Eh! The food is average at best. We had the wonton noodle soup (4 stars), walnut prawns (4), Mongolian beef (2), and the ABC chicken (1.5). Prawns and noodle soup were very good, the Mongolian beef and chicken were smothered in a sauce that was overwhelmingly saturated. We've been here numerous times over the years, but the food has gone downhill. Would we recommend it or go again, nah. Too many better options than Dragon Well. If you want "chicken nugget and fries" type of Chinese food give it a go, but otherwise go elsewhere. Not worth the hefty price for subpar food. Sorry! read more

We went on a Friday for a late lunch around 3. There were customers at 3 tables so not too busy. Food quality is still good and owner is always around to help out but something definitely was making him distracted. There was only one waiter and he had an almost too calming energy. He took his time in everything: sitting us down, bringing us the menus, cleaning the table, taking orders, etc. There were 4-5 guys in the kitchen so they got plenty of people to cook. It took them awhile to sit us and bring menus. Food arrived quickly but you could tell the owner was trying to train/help out other staff. Restaurant is decent, nice classic decor, food is consistent in quality. But the customer service part of the equation is not as good as before. read more

This is basically a 180 from my original Dragon Well review from 2024. I found my first visit pretty mediocre, but this time around it was a slam dunk, the Vegetarian Salad (basically a Chinese Chicken Salad with tofu instead of chicken) being delicious and filling. The tofu is very well prepared, fried enough to be crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside, but never greasy. The tofu itself is flavorful, not merely reliant on the dressing. The lemony dressing is light and tangy (although getting an extra helping to split with my partner was a smart move). Our server was friendly and the atmosphere was elegant but charmingly low key. It's a very nice reprieve from the hustle and bustle of Chestnut Street, to say nothing of its being a nice change of pace from the rampant fast-casual places in the Marina. The table service and nicely appointed dining room are an elevated experience in a neighborhood dead set on takeout operations with low overhead. My only suggestion would be that they change the salad ratios to lessen the need for more dressing; this could be done by simply removing some of the iceberg lettuce, of which there is a lot. Then the original amount of dressing would be perfect. Pro move: ask for some of their hot mustard and give your salad a delightful kick. We will be back... a lot. read more

The food was pretty good, I enjoyed the curry noodles and thought the flavor was really good. The Mongolian beef was also pretty good although it didn't come with rice (we had to order it separately). Overall the food was good but didn't wow me, and the prices seem a bit high for just okay flavors. I would potentially return to try some different dishes. read more

We loved it so much we ate here two days in a row and ordered the same thing. The food was delicious and largest enough to share family style if you want but I liked is so much the second time we ordered the full size for each of us individually. It is fresh and tasty without being overly heavy. The service was friendly and efficient and we thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The Hong Kong Noodles with crispy noodle were so so good. Was walking down chestnut with a friend to get some sweets from susie's. We got hungry and walked past this place that had a sign outside with their small plate menu items. That alone got me excited to see the rest of the menu which looked appealing. My friend and I walked in and were greeted by the host/server. They had a few tables open and got seated right away. The place inside is small but cozy and clean. The food came out and tasted delicious. We took the rest home and ate it for a midnight snack. Would come back for the other items for sure! read more

Dragon Well is a pleasantly small restaurant, tucked away on Chestnut Street. It fit in so well with the surroundings, that I almost walked right past it. To begin, my host was very friendly and offered to assist with anything on the menu. I was quickly brought a glass of water with a lemon wedge added for flavor, while I waited for the arrival of my entrée. I had ordered the Mongolian beef from what I was told was the lunch menu. It arrived quicker than I thought. However, no compromises were made in the quality of the food or the preparation and presentation. Right out of the gate, I knew there was something special about this dish. It was full of subtle flavor and just a slight hint of spiciness. While the flavors were subtle, they were also very complementary of each other and served to make a very good meal. I was looking for something very authentic, vs. something that's been over processed and I believe I found it at Dragon Well! We were out furniture shopping nearby. Since there were so many lunch options and we had 90 minutes left on the meter we walked through a couple of blocks and eventually picked Dragon Well. It seems not a lot of folks eat in during a tuesday lunch, but they have a fierce take-out thing going on. We ordered: Ma Po Tofu $22: 4*. It was very tasty, although more sauce than I like. The tofu was beautiful and silky. Flavor balance was just right. There could have been more pork, especially at that price. Salt and Pepper Calamari $23: 3.5*. Also very good, but adding the fried noodles seemed like a ploy to make the portion seem larger. I asked for low heat level, and they were perfect on that. Some pieces were just too heavy on the salt. The bathroom was very clean and I appreciate that. Overall it was a good experience with two knocks - Food was slow to come out, especially with the low crowd. Prices were way out of line with comparable Chinese restaurants. Dragon Well is my family and I's favorite restaurant! The food, service, and atmosphere are fabulous and we have never had a bad experience. Some of our favorites are the Black Bean chicken, popsticks, Chow Fun, and Wonton Noodle soup (best meal to have if you aren't feeling well.) We have consistently been going for the last 15 years and one of our favorite things to do when we travel to SF. Our home base is LA and been to a lot of great restaurants, but nothing beats Dragon Well :) 6/5 stars!! read more

The family wanted Chinese food since we were visiting San Francisco for the weekend on August 6th to celebrate my dads birthday. My mom found this place that was walkable and near by. My dad and I walked on by and put in our order for a bunch of food. They got 2 orders of fried rice, a couple meat dishes, vegetables and chow mein and additional white rice which I never understood why my family gets so much rice as a lot of it goes to waste anyways. I really don't eat a lot of rice due to my lifestyle and really don't eat a lot of Chinese food. Anywho, we were greeted by a lovely lady who took our order. It was empty inside except with one party of 4ish dining in and they also had outdoor seating. It appear to be very lively! There was going to be a short wait so dad and I decided to go to Walgreens and pick up some stuff while we waited and dropped it off at the hotel. Since it was my dads bday weekend I made my older sister come with me and my uncle decided to come along for the walk so my dad could rest. We already paid for the order but they seriously tripple checked -_- Which was annoying. We had a different helper. We waited about 5 min for them to confirm we paid. Which was my only negative experience here. Finally she found the note or whatever and we were on our way back walking to the hotel. The nieces were hungry, parents, older sister and uncle. I really wasn't hungry or feeling Chinese food but my mom made me eat as I really didn't eat much that day. I wanted ice cream xD Anywho, I sampled a little of everything and I really loved how light and fresh the fried rice was as it was not greasy at all. The chicken chow mein was tasty and not overly salty. The chicken mushroom vegetables were my favorite. I LOVE a lot of vegetables with little chicken so that one was favorite. The Gyozas were my least favorite...to me and my family they were seriously too big and stuffed with way too much meat which no one really went back for seconds . I couldn't and didn't finish mine. The nieces loved the noodles and went back for second and thirds even on the broccoli and chicken! I couldn't be a such proud auntie that my nieces love broccoli. I barely started eating around my late twenties - so I'm over and beyond impressed. It was always something about those little trees!!! Overall, the food was good and tasty and filled everyones belly up. There was plenty of left overs and just as I thought no one ate the white rice xD I would recommend this place. We ordered - green beans - ABC chicken - Mongolian beef - curry mi fun noodles - Chinese chicken salad Super happy with all the food we got. Thought the Mongolian beef was the least interesting but it went well with the noodle dish. The salad is a very generous portion. The menu says lemon-soy vinaigrette but it tasted more like a wasabi dressing. I would have ordered the chow fun noodles but the photo of the GF version online looks like there's no sauce?? We absolutely love Dragon Well and go often. My GF doesn't even eat red meat but she loves the Mongolian Beef here so we get it every time. The Won Ton and Pot Stickers are both excellent too. We ordered in delivery tonight and decided to try Dragon Well. The crab rangoon were won ton style, which I prefer to the empanadas style. They arrived delicious and hot, with an unusual sweet and sour sauce (pineapple maybe). The small size won ton soup was fresh but basic and lacking much flavor. The Mongolian beef was tender and had a unique flavor, perhaps it had wine in the sauce, though it was very onion heavy. With rice and fortune cookies, dinner was very expensive. I'd give Dragon Well 3.75 stars but everything was packaged so nicely, arrived hot and they had good napkins, so I give them 4 stars. read more

Dragon Well is in the middle of the main stretch of the Marina. The venue is very clean and the staff have obviously been well-trained as my server repeatedly checked up on me to be sure all was going well. As I left the hostess also checked up to be sure that my meal was a success. And the bathroom was sparkling clean. I ordered two courses: Mu Shu Pork came with four obviously house made pancakes and was devoid of the puddle of oil that usually is found at the bottom such food. I liked that there was ample pork and some egg and mushroom in the ample and very hot plate of food. The one thing missing was that smokey taste that comes from the best prepared food made in a Wok. Next was Mongolian beef that again had a very ample portion of quite tender beef as well as scallions. Most surprising was that this plate actually was spicy, even a bit more so than I would have desired. You would probably differ with me about the spice level. All in all a nice meal in a nice place with nice service on a nice day. read more
