If you have another option you should take it. I don't live near by so I called to check hours and range rules before making the trip. When I arrived, the store was closed with a small sign on the door posting their "new" hours. I understand the website hours being wrong, but their automated phone system has the wrong hours too. This was frustrating and I missed out on a large part of my day. The real kicker is that when they did open, the person at the desk told me I couldn't use the range. All the things the person on the phone had told me were wrong and their was nothing he could do about it. Total waste of time. Don't repeat my mistake. Down Range is the best range in Chico. Down Range provides a clean and spacious area to shoot. It's pricey, but worth it. NO AC! No water allowed inside. Come in the early morning or it will smell like BO. My biggest complaint is the staff. They've had extremely rude staff in the past, but it seems that they have hired some great new people! Female staff is friendly, male staff is rude. Ive had to wait 20 mins just to swap out a rental gun or ask for new ear protection; a simple task that takes 5 seconds. The staff sees me, but refuses to acknowledge my presence because they are trying to sell a gun. Staff also doesn't like it if you don't own your own gun and keep using rentals on a regular basis. They will make this known. On another occasion, a staff member let two non-members in without their ID and said he "trusts them". This made me uncomfortable, so I left. A few weeks ago, one of their staff members was helping customers while he had an erection. It's natural, but makes my female friends uncomfortable. Like I said, new staff members seem friendly, safe, and accommodating. You get the occasional creep, like any range. It's mostly guys talking to their targets as if they were real humans. I'm not sure if the staff pays attention to the camera feeds. Overall, it's a good place to shoot, just ignore the staff and bring some water. read more

Great ranges, very clean and have a nice viewing area. They allow up to 3 rounds of controlled "rapid fire" which is seemingly rare for ranges. Staff is friendly and generally gives respect where it's deserved. Storefront is well lit and stocked, maybe a bit pricey. My one complaint of the day(and what made this a 4 star review) was GETTING MUZZLE SWEPT 3X by an EMPLOYEE showing off a rental gun to a customer when I was standing only a couple feet away. I came to Down Range for my first time today to start practicing archery. I'm completely new to the whole experience. The staff was really nice and showed me how to use the compound bow they were setting me up with. And told me I could ask them any questions during my time there. It definitely made me feel less intimated about trying it out since I've never taken lessons. I just wanted to get an idea about archery to know if it's a hobby I wanted to get serious about. The only thing that somewhat ruined my first experience was the other individuals in the range. They were obviously more experienced and could tell I was an amateur. Making comments and being rude even though I wasn't intentionally trying to bother them. I came here because I thought it was a more family oriented area instead of a more serious atmosphere. Maybe I just came on a bad day, but It was a little nerve wrecking as a first timer. I will definitely come again to try to practice more. read more

Been a member here since they opened, I enjoy shooting at the range, and the staff are friendly and very knowledgeable. I have also shot an AR made out of an 80% receiver (home made AR whatever you want to call it) and did not have any issues, they take a look at all the guns you bring in, and find that fair. If you like archery they also have an archery range. You can't go wrong coming to this place!! read more

Down Range is great. I went there for my bachelor party to do the archery tag. We had a blast! It's the best workout you can get because you're running all over crouching down and trying to dodge arrows flying by your face. (They have foam tips, so no one gets hurt). We played on teams, just like what you'd expect if you ever saw a paintball competition, there's stuff to hide behind, and run around. And since it was my bachelor party, everyone wanted to be on the other team so they could shoot at me... It was an awesome time. A word of warning though, if you're new to archery, the string from the bow will drag across the inside of your bicep and forearm when you shoot, so you'll end up with a bruise on your arm the next day if you aren't careful. They have little sleeves for you if you want to avoid the bruise, but we're supposed to be tough guys so we didn't use them... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ read more

I have never a problem with the gun sales side but the uniform side is not good. I ordered a vest carrier months ago it was supposed to be here weeks ago and no luck. I have called multiple times hard to get anyone to answer when I finally did I was told it is delayed for months. The part that upsets me is that the never reached out to let me know it was delayed. I bought it for my sons birthday and graduations for the academy and find out the day before his birthday that it wasn't in and wasn't coming in. This is the same problems we had before Down Range bought the uniform store. It's time for someone that has good customer service to open a uniform store in northern CA. read more

As of the beginning of March I'm new to shooting, other than shooting friend's guns once every several years. I've been to just one other gun range and the staff were very nice and helpful. I heard about Down Range soon after and tried it out. I was very impressed with a very clean and well supplied gun range like nothing I had imagined; and with Archery and Paintball like setup. I was impressed with the two gun ranges with a total of twelve isles that are well ventilated with blowers to eleminate lead and gunpowder out of the building. And gun safety is always paramount. I've found the staff to be very helpful and the classes they offer are fantastic. Each of the staff are very willing to answer questions you have and connect you with the right people to help. My greatest concern about going into a gun range, especially a big one like this was that there would be a bunch of gun toting "Red Necks" the negative side of that term, and listening to a lot of high minded, better than thou, negative type of attitudes and language. Instead I found everyday kind people of all walks of life who enjoy shooting guns in a safe inviroment who want to learn to use guns wisely and safelyand how to use these guns for fun sport and personal protection and how to use a gun as a last resort. I've seen whole families there checking things out and shooting for the first time. You can also tell a lot about a place from their restrooms. These at Down Range are kept very clean. There are also tables and chairs available. Since being at Down Range I'm far more skilled with fire arms in a short time than I ever thought I'd be. I'm no longer afraid of guns but have grown in my respect for guns and gun owners. I have never had a good experience here. Gunsmithing is overpriced and unreliable. Their prices are ridiculous, and the staff doesn't care about you unless you're going to buy a gun. If you have a child under 12, make sure you don't try to take them, unless you want to pay for a $60 kids training course. I've shopped at down range for years primarily because they're one of the only shops with a good stock of firearms. However, every time I walk in the employees act like pompus A-holes who give off "I'm better than you and I know it" vibe. For the most part I just brush it off but this past month they've only gotten worse. Today I went in to check what pistols were in stock and had the displeasure of dealing with Mark. He was very condescending, kept trying to up sell me on a firearm even after I expressed multiply times I didn't want it, and was barely paying attention to what I was saying. I came in looking to buy but after my experience I went to sportsman's and bought a new pistol from there. Even when buying my beretta 1301 a couple weeks ago they treated me less than optimal and the employee could not stop putting his hand on his sidearm. I honestly can't think of a single time where I walked out of that store thinking "I'll recommend this place to a friend". On top of that I am not a fan of the fact that you have to give them your drivers license for every transaction. They have the absolute worst return policy I have ever heard of. If you purchase something over $70, pay cash, and then go to return it, all they will offer you is store credit or a check if you push for it. I've bought close to 10k in firearms from down range in the past 4 years and after these recent experiences they couldn't pay me to get my business back. read more

I like everything about down range except for the long wait time which happens every single time. They are grossly understaffed and sales people are not that friendly or informative. I tried to go again. Guy did not really help show us how to shoot the gun we rented. I decided to buy a smith & wesson 9mm hand gun and the customer service I received was excellent both times I went. I had to take a little test and the guy helped explain the process which was great. After the 10 day wait period the second guy that helped me was equally as helpful as the first. Because of my not so great first time there and the way we weren't really helped as far as getting familiar with the gun we rented I removed a star. The staff were very friendly & the waiting area outside the range with vending machines (for family to wait if they aren't there to shoot) was a nice addition to a range. So check this out...Down Range had a one year anniversary party I bought a small gun safe for a pistol. It was slightly too big where I wanted to put it so I took it back. Down range charged me a 50% restocking fee. The original cost was one hundred and ninety five dollars they credited me $95 back. The receipt says 50% restock fee on firearms. The clerk insisted everything was 50 percent restock fee. Let this be a lesson to anyone purchasing at Down Range. Make sure what you are purchasing will work for the application intended. I understand that employees should practice good customer service for their patrons, but their customer service can be very awkward at times. If I am just browsing around the store for only a couple of minutes, then the employees tend to bother me a bit too much as if they think I am not going to buy their products. I am thinking on what to buy, and they tend to bother me if I think for too long on making a decision. Went with my brother one time, and this was his first time here. We weren't there to shoot any rifles at their indoor range, but they also sell parts and products on the shelf. One of the employee that was willing to help us seemed a bit on edge with us at the same time because we were looking for more than one gun part that they sell for an AR15. We ended up buying at least five or six products. You can tell that they feel like they're forced to help customers, while keeping a low key, straight face while helping, which makes it awkward. Also another incident happened awhile back from a lady employee who claimed that she can help diagnose the issue with my rifle. I wasn't going to take this rifle to shoot at the range, nor did I bought this rifle from them. I told her I needed a gunsmith to help me take down the bolt extractor, but she said she could happily help me instead. Once I showed her the issue, and explained to her for a good thirty seconds, she literally told me that she couldn't help me. She had to get one of the male employee to help me. The guy couldn't help me either because he wasn't familiar with this rifle I had. I didn't know at the time that the gunsmith usually leaves around 4pm during this incident, which I came around 5pm. Then the guy told me to just wait for tomorrow to talk to the gunsmith because he left for the day. It shouldn't have to be that hard for them to just tell me that. read more

Ok so my wife bought me my lower and upper from them and all parts needed to put my ar together. She did buy me a complete upper so I had mother to do with putting the upper together. I put this together on Christmas Day in 2016. So my family decided to go out and shoot my ar was jamming every other shoot so I took it back to them and asked to look at the gun I paid to have the gun smith look at the gun said everything looked ok and I was probably shooting cheap ammo. I then went and bought better ammo they told me to get and went out to shoot again. Still same thing. Took the gun back again gunsmith said my jam nut was a little lose should be all good to go. Went out to shoot again and still jammed. So I was telling my guys at work about this and one of my friends builds ars so I brought it for him to look at it with in two min he sees that the feed ramps are all off and that that might be the problem. So I took it back t down range and they said owe (we didn't see that) well what where u looking at then is what I was thinking. So then they had to contact the builder which is cvc and get them to pay for it to be shipped back to them to be looked at. That took 2 weeks then they have my upper for 2 months. I got my upper back and by this time was back at work and doing sports with the kids so no free time to go shoot. So know as of 2 days ago we go out to shoot thinking I have a gun that is all set to go. Guess what it Jammed again either every shot or would shoot to then jam and jam. So I called down range and ask them if they can give me a new upper or even my money back either way I'm just tired of not being able to shoot this gun. They say it's the builders problem to make it right. My thing is I didn't buy it from the builder I bought it from down range. Know we are weight for a phone call tomorrow to see if they are going to make this right or give me the run around. I hope they make it right and either give me my money or a new upper. Great place for kids! We took our church group of kids (ages 8-10) in for an all day archery class. I figured the kids would be tired by the end of they day but they had a blast and ask me all the time when we can go back. Down range customized a class that would fit our needs and also was able to assist with handicapped access. Down Range gets it. I used to shoot at the public range in Oroville, but I found it crowded, dirty, and most of all, unsafe at times. When Down Range opened I did not initially go in to shoot but waited until I got tired of NOT shooting because I hated the idea of going to Oroville at 7am and hoping it wasn't full. When I walked into Down Range I was greeted warmly and asked how they could help. I rented a lane for an hour, and after my hour they told me about their membership. I signed up for a recurring bill that is a fantastic deal if you shoot 1 time a month or more. I now shoot regularly and can tell you this about Down Range: They are professional: The owners run a tight ship and they are exceedingly friendly. I had a question for them that I sent through email and Steve, one of the owners, wrote back to me with an answer nearly immediately. I would continue to patronize their facility on this alone! They are knowledgeable: They have employees that are gun nuts, veterans, police officers new to the area, younger folks looking to get into law enforcement, older folks keen to teach classes and impart wisdom, and women (a woman is one of the managers). They all have different opinions on guns, and that is GREAT. No one likes going to a gun store where everyone in the store says "you should only buy a Glock". They are keen to give back to the community: I went in to shoot recently while the horrible wildfires were ravaging Redding to the North, and overheard one of the employees telling the other employees that Steve had just gotten off of his shift at Chico PD, and was napping for a few hours before heading to Redding for ANOTHER full shift to help people there as a police officer. Who pulls double shifts in one day? That guy. I personally thanked him at a later date and still feel thanks is not enough. They are inclusive: They have classes specifically for women so they can become comfortable with guns without leering men or the discomfort of having a guy try to "help them out with that". I will continue giving my business to Down Range and encouraging others to do the same. They are fantastic. read more

A few things everyone should know before getting a membership...If you do not anticipate using their range frequently or buying a bunch of their expensive ammo, DO NOT GET A MEMBERSHIP! After 6 months of being a member and several hundred dollars spent on ammunition alone, I was ready to end my membership. However... canceling your membership before 12 months will cost you 150 bucks, for some reason. And when you do want to quit, make sure you give them a 30 day notice, because you will be charged for another month after being forced to submit a "formal" cancellation notice. These conditions were not explained when I spent over $1000 for a firearm and membership, plus another $1000 on ammo. Down Range is money hungry and doesn't care about their customers, just the hard earned dollars they spend read more

I went in on the the 6th of November and paid to use the range they told me lane 8. So when I went in someone was already using that lane, no biggie untel I had to wait another 15 minutes because someone that came in after me got the next lane. Still not that big of a big deal. After that they gave number 9 since no one was using it that whole time........ because the lane was broke even after I let an employee know they acted like it was no big deal. She said a lot of lanes were broke. If thats the case have them fixed before having someone pay twenty dollars for getting to use something that cant go out more then ten yards. It went great trying to get my rifle sighted in...... I was a member there first year it was open. Im not going back for a while! read more

Went here today for the first time and ended up signing up for their membership. The staff was super helpful and one of the guys on staff helped me out with my AR jamming as I just bought it am not very experienced with the platform. The range is well kept and hearing protection is provided for free which is a definite bonus. The shop is nice and all the staff seem rather knowledgeable which can actually be surprising in this town as some of the other staff at different ranges are rude and not very knowledgeable (not gonna name any names there!). Overall, I definitely recommend coming here and I will probably be signing up for some of their lessons too as they seem to have rather competitive prices for that as well. read more
