Lovely little diner for lunch and pie. The soup on the day we ate was chicken noodle. All three of us enjoyed a hot cup. The grilled cheese sandwich wasn't anything special, but the grilled turkey & Swiss sandwich was delicious and huge! Neither of us that ordered the turkey & Swiss could eat the whole thing! Yay for leftovers. When eating at Borgens, diners are wise to try their homemade pies. Our table shared a slice of Sour Cream Raspberry pie. I describe it as a sweet custard pie with a layer of raspberry preserves topped with fluffy meringue. What's not to like? read more

This cafe is "so Midwest" as I told a colleague. I loved every bit of eating here, they were quite quick (despite busy-ness of a Friday lunch), the food was good, but their pastries and desserts were wonderful! I got a chocolate chip cappuccino muffin to go because my colleague had one with his meal, and I had to try it. I was NOT disappointed. Next time I'm getting a slice of pie and it feels like a rookie mistake that I didn't get one! read more

When you walk into a place at lunch time and it's empty, that should be a sign. When you're doing business literally right next door and you ask them for a recommendation for a lunch spot and they don't even mention the neighboring cafe, that should also be a sign. I stood there waiting to be seated with two employees discussing something over the cash register and ignored me. They turned out to be rude and short as well. The food is mediocre at best but it's pretty cheap. It may be that they knew I was not a local and don't take kindly to passersby, for some reason. A week and a half in Wisconsin and this is the first time I was treated poorly, so this place is the exception and not the rule. I recommend skipping this place and go have a burger at the bowling alley a mile down the road instead. read more

This is a small family owned old school restaurant. With seating in main restaurant and extra seating in back for privacy or large parties. Menu has traditional Norwegian and German recipes. For those looking for a twist, try the lefse breakfast. The fresh pies are a must try. Daily specials and AYCE soups and salad bar. Broiled fish is my go to with the home made soups on the salad bar. Friendly staff, clean restaurant, good food, tastes homemade! My husband ordered the sausage and biscuits. A different take with nicely seasoned sausage patties in fluffy, airy biscuits topped with gravy. I had the lefse with scrambled eggs and ham. It comes with hollandaise sauce which I ordered to be on the side; I'm glad I did so as I believe the flavor and crispness of the lefse would have been lost otherwise. The ham was a nicely smoked choice, cut to a very large and flavorful dice. We both ordered the hashbrowns extra crispy. They arrived slightly browned and almost in a solid thin patty form. My husband added salt and pepper, I did not. They were crispy yet not greasy. Service was friendly. I would recommend this restaurant. read more

Borgen's Café doesn't try to be something it's not. It's a small town Café with good solid home cooking, friendly service and great pie! We had the Meatball Sandwich and Roast Beef Sandwich Blue Plate Specials. They both came with a trip to a really good Salad Bar and the choice of a Dinner Roll or Lefse (a soft Norwegian Flatbread). The Roll was good, but the Lefse was great! The Meatballs were tender and savory in a great Brown Gravy. Diane loved her Roast Beef so much she only gave me a tiny taste. Both plates came with fluffy Mashed Potatoes and old School Carrot Coins. As good our meals were, the real reason to visit Borgen's is the Pie! As a matter of fact, while we were there, at least three tables came in just for Pie! We tried the Lemon Meringue and Coconut Cream. They were both fantastic! The Lemon was perfect. Great flavor without being to tart, like they can so often be. The Coconut Cream had a rich golden custard, loaded with flakes of Toasted Coconut. Both pies had a crust that stayed tender and flakey from the first bite to the last. All this being said, the star of both pies was a beautiful three inch high (at least) Meringue that was perfectly browned and light as air! They are Wheelchair accessible and service was great! Now that I live in the area, I have a feeling I will become a regular at Borgen's! read more

Terrible! Won't be back! The service was not only slow, it was poor. Waited 20 minutes for my meal. Food was mediocre, and over priced. The coffee was weak, you could see through the pot. The Restaurant/Gas Station down the street has much better service, coffee and prices. Lessoned learned!! Won't be back. read more

Well, the food was ok. My husband had country fried steak dinner and he liked it slit. It came with the soup n salad bar. I had the Philly French dip. The bun was one third soggy, and overall not very flavorful. But the soggy really got to me in a bad way. The waitress was very timid, like she was afraid to talk to us. She never came to refill my coffee, even though the empty cup sat on the edge if the table for her to see. The host/cashier was ok, but standoffish. Overall it was ok, but I was disappointed. Probably won't return anytime soon. read more

This is a wonderful spot for a traditional American breakfast. No fancy stuff. The service is fast and friendly. The pancakes and French toast were big--definitely not silver dollar! I have had so many compliments on our wedding dinner! I had people tell me the mashed potatoes and beef tips were the best they have ever had! They did an amazing job catering our raining wedding day! With lots of changes they worked quickly to make it work and we couldn't be happier with the way it all turned out! Way to go team! I had scrambled eggs in a lefsa wrap topped with a hollandaise sauce and my husband had a blacked chicken breast sandwich with blue cheese sauce and a chicken booyah soup. Everything was delicious! While staying in Westby I had nice breakfast at Borgen's. I ordered the Scrambled eggs with mushrooms and cheddar cheese served on a bed of hash browns. It was good and the coffee was as well. Seems there known for a pastry as a lot of people came in to have just that and coffee, by the time in asked for one they were out , my loss. The restaurant was nice and clean and I wouldn't hesitate to eat here again. I gave it a 3 star only because I've only ate here once and it was just breakfast. read more
