Well, as reviews go, this is one I never thought I'd write. But Drury St has turned a corner - it might actually know what it wants to be! - long may this continue!
Meeting a group of friends, nine of us in total, we needed somewhere close to the station that could accommodate us on a busy Friday night with no reservation. So, based on past experience of this massive bar and the low number of people who go here, we thought this seemed like a good place to meet and head off from there.
So, at first it was pretty quiet - well, quiet as in about 20 people spread across this cavernous venue - we got a table with sofas and comfy chairs and settled in for a few quiet drinks as everyone arrived.
Looking around, apart from the updated signage, on the surface nothing has really changed. So the walk in was just as we'd expected. Then we got to the bar.
Now, this place has been known to be expensive - or at the very least inconsistent with it's pricing (see Rob Ks review from January). So we ordered a couple of beers and a large glass of wine, expecting a call from the bank manager at any minute. But the drinks arrived and, to our massive surprise, so did change out of £10.
Our server at the bar was the friendliest member of bar staff I've met here (see Martin Rs review from the same January visit) she was efficient, helpful, cheerful, friendly.
When our group of friends arrived, some hadn't eaten, so they had a look over the menu. Simple bar food - burgers and mac and cheese, wraps and onions rings - nothing fancy. Orders were made and, from our seats in the corner, we could see the kitchen staff prepping and cooking because the kitchen is open to the bar. It smelled good.
When it arrived, everyone was pretty please with what they got and even a few plates were left unfinished - due to volume, not quality. This is what bar food should be: simple, uncomplicated, freshly made.
The bar started to get busy. And then the DJ began his set.
You know that way when you know a song and you're frantically scrabbling through your brain trying to remember which 80s/90s movie it came from? Well, this was how the rest of the night went. An eclectic mix that somehow managed to please a large room of people of different ages and tastes without being like a family wedding. Well done, that DJ!
So, what began as a starting venue, is where we stayed the full night.
We hadn't realised that Friday was a soft-launch of the rebranded Drury St - it was pretty low-key. I'm so please that, at last, it's found the confidence to stand on it's own two feet without hijacking the success of Brew Dog.
So, while I had a great night, I'll need to come back and check it out again - hopefully the spark it had on Friday will continue.
If it keeps this level of service, quality and experience, it's in good standing for a Five Star review *****
Well done, Drury St. Please keep this up! read more
