I'm having a tough time with this review. Yaks used to be one of my favorite places. It's been a minute since I'd been there and I think the changes over the past few years have made it less good. I know they still have a loyal following and to get clear nothing was bad at all. But the loss of table service, no more complimentary sweet rolls, and still significant prices are difficult to reconcile. Also the Scott's tots taste different now, almost sweet and the burger was less flavorful than before. I hate to be one of those "back in the day..." but I can't help it. The interior decor is still excellent and fun, and the owners are the nicest people you'd ever meet. The names they hand out when you order are a fun touch too. read more

We were driving through town and I said I want to eat at the colorful corner spot! It looks cute and busy. I had no idea what we were going to get get. Outdoor patio is clean and shaded. You order at the counter and they give you fun name cards for your order. My favorite name they called was "giggles!" We were Godzilla. I went with the build your own and my husband went with the smiley. The meat was perfectly cooked, there homemade sauces were delicious and the garlic fires were good. Stumbled upon Yaks Shack on our most recent trip to Mt. Shasta and I was impressed with this small town hot spot. Offering both breakfast and lunch options, it's not hard to understand why visitors and townies alike flock to this locale. For such a small staff they are VERY efficient and food came out quickly, drinks even faster. By the time you find a spot on the outdoor patio your order will shortly be announced with amusing order titles they assign to you. With plenty of shaded seating you'll have no problem enjoying an iced beverage or smoothie during the summer time. "New American" cuisine gives this restaurant a misleading title because the menu expands several countries with its fusion options that are all appetizing. The portion sizes are hearty so come hungry and the prices won't crush your wallet. I tried the peachy paradise smoothie and ordered the boom boom mushroom breakfast burrito. Boom boom mushroom: (5/5) well balanced ingredients and perfectly cooked mushrooms wrapped in a grilled tortilla, after the first bite you're gonna be hooked on finishing this. Peachy paradise smoothie: (4/5) pretty good smoothie, hard to balance orange juice and yogurt but they did a good job at this. Not overly sweet or filling. Why only 2 stars is that today their chef wasn't not cooking for their meet well enough. The meat is not a prime steak so you can't serve it raw. My burger was charred on outside and raw in inside. It was pretty excited to try this place, had good reviews. I'm a PCT hiker who has a pretty low bar considering how hungry we are after hiking so many miles every day. One of the most mediocre burgers I've ever eaten. Pretty overcooked not juicy no flavor. I had the OG and even though it was docked up with a whole bunch of ingredients it was so underwhelming. I don't get the hype about this place. I got the jalapeño bacon burger. I'm not someone who cares about calories or nutrition when I'm out on a vacation but this place will just make you think before you put the burger in the mouth. The burger was filled with fried onions and fried jalapeños chips. It was impossible to eat, lacked any flavor and made me sick in my stomach. The chill-antro chicken sandwich was alright. Their famous garlic fries is just regular fries with raw garlic in them. It was disgusting. The tables were dirty and sticky. Super slow service. I had the fun guy burger which was super tasty and honestly stayed together pretty well. Usually when burgers are loaded with yummy toppings it falls apart, but this was solid. I only order the hazy ipa made by Mt Shasta Brewing but the place is very friendly. You order at the counter and pick up your order to the weird name they give you, like peter pan or santa claus or something like that lol. They also have a great patio area you where you can enjoy the view of Mt Shasta from with your dog. There were like 4 dogs in the patio area as we were drinking our beer. read more
