Our first restaurant visit in over a year, thanks to Covid. We wanted a place to meet with a friend…read morethat had outdoor seating, as we're still a bit nervous about being inside with others. However, the weather forecast was for rain! After a bit of head-scratching, we realised that Princes Square offered the perfect solution; we could sit 'outside' the restaurant but still be 'inside' the vast atrium of Princes Square and protected from the rain. Perfect! Sadly, we weren't allowed any alcohol as current restrictions prohibit drinking outside. I know, I know... we were still technically 'inside', but I wasn't prepared to argue the point. I'm not usually a huge fan of tapas eating - I prefer a more conventional starter/main course style of ordering, but with three of us we were able to order a good selection of dishes - their recommended three each - providing a good smorgasbord for us to choose from. The dishes were all very tasty, I particularly liked the Cocido de Judias Blancas (aka bean stew), and Patatas Bravas are always a favourite. I was a little disappointed with the Dorada a la Parilla (sea bass); given that it was one of the more expensive items on the menu, the portion size was a bit measly. It was, however, cooked just right. Clean plates all round and we were all satisfyingly full afterwards. Apart from a minor glitch on the drinks order - they forgot to bring one and I had to go and remind them - everything else was fine. So a thumbs up from us, and I'll happily return here in future.

Mussels in saffron was enjoyable and light while the chicken skewers were heavier and also delicious. Dessert was not wasted with a plate of churros though I probably would order something else next time just to diversify. Of all three types of sangria we had I would order the cava again. Sweet and light, it was easily the best choice.

Happened upon this accidentally and quite pleased I did…read more The fresh paint odour was at first a little strong, but we got used to it. A very friendly welcome from the staff, and the owner I assume, in his Spanish hat. I like an authentic feel to a restaurant and the mostly Spanish staff helped create that. No problems with the interior either, although the 80's Spanish music was a little off-putting at times. I've never heard the Damned's "Elouise" sang in quite that way before. The only menu available at the moment is the pre-theatre, but I had no problem with that, it had some of my favourite dishes on it, and two taps to choose from, San Miguel and Estrella, again I had no problem with that either. Between the two of us we had bread and olives, estofado (beef stew), albondigas (meatballs in tomato sauce), chicken wings in a beer and orange sauce, and chicken in a creamy pepper sauce. My partner had crema catalana to finish. Quick service and large portions, so far so good. The albondigas were pretty nice, tight and the sauce was seasoned just so. The beef in the estofado was lovely and soft as it should be, and the chicken in both dishes was cooked just right too, still moist and tasty. My only problem with it was that the stew and the chicken sauces were just a bit too thin and really had not impregnated the meat in any way. That was why I was so thankful for my large portion of albondigas sauce, I could use it for my beef and chicken too. Most people may have thought the sauces were rich and thick enough, it's my preference for lots of flavour perhaps, but there is my honest appraisal. Apparently the crema catalana was about the best my partner has had, there was certainly enough of it. It would have been nice if she'd known that her tea was herbal before she put milk in it though!

I had quite possibly one of the best takes on a fry up this morning, called the scone stack. It really is good. Potato scone, black pudding and square sausage. You have to see it to believe it. Also, the staff are friendly, even had a very eccentric person in this morning (not sure if he was the manager) seemed very upbeat and perhaps not gone to bed after the night out but very good humoured.

We'd booked in for dinner at 7.15pm on a Friday night and were seated by the door. There is outdoor seating (with leopard print throws for when it gets chilly, nice touch) which would be nice for a nice day. It got quite cold by the door after a while but thankfully a nice waiter offered to close it for us which was really appreciated. Our waitress was a little brisk but it seemed like she was run off her feet the whole night. The other staff we encountered were all friendly enough as well. Having a look over the menu I felt a little rushed to decide what to have but perhaps they wanted to turn our table over. The menu is a little odd, to be honest. Pasta dishes on a tapas menu? I just don't get it. There is also a selection of Brutti Bread Piccolo which I'm guessing is something like pinchos but never found out as the waitress didn't seem to have the time to answer questions. I avoided the section of the menu that baffled me and stuck with the more traditional tapas dishes: croquettes (cheese and bacon), pan catalan (tomato bread), peaceful prawns (butter and garlic prawns) and deep fried halloumi. Other dishes I tried thanks to my dining companions (Graeme H & Katie V) were chorizo, patatas bravas, albondigas and I'm sure there was also a squid/calamari dish that I can't see on the menu just now. The stand out delicious dish for me were the croquettes. Super crispy on the outside and really cheesy in the middle, these were really amazing. So much so, as I excited tucked into the last one I was proclaiming how much I loved them, only to find the last one was empty. Yes, just a shell of a croquette and no filling inside. It was hilarious/devastating. If they weren't so good, I probably wouldn't have said anything but seeing as I really wanted that last one, I told the waitress who got another portion bought over pretty quickly. I forgot to check the bill to see if we were charged for the extra portion. I hope not. Everything else was ok. The pan catalan was tasty, but perhaps needed more soaking time for the tomato into the bread (and to cover the whole piece of bread as well). The chorizo was crispy and almost a little burnt. The halloumi was really good, but nothing really outstanding in terms of being anything different. Dishes I wasn't impressed with: the peaceful prawns and the patatas bravas. The prawns were really bland tasting, I couldn't taste any garlic. The patatas bravas was more like a potato stew than crispy individual potatoes. And the albondigas was really hard, too hard for a meatball and it was pretty unpleasant to try to eat. The sauce was really nice though. When eating a tapas meal it can be easy to bypass the disappointing dishes, but now I've come to write the review there was quite a few things I didn't think were great. In terms of a cool place to go for a drink, I would definitely go here again. It's a nice space and had a really nice Friday night vibe. But I would hesitate about going here for tapas - although I would order those croquettes again, for sure! Edited to add: I would head to Brutti Ma Buoni rather than here as I found it much better overall! It's their sister restaurant, also in Merchant City.

A wee review update and still a very strong 5 stars from me!…read more Cubatas is definitely one of my favourite restaurants in Glasgow, I've now had countless meals here and enjoyed exceptional food and friendly, attentive service each time. We often take our little boy with us and they are so lovely to him, I order him a couple of dishes as soon as we arrive and these are brought out not long after we have him settled in his highchair and our drinks have arrived. It's brilliant as food keeps him occupied and we can relax and enjoy our food too. I force myself to order some dishes I haven't tried before - it's so easy to stick with the ones I have tried and I LOVE - and each time I discover another mouth watering dish. One of my new favourites is the pork cheek, melt in the mouth, jam packed full of flavour and so moreish. Added to some regular favourites such as the spicy prawns, paella, patatas bravas and their delicious salad dishes and you get a wonderfully varied meal. My top tip is to order a basket of bread for the table, the sauces and oils that accompany the dishes are divine and I love mopping them up with a chunk of soft fluffy bread. It's great going to Cubatas in a big group, with people who are happy sharing. My ideal would be to go and order one of everything off the menu, heaven :) These guys also do gift vouchers, I know as I bought my mum and dad some for Christmas. We've taken them for dinner here a few times and they love it!

Let's start with Bread which couldn't be any fresher. Roasted almonds and nachos. The nachos were different served up with BBQ rather than salsa, this might actually be a new thing for me. The great thing about tapas is that you can order everything and everyone just shares. Pataas Bravas, marrocon kebabs, fired cheese, chorizo in pastry..... Yes pastry! Prawns in garlic, fajitas, A pork dish, chicken with a batter and colorful sauce, meatballs and a massive paella, I'm sure there has been a few dishes I've missed. Feeling full yet? A tapas of deserts oh my goodness. A baileys cheese cake, check! Creme brûlée....check something that tastes of butterscotch. Tiramisu ooofffft! Some other spongy thing and a walnut cake. Man I've just re lived this experience....so good! Staff friendly and great food make this my perfect match!!

Drink wise, it was a full bar so anything you would like they had. Started off with 2 margaritas which was quite nice. And for starters, chicken katsu which you would never see on the menu at a traditional Mexican restaurant. It was quite nice, good crunch and nicely battered. For entrees, still odd but the katsu dinner served with rice in a sauce with scallions garnish. It was quite tasty to say. Also, the fajitas platter which was ok. Nothing major to rave about but it was good. It wasn't sizzling on a skillet how the states serves it. The way it was presented was meat on one tray, another tray had the sides of sauce of sour cream, salsa and guacamole. And the last was the tortillas. Portions of meat and grilled veggies were very skimpy. Other dishes that were ordered from our group was a taco platter which came as a build your own tacos. Three different meats, tortillas and the condiments. Even some of the starters had nothing to do with Mexican food. I guess you have to add traditional items at different restaurants to please everyone. Not saying I'm a connoisseur of Mexican food but having loads throughout Mexico and the states, it was just ok. I can say I finally tried it.

This is a lovely relaxing restaurant and I can't fault it, so glad I've finally tried a las iguanas and no doubt I will be back!

I came here with friends, after attending a film screening at GMAC (Glasgow Media Access Centre), across the road. Fortunately my friend had reserved a table for fifteen. We had three tables pushed together but it was high stools. It was quite tight and some folk couldn't use the stools, but we managed to get a normal chairs and table and we made it work. I unfortunately was driving. Boo!!! I know, right?! So I stuck with the soft drinks. Unfortunately their draft Pepsi was a bit watery but they had cans available. The cocktails looked amazing and some of my friends were really enjoying them. Definitely, next time!!! The band got themselves ready and then they had the place jumping. It already is quite a lively place, so don't come here looking for a quiet date night. The band played pop classics with a Brazilian twist. There was a small area for dancing. So this time, rather dodging it on the way out, I was one of those flang, flung persons, flinging themselves about the place. Remember, I was completely sober. Haha!! It was so much fun. Later on we had a male and a female dancer come out in full traditional Brazilian bling and feathers. It was brilliant to watch and we just joined in, dancing along with them. Overall it was a brilliant atmosphere, lively and a guaranteed fun night out. I do hope I get the chance to try the menu the next time.

Worst New Years 2023 experience ever. We didn't have any drugs on us and yet they falsely accused…read moreus, they body searched us, two people from Black, Asian, and minority ethnicity (BAME) , without have any substantial evidence. Due to our intersectional identities, we believe we were racially profiled and then searched during their Hogmanay Party- Latin Connection 2023. The body search was ineffective as we were two international students from two prominent university in Scotland and have nothing to hide. I guess we were taken aback as we did not expect to experience institutional racism and bias from a place like Boteco Glasgow. I was also touched inappropriately by the female security guard while searching .

Damn, this place is cool…read more Revolución de Cuba was one of many bars on my list that I needed to visit while I was in Glasgow. Located on the bustling Renfrew St. this place is hard to miss. The minute you walk in you feel like you're walking into a modern Latin American restaurant - sexy, dark, colourful are all the adjectives that are popping out at me. We came in on a Saturday night and it was busy, busy, busy. People were dancing, professional dancers were in full costume, every table was full, and all the guests looked happy taking down their fancy cocktails. The one downside of it being busy? It was hard to get a drink from the bartender. But once we got his attention, he was quick to serve. Our trip was short and sweet, since we had many other bars we wanted to visit this night. One drink and we were out of there. I would definitely come back for more drinks and dancing though. They also have a food menu that looked quite good, but unfortunately I didn't try anything. Good music, good vibes, good drinks. What more could you want?

The décor is okay, functional as much as interesting, there is a nice selection of spirits, especially rum, and I suspect that the tables can be cleared for salsa, gigs etc. The food and service though was slightly disappointing. Not that our server wasn't chatty or pleasant, the exact opposite in fact, it's just that the food took a while to arrive. Again, the menu is slightly disappointing too, there is very little on there that is specifically Cuban, in fact most of it would not be out of place in a Spanish tapas bar. I ordered albondigas (meatballs in tomato sauce), sticky chicken skewers, and the roasted chorizo. It took a while, when it did come though it was all tepid, it just wasn't warm enough, unlike my partner's, hers were all fine, but then again she didn't get the Gambas Pil Pil she wanted nor the tea at the end because it was taking too long! The roasted chorizo was great, a nice smooth chorizo with a really tasty red wine, honey and onion sauce. I also had some of my partner's Cajun cream mushrooms and they were creamy, spicy and properly warm. Nice large olives too. The meatballs were not bad, quite tasty, although I personally like them firmer, and the tomato sauce wasn't broken down enough, meaning it was separated and it certainly didn't coat well. The skewers weren't "sticky" enough, making them a little drier and the lime and honey flavour not as intense as it could have been. I'm sure it'll get better, these are no doubt just teething problems, but on the basis of this visit it's a three.
