide because the number one coincided nicely with how many f*cks I did NOT give at that juncture. Not one f*ck was given at Duck Donuts that morning. All in all, only one of them came out right from the kitchen. One. And guess what one that was? .....THE ONE WITH ONE GLAZE. ONE TOPPING. Which brings me to #2: 2) Your order form matrix is about as easy to comprehend as the actual matrix. Recommend putting in giant letters you make one glaze, one topping donuts. Don't put that you will accommodate other orders because that is apparently a farce. You may put that you hire cranky, judgmental people with very limited patience. Or, you could reprimand said person AND put that statement in if you wanted it to be my wet dream. I realize I sound like a whiney diva with a complicated relationship with food (see Mariah Carey), but I assure you the rage is coming from having to deal with this while keeping a smile on my face, while my boyfriend stared at donuts frying (god love him). That said, the donuts were effing tasty. All 6 (er, I guess technically only 5) incorrect orders of them. Drive to the one in Duck; might have better service. read more

The donuts are ok. The lady at the register was extremely rude. Having a popular product does does not entitle you to be rude to your customers. After asking why I was not charged the half dozen price, she rudely told me I did not tell her beforehand that I was getting a half dozen. The difference is 50 cents, so I was just asking, not because I cared about 50 cents. She said "I can change it if you want" rudely looking at the customers behind me. While I was ordering she also said "I don't know how many you have left because you did not tell me how many you wanted". There are better ways to answer these questions than in such an unfriendly manner. read more

I don't know what it is about this location but it's NOT the same as the others. Two years in a row I tried this one & The staff always seems like you're bothering them. The donuts are not as good as other locations either. Management here must not be training well or hiring good employees. Great cake donuts. Many toppings to choose from. I'm a little impartial to raised donuts though like from Krispy Kreme. But for cake donuts these were really good and not dense as I would have expected from a cake donut. Coffee was excellent. Yummy doughnuts! Freshly made. Light and not heavy or greasy. Would recommend trying a mixed box of doughnuts to try all the flavors.
