Would never recommend coming here, I needed my heads adjusted and carb retuned and was charged 800$ for that lousy job, I say that because they did a terrible job rewiring car when put together ! As seen in the photo they didn't wire my plug wires correctly and they melted on the exhaust manifold and caused us to break down half was home. I had to drive back with another car and they still had to nerve to try to charge me for plug wires until I demanded for a wire for their mistake. Something's changed; something bad. I've been going to Doug's for twenty years with my 65 beetle. I've had a lot of work done that I was very happy with the work and the people were great--helpful, smart, honest. This trip will be the last. What a mess. My VW is garaged, I run it ever month or so. I have it serviced once a year, but covid messed that up. It had been a few years and I scheduled a simple service. Date arrived, dropped it off and the counter person asked what I needed (tune up, oil change, check overall condition, new headliner, check air/heat controllers (loose)). Heard NOTHING for six days (I was traveling, so it worked, but still...). Called, they asked for an email address which was provided. Nothing for two days. Stopped by, chatted with counter guy--he rotated the screen (I could see the correct email address on the screen (which they did not use). They had a truly impressive list of baloney on this screen: complete rebuild of transmission because of oil leaks and loose gearshift action; complete rebuild of engine due to oil leaks and 'excessive endplay'; new brake system because of low brake fluid and multiple electrical issues. I only know the list because they finally sent me something TWO DAYS later. $17,000 for a tune up on a 58 year-old vehicle that is worth about $13,000. I emailed back that they are not authorized to do any work on the vehicle and picked it up later that day. When I went in to pick it up, there was a real 'tell' in that they did not even ask why I did not want the work done. An action consistent with true scam artist. I was just a mark. They didn't care at all about the car or the customer. read more

I had my dad's street Baja worked on here. Spent close to 20k with them. New motor, interior, new rebuilt trans. I was very excited about getting it done, thinking it would be done professionally. not the case. I am so disappointed with the work they have done. I told them I wanted it road worthy, safe to drive. It was about the sketchiest drive home. They said they test drove it and everything was fine. Not the case. They replaced a bearing on my steering column and hammered it back on, ruining my steering box to the point I could barley drive it. I cannot even remove the nut for the steering wheel because the threads are damaged from hammering on it. They put in rear seat belts and drilled into my nose cone on a brand new rebuilt trans. They put in a rear seat that I bought from them that doesn't even fit the year of my bug, ruining the new rear panels of the new interior they just installed. The interior looks like a 5 year old installed it. The carpet kit was installed with out the sound proofing that I paid for. The list goes on. Trans boots leaked. My exhaust came off the Jay tubes because it wasn't tight When I drove it home. I didn't want to take it back to them because I was afraid of them ruining something else and the fact they they had it 6 months longer then they said they would have it back to me. Fish is a nice guy, but has a silver tongue and does not live up to what he says. read more

They overcharge for incomplete work. We paid over $2000 for a service to be done to our shop bus and we still had the same issues. Since Doug's is very far we went to a closer shop that has been around for decades, and before he even knew we had taken it to Doug's, he basically reiterated the same issues that we had paid to get fixed at Doug's! We showed him the receipt and he was astonished that they had not told us about all the other very severe issues that the bus had. I am new to the VW community and finding a place to do service was a bit challenging. I guess you just gotta get to know people. Then I found DB&B. The customer service seems average to good, and they seemed knowledgeable. I took my block in to have them take a look at it. Basically they told me it was junk and tried to sell me a rebuilt one. It wasn't in my budget, so I decided to find other options. That's also when I was told how much to tear apart my long block was ($200). I was a little shocked at the price, but I guess it's my fault for not asking up front. But my experience wasn't what I expected, and got the feeling that they were just trying to upsell me. Overall I gave them 3 stars for a clean shop and average customer service. read more

This may be my only bad review I have ever written. THEY ARE SCAMMERS AND SCUM This shop will overcharge and bullshit you for garbage help. I took my DAILY DRIVER bus in to get checked out. They did an inspection and found nothing major wrong. They recommended fixing bushings and adding a breather box so oil doesn't spray out when going fast in the highway for my Cali trip I mentioned to them I wanted to take it on. They promised they would get it done for me before then... which they didn't. I took the advice but when I picked up my bus I could not shift into first or second gear (because the new shifter had a trigger to pull in to go into reverse) except they put it in wrong and it engaged after leaving 2nd. Also my bus which I drove every day immediately sprayed out oil all over the engine. I immediately Took it back in and they ran some tests and told me It was a still a heathy tight engine but they thought it was because the dipstick seal. But it seemed fine and would be ok with the new dipstick seal. I didn't get 5 miles before my engine bellowed out white smoke and the back of my bus was covered in oil. I pulled over and it didn't start. I waited for an hr got it started and emailed Mike one of the employees in fb (he added me so he can show me the bus bras his wife makes). He replied back and was nice about it and told me "they would fix their mistake" I took it back in and again they said I needed an only change? Still didn't work... Then they wanted to charge me for all 3 of my visits and charge me again for messing up my engine. When talking to Fish the owner he said I can't guarantee your bus is going to run forever when it leaves my shop (I MADE IT 5 MILES!!) he also told me I was a FB STALKER because I'm hitting up his employees after hours (I picked it up at close so I couldn't call the shop and wanted them to know it happened right away) and he wouldn't fix my bus. The owner is a scumbag and the shop shouldn't be trusted. Last year, my wife decided that she wanted to learn how to work on cars, and bought herself a '73 Super Beetle. We drove it home from the seller, 50 miles, and she drove it back and forth to work for a few days after. Everything was fine, but she decided that she wanted to have it looked over by a specialist, for piece of mind, since she's never owned one, and neither have I. She took it to Doug's to have them go over it, tune it up, and make a list of things to consider repairing based on priority. Three days later, they call to tell her that her motor is shot, and she needs a new one--a $5000 proposition. Having owned and worked on several vintage cars and motorcycles myself, I gave them a call to discuss why she needed a new motor. The story I was given--from a salesman, not a mechanic--was that they test drove the car and the engine had poor power, so they did a leakdown test, and found that the valves were leaking. "Did you adjust the valves or do any other tuning up?" No. We tightened the heads and did a leakdown test, and this is what the tech said we needed to do. "Why don't you lap the valves, adjust them and retest it?" We won't do that because we don't know the condition of the bottom end of the engine and don't want to risk being held liable if something happens after we do that. We need to rebuild or replace it so we can be confident about the condition of the engine before we do any more work. Re-read that last part. These guys clearly need to hire competent mechanics. I took the car home and did my own investigating. Turns out all the valves were too tight, the timing was too retarded, and the carburetor was incorrectly tuned. An hour and a half of work was all I needed to spend on it, and the car ran like a top. I even had another mechanic friend of mine, who has owned a bunch of these, test drive it and he said it ran exactly like it should. It's been six months since then, and regular valve adjustments and oil changes have been all the car has needed. It does 60mph without flinching, starts right up every time, never knocks or stalls, barely consumes any oil, and a compression test shows an average of 115psi across the board. ... Doug's always does a great job tuning and repairing my VW. I have dual carbs on a racing engine and those are tricky but every time I get it done by them it sounds perfect. The one time I didn't take it to Doug's I regretted it. Even if it is a bit of a drive for you, trust me, it is worth. I never leave feeling over charged or taken advantage like I have at other shops. Fish is great to talk to and Mike is always super direct on what they did. Doug's is awesome. The staff is friendly and helpful. They will do whatever necessary to help people out, and are honest about what your vehicle needs and the timeframe needed to do it. Their mechanics are some of the most experienced with air-cooled VW's in the city. I have seven VWs, some air-cooled, some water-cooled. Brought the car in for a tune up to pass emissions, they charged me $180 for basic tune up stuff. Not only that they broke a key off in the engine bay lock and charged me to replace the key. On top of that the lost the horn button that goes on the middle of the steering wheel. No idea why they took it off in the first place. After weeks of arguing with them they finally agreed to replace it and the lock. After shoving the parts in my face after my third visit, they yelled "eat a dick and never come back". read more
