This company sucks... ...in terms of consistently jacking up the prices, the ridiculously slow bandwidth/ speed they provide and the level of customer service. I got an offer from xfinity for their $30 customer service and took it. When I asked DSL extreme to disconnect their service, they sent me an email saying they were working on it. No disconnect date, final bill, instructions on whether to return their equipment, etc. When I called to find out and mentioned this, the customer service rep just chuckled, before hastily arranging an email to provide the info I was lacking. I have been a DSL extreme customer since 1999 when I started with dial-up. For most of that time they were decent. In the last 8 to 10 years their service has plummeted. I get outages, can't reach the DNS servers and I've tried every public DNS server out there. ​I simply can't recommend them for anything but cancellation and finding a new provider. read more

Dslextreme is a waste. They suck the soul of its life force. They piggyback on Att lines or maybe are Att at this point but nevertheless they cost more and do less. I cannot stand having to communicate with the next Dudley Doless at this idiot outfit. 25 years ago I signed up for their at the time super duper fast internet boasting 768 kbps speed. All the while Att was offering 1.5 Mbps for the same cost but who in their right mind would pay Att to sniff their a** they are so unworthy. Att is like the plague. Stay away. Run! Anyway I eventually cancelled Dslextreme and went with Att just to add anguish and hypocrisy to the mix. Thankfully I came to my senses and did away with them too and now have wireless 5G internet which sucks but not the soul sucking life extraction that dslextreme or Att were and are. I still deal with Dslextreme for my email. I pay a monthly fee to have my email accounts error code on me regularly. No send No receive and somehow it's never dslextreme or the mail service dump they utilizes' fault. It's always my device that decides to screw up email. For no reason. No settings change. DON'T even think about getting this internet provider. I have been their customer since 2005 and everything was fine untill they were bought by AT&T ~ a year ago. I was paying $27 per month for fifteen years but as soon as AT&T bought them my price went up immediately to $60 per month for the same service. I agreed to it but after one year of usage i had to cancel because connection was horrible. I work from home and at least four full days per month I simply did not have internet. It just did not work for the whole day . I had to run to Starbucks because i needed to be online for my job. I could not stand it anymore and cancelled my service with them. They had the nerve to charge me $250 for cancelling the contract for their slow internet that did not even work properly. I signed up with Spectrum for $48 per month . It is a lot faster and no interruptions that lasted the whole day like it was with DSL Extreme/AT&T. read more

I've been with DSL Extreme since 2001. Yes, the original company was sold to Ikano Communications. Yes, they are an AT&T/Verizon reseller. Now... my local Customer Service rep (in Chatsworth, probably working from home,) is Dumitru H. A squirrel managed to chew through my 1GB fiber somewhere between the POI at the house, and 1/2 way to the box. The one thing I'll observe is I'm also a heavy AT&T Wireless, and former AT&T DSL customer. And the one thing I really dislike about AT&T is their robochat customer service which is like they're firewalling their actual technical service reps behind endless chatbot questions. My local DSL Extreme rep, Dumitru is really good at navigating past the firewalls because... as a reseller, DSL Extreme is considered an AT&T Enterprise/Business customer, not an AT&T consumer customer. As such, Dumitru was kind enough to furnish the AT&T Express ticket query information so I can also keep up with whenever the outside line technician (the MST) actually checks his work queue and shows up to re-run the fiber. It also exposed how the original 2 AT&T techs ended up delaying the repair because the first blamed it on a de-construct order at the switch, and the 2nd was an inside-only network engineer and had to refer it to MST. I'm sure eventually 5G will be deployed in my Bermuda Triangle area of LA that only has weak 4GLTE (I'm using a Verizon MiFi with 2 bars of signal right now on backup). And that might be the fatal blow to all direct-wire, cable and fiber internet. I've even been considering Starlink (Order now to reserve your Starlink. Starlink expects to expand service in your area in 2023. You will receive a notification once your Starlink is ready to ship. $110/mo for service and $599 for hardware. Wee...) But I also have backup hotspot via the iPhones with a couple hundred GB available, so I can be patient. DSL Extreme's one odd quirk for me has been they generally don't tell you when your contract is up for expiration (at which time your monthly billing will roll to the pre-contract rate). You can extend your contract by year at any time towards the last couple months of it, and freeze the prior rate, or upgrade and re-contract for a higher service, often at a similar or lower rate. I tend to do that, so over the past 5 years, I've jumped from 20Mbps to 40Mbps to 80Mbps to 100Mbps to 1000Mbps service at almost the same price per month. I won't do cable, I haven't got T-Mobile or AT&T 5G available, and Frontier/Verizon/Google fiber isn't in my area yet after 6 years. And as above, my experience with AT&T Internet support (not available from the local stores either) keeps me with DSL Extreme. Ymmv. But before the squirrel, my avg. was 980Mbps Down and 995Mbps Up. read more

Absolutely horrid. I've been without useable service for the last six weeks. First it was running so slow I couldn't send an email. They told me to upgrade so I did (even though my package worked fine for six years). When the tech came to upgrade it was shut off entirely. I HAVE NO SERVICE NOW and they are STILL BILLING ME. I'm beginning to suspect they slowed down my service to force me into a contract (I've been month to month for years). Now that I'm in a contract they don't care- every time I call it's not their fault or problem (they blame att&t and att&t techs blame them) THEY AREN'T PROVIDING ANY SERVICE, ARE STILL BILLING ME, and TREAT ME HORRIBLY every time I call to complain - like something's wrong with me for being upset I haven't had internet for weeks. The internet service is mediocre at best. The business is unprofessionally managed. There's no interest in creating or retaining loyal customers. They hide behind procedures and processes to ensure that you do not get help with your issues. A supervisor is NEVER available, and has never called back in the allotted 24-48 hour timeframe given. They only stay in business by refusing to process cancellations without many hours of waiting on hold. Our service has been down since April, but they are refusing to credit us for the down time. Sadly, they are no longer the great company they were back in 2005, we have given up and fought our way through cancelling our service - it took us over 6 hours of our time to get it done. :-( read more

I paid for your service, called the number and filed a complaint but the worker at the office said, "We're sorry you're not happy with your service" and they gave me the same number I dialed. DSLextreme is a low cost provider using ATT lines. My service was constantly slowing down because ATT doesn't want to be forced to provide low cost service to third parties. ATT decides how fast your DSL will be at any given time. I lost my credit card, and had to add a new card since I had autopay. The next day my card was used all over the United States. DSL was the only company that had my new number, so I know it was someone internal. I reported this to customer service and they really didn't seem to care. And when my credit card expired on my account with DSL, I was never contacted for an updated card and they cut my service without any notice. Bad company. read more

We have had DSL Extreme (DSLE) for too long coupled with AT&T. Although not all DSL Extreme's fault other than DSLE's horrible customer service. AT&T has actually pulled off the jumpers in their switch for our DSL three times in the past year. It is so troubling to go through DSLE Tier 1 Customer Service, then repeat all confirming information after transferred to DSLE Tier 2 Customer Service. (Ticket #7584593) Been off Line since 5/28, sent email then opened ticket. Now we have AT&T coming out 6/3 between the hours of 8am & 5pm. Wow. Looking into alternate ISP's to avoid this continued fiasco with DSLE and AT&T. Actually called Spectrum today 6/2, they can install this afternoon if we desire. 1-Day for new Cable Internet service (50X faster), 7 days if DSLE goes out to send technician. This time I got a very rude person. Called to see what was happening. The tech said they don't have WiFi. Had to repeat, has frontier checked out their to see why I wasn't getting a signal. After informing me, in October, that my internet service would no longer be available after November 2, I canceled their service. On November 8, six days after my account should have been closed, they put another charge on my credit card. I have had DSL Extreme for about a year and a half. Getting set up with service took forever and I thought my wife was going to strangle me. It was a couple months between when I called to order service and when we actually got service and during that time we were without internet service for over a month. Even worse, our home phone was out for a couple weeks so we missed a bunch of important calls. That said, I think the local telephone company (Verizon) was more to blame then DSL Extreme, and the folks at DSL Extreme were always very pleasant to deal with and appeared to be working hard to get things sorted out. Now that the service is working my family is very happy with it. Our service is faster than advertised (7.6 Mbps vs. the 7.1 Mbps we were told we would get), which is over twice as fast as the fastest speed offered by Verizon in our town. By in large the service has been pretty reliable, with perhaps two or three brief service interruptions since getting DSL Extreme. You just need to remember to reboot your DSL modem if things ever slow down or stop working, and that almost always improves things. I also found that replacing the old DSL modem I got free from a phone company ca. 2004 with a new one really helped with the reliability. One other thing is that the VOIP phone service they sell (Broadvoice) has never worked very well (poor call quality and a lot of disconnects), even when the router is configured according to their instructions. I think their servers may simply not have a very direct connection to me, since other VOIP services such as T-Mobile Wi-Fi Calling and TextNow work flawlessly over the same DSL connection. read more

My review from when I had DSL Extreme. The best thing about DSL Extreme is that they have cheap internet service. When you sign up for a 12-month contract, you get the best rates. For me, I got 3000kbs/512kbs for $14.95 plus a $2.88 fee, so it comes out to $17.83 a month. DSL Extreme leases out either AT&T or Verizon lines, so your service will actually come from the one in your area. For me, it's AT&T. The reason I switched was to save money. I was getting the same speed from AT&T for $28.40/month and when I called to see if I could get a better rate, they offered me $25/month for 12-months without a contract. I took it, but then decided to save more by going to DSL Extreme. (DSL Extreme leases AT&T lines anyways). The customer service can be better at DSL Extreme which is why I only gave the company 4 stars. Once you switch to DSL Extreme, it takes about a week for them to switch over and you'll be down for 24 to 48 hours. In my case, it was about 36 hours that I didn't have internet access. Their actual technical support is only available Monday-Friday 9-5 pacific time. Outside of these hours, including weekends, your call goes to India where they read from a script that involves rebooting your modem. If you have a real issue (bad modem, line down, firmware needs manually upgrading, etc), it can only be addressed Monday-Friday 9-5. They may promise a call back within 24 hours, but you won't receive a call back until their normal business hours. The India answering service is just that--an answering service that creates a list of things to do for the real US based technical support. Maintaining real support only during normal business hours is unacceptable when ISPs have 24 hour service. This isn't an anomaly or an accident. This is how the company purposefully does business. Don't reply here apologizing that I had a bad experience. Everyone has a bad experience at DSL Extreme, not because someone made a mistake, but because the technical support is inadequate and only operates Monday - Friday, 9-5pm. Look at DSL Extreme's rating on Trust Pilot and Yelp and others. It's dismal. I don't understand why the state of California Department of Consumer Affairs hasn't shutdown this company. DSL Extreme just resells service from other providers like AT&T. It's better to go with the underlying service provider who can actually help you when you need it, instead of allowing your internet to stay down until a M-F 9-5. Does your power company do that? Of course not! It's 2018 and internet is every bit as necessary as electricity. You'll get far better service if you just bypass DSL Extreme and use the underlying provider. As soon as AT&T finishes Fiber in my area, I'm gone from DSL Extreme. EDIT 9/10/18 @ 11am: 54 hours, no response. I called during normal business hours and was sent to India. This time, India sent me to Tier 2 technical support where's several seconds between when the technical support person speaks and I hear or vice versa. After a 30 minute wait, Tier 2 said, "Yeah, this is a physical outtage. Let me call AT&T and I'll call you back. 3 days of no internet and only then did they notify AT&T? EDIT 9/10/18 @ 5pm: You guessed it. They never called back to tell me what AT&T said. I waited an hour on the phone to talk to tier 2 technical support at 5pm only for them to tell me AT&T will arrive tomorrow between 4pm and 8pm. How would I know that? The ticket wasn't updated and the no one called. Tomorrow, when the AT&T technician arrives (assuming DSL Extreme is actually telling the truth), I'm going to beg him to switch me over to AT&T directly to finally be done with DSL Extreme. read more

They are now owned by Ikano Communications, Inc. out of Salt Lake City and the customer support has been outsourced to the Philippines. If you are a customer and you need support, do not dial their toll-free number. Call Ikano's corporate office at (801) 924-0900. This is a toll call but it will be worth it. Dial extension 132 and ask for George Naspo, the President and CEO. Tell him your problem and that you want a customer support representative FROM AMERICA who speaks proper English to call you. If enough customers call the corporate office, they will bring the customer support function back to America. Do not allow a company to outsource jobs to foreign countries when you are paying for their service. read more

Make sure you check the speed you are getting compared to what you are paying for! I've been a customer for over 4 years at this address. What I didn't know was that the phone lines from ATT were old and couldn't carry the load. I've had 1.1-1.4 MBS for years... couldn't stream shows ..lost connections... etc..... Well I just found out after much yelling and cursing that I was paying for 12MBS and it's possible to get it when you get the right tech to work with you. Once they got ATT to replace/repair the line to the pole... I finally have a constant 11MBS. It's just like anything else... in order to complain properly you have to KNOW as much as the person you are calling! I'll keep them for now, because the plan is cheaper and simpler but buyer beware! I currently use them, but not by choice. The only other company is AT&T which I would just have to pay twice as much for the same exact service since, essentially AT&T is providing the service anyways. They Lie, they flat out blatantly lie to the customer. Unfortunately these scams probably work all the time but every now and then then will run into a customer like me who seems to know more about the service they provide than they do! I recently signed up for the no phone service required version of DSL (this is fairly new to me so I wan't exactly sure how this worked). They said they had to send a tech out to run new lines because they do not use the same standard phone line (I told them I had run fresh cat5e that was being used as a telephone DSL line (yes you can do this), and they said it didn't matter). They also said I would not be able to use my old DSL modem and needed a special non PPOE modem for the service. It would be $100 to have the new line added, and $100 for the new special DSL modem (which they could not clearly tell me why I needed it other than it uses a non PPOE protocol) So ATT comes to my house and says something like "hey since you no longer are going to have phone service with us, I'm just going to use that line for your data only DSL line). I was pissed, but unfortunately it wasn't the techs fault since he works for ATT not DSL extreme... So he dropped off the modem, didn't configure it and I was charged some like $100 or more and another $100 for the modem. Well it's been nearly 6 months now, internet is still working fine, and I have never used the new modem! They basically just charged me $200+ for nothing. read more

I have had DSL Extreme for probably 7 or more years now and I have had problems, but all of them have been solved quickly and easily by either customer service or tech support, (nothing in the past 5 or 6 years though.) Probably the most difficult part of the process was getting set up, but that was mainly the fault of Verizon, who kept playing games setting up my dry loop DSL. Ultimately, they wouldn't connect my new line, they were only willing to come and tag the new line, requiring me to go out and screw it in myself. Really no big deal, but really Verizon aka Frontier, very childish. So I am existing on slightly less than 3Mbps for everything, and yes, I do mean everything. I stream all my TV, movies, etc. with no buffering, I use a Magic Jack for a home phone on the rare occasion that I need it, and internet, e-mail, etc. It all runs about $35 a month, and the only increase I have ever had is after my first year promotion ended. If you are concerned that you may not be happy with their service, they do offer a month-to-month deal for an extra $5 per month, but apparently that only kicks in after your first year, so never mind I guess. For everyone who has had issues with their customer service, I would just point out that at least some people seem to have had positive experiences, unlike all the other possible options like Charter, Time Warner, AT&T or Frontier. No matter how bad you might think DSL Extreme is, there seriously is no other option available if you're looking for something cheap. If you're looking for super fast speed, that may not be possible. In my area, there are only 3 and 7 mbps options, but for the price and service, unless you really need the extra bandwidth and in order to avoid having to deal with the giant corporate entities, I would recommend DSL Extreme. Also, if you're just getting super high speed internet because of your kids, tell them to go outside and play with a ball or something. This is a small local company, not a giant national corporation, so you should feel confident trying them knowing that you can always return to the only 2 other options you probably have. All promotions aside, if price is a concern for you, they can provide a reliable connection for about 1/2 the price of what is offered by your cable or phone provider. Do be sure to get a guaranteed grace period to try them out though, because almost all of the problems I had and have read about seem to occur in the first few weeks or with the setup, which will be done by the phone company in your area who won't be happy that they have to service the line for a third party company. Can you get much higher speed if you pay twice as much? Yes. But if you're cheap and willing to deal with potential set up issues, this just may work for you. Not WILL, just may work. Also, if you have had DSL Extreme for a while and start experiencing speed problems, you may want to consider a new router. I was still using an old wireless G router and started having my wifi go down a couple times a day, so I bought a newer, used wireless N router on ebay for about $20 and that fixed my problem. Also, if you notice your wifi slowing down, try turning off your modem and router for a while, then turning them back on again. This could save you some time on the phone with customer service as it's probably what they will tell you. It helps if you know what you're doing, or know someone who does. You should probably consider all the negative reviews though and their F rating with the Better Business Bureau. I'm really only with them because they are the cheapest option. The next best option for me is Charter which, after a one year promo period is just about twice what I pay DSL Extreme, and I'd rather spend that extra $30 a month on some good BBQ. read more

Don't bother. I've been a loyal customer (at least 3 houses and perhaps a decade total of service over the last 15 years), and referred them to a number of other people. Last July, I downgraded my service which apparently kicked-off a new 12-month contract. Come to now and I had to move very quickly. I called them to ask about moving my service, and told them I urgently needed the service at the new house. They said they would see what they could do. After three days of not hearing anything about an install date, I was forced to call AT&T and order their Fiber, which was installed two days later. At the same time, I tried calling their office to cancel the order. I only got a recording that said the entire staff (!?) is at a company training and to call back in 30 minutes. Multiple calls and multiple hours later, they were still not answering the phone. So, I emailed (replied to the email they sent me to confirm the order) and said I need to cancel the move and end my service. I got no reply. Six days later I emailed again to the same thread requesting a cancelation and confirmation. No reply. Another six days later I again emailed, and again got no reply. I even logged into my account online and saw that my emails were indeed going into my account under an "Open" ticket that had no action on it. Last night, I get an email saying that my install is scheduled for tomorrow! What?! So I give them a call, and they start the process to cancel, but have nothing to say at all about why they didn't respond to any of my requests to cancel before, AND that they will make the cancelation request effective today and that I will have to pay out two more months of service because of my downgraded "contract." Sure, they can stick it to me because yes, it was a 12-month contract. However, this is the worst kind of service you give to someone who has given a decade of loyal service, referred other customers to them, had three solid continuous years of service up to now, and who had received terrible customer support during this move. I got no apology for the lousy slow, non-responsive service, and only a "too bad for you -- you signed a contract" retorts. I'll pay out this garbage, I'm no cheat, but I'll never use them again, and I'm livid that this is going to be the first Yelp review I write. I've had DSL Extreme for the last ten (10) years. My comments: The good: Responsive technical support, particularly with connection issues. Price point is decent for a generally trouble-free service. The bad: The company used to be more responsive to billing and subscription issues. The ugly: If your local phone company is Verizon, your options are very limited. The higher speed services, including Fusion and True Stream, aren't available in your area. In my particular circumstance, Verizon FiOS isn't available, other than the traditional 3 MB service offered over the phone company's copper, my only other option is the local cable company. I'll stick with my current plan with DSL Extreme, but wish I had more of the company's options available to customers served by other local phone companies. read more

I usually try not to YELP while livid, but today is the exception. I'd give these jokers negative stars if I could. As an initial point, the internet service sucks. So, that's a great starting point for an internet service provider. Also, notably, customer service sucks. They won't address problems for you when you are off contract unless you sign a new contract, and then they only barely address the issues and seem to revel in sticking it to their customers. Recently, I've been resetting my modem and calling customer service a few times a week (every other day or so) because the internet is so slow. Apparently because they "cannot figure out what the problem is" (likely because they haven't checked or done any trouble-shooting) there's nothing they can do for me about the lack of actual internet. I'm pretty sure the dial-up I had in 2000 in college was faster. As a super fun extra example, I'm moving this month and they literally don't offer internet at my new address (inside the city limits - Logan - for crying out loud). However, that fact--that they don't provide service to my address--is specifically enumerated as a fact that does not terminate my obligation to pay the remainder of the contract. They insist that I have to pay them the duration of my contract (5 months) OR a cancellation fee (conveniently the cost of 5 months of my contract). I negotiated that down to half and honestly, it's worth $100+ bucks to NEVER BE THEIR CUSTOMER AGAIN. Seriously, this company and this internet SUCKS. I legit just created another account on "Consumer Affairs" just to review this company as many places as possible. I've actually never done that before but these guys are a whole new world of terrible. May the odds be in your favor if you make this gamble. read more
