Mmmmmmm I ordered a rootbeer expecting mug. It was 1919 on tap!!!!!!! They even served it in a mug with no ice! They brought us bread and crackers with cheese right away. Tiny little dive with 8 little tables. Food was ok. Nice waitress. read more

I don't do this review thing often but I felt obligated because the only other current review was from opening day and that's so unfair. The place is clean. The burgers were delicious the bartender is friendly and the atmosphere is good. The booze selection is also good. I wish I lived up here, I'd come in more often. As it is I'll come here every chance I get, which is as often as my boyfriend brings me up north. I don't know what it was like before but it has recently been bought out and the new owners have made every effort to give this place a new start, it's worth a second look even if you think you know what its like. My wife and I were staying with some friends at a cabin a few miles north of town. Since her family is from Mauston, we wandered down to try and find food on a Saturday morning. Mauston has a few restaurants, but we decided to just to whatever one was closest to where we got a parking spot. That's how we found the Dry Gulch. First tip: there's two entrances: the bar and the restaurant itself (restaurant entrance is the one toward the back of the building). Never made it in the bar but the restaurant looked like a typical midwestern restaurant, yellow rubber upholstery and all. It's kind of the smaller side, but they comfortably seated us (party of 8) and two other parties of 4. There was a little room after that still. I gotta say for a bar food place, they definitely have a pretty big variety of stuff. I think everyone at the table got something different, and while they weren't the biggest bar meals I'd ever got, they got the job taken care of. But, it's not like I'd drive 100 miles out of my way to get there. The place may have generic food, but the service was definitely above average. The waitress was definitely friendly and stopped by enough to refill drinks but not be annoying. Would definitely recommend it for cheap, fast and good enough food. read more

We went to the Dry Gulch for dinner after moving our daughter to the area. The establishment is rather dark and dingy looking and could use a little brightening up to make it more attractive and give it a fresh clean perception. When we asked for what beer was on tap, he stated there wasn't any, even though there were tappers behind the bar. We then asked for what bottled beer they had, and he said all kinds. All types were your basic generic beers. We then asked if he could make a kiddie cocktail. The bartender did not know how to make one. This is a very standard kid drink at any bar, especially in Wisconsin. When we asked for a menu, he gave us a plain white sheet of paper folded in half, with a poorly handwritten selection of offerings. We ordered several appetizers. All were overdone, although the jalapeno poppers were very good, regardless of being over fried. We had to ask for napkins as there were no plates. After the appetizers, we ordered burgers. When our orders came out, the bartender could not figure out which one belonged to each of us. I ended up with my fiancé's bacon burger, but it didn't even look like a bacon burger. It had little tiny bits of what appeared to be over fried bacon bits on top of the sautéed onions (which were also slightly over done). The burgers were overdone, with the outer edges almost being fried to a crisp and overall very dry. The next issue was that he came out with a plate of pickles and asked who wanted one and we had to pick them off the plate. When we asked him why he did that instead of placing them in our baskets he stated not everyone likes pickles. He told us it wasn't a five star restaurant. Really? I don't even think a five star restaurant serves pickles. Why not ask someone if they want a pickle before their meal is served and place it on your plate beforehand? The bartender also did not pay attention if someone needed a drink refill, and considering this is a bar, it would be detrimental to his business to pay attention. As a matter of fact, I never even was asked whether I wanted a drink. At the end of our amusing visit, we were ready to pay the bill and then discovered that they do not take credit/debit cards. There were no signs posted of the sort throughout the bar/restaurant. My fiancé ended up going down to a bar a few buildings away to take out money from an ATM. The bartender's explanation is that he doesn't carry credit cards, only cash, and he only accepts cash. Apparently he will be getting an ATM in the bar soon. We mentioned that he should be placing a notice somewhere, or at least inform customers that only cash is accepted before they even place an order. At the end of the day, apparently this was the first opening day of this establishment. Apparently he just purchased it from the previous owner and decided to open it, and in my opinion, was not totally prepared from a business standpoint. This will be our one and only visit here, regardless. read more
