What a fun place to stop along the Sparta Elroy trail! After about 12 miles, we needed some sustenance and this place was just a little off the trail. Very easy to find with the giant sign on the side of the trail. Overall, the visit was solid. We got there about 1245 right as the lunch rush hour was dying down. The staff was very busy with how many patrons were there. We did end up having to wait a bit to get served but honestly wasn't that bad. The waiter/manager guy was very perturbed about our wait and offered us complimentary drinks. We declined as we felt as though we weren't waiting that long. I got the jalapeño burger which was delicious after the bike ride. The pie is an absolute must and I'd feel disgusted by anyone who passes up on it. We got the pecan cream which to say it was a treat for the taste buds would be an understatement. It was worth every penny. Overall, the food was great for a mid bike of 24 miles. The service really wasn't that long of a wait. We were in and out of there from 1245 to about 130? Really not bad despite how they acted like we were waiting a long time. My husband, in-laws and I stopped here for lunch during our bike ride on the Sparta-Elroy trail. We arrive after standard lunch time and the place was packed, granted there are only about 12 tables. Instead of making us wait for an open table they suggested we share an 8 top table with a group of 2, which was fine. The building itself was beautiful and well maintained. It was quite smoky from the grill. Also the service was slow despite there only being 12 tables, but they certainly acknowledged this and offered free beverages. I got a cheeseburger and fries, which really hit the spot after our ride. The rest of our group seemed to enjoy their food. There is also a cute mercantile just around the corner to explore. read more

Found myself in rural Wisconsin for a work trip and am always wanting to try local restaurants instead of chains, and this stuck out in my search because of the novel idea of a refurbished schoolhouse. Glad I decided to go! I loved the warm atmosphere and homey feel, think Cracker Barrel but brighter and authentic, not the mass-produced country vibes. It was a peaceful environment to relax and unwind before dinner. The servers were attentive and helpful and just very pleasant/wholesome overall. Oh, and the prices are great!! $11 for a bacon cheeseburger+ fries. I was impressed with the size of burger patty and amount of cheese that came on it (I guess I am in the Cheese state after all!) and the bacon was good too, not the cheapo stuff. If my work travels ever bring me back this way I definitely will make it a tradition to stop for dinner here. read more

As part of my daughters wedding, Dorset Valley Schoolhouse Restaurant hosted the rehearsal dinner at their facility in Wilton, WI. To say the food there was amazing would be an understatement. As a life long resident of Wisconsin, I've had many fish fry's. This was the best I've ever had. I told the management there that whomever they get their fish from, they need to continue to get it from them. We had beer battered cod, baked cod, baked potato, cottage cheese, and coleslaw. When we needed more fish they accommodated immediately. Then it was topped off with some of the best pie you could ask for. Thanks so much to Debbie and the team for making the event special and for treating us like family. It was greatly appreciated and will never be forgotten. read more

Came for breakfast but they also have lunch and dinner. They serve alcohol as well. As of this review, the restaurant is OPEN despite the Yelp listing saying it's permanently closed. I have loved eating here in years past, but this summer when we stopped, they only had teenagers working at least out front and while they were working hard in the excessively hot dining room, customer service was definitely lacking. Do to the heat and fullness of the dining room tables, we and two other groups went out to the deck where the tables and benches were filthy from a winter's worth of dirt and grime. The waitress only brought a dish rag to one of the tables and seemed to forget they even had customers outside. I went in and got my own dishrag and beverages. After that the food was so-so. We will not be going back anytime soon. read more

What a great place to eat after riding the Elroy Sparta Rail Trail we stopped here for lunch. It was truly amazing and definitely will go back the next time we are in the area. The cheese burger was served on a homemade, fresh bun and the cheese burger itself was very tasty. Also the Reuben sandwich was very tasty. The proprietor was very cordial and was also our server. We did have a piece of the best banana cream pie that we shared. I could have sworn that my grandmother was hiding out in the kitchen because it tasted just like hers. On the menu list of pies was hickory nut pie and we asked him about it and he explained how instead of pecans he uses the hickory nut. We took a slice to go. We also bought some of his homemade bread that he said he makes daily. What a great find we found tucked away outside of Wilton, Wisconsin. read more

Very nice place. My wife and I have eaten there many times and will eat there again when we have a chance. The owner kept it running even when he could only keep one other staff person on, back when Tony Evers messed up the bike trail maintenance and the bike trail traffic disappeared. I highly recommend the food, and the repeat business of happy customers is what has kept him going, even through the roughest of times. I saw a review that was posted in 2019, and you have to understand that was during the worst of the dropoff in bike trail traffic. If the people who posted that had taken time to talk to the owner (he was probably the main person working there, and he is very, very sociable), they would have learned why the staffing was so short. I would point out that that review blamed the fullness of the tables in the dining room for part of the heat she found uncomfortable. Well, there's a jolly good reason those tables were full, even with the staff so deeply cut back. You can thank Tony Evers for the cutbacks. No maintenance, no bike trail. No bike trail, not a lot of business. Not a lot of business, hard to keep businesses going. And by the way, no businesses, no economy. Irresponsible policymaking has always been his specialty. Great food, service and atmosphere have always been specialties of the Dorset Valley School restaurant. read more

We were looking for a local Friday fish fry while camping at Wildcat Mountain State Park. One of the park rangers mentioned this place and we decided it give it a shot. Turns out to have been very good advice, indeed. It was quite inexpensive and all-you-can-eat, although that didn't matter since we were too full to ask for more. The cod was available baked or lightly battered and fried. Both versions were excellent, hot, and not overcooked. We had some Wollersheim Prairie Fumé, a tasty white Wisconsin wine, with dinner. The waitress enticed us with some home-made pie (made by her) but my wife and I were both too full to partake. I suspect it was great. Maybe on another visit... For local flavor, you can't beat it. The clientele all seemed to be local, not tourists like us. The restaurant is in an old refurbished one room school house and they run a small Amish furniture and crafts store in a back attached room. read more

We stayed in Wisconsin over the summer and had the pleasure of eating here several times. It's set in an old school house with appropriate decor. It's cute. But more importantly, the food is really good and the people who run it are very nice. I had the fried cod one time and the chicken tenders twice. Both very good. Plus the potato pancakes were terrific AND they make their own desserts. If it's available, get the cream puff. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. The pies are wonderful too. My husband had a hamburger; they make all their own bread, including buns, and he said it was very good. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. read more

Stopped in on a damp windy day of biking. Our party ordered burgers, ham (off the bone) croissant sandwich, blt, and excellent clam chowder. I had a perfectly grilled chicken sandwich and pie. Pie oh my! They should offer a flight of pie. We were a group of 4, and sampled almost all varieties. The hickory pie was my favorite. But all were amazing. Whenever we are in the area visiting family, we enjoy breakfast at this restaurant. Service is always friendly and they serve a hearty and delicious breakfast. We love the (GIANT) pancakes, potato pancakes, waffles, eggs, bacon, homemade toasted bread... the list goes on. And try to save room for their homemade pie. My wife and I have been going down from St Paul MN, to bike the bike trail that goes right by the back of this restaurant, for more than 12 years. We always stop and have at least one breakfast; and later, at least one diner, at this restaurant. It is one of the major reasons we keep coming back to this area to bike. Their service is friendly, their food is great, and their prices are extremely reasonable. Sometimes, over the many years, it has gotten crowded, and then you might need to wait a little longer; because it is a small place, with usually only 2 waitresses, and only one or two cooks (depending upon the day). Their food and prices, more than make up for any delay we have ever experienced, here. The homemade pies are especially great, and we often get them to go! Their prime rib and fish fry that they have on many Friday nights, is also definitely worth going there for. I had seen this place while driving truck, so my gf decided to treat me to my Bday lunch there. What a waste of time. I had the clam chowder, it was the worst I`ve had. I could taste flour in it. The mushroom Swiss burger? I could hardly see any cheese, and there were few mushrooms on a tiny, WAY overcooked burger. The bun was huge and maybe homemade, however. The blueberry pie was good, but the wedge was maybe 3 bites!!! My gf had the stuffed pepper soup as an appetizer...right. There was no visible pepper, and scarcely a scrap of meat. She said it was like tomato sauce with rice. She ordered the Philly cheesesteak sandwich for her entrée. It was DRY and seriously lacking cheese. NEVER AGAIN. We went there on a Saturday at noon. There were 13 people there in addition to us. The young clueless waitress told my gf she didn`t have a spoon for her coffee, because they had a reunion coming in...which ended up being 6 people.
