I've booked two haircuts here since being a student and have loved both! Don't let the fact that they are "in training" steer you away from going. Both times my hair has received excellent care! At my first appointment, she spent close to half an hour trimming all my dead ends off and helping me start fresh with me on my hair journey. I can now say she is at her own salon in Briarwood mall! My second stylist (about a year and a half later) helped trim me up again and decided to style my natural wavy hair (I normally straighten it every day because I don't know how to style it curly). She walked me through the process and it turned out great. She told me she had about a month left of her program and graduates in November! Booking online is super easy and I've never had trouble making an appointment or rescheduling. I've actually booked 15 minutes before a cut because I was desperate and they had plenty of availabilities, but they do recommend you reschedule 24 hours in advance. I'm extremely impressed with the friendliness, service, and atmosphere here. It is clean and modern, smells good, and has a comfy waiting area. Because the stylists are in school, they have a supervisor check the cuts to make sure you like them at the end which is something I appreciate. Prices are extremely affordable- $18 includes a cut, wash, condition, and style. If you are a student and show your ID, it's an extra 10% off. There's also is no option to tip, although I did ask about one. Will be taking advantage of my student status as long as I can, but still, $18 is hard to beat! read more

I have been to Aveda for services several times so it's a shame that I'm having to write this review to get any type of recognition. I booked an appointment for a scalp treatment and massage on 2/13/24 for the appointment to be on 2/23/24. I live in Livonia, a 30 minute drive both ways. I get to my appointment and I'm sitting in the chair waiting for my appointment to start when the worker comes up to me and says "I'm sorry, we have a worker on disability and cannot perform your massage" I'm sorry what? I'm literally sitting here waiting for it right now, I just drove 30 minutes, you couldn't have canceled before?! She says there's a different treatment I can get, it's a "stress relieving facial" and I'm thinking okay, for my inconvenience, it's on the house? Wrong. It's 20% off that's the best she can do. I ask, what about me driving 30 minutes to get here, paying for downtown parking, and your mistake for not canceling me, what do I get in compensation for ruining my Friday night? I get 20% off my next service and the manager will call the next day to hopefully make it better. Well, 2 days have gone by and no call from the manager. 20% is the best that you can do? How about paying me for the $15 in gas, $3 in parking, and another $10 for the inconvenience. Obviously joking, but 20% is ridiculous! What? Definitely the worst experience! Lyndsi cut my mom's hair for 130 dollars plus tip. Did the worst job. Rushed thru to then go outside and hang with a friend. I called and told them we need a do-over. I let them know my mom is going thru cancer treatment so it might be a minute. We called to make an appointment and they said it's been too long and they won't make it right. I have been to this Aveda institute several times without any bad experiences. Today I went in for an appointment scheduled for 1:00pm, I waited 30 minutes before I went and asked and they said my person was running late but they would match me with someone new! I wasn't in a rush, so it ended up working out okay. I asked for a trim, and I showed her with my hands on my hair of how much I hated off, I said about an inch. During my cut she kept circling around my head cutting shorter and shorter. Before I knew it, my hair was all the way up to my shoulders (5-6 inches maybe). I would have complained and said something, but there wasn't an instructor to come and check in with me like the usually do at the end. If you are getting color or bleach, DO NOT COME HERE. Today is the last day I will be coming to any Aveda institution. I have been coming to aveda in Ann Arbor and East Lansing for two years now, and every time I have had an appointment I have had to get 2-4 redo services every time. Today I came in for a second redo for taking the yellow out of the underside of my hair. I offered the student two options, which was to a) lightening the hair and make it blonde or b) if that's not possible, then I'm fine with doing low lights or darker. The student said it would lighten during both redos and there was no improvement. You can see the different in blonding from the top of my head to the bottom. I wish she would of had her educator come over and look at my hair before she moved forward to get a professional opinion, but the instructor didn't come over during my first redo at all, and only during the middle of my appointment on the second redo. Additionally, the student used very different techniques than the previous student I saw during my first appointment. The redo student left my toner in for 5 minutes, while the initial student left it if for almost 20 (with the great blonding results shown on the top of my head). The initial student also was precise with her application, while the redo student missed chunks of my hair when applying the balayage which I had to point it out more than once - and she also didn't accurately section my hair. I called aveda and expressed my frustration and asked what I should do, and they told me to go to another salon if I wasn't happy. Considering that I paid for the initial service, I feel cheated and very upset. I have pictures of my first appointment, first redo, and second redo. The bronze of my hair looks the same through all the picture and I'm pissed. In my previous experiences as aveda, I have had blue color treatments messed up twice by the same student, bleach out directly on my scalp when I specifically said I had high sensitivity and couldn't have it on my skin, and have had overall bad customer service as there were times when students walked away for nearly 45 minutes when they said they would be back in 10. I kept coming back because of a single amazing student tho who did my initial service, but was unable to do my redo. Overall, I will never come back to aveda for any services in the future. There are a few really great students, but it's few and far between - and I don't like rolling the dice when I get my hair done. I now need to get my hair fixed at another salon, which is going to cost me over $100 - which is frustrating considering I already paid more than that for my initial aveda service. UPDATE: Went to a professional salon, and they said the student damaged by hair so bad that I will have to have multiple appointments over the next 3 months to have my hair fixed. There are parts of my hair that are FRIED from the redo that are now permanently yellow and unable to pick up any pigment. I will need to now spend a total of ~$400 to fix the damage. First off I just want to say that I know there are many talented students at Aveda who do a great job, but I went in a couple weeks ago and got the absolute worst haircut of my life. I've been going to Aveda for many years to get color retouches but it was the first time I've ever come in for a haircut. I decided to give it a try since my regular hairdresser has gotten so expensive and I was just coming in for a simple trim. I told my student that I wanted to trim by bangs short in the middle and tapered off at the sides and long layers for the rest of my hair. I showed her a picture and made sure to mention that I didn't want short bangs straight across as in the photo, just short in the middle. I mentioned that my hair is thick and to thin the bottom of my hair if needed. She said that the long layers should help thin the bottom of my hair, but if needed she could use thinning shears to help thin it. She cut my long layers and then blow dried my hair. She then started to use thinning shears - she didn't tell me what she was doing, but I could feel the scissors dragging through my hair. As she made her way around me, I tried to look in the mirror because my hair felt funny. But my chair was turned the wrong way and then she said she was going to do my bangs and I had to close my eyes as she cut. When she was done and turned my chair around and I could finally see, I was shocked. Half of my hair was gone. It wasn't the length, although it was shorter, it was the thickness. My hair was so stringy, thin and wispy, I could hardly recognize myself. I think she asked what I thought, and I think I said something like "Wow, it's so thin", and she said "Yes, look at all the hair on the floor". I looked down and mounds of my hair were on the floor. I was so shocked, I didn't even know what to say. She took my cape off, took me downstairs. I paid and walked out struggling not to cry. When I got home and got a proper look at my hair, it was even worse than I thought. I have a shelf of super short hair, maybe an inch or two long, sticking out of the top and back of my head. She must have been using the thinning shears all the way to my scalp. Instead of my bangs being trimmed, the front of my head was buzzed. The student worked on me the entire time unsupervised. At no time did an educator come over - not at the beginning and not at the end. Without any communication at all, she performed a severe, excessive thinning of my entire hair all the way up to the scalp at the top of my head. My hair is hacked off and I am devastated. It looks like a stringy, wispy, stubbly mullet with bits of hair sticking straight up from the top of my head. It will take a year for this to grow out. Like I said, there are lots of great students there, but being a school you necessarily must take your chances, and it's not one I'll be taking again... read more

It didn't live up to my expectations. The warm greeting was the best part of my visit. I had a 1-hour reflexology appointment. It's been over a year since I've had reflexology so I was thrilled to see the Institute provided it. The massage area on the first floor looked like a construction zone. The walls in the hallway were unfinished and unbecoming. The rooms have paper thin walls with curtains for a doorway. Basically zero privacy and you hear EVERYTHING. If you are seeking a quiet/relaxing place for a massage steer clear. The student who did my reflexology was graduating from the Institute and gave me a mediocre, bare minimal treatment. There wasn't much pressure applied to stimulate energy or release blockage. I was expecting to relax, restore energy and balance. The session was over before it started. The appointment was booked for an hour but I actually received 30-minutes service = 15-minutes per foot of reflexology. The 30-minute service cost $40 = $1.33 a minute which is pretty pricey for a lackluster massage. I felt gypped. Aveda should be transparent about the actual time spent on the services provided. The instructor explained that the preparation and student's discussion of the products with the customer takes time. Meh. I see an opportunity for improvement. No way should a 1-hour massage turn out to be 30-minutes of service. read more

I don't like to leave bad reviews but I was really disappointed with my haircut here. I chose the stylist based on her pictures of hair she (supposedly) had cut on her Instagram. I showed her the exact same picture when I met her (attached) and told her that I loved the style and wanted the same thing. I especially pointed out that I really liked the wispy ends and the layering. I had the same length of hair but just wanted it a bit shorter and for her to take a lot of the weight off my hair since it was thick. She nodded like she understand and then proceeded to wash my hair before starting to cut. I saw her trim all the layers I already had off so that they were equal length but I didn't think much about it at the time since I assumed she knew what she was doing. She finished in 15 min while my hair was still damp. I asked her if she could dry it and take off more of the weight since it was still equally as thick. I'm sure she tried to do it but when it was all said and done, it looked nothing like the picture! It looked like she just gave me a straight cut so that it was now a bob. I was so disappointed. The instructor came over and tried to fix it by giving it more texture and taking more weight off. I still wasn't happy but I couldn't explain to them exactly what it was since I don't know about hair. I just know it looked nothing like the picture. I didn't want them to cut anymore after that because it was starting to get too short. When I asked if she could point out the layers at least, the stylist told me she doesn't do those kind of layers and all my "layers" were actually on top of each other as the same length. That's probably why I thought my hair was still too thick. Just overall disappointed. The worst thing is that my hair can't be fixed unless I want it even shorter. Every morning when I look at it, I'm just so disappointed. This also ruins the summer plan I had next month to travel Europe and take lots of pictures. I'm gong to have to wear a hat to cover this and it's really terrible. My hair is fairly straight and easy to manage, I thought it would be impossible to mess up. I guess I was wrong. I am writing this on behalf of two of my friends who do not have Yelp accounts but felt so strongly about their horrific experience here that they personally asked me if I could write a Yelp review on their behalf. As a lover of Yelp reviews and avid Yelp reviewer myself, I could not pass up the opportunity, especially after we had a yap session about their experiences here. I will detail the experiences of my two friends: Friend A and Friend B. Friend A told me that a while ago, she decided to book an appointment at this establishment. Another friend of ours, Friend C, decided to go with her as she also needed a haircut. Friend A walked into the establishment along with Friend C for their haircuts. However, the hairdresser gave Friend A backwards layers. In addition, the haircut took over three hours, and Friend A was sitting in the haircutting chair for the entire afternoon. This is absolutely ridiculous. No trim should take over 30 minutes. The most ironic and probably terrifying part of this experience was the fact that the hairdresser mentioned she was six months away from obtaining her cosmetology license. This is not the work of someone who is six months away from obtaining their cosmetology license. This is the work of someone who couldn't catch the Blue Bus on time and missed too many 9am required lectures in the Stamps auditorium and is now taking it out on innocent customers instead of learning to wake up earlier and swallowing the pill that is called life. I cut my dog's hair and even I cut better than this hairdresser! In fact, my friends have complimented my dog's hair and asked who the hairdresser is so they can take their dogs to that dog salon. If anyone is six months away from earning their cosmetology license, it should be me with my almost seven years of experience in cutting hair for dogs, not this disgraced hairdresser who had the audacity to chop Friend A's hair like she pregamed a little too hard before the football game. During this three hour Stanford prison experiment, Friend C finished her haircut, went to class, came back, and Friend A's haircut still wasn't done! Friend A later confided to me that she was crying in the shower after she got home because of how embarrassed she felt due to the goofy and shameful hairstyle she was left with. She later had to schedule another haircut session with a different hair salon in Ann Arbor, and when she arrived, that hairdresser took one look at her hair and exclaimed, "Wow this is terrible! Who did this? I hope this isn't from one of our hairdressers!" A few months later, I met up with Friend B. She said she had to leave because she was going to get a haircut and I immediately exclaimed, "OMG DO NOT GO TO AVEDA! My friend went there and got backwards layers and a side of PTSD!" Upon hearing this, Friend B immediately said, "Oh yeah; I've been there before, and I also had a similar experience. That place was absolutely terrible." I have never gone to this place and I will avoid this place like how I avoid men after hearing all of these traumatizing experiences from my friends. read more

It depends on what service you are booking, but this Aveda Institute hits the mark for some things and falls far short for others. Located in downtown Ann Arbor, the location is convenient, and the concept is appealing: Aveda products and services at lower prices than a salon. You get the Aveda experience for less and your stylist/aesthetician/masseuse gets some practical experience at the same time. I've frequented a number of Aveda Institutes over the years, and I'll keep this one on my list for some things, but not others. For starters, online booking and courteous check-in make this a positive experience at the beginning. Parking is located in the Maynard structure just across the street, so you don't have to stress about where your car will be and if you will be late to your appointment just finding a spot. My first visit was for a haircut. I described what I wanted, showed a picture, and even used the Aveda terminology that I had heard used to describe the cut (that I ended up loving) at Aveda in the past. The student just stared at me, called the instructor over, and when I repeated they also looked at me like I had 5 heads and said "I've never heard it called that." I shrugged inwardly -- I wasn't making it up, and had heard it called that in several salons in different states. In any case, the haircut was underwhelming and I ended up going to a "real" salon to get a touch up 2 weeks later. My next experience was a massage, which totally knocked it out of the park. The environment was soothing, the masseuse applied appropriate pressure and wasn't chatty (pet peeve of mine when I'm trying to relax in a massage), and I left feeling like I had truly gotten my money's worth. I would give this place 5 stars for the massages, and will definitely be returning for one. Most recently, I went in for a pedicure. I was a little bummed at how worn the chairs were, but decided to forget about it and relax. The girl doing my pedicure seemed very tentative, which is fine (I realize these are students), but by the end of my pedicure I realized she had only applied color. No base coat, no top coat. I had never gotten a nail service at any Aveda salon, so when I checked out I asked if that was standard practice. The girl at check out was a nail tech herself and assured me that wasn't standard. In an act of good customer service, they waived the fee that day and also offered me a coupon to come back, which I appreciated. Still, I was a little bewildered at how the student could have gotten that very basic part of the nail service so wrong. Great for some things, not so great for others, I may try a few more services (facial, etc) but would definitely recommend it for a massage. read more

I am new to the area and have been searching for someone to do my hair. I only needed a haircut and I have been to hair schools to get trims before and I have never had an issue! The Paul Mitchell students were always so nice and took their time and engaged in conversation. I liked one so much I followed her to the salon she went to after graduation. I was hoping this would happen again at Aveda! Def did not happen. First of all, I waited 30 minutes with absolutely no update or anyone telling me that they're running behind. Luckily I had nowhere to be, but you need to communicate with clients. Then, the student came downstairs and said my name then we started heading up the stairs; there was no "hey how are you! My name is X", no smile, very unpleasant from the start. I sat down in the chair and she immediately told me she didn't have time to wash my hair so she was going to just cut it dry. This made me nervous and I didn't like the idea of a dry cut, and I expressed that to her. Then, she offered to wash my hair and I could wait for a teacher to cut my hair. I asked how long that would be and she did not know. I told her I was going to just leave and maybe reschedule because I don't want someone to do my hair that doesn't want to do it or someone to rush through the haircut and I end up with a jacked up haircut. I felt like I was a bother to her, an inconvenience. She told me they overbooked all the students. So maybe don't do that to them? I wish I knew her name because she also needs an attitude check. If you don't want to be there, then leave!! Find a diff career because no way are you going to build a good reputation and clientele by making your clients feel the way I felt today. Aveda is cheap and good! I came here for a haircut pre-pandemic. Within a matter of minutes, a student stylist named U (her initial) helped me out with a scalp massage, a wash, and a haircut. U's instructor was present when I told her what I wanted. The instructor verbally directed U and left the station. Next, U worked her magic. In the end, her instructor came back and finished the work off herself. I was satisfied and tipped the student. I'm a low-maintenance gal, but I do like to look good. As long as my haircut is decent (defined as nothing jarring), I'll be content. If you're high-maintenance, I'd suggest going to a professional with extensive experience. read more

NON HANDICAP / NON WHEELCHAIR FRIENDLY / OVER-HYPED I might have been a victim of RACISM. Please read on to understand why the 1 star, and if you use their products, you probably want to reconsider if they are really professional hair specialists: I wanted to love this place but i can't after being "punished" to stand for over an hour. I mean, who cuts hair with the client standing all the way?! The last time I can remember half-standing for my haircut, was when I was 3yrs old, with my mother cutting my hair for me and me in her lap. (HI MOM!) With all the hype and good reviews, I bought a coupon off Groupon for $19. Firstly, I didn't know I was going to be handled by a student, which honestly, is okay. I don't mind but I thought that their Groupon ad was a little sketchy because nowhere on it, they mentioned that the entire experience is by students. Maybe, I'm dumb and It's my fault since it says institute so I'm assuming everyone who entered this salon, is served by a student. The staffs were friendly and nice except- If you have hair over your shoulders (long hair), disabled, can't stand or in a wheelchair, this place is not handicap friendly. Why? Because I was made to STAND for the entire hour long of my visit. Except for the 5mins of hair wash- because my hair was long. Armpit level not till my butt, mind you. There was another girl with long hair on the other side of the room having a hair cut but she was seated down. This was the most bizarre and weird experience in my entire life. I have never been made to stand for a haircut. Note that you can't move, have to stand in the same spot if you don't want your stylist to fuck up your hair. This is worst than being punished in school. I did not finish the haircut i wanted, did not finish the blow dry and just left because my parking was expired and I don't want a ticket just for this haircut that i was there for an hour and a half. My student stylist, she's nice, it's not her fault because her supervisor told her to get me to stand. I don't know but I'm never coming back even if this was the last salon on earth. Edit: Home and my hair is now dry. Okay, it doesn't even look remotely close to what I wanted which is a relatively easy cut. I asked for a V cut for my long hair.. I didn't think this would actually happen, so I decided to book an appointment for a blow out. And to my surprise, I received a phone call 3 hours before my appointment telling me that they had to cancel my appointment because the stylist called out... I've been to MANY hair salons and I've never had this last minute of a cancel. Completely unacceptable considering I had an event that night that I needed my hair done for. I came here with a Groupon for a haircut + botanical treatment, which I scheduled for using their website. I got an e-mail confirmation for both services but somehow it got lost in translation and I was only scheduled for the haircut. I only found out after my haircut was finished and I would've had to have my hair re-shampooed for the botanical treatment. We worked out a compromise and had my stylist put in curls instead of the treatment. The haircut and styling took a little over an hour. They offered tea or water; I had their house blend tea, which was quite good. It tasted like a blend of peppermint and licorice root. My haircut itself was average--I came in knowing that I was going to have a student cut my hair. You get what you pay for. The instructor came around to inspect it and do final adjustments. This place is dirty and has LICE! My partner went here and when they went to get their hair washed, the sinks were all filthy and the person working said "oh no, go to the last one, these are all dirty" then they sat down after the wash and after having a towel on for awhile the student started to comb and then they said "umm hold on" then went and got their supervisor. Supervisor said it was lice and was concerned that my partner is the one who brought it in so they checked their head and found nothing. Told my partner they couldn't proceed, the student was really concerned about the salon since they didn't find anything in my partner's hair yet the supervisor insisted it was my partner, go figure. My partner immediately left and went to the doctor to get assessed to which they told them they do not have lice and that the salon likely is going through the starts of a lice infestation. Called to inform them and they didn't seem concerned at all. Student was super kind, professional, and compassionate during the process but I wouldn't recommend going here at all after this unfortunately. read more

I typically go to Aveda in Royal Oak where I am paired with someone who is comfortable with African American hair or is at least willing to ask for help. My student was clearly very uncomfortable with African American hair and did not ask for help until a teacher helped at the end and the final product was still far from what was expected. I understand every student needs to learn but it's very clear this institution is not marketed towards African American hair. I gave two stairs because I do enjoy the products however I will not return for any services. read more

I didn't know, nothing descriptive in Groupon, no one mentioned during appointment setting - it's STUDENT-hair stylist PRACTICE! The good thing is, there is educator's oversite, who did my haircut in 4 routes. Phew!! Sorry, ladies, the rest is bad! Brooklyn seemingly had no interest in advising on trendy style for me, listening to my concerns nor doing her job, period. I was surprised that she had no idea where to start, but when teacher began the process, Brooklyn unintendedly, watched something else on the opposite side. Teacher left my other half for her to copy-finish, but she only liked to brush my back, hardly used scissors, before calling teacher back. I thanked teacher for finishing my haircut, before she still left my bangs to trim for Brooklyn! Instead of cutting shorter, Brooklyn turned my chair 90* and start curling it by fan. I reminded her to shorten first, but she argued, I insist on never curling bangs- she got upset and called poor teacher again, to finish the job she did anyway. Boy, Brooklyn likes to brush-brush! And it's not so much about her knowledge (which she has none), it's EVERYTHING about ethics and etiquette of business!!! It should be #1 thing to start the class, even before they pick up their first scissors. I have patience for anyone who's trying their best (it's shows), to learn anything, but 0 tolerance for rude and ignoring ignorant. I wasted a stress-injected 1,5 hour on simple haircut!! read more

I just used a Groupon for a facial here and had an excellent experience. It was so great that I plan to buy another Groupon for the exact same thing in another few months! The only reason this was not a five-star rating is because of the timing, which I've noticed other Yelpers mentioned as well. I bought a 90-minute facial and eyebrow wax package, which I assumed meant that the facial was 90 minutes long. However, what it actually meant was that I had booked a 90-minute time slot, during which everything would take place. This would have been totally fine if it had been noted in the Groupon description, but I feel like it's a little shady to not specify that directly and let customers be a little misled. To be clear though, the Groupon price is still a great deal even as-is; my only complaint is the lack of clarity in the description. So my 90 minutes included the consultation, a brief foot soak, the eyebrow wax, and the facial- meaning that the facial ended up being probably more like 60 minutes. I would not recommend buying the 60-minute Groupon option for this reason; that would be way too short! I got to grab a cup of that amazing Aveda tea while I waited to be called up (and I might have grabbed another cup on my way out afterwards... that tea is seriously so good). The whole experience was excellent, and I left feeling like a million bucks! read more

If you want to pay $75 for a $10 haircut look no further. This is the place. My hair is heavy and there's a lot of it, and I had one specific request: Make sure I can push my hair behind my ears. I teach and I'm on the computer a lot. I don't want it falling in my face. She agreed. She said she got it. At the end.... I had a big old hank of hair falling right in my eyes. Oh, she said, it's ALMOST long enough to...push... back... there. Thanks. I was better off before I got there. Hairspray won't hold it. Gel won't hold it. 55 year olds should not wear barrettes, am I right? I had ONE major request. For $75, you need to listen to your customers. And you can't fix this- what can you do- glue hair back on?! Not. Impressed. read more

Last night was my first visit and it went amazingly! When I booked the appointment I looked at reviews on Google and felt good about my decision. The day of my appointment I looked at Yelp reviews and started to worry. But I had no reason to worry - Zoe did amazing. I received a cut and color and both turned out great.
