Five-Hundred miles from home, we got the tow-truck and the driver suggested A-1 Transmissions as the place to get help. We met Matt who immediately came across as wanting to help but also told us he was quite backed up. He said, however, that'd he'd try to get us a diagnosis as soon as possible. To our surprise, the diagnosis was completed in only a few hours. The part we needed (shift controller) would have to ordered, then programmed for our vehicle. We decided to rent a car and go home and wait. Matt kept to his estimated schedule for the repair and also, to-the-penny on his estimated cost. We drove the rental car back to Santa Fe to pick up our car, but after test driving Matt said that he was sorry but there was additional damage inside transmission that they had missed The controller was definitely bad, and the fluid inspection had indicated no internal problem ... but there was an internal mechanical failure. To be clear, I don't fault the shop for the diagnosis. Here's why ... as a former mechanic myself I would have made the same diagnosis. When it was discovered, the best course of action is just to replace the whole transmission. Matt put us in touch with a distributor in California and got us his very best price on a replacement transmission. Then, he let us order it directly ... no middle-man markup. Now, we had to return home and come back once the transmission was received and installed. Another thousand miles round trip and rental car. When the car was finished, Matt went a long way to help us out with the expense of the replacement and I felt as though he went way above and beyond in his customer service to us. It was a huge challenge to have a major transmission failure while on a road trip but I could not have asked for a more supportive shop than A-1. I also wanted to mention that I am very impressed by Matt's technical knowledge and obvious level of familiarity through experience. To summarize, we had a one-star kind of night with a broken car in a strange town and Matt turned that into a five-star experience with his shop. Everything about our situation was handled professionally and with utmost courtesy. He called us when he said he would, he always came to the phone to talk to me when I called him and he remembered us by name after two weeks' time gone by. The car came home 500 miles as our "test" drive. It worked flawlessly; actually it was better than the original transmission. So yes, I recommend Matt and A-1 should you need transmission work. I might go so far as to say go out of your way to use that shop.

Recently they did some brake work and gave me a list of things to fix &/or watch. There was one item, in particular, a leak in front axle, that needed repair (replacement). I decided to shop around. I called 2 other shops that I've used and are in town. This shop not only beat the price of the other 2 by over $100, they TRIPLED the warranty on the work! I've never been surprised by a bill. They tell me up front how much it will be and if they find something extra during the work, they call and discuss with me before they do anything. He looked over the list of "issues" and said none were bad enough to fix right now and we'd watch them. When I take it in for oil changes, they'll monitor them. And, on top of that, I've never seen SUCH NICE STAFF at a garage. Everyone I've worked with was smiling and friendly and EASY to work with. Working with them going forward is a no-brainer. The mechanic informed me that there was a leak coming from the transmission. He showed me exactly what was going on and they gave me a quote and said I could come back next week. I asked if I needed to top it off with transmission fluid in the mean time and the woman working the desk assured me " no absolutely not, you're good." They called me the day before my follow up scheduled appointment and told me all of a sudden the guy who does the transmission is no longer with them and they have to cancel the job. Heard this one before and I call BS! This left me in a bind so I went to a very credible shop in Taos and we discovered I had absolutely NO transmission fluid !! Not only did Amy and Annie do everything possible to get me in and out before my ETD, they were both warm and funny and authentically welcoming. Ari and his team are knowledgeable, skillful, and compassionate. While handling my tune up they found and resolved many issues for me, and alerted me to additional issues that might wait until after I return. Ari took the time to go over in detail, with both photos and drawings, everything that they discovered, and how they fixed the most pressing problems. They even popped my rear bumper back into shape where someone had caught the edge. Ari was keenly present and patient while reporting his findings. He answered all my questions and made helpful suggestions regarding what might be the next priortiy to address when I am ready. I walked away smiling, feeling like I received so much for a super reasonable final bill. I am beyond impressed. Little did i know that Ari thoroughly ripped me off. He initially told me via text that my bill for the work would be $1100 plus tax but when i arrived to collect my vehicle, the price was more: $1587.51 Ari explained that my van needed new software for the electric engine and of course Chryslar charged for the software but having called the dealership after, I learned that Chryslar didn't charge anything for new software, Ari charged me $495 for software and charged me for labor (an hour) which normally takes 15-20 seconds to upload. He told me that he had to replace the electrical harness to replace the broken hood latch switch. If I had the foresight to order the hood light switch on Amazon, it would have cost $35.00, Ari charged me $225.00 for this item. After paying for service, I noticed that even though supposedly doing a overall performance check, ($75) they didn't bother to air up one of my tires, leaving me in a lurch and having to get it done somewhere else. At the performance review, Ari explained the repairs still needed on my vehicle, these included two new tires, a tuneup, allignment, replacing the spark plugs and other maintenance stuff. Of course, Ari and his technicians could do all of these repairs. He said that spark plugs would cost $400. When I looked them up on Amazon, they were priced at $99.00. I won't take him up on his offer to do the work on my vehicle. Thank goodness, I didn't make another appointment with Ari! Don't read any of the positive reviews, they were written by owner Ari. If you notice, the positive reviews are only a paragraph in length, whereas the negative ones are longer to include all of the complaints. I noticed advertisements for Master Tech in our local newspaper. How many mechanics need to advertise their services? Only the ones that have alienated previous clients, only the ones that are beginning to see their over charging finally costing them their reputations. Santa Fe is a "word of mouth" town, Ari 's karma is finally catching up to him and unfortunately, to the rest of the technicians that work at his garage. I told my friend that he needs to find another job. Even though I had to pay through the teeth, and I felt like I had been scammed, the garage fixed my car. It really was a win/win.
