    After calling as asked, stopping by in person, and sending two emails, I got a call back. The wait, and my overall experience, was apologized for and compensated. I was refunded $70 for my sweatshirt and offered two free blowouts with botanical treatment to help the damaged hair. I haven't been in for the blowouts yet, but I appreciated the gesture. The woman I spoke with on the phone was lovely, very apologetic and pleasant. Thank you for the effort to make it right.

    After first appointment

    If you are getting color or bleach, DO NOT COME HERE. Today is the last day I will be coming to any Aveda institution. I have been coming to aveda in Ann Arbor and East Lansing for two years now, and every time I have had an appointment I have had to get 2-4 redo services every time. Today I came in for a second redo for taking the yellow out of the underside of my hair. I offered the student two options, which was to a) lightening the hair and make it blonde or b) if that's not possible, then I'm fine with doing low lights or darker. The student said it would lighten during both redos and there was no improvement. You can see the different in blonding from the top of my head to the bottom. I wish she would of had her educator come over and look at my hair before she moved forward to get a professional opinion, but the instructor didn't come over during my first redo at all, and only during the middle of my appointment on the second redo. Additionally, the student used very different techniques than the previous student I saw during my first appointment. The redo student left my toner in for 5 minutes, while the initial student left it if for almost 20 (with the great blonding results shown on the top of my head). The initial student also was precise with her application, while the redo student missed chunks of my hair when applying the balayage which I had to point it out more than once - and she also didn't accurately section my hair. I called aveda and expressed my frustration and asked what I should do, and they told me to go to another salon if I wasn't happy. Considering that I paid for the initial service, I feel cheated and very upset. I have pictures of my first appointment, first redo, and second redo. The bronze of my hair looks the same through all the picture and I'm pissed. In my previous experiences as aveda, I have had blue color treatments messed up twice by the same student, bleach out directly on my scalp when I specifically said I had high sensitivity and couldn't have it on my skin, and have had overall bad customer service as there were times when students walked away for nearly 45 minutes when they said they would be back in 10. I kept coming back because of a single amazing student tho who did my initial service, but was unable to do my redo. Overall, I will never come back to aveda for any services in the future. There are a few really great students, but it's few and far between - and I don't like rolling the dice when I get my hair done. I now need to get my hair fixed at another salon, which is going to cost me over $100 - which is frustrating considering I already paid more than that for my initial aveda service. UPDATE: Went to a professional salon, and they said the student damaged by hair so bad that I will have to have multiple appointments over the next 3 months to have my hair fixed. There are parts of my hair that are FRIED from the redo that are now permanently yellow and unable to pick up any pigment. I will need to now spend a total of ~$400 to fix the damage. DO NOT COME TO AVEDA.

    Brooklyn B at the institute gave me an amazing hair transformation! She was very thorough and fun to talk to. I would definitely recommend her for anyone needing any color assistance!

    It didn't live up to my expectations. The warm greeting was the best part of my visit. I had a 1-hour reflexology appointment. It's been over a year since I've had reflexology so I was thrilled to see the Institute provided it. The massage area on the first floor looked like a construction zone. The walls in the hallway were unfinished and unbecoming. The rooms have paper thin walls with curtains for a doorway. Basically zero privacy and you hear EVERYTHING. If you are seeking a quiet/relaxing place for a massage steer clear. The student who did my reflexology was graduating from the Institute and gave me a mediocre, bare minimal treatment. There wasn't much pressure applied to stimulate energy or release blockage. I was expecting to relax, restore energy and balance. The session was over before it started. The appointment was booked for an hour but I actually received 30-minutes service = 15-minutes per foot of reflexology. The 30-minute service cost $40 = $1.33 a minute which is pretty pricey for a lackluster massage. I felt gypped. Aveda should be transparent about the actual time spent on the services provided. The instructor explained that the preparation and student's discussion of the products with the customer takes time. Meh. I see an opportunity for improvement. No way should a 1-hour massage turn out to be 30-minutes of service.

I always book with Cameron Hawley, and honestly, he just gets hair. I don't trust many people with mine because it's taken me a long time to grow it out and take care of it, but he was the first person to cut it after two years of no trims, and I've been coming back every three months ever since. My hair has never felt better. I also brought my mom once, she wanted a short haircut, but Cameron made a better recommendation based on her face shape, and it turned out amazing. She left feeling so confident and beautiful! I've also been doing the strengthening treatment with my cuts, and it's made my hair noticeably healthier and shinier. This time around, I came in for a trim and a Keratin Express treatment, and the results were wowwwww. With all the rain lately, I usually get a ton of frizz, but this treatment actually works and is totally worth the hype. I also picked up a few products Cameron recommended including a mousse, an anti‑frizz serum, and a thermic treatment. Full disclosure: I'm a Kérastase lover and have been using the brand for years, but I didn't know about these specific treatments. Now I'm obsessed. My hair feels so smooth, glowy, and healthy. If you're picky about who touches your hair, Cameron is your guy. I couldn't be happier with the results every single visit!!!!

When I went home and washed it, it dried into a more shag inspired cut. There's a big difference between what I requested and the choppy and uneven cut I got. It's a hard haircut to disguise and my confidence has taken a blow. I spoke to Annie over the phone, and at my mention of the cut being a shag like she accused me of further cutting it once I had gotten home and told me she felt I was gaslighting her. This was within the first two minutes of our call and was really jarring. I offered to send her a photo to show what I was talking about but she refused, stating she'd only look in person. Her accusations were uncalled for and disrespectful, and I wasn't comfortable going back. I then spoke to the owner, Casey, and expressed how upsetting this was to experience. She ignored it entirely, gave no apology, and tried to reschedule me, even though it was obviously an issue that affected me wanting to return. I understand their policy requires them to look at the cut in person, but nobody would want to go in after being called a liar and a gaslighter. I said I was uncomfortable seeing her for my hair if she thinks this kind of treatment towards a client warrants no apology from the business. She came back with "our policy does not include refunds for non apologies." Overall, I'm shocked at the lack of professionalism and unnecessary snarkiness from the both the stylist and owner. Their website states they value creating a safe and comfortable environment for their clients, and review responses say that they hold their guest experiences to a very high standard. This could not be farther from what I experienced as a disappointed yet polite customer. Accusing clients of gaslighting and lying does not foster this kind of "safe" environment, and refusing to apologize for this kind of experience does not make customers trust you and want to come sit in your chair. I feel like this could have been avoided with a genuine apology on behalf of anyone involved.
