I'm from Louisiana and visited Mobile for a recent mini vacay. Visited Dreamland and the bbq was pretty good, staff were very friendly but what is up with the white bread and bbq? It felt sort of weird, think I would've appreciated it toasted and buttered instead. Needless to say, that went to waste. Ordered the bbq nachos for an appetizer and it was really good. The baked beans were my 5 y/o's favorite, his chicken nuggets were over cooked. My ribs were good but not like fall off the bone good. The chicken was pretty good, but that Mac n cheese was awful, tasted like it was right out of a box. I'd visit again for the nacho's. My friend had the smoke sausage and ribs, he stated his plate was good. Perhaps it's a Louisiana thing where we cook the sauce onto our meats!!! Also, get a Southern University "Jags" flag in there! 5 stars doesn't do Dreamland any justice. Great food, friendly staff and world class service. I've eaten at the Tuscaloosa location in the past and was happy to know there was a Mobile location not 5 minutes from my hotel. I have the ribs and chicken with beans and coleslaw. I decided to get in touch with my inner fat guy and add a smoked sausage to the meal but didn't have enough real estate in my stomach to finish it off. The chicken and ribs were awesome. I love real spare ribs with the tips left on and not those pansy St. Louis style that other places serve. The beans were good but damn, that coleslaw was great. I did get some of their banana pudding to go but I never got the chance to eat it. I have no doubt that it's just as incredible as I remember. Too bad I'm leaving early today because I would've gone there just for the pudding. Oh well, maybe next time. read more

BBQ is such a touchy subject for many. Of course there are certain sauces you prefer over others. No question Dreamland's is not very thick, it is a bit tangy and is heavy on vinegar. I do agree with Randy T, it's super for dipping that wonderbread in ;-) But on a plus side, Dreamland now is serving Baked Potatoes. Get that bad boy loaded up with some BBQ meat and all the rest of those fixings and it's a meal all unto itself!! I know some are reading this thinking "what is wrong with this gal" but trust me, if you haven't had a loaded baked tater with BBQ meat you just have to try it. I'm just not a major BBQ person so anytime the S.O. wants BBQ I know for the most part I'm going hungry. But now with this option at Dreamland I won't. EVERY time I'm in Mobile, this is a stop, for sure. Ribs are fall-off-the-bone. Pulled pork and brisket are fantastic. Sweet tea is nectar. The sauce? I loved the Big Daddy Nachos appetizer. You gotta try it. Homestyle potato chips, cole slaw, and your choice of meats ribs, chicken, or pulled pork. Or you can have all 3 of the meats if you'd like. (The Focus) Food and service (The story) So my mom and I were going to a masonic function here in Mobile and felt a little hungry. Me having snacked a portion on the way here was a bit full but could squeeze some "healthy" food in for the rest of the day. So we started looking around and all we could find where fast food places(I really don't eat fast food anymore after figuring out what goes into the food) and insisted that we go to a cheep eatery. She agreed since she is trying to eat healthy and we started looking for some good restaurants to eat at, 10 min later we couldn't find any that had any good reviews on yelp or good ones that where close to our location. Then I saw dreamland. Now back when we first moved to Alabama in 2004 we went to our local dreamland BBQ and had the most unpleasant eating experience of our life and haven't been back since. But that review will remain under raps so we don't digress from this review. So we were a bit hesitant at first, but soon gave in. We went in and saw a few people eating and sat our selfs down. Our waiter promptly came to us and asked us for a drinks. And after delivering our drinks he asked us for our choices. The service was really quick in this place and didn't smell like a burning building(last experience) but still had the nice smoking smell to give us a taste. We both ordered the pulled pork sandwich with the side which was delivered in about 7-10 min. So we ate in, my sandwich was ok but majority of it was the gristle but was ok. The flavor though was kind of non existent so I had to put some sauce on it, no biggy. My mom said that hers was absolutely the best as she got the ends(crunchy and delicious) and enjoyed the flavor. We then ordered the banana pudding for desert and it was delicious. We paid got out and enjoyed the meal. (Final Analysis) Good food for the price, convenient for the travels and way better than our last experience in Huntsville. read more

Stopped in late on a Fri night because we heard their ribs are awesome (it's a chain) and we were driving by and saw it. Wow. I'm so glad I didn't judge it based on the yelp rating. The sauce is sweet and smokey. The sides were fabulous. They start you out with sliced bread (like wonder bread) with their sauce for dipping. Yum! We bought a bottle of sauce to take. Sat at the bar so had great service. Waitress was friendly, down to earth, and helpful. It felt very real -- the kind of small restaurant/bar feeling, but a pretty decently-sized place. There was a big fire oven just visible in the kitchen where they cook the ribs. Smells great! The decor is fun -- lots of historical news clippings and posters. I enjoyed lunch at Dreamland while in Mobile on business. I loved the rustic southern barbecue joint environment, including the open pit. I had a two meat plate with pulled pork and smoked sausage. I ordered slaw for my side. Everything was delicious. A small disappointment was the sauce. It is served in small cups rather than in bottles available at the table. And it's a bit mild and thin for my particular taste. But the meal was still delicious. My son finished his meal with an order of banana pudding with whipped cream and declared it excellent. Of course, the food is amazing, but I was told that they dont begin your order until you walk in the door and once you get here, it takes 35-45 mins to complete it. I have been here 3 consecutive times and ordered over the phone with a 25 min wait to get here and sit for 45 mins. Ok I got to say guys.. Kudos to the presentation and the attention to details on your to go orders. It has been probably the best packaging I've seen. I got me to order some Ribs and Chicken.. Both were good I just hoped they could have had more seasoning however the bbq sauce was a good compliment to it I also ordered Mac and Cheese and the potato salad the Mac and cheese was on point and the potatoe salad was just good. And of course the Sweet Tea was just good I mean with are in the South we make damn good Iced Tea. Will recommend specially if you are in the mood for BBQ and of course I will go back the place since like a good spot to catch a game or have some beers and a good grub as well. Glad I have them another try. First time I got some of the sorriest ribs I've ever seen. There was no meat, they were tough, and tasted like they were grilled. It left me thinking this is how Big Daddy earned his reputation? Second time around they were much better. The ribs were pretty darn good. Not the best but not the worst. Now on to the sides y'all need to step your game up. The beans are bushes. Not even doctored. I mean you could at least choo up an onion or add a squirt of ketchup. Mac and cheese was meh. While Dreamland may be an institution in Alabama I've found their BBQ fair but better than what we have back on the MS Gulf Coast. Dreamlands BBQ sauce is North Carolina style very vinegary. While I really dont care to put their sauce on my meat it is great for dipping your bread in. read more

I enjoyed Father's Day with my toddler and hubby here. Pros Nice and hardworking servers. (The ones who helped us). Delicious sides and stellar sweet tea! Pulled pork was AWESOME. Great ambiance, large inside! The outside doesn't do it justice. Banana Pudding is a MUST to top it all off. So good! Get it even if it's just the $2 one! Cons Ribs were so-so. I was a little disappointed about that actually. It was somewhat dry. My hubby didn't have any issues with it. It was really dirty/messy on the floors etc. I'm sure it was because of the rush of Father's Day lunch. (We came for late lunch/early dinner). No one greeted us at the door/within a few minutes of walking in. My husband actually had to go up to the person at the bar (who btw clearly saw us come in and didn't say a word). This is customer service 101--I thought we were gonna have a horrible time there when no one said Hi or directed us (turns out it was self-seating. Have always wanted to try ribs from dreamland. Decided to stop in when I was passing through town. I eat a lot of ribs from a lot of places and wanted to see how these stacked up. Pros: Portions were a good size. Ordered 1/2 a rack and it was plenty. The to go order came in a box which made it easier to handle in the car. Server was nice. Cons: Ribs were tough and chewy. I understand that not everyone likes them falling off the bone, but these were massively under cooked. Probably needed another 30 minutes to an hour in the smoker. Flavor was ok. Not a lot of rub or smokiness. The sauce is tangy and while it's not my favorite I could see why people like it. Overall this place delivered on presentation but not on product. Middle of the pack by a nose! The good: The dreamland wings were excellent. Smoked over hickory then finished like traditional Buffalo wings. The hickory is a great added layer to the taste of the wings!! 5 stars for the wings. The fried okra was pretty tasty. Just a tad bit greasy but then again a little grease never killed anyone( at least not the same night lol) They put a sort of remoulade sauce drizzle on top which is a nice touch. Overall 4 stars! The bad: Here is where the problems started. If your name has BBQ in it then you should be excellent at BBQ. Sadly that isn't the case here. I ordered the rib tips. I was told by the staff that the ribs were not fall of the bone and had a slight pull. I turned and surveyed the diners to look at the rib eaters. If a slight pull in Alabama is forearms visibly flexing and pulling with enough force in the opposite way with your head that it causes a whiplash effect so be it!! I don't want to wrestle with my ribs therefore the tips. The tips themselves were extremely bland!! You don't need to over season meat but none? Really? There was no taste of the hickory like there was in the wings. They tasted like the tips had been thrown in the oven baked and drowned in BBQ sauce. Which brings me to the next problem. I will preface my comments by stating that I am not a big fan of vinegar based sauces. In saying that their sauce is just lacking!! I mean seriously you can buy better sauce in the grocery store!! I don't mean to sound harsh. The food wasn't disgusting but it was just edible. Edible BBQ at a BBQ restaurant is unacceptable in my opinion. I wanted to give them a 2.5 but that is not an option ( help me out Yelp!!! Lol) they were not as bad as a 2. Therefore they get a 3 by a hair! read more

Amazing flavors! Excellent service! My only complaint is that the ribs were VERY tough. I mean the flavors are on point, but I literally had to tear the meat off the bone. I would really like to try their ribs after being smoked for an extra two hours. The chicken was delicious, and Holy Crap that Banana Pudding is incredible!! Let me preface this review by stating that I'm from Washington state and they don't make food like this. We saw the sign as we were driving on the freeway and decided to stop. Great decision. There were seven of us for lunch service was prompt and our server was very nice. We all ordered different things but I tried almost all of it. Ribs were good. Pulled pork sandwich was amazing.
