My friends and I went here on a late Saturday afternoon to play some board games. We had a great time. The beer was on point, the giant pretzel or "brezel" I ordered was pretty good, although I found the delicious add-on cheese to be extremely overpriced. It was an extra $5 for my already super-sized pretzel at $10. So yes, $15 all invested into some bread and cheese. I will say that without the cheese (or as they call it obazda) I'm not sure I would have been able to eat the entire pretzel. Also, cheese note: I expected some sort of dipping beer cheese, but it is more like a cream cheese based spread. My only REAL complaint was that I was disappointed with the owner's response to my request to close one of the windows closest to our table. It was one of those completely unrealistic spring days (March 30th) where the high probably peaked at 59 degrees, but by 5pm the temperature had significantly dropped and the breeze was gusting inside and freezing us all. Everyone remotely close to the completely open windows had their jackets and coats on. The overly positive souls who sat outside were now all huddled together under blankets. I'm not joking. The owner supplied them blankets. I approached the bartender first about closing the window and he said that it would probably not happen because the owner wanted it open. I thought that was pretty ridiculous, because the customer is always right, correct? So I thought surely, if I talk to the owner myself she would understand. The bartender wouldn't point her out, so I basically just guessed and approached her. Of course she was wearing a giant scarf lol. I asked nicely if we could please close the window, or even just half of the window, we're very cold, etc, etc. She just flat out said no, and that she thinks everyone wants the windows open. That people were enjoying the windows being open... as we both surveyed the bar filled with people with blankets and jackets on. It was like a Seinfeld episode or something. Eventually some other patron who was sitting directly in the window closed the damn thing himself and we silently applauded. OTHERWISE, great experience! I do plan on coming back, but I hope that they are more considerate of their guests in the future. read more

So lovely. My friend and I speak German although neither of us are. I'm a Yank and she is a Dutch national. We were eager to have Brats und Bier at a Stammkneipe (German pub). This place is the real deal. Not only that but the service was very kind from the host to our waiter. We are two older women past that certain age. We were made to be quite welcome. I also noted a younger person or two enjoying a beer while comfortably reading a book. If I lived in this neighborhood, sadly, I do not, this Stammkneipe would be my local..as the Brits say. I'm not sure about any other times, but Der Schwarze Kölner is perfect for drinking irresponsibly on a Sunday afternoon. I like to order the Spaten Optimator, because it reminds me of a restaurant I used to work at. And also because that's the best beer name ever. It makes everything optimal. By getting you drunk. If you go in with eight of your friends, the cute German waitress will patiently bring you all tastes of whatever you think you might like, tolerate your wishy-washiness, and then get all your orders right, which is both nice and impressive. As of yet, I'm unimpressed with the food. The prices are reasonable, but the kielbasa, pretzels and the sweet bread basket were all a little weak. I also ordered the Strammer Max (basically ham and a runny egg on toast), because according to the blurb on the menu, Strong Max is slang for an erection (the name Max means penis, evidently) and the dish is supposed to strengthen the sexual prowess of the person eating it. I had a great time at this spot this week after work. It's a perfect casual location to meet up with friends in groups big and small as there are lots of seating options and a very laid back vibe. And who doesn't like beer and brats? They even have vegan brats! I went with the chicken brat, which was probably one of the better chicken sausages I've had in a long time. I also loved the warm pretzel bun and the crispy onion topping that I selected. The fries were also fresh and hot, and though I wished it came with curry ketchup instead of just regular ketchup and mayo, I still very much enjoyed it. The food and vibe were nice but what took it to great was the excellent server we had that night. He helped us easily move from a small to a large group, move locations, add items to our order, etc, all with a smile on his face and kind words every chance he got. We stumbled into this spot to partake in a cold libation after attending a recent brisket king competition close by. Had a thirst for a cold beer, and German is one of my favs. To me it didn't really look like a German styled spot but more like a place that used to be a diner or other restaurant that they took over. Not really authentic looking as I like my German beer hall type spots to look more like one. Decent prices but cash only? For a place that serves up both beer and a full menu of food items taking credit cards is a must. Way too many bro's being obnoxiously loud and playing foosball when we were here. Huge draft German beer list including kölsch, zwickel, schwarzbier and pilsners, plus friendly fast service in this indoor beer "garden" (it's not a garden). But sauerkraut shouldn't be yellow and a 7oz (200ml) kölsch shouldn't be $4.50 ouch. Yes this light ale is served in the correct narrow tall glass but you can't go thru these perfect little flutes like you want at five bucks a crack. The monster pretzel is very good, the fries are excellent. A sausage sampler platter for $11 has 2 perfect wursts and some poorly cooked red cabbage (maybe forgot the clove and red wine). Potato pancakes are perfectly deep fried but not tasty, forgot the onion maybe? Apfelstrudel for dessert was excellent. Disclaimer, I am hugely biased towards German food and love to visit places that serve it. Alas the food was just average at Die Stammkneipe (or is it the Schwarze Kölner? two names are confusing). Maybe I'm just not a Brooklynite but I was pleasantly surprised at the environs and beer/food here. We were running late to a play at Irondale nearby and stumbled into this place and found our faces full of weiners and mustard in no time. The name is elusive- so my one suggestion would be for them to spell out their signage more but whatever. I would also recommend ordering simply off the menu and don't try to substitute much of anything because they won't do it. Lastly, stick to German bier. That's what they do best here. The IPA I tasted had a bitter cloying taste that shouldn't be there. The Dunkel was superb. The cheese for the Bretzel was tasty as was the curry sausage and sauerkraut and relish. Went to trivia at DSK Brooklyn on Wednesday evening. It was a lively crowd for the event, but it is hard to be too excited with inconsistent food, the hot and stuffy space, and the missing service. Quality: Visited DSK Brooklyn for its Wednesday night trivia. While we were there indulged in some beers and snacks. For beer they had about fifteen on draft, all old-world style. I enjoyed the Braufactum Progusta IPA, Sion Kolsch, and HB Original Lager, each a solid choice. I was less excited about the food we ordered. My Regular Brezel was overdone, leaving it too crispy and with a burnt taste. Our table ordered one later in the night that was better, which hopefully suggests mine was just an aberration. Next was the Sausage Platter, which we got with Kielbasa and Cheddar Brat. It was okay, with the Cheddar Brat significantly better than the Kielbasa, but I really did not like the Sauerkraut we substituted into the dish at all. The Kartoffelsalat, or German Potato Salad was a big disappointment, we had hoped for fries and they had run out, so this second option was not an adequate substitution. Quantity: I stuck with standard pours, but whether you go with the 1L or Boot pours, the beers can be huge. The food was a bit smaller than I expected, but reasonable for the prices. Value: $5 for a Regular Brezel. $13 for the Sausage Platter. $5 for the Kartoffelsalat. $7.50-$9.50 for 0.5L of Draft Beers. Ambiance: DSK Brooklyn is located in the Fort Greene area of Brooklyn. In a small little square, it has a good space that allows it to maximize outdoor area. Since we were playing trivia we sat inside, but the garden space they had outside seemed very nice. Inside they had a bunch of long benches and smaller tables spread across the space. There is a bar area, with some deer heads hanging above it and flags and soccer memorabilia throughout. A large screen was ready to be pulled down on one wall for big games. The problem however was the temperature. It was stuffy and hot, and the fans that could barely turn were not doing anything. It makes it hard to justify a summer visit, unless you are ready to sweat. Crowd: Trivia had the restaurant packed, but even the outside area was busy on a warm summer evening. Service: They were struggling a lot and it was clear they did not have enough staff. On a busy evening, it felt like only one person was taking orders and he was relatively new. Food and drinks were slow and several items were forgotten from our orders. Like many restaurants, they seem greatly impacted by the current labor shortage. Total Transplant Central. It's like a Murray Hill sports bar spawned with the crowd pouring out of MSG, post-Rangers game then arm wrestled the lamest frat on campus. I'm a native New Yorker and I'll never understand why some people move here just to re-create the suburbs. "Trivia Night" seems very popular with people I'd guess like "Fun T-Shirt Fridays" at work. This is a pretty good place for a quick bite and some beer. It is not really a beer garden, but more of a German Restaurant. The food actually was really good and inexpensive. I got the cheese sausage which is served with stone ground mustard and a pretzel. I also got there version of fried potatoes (fries) which was a potato pancake, and was very tasty served with a version of applesauce and sour cream. The beer was also reasonably priced, but not a huge tap selection. Also the waitress was very friendly, but she was the only one working so it took a while to get beer and food. It was my first time there so I don't know if this is always the case, but worth checking out. read more

So I've been told that they changed owners a few years ago and it shows. I used to love coming to this place for beer. Every time I was in town, I would make it a point to come here and get a beer. It used to have such a great vibe and a ton of good German beer. Sadly, that is no more. The beer list is now kind of pathetic and just the whole vibe is just 'meh' now. We came on a Thursday night (I know, benefit of the doubt that it wasn't a weekend and I shouldn't expect any less) recently and was one of two groups there that night. There were a few servers working that night, but they seemed to want to stay behind the bar most of the night. I felt like the servers rushed us out even though we were prepared to drink to the bottom of the barrel, and the fact that it was a little past midnight and we still had a few more hours before their posted closing time. The hours on Yelp showed that they were opened until 2 a.m. There was one server in particular that kept coming to our table saying something to the girls in our group, in which they found to be weird. He apologized about them closing early, but just his behavior we just found to be really weird. What a shame. Sadly, I doubt I'll be coming back here again because it's just not the same anymore. read more

I really need to know the criteria for classifying oneself as a beer garden. I guess technically my apt could be a beer garden. I often have different types of beer in my apt and I guess I could also put 2 tables outside of my apt and then I could be a beer garden, but I digress. It's kind of hard to take someone seriously when you ask for a Coke and they tell you that they don't have it because they don't believe in high fructose corn syrup. Der Schwarze Kolner if you can ever remember the name is an awesome spot to recommend for some drinks. The reason why I put the quotation marks up (in the review and in person) is because as many people have pointed out there really isn't any real outdoor area which has become the standard (SEE WHAT I DID THERE?) of beer gardens. Though they do have seats around the outside of the establishment on nice days. Fort Greene is beautiful and it's a lovely corner to take it all in. A problem that others have pointed out, IS THAT YOU HAVE TO SCREAM TO HAVE A CONVERSATION. The acoustics are terrible here. However if you can get past the noise level which sometimes isn't all that bad and the fact there isn't any true outdoor seating, then you can have a pretty rad time. First off I love the beer selection. They have some bitchin brews and in some big boy sizes. Get me there on a good head, with a stomach ready for some beer, my drinking cap on and order me a big boy hefeweizen. I'll down that quick! The food isn't the most amazing but I think it's solid. Typical German bar food but there is one thing I must sell you on. Their meatloaf sandwich. Comes with egg on top. It's really good. I'm making myself hungry right now. Filling up on food and beer. Time to burn some calories playing some intense games of foosball. I warn you, I don't play around. Getting too close to the table there buddy, not my fault you got impaled by the rod. Great beers, great location. But what's with the interior? The tables are laid out pretty randomly so even if all the seats are taken it doesn't really look full. Part of what I think a beer hall should be is full and bubbling over with both beer and happiness (wait, is there a difference??) Our server was really helpful and nice, and could describe all the beers on the menu, but I would have liked to have a little more direction from the menu itself. Also, this place needs AC. Perhaps because it was only the second day they had been open, service was sketchy: I had to go to the bar to get the menu, and then the drinks. I've been here a few times and both experiences were delightful. I did not come for the beer but I did come for the brats. I like the different options of styles and can appreciate the fact that they offer vegan brats. I'm not vegan but I have friends w different dietary preferences and it's nice to find a unique spot. The brezel (pretzel) is so fresh and delicious, great for sharing. The cheese dip is a must. I saw an idiot comment here about how they put too much salt, we'll guess what, you can brush that shit off if it's too much. I just love that part of Fort Greene, they are in the best spot in that neighborhood. I'm also obsessed with this German soda they have called Afri-Cola, it's not as sweet as coke but has 3x the amount of caffeine. Take your friends here for a chill time. Came in on a frigid Friday when they apparently close early (1am). The bar are itself was full, but the rest of the space was almost entirely empty. As it was explained to me, the area doesn't have that many bars so it's lots of locals, with the crowds shifting from different places depending on the night (we fled weekend city craziness looking for a place to actually talk and found it here haha). Maybe the case is different in nicer weather or when they stay open later. They serve food late which is great, we ordered a giant pretzel and fries. The giant pretzel is comically large, unless you're having a serious craving I'd plan on splitting this with a couple of other people. The beer cheese it comes with is perfect. I can't pronounce the name of the place, or the beer I ordered. But it was a damn good beer, in a big impressive glass. Foosball, picnic tables, bright open layout with windows on two sides.
