First off it's a beautiful place, noise level is low and easy on the ears, the services is beyond excellent. The food is nothing but Excellent the freshest fish and dishes. Deserts are perfection. This is a Diamond.

    Cornish hen is very nice

2026 May 1: 1) snow pea soup 2) marinated anchovies 3) ribeye with grilled vegetables, medium rare 4) lamb chops medium 5) Cornish hen 6) grilled char. Snow pea soup is ok. Ribeye is pretty good. Anchovies are larger and not as good as the ones we had in Turkey. All the entrees are great.

The food is decent but the service wasn't great. To start, there was no soap in the bathroom. I got the ribeye which was really tough and not soft like butter. It wasn't easy to cut through the meat. The drinks are pretty good. The tap water doesn't taste right and was very metallic tasting (especially when warm). The staff isn't very attentive. Amazing service, but we went a weekday evening for restaurant week. Everything tasted delicious. We shared our food a tried each others, what an amazing vibe. I can't wait to come back to the terrace in the summer.

Grabbed lunch here with my family. Wasn't busy yet, but they had to make a lighting (flashing in my face) adjustment for table they put us at. Been a while since I've been back, but enjoyed everything ordered (octopus salad, grilled calamari, cuttlefish risotto, pork chops, veal ragout and cornish hen). Tried the Tomic red wine, which was ok. Enjoyed our meal, which is expected considering the cost of the entrees ranging from $19 to $32. Location is probably the biggest issue here since they are on a very busy stret. While they have valet parking, not inclined to stop there. They do have a parking lot across the street (look for the sign).

I had such a wonderful time here and will definitely be coming back to try more of their food! It was my first time having Croatian food and I really enjoyed all the flavors. The servers were also very kind and accommodating which made my date night here even better. I was a bit cold sitting by the door and they immediately allowed me to move to another table away from the wind. I've been eyeing this restaurant for a while and then I saw that they were participating in the Hudson Valley Restaurant Week. For their dinner menu, it was 3 courses for just $45 but my partner and I wanted to try more items from their menu. They gave us bread with a chickpea spread and their own homemade olive oil which was delicious. We started with their oysters and grilled vegetables to start, which were delicious. I loved how the puréed eggplant tasted and my favorite was probably the grilled pepper. I went with the Skradin Veal Risotto and it was delicious. I kept wanting to eat more of it. They have another type of risotto that I'm definitely going to try on my next visit. Then I had the Pasta "Morski Plodovi" which had clams, shrimp and cavatelli. The sauce was addicting and the bits of shrimp in there really brightened up the whole dish. I'm a big fan of seafood and this place absolutely nailed it in my opinion. For dessert, I chose the Kremšnita which was a puff pastry with vanilla custard. I loved the flakiness of the puff and it was just the perfect end to the meal. My only regret is eating more food before my meal because I had gotten really full here but next time I'll be coming with an empty stomach ready to eat through the menu!

Came here with some high expectations for the first time. We were warmly welcomed and sat at a nice table downstairs. Service was unobtrusive and the food came fast. Room had ok ambiance e with wine wall but loud slide to lower ceilings. Nice art on walls We were served bread with olive oil and a dip I think of garbanzo beans. Ok olive oil The beets and grilled calamari were the appetizer. Beets were delicious with a nice acidity and sprinkled with goat cheese. Delicious. Calamari was accompanied with coleslaw and it worked well! Nice acidity and olive and garlic. Calamari was great although the middle was a little undercooked. Nice large portion. The lobster special was a lobster tail cooked broiled and presented very nicely. It was a little rubbery but it was tasty. The other entree was problematic. I felt like a pork chop and expected a grilled pork chop with nice Brussels sprouts and potatoes. The Brussels sprouts were mushy and lacked flavor. Potatoes were ok. Pork chop was unacceptable - overcooked and doused is a gravy of some sort (I had to put a piece of bread to absorb this mess so I could try eat the pork chop). Unfortunately the pork chop was inedible. It was impossible to cut with a steak knife so I gave up - see pic. Waiter asked how it was as my plate was barely touched. I said no and he asked the manager to come over. He did and of course comped the pork chop and offered a new dish of my choice. By then I was not in the mood for further experimentation and despite his efforts and good nature I just could not accept. Overall this was a poor experience and the food disappointing. People were super nice and I understand that I may have ordered the 'wrong thing'. But if it's on the menu either do it right or take it off the menu Will I return? Maybe for redemption but certainly disappointed.

My partner and I came here for an early dinner on a weekday night, and we were some of the only people in the restaurant. We got great service from our waiter. The presentation of the fish is memorable, and it did make us go for seafood. If you request the fish to be filleted, they'll do it for you right at the table! The cocktail menu was surprisingly robust. The carrot cake was a little disappointing. I'd skip it, especially with as large of a dessert menu as there was.

Disappointed by the experience -- not what we've come to expect from The Modern…read more The four of us have been to The Modern many times and usually enjoy sitting at the bar for a more relaxed experience. Last night, however, was deeply disappointing. From the start, there was pressure to place food orders quickly, even though we were just settling in. We did order appetizers and later entrees--not an unreasonable timeline--but it felt like we were being hurried for no reason. The real issue came when we ordered a gluten-free pizza with toppings. What was delivered was essentially a round piece of bread with toppings -- not remotely what we expected. We tried several times to flag down the bartender, who proved extremely difficult to get the attention of. When we finally spoke to him and explained the error, the pizza was taken back, but then... nothing. We waited. And waited. More than 30 minutes passed while the rest of us finished our meals -- and still no replacement pizza. When we brought it up again, the bartender's attitude was indifferent at best. Frustrated, I went to the hostess stand and explained the situation. To their credit, the response was immediate: a manager stepped in, apologized, offered a round of drinks on the house, and ensured the corrected dish came out quickly. That level of service--from the manager and hostess--was appreciated and helped salvage the evening, but the overall experience was the worst we've ever had at The Modern. We may go back, but it will be with hesitation. The service at the bar needs serious attention. A restaurant of this caliber should never let service--or guest experience--slip this far.

Our waiter, Ramon M., was exceptional--warm, knowledgeable, and attentive throughout. His recommendation for my entrée was spot on. I had dined here once before for a busy Saturday night dinner, so it was especially nice to experience a quieter, more relaxed lunch this time around--a completely different vibe, but just as enjoyable. We skipped the complimentary bread and ordered the garlic bread instead--absolutely worth it. Warm, flavorful, and truly delicious. For appetizers, my husband had the arancini rice balls, while I ordered the artichoke hearts oreganato. Both were excellent--well-prepared, flavorful, and satisfying. For mains, I followed Ramon's suggestion and went with the sole Francese, paired with a side of linguine in garlic and oil. The fish was incredibly tender, fresh, and absolutely flavorful--cooked perfectly. In fact, as I'm writing this review, I'm still thinking about it and already looking forward to coming back to have it again. My husband's rigatoni filetto di pomodoro was equally impressive--simple, classic, and full of flavor. Even though we were completely full--and had leftovers to take home--we couldn't resist dessert. The tiramisu was the perfect ending: light, balanced, and just the right touch of sweetness. Great food, beautiful weather, and a relaxed atmosphere made for a perfect afternoon. A spot that's just as enjoyable for a lively dinner as it is for a relaxed lunch.

For those who live in Co-op City and the immediate vicinity, this is place I would keep steadily on repeat. Part of my experience was navigating the MTA subway, specifically the 2 and 5 trains, thinking Baychester Ave on the 5 was the best stop, but the end of the line at Eastchester-Dyre Avenue may be better. Walking Tillotson Ave from Baychester, you have to know how to take Tillotson to its apparent end along the New England Thruway and where to cross a pedestrian walkway that passes over I-95 to access the continuation of Tillotson on the Co-op City side of I-95. Access to Kaijin can be a factor in your experience, but the experience adds to my knowledge of NYC and how to do it again, because Kaijin is worthwhile to experience again. I arrived around 4:30 on a Saturday. This was a mistake. I would arrive when the restaurant opens or when the dinner rush calms down after seven. As a single person, they will lower your priority on the wait-list. I checked a few times as my number 16 was passed over until I insisted when number 32 was called. They could improve the management of the wait-list. They are trying to seat as many people as possible and many come as large parties for birthdays and from Connecticut and Virginia I overheard. Right off I-95, Kaijin has become a destination, so you are better to visit on a weekday and avoid the weekends if possible. Getting right to the point, the steamed lobster tails come out hot, buttered and well seasoned. On a crowded Saturday, a few people are very aggressive with one woman being offensive. I didn't escalate, but I can see this becoming a hostile scene. They bring out the lobster tails and ring a bell to let everyone know. Waiting for my second lobster tail around the 70 minute mark, I had my plate ready. On a busy weekend afternoon or evening, you will be lucky to have three lobster tails. I did not take any pictures after a lengthy trip to the restaurant and about an hour wait. There is something for everyone and it's not all seafood. The fried chicken looked great. I never got over to the sushi or salad and cold items buffet . The steak and beef short ribs cut the Asian style were not as tender and tasty as I had hoped. The baked salmon was good. The steamed deveined shrimp were better, along with the mussels, both very fresh and well seasoned; though, the shrimp can become overcooked if sitting out too long. The buttery seafood shells, crispy calamari and fried fish were excellent and I ate plenty. That fried fish was crispy on the outside with seasoned batter and flaky inside, almost like cod! I was not in the mood to eat the always plentiful crab legs after my efforts this Saturday. The lobster was superb, but I only managed two. I did not get to the ice cream and desserts. I can understand there is plenty of room for a more glowing review if you are able to access Kaijin at a better day and time, but my reviews are based on facts and real time experience. One could come for the $24 weekday lunch buffet, minus the lobster, or come for the $39 dinner buffet with the lobster on a weekday evening. Given the dinner buffet is open all weekend, I imagine you are better arriving very early or perhaps come after seven on a weekend. Almost everyone behaved well under the circumstances. When I was finally seated, the server quickly took my drink order, lemon iced tea, and never let my glass go empty. My plates and napkins were cleared regularly and efficiently. They did not rush you with the bill at the ninety minute mark and my table was made ready for the next guests by the time I put on my hat and backpack. The bathroom in the back right corner was clean on the way out. 3.7 stars, but could be better on a weekday.
