The first cut I got here was a little uneven in the front, but I was willing to give it another go because everyone was really nice, it's a super convenient location for me, and the prices are super reasonable. Trying to schedule a second cut has been a nightmare. They cancelled my first appointment because of a plumbing issue. Totally understandable. I rescheduled the next week. Cancelled again. This time, I only got the call 10 min before my appointment. No voicemail or email left before that. Super frustrating. I'm a full time student and also working about 30 hours/week outside of class. It's not easy for me to schedule a hair cut and every time I do, it's something I look forward to all week. Feels like I'm Charlie Brown and they're Lucy with the football. Was unsure about making this review as all of the staff were extremely friendly and I received a full refund, but every time I'm brushing my hair or styling it or washing it I am horrified by its state. And I don't want anyone else to have the experience I did. I made an appointment with Carly to get the underside of my hair dyed a dusty lavender color (I specified this a lot and even had a photo for inspiration that I showed my stylist). Keep in mind that I had virgin hair so there weren't any obstacles in the way of coloring. She described to me how she was going to bleach the underside and then add the purple. She also mentioned how the purple would be more vibrant than I wanted so that it could fade to the perfect color I wanted. This all sounded great to me, but what I didn't know at the time (and neither did my stylist) was that you have to bleach dark hair over the span of about three weeks with a gap of two weeks in between to let the hair breathe and prevent you from completely killing it. Especially with such a light desired color. But this wasn't suggested, so I agreed to her plan, and was very excited. (I was also hesitant to write this review because during the whole process Carly and I had great conversations and she was very kind to me and I could tell she was trying her best). But by the end, I was left with three hues of purple and a pinkish color in my hair (see first image). I was very confused and I could tell that Carly wasn't content with the outcome either and was trying to reassure me and say that it looked cool, but it wasn't at all what I wanted. This was my first experience getting my hair dyed and I was nervous about the whole situation so I thanked her, checked out, tipped, and left. When I got to my car I was trying to make the best of the situation. I tried telling myself I liked it and it was good. But after talking with my friends and family, I was convinced to ask for a better job. So I made the appointment to come back in and get it fixed the next day. Carly was worried about how the state of my hair would be with so much bleach and dye in just two days, but fit me in on her off day (which was much appreciated) and planned to dye all the colored parts a darker shade of purple, as well as do a conditioning treatment as a preventative measure. I really appreciated this, but at the end it was still uneven. On top of that, when I got home and was combing my fingers through my hair mindlessly I realized that clumps of hair were coming out. Huge clumps that scared me. Also, my hair had the texture of artificial doll hair and felt completely dead. After continuing to comb through, I was left with a large clumps of my dead hair, and a good 7" of hair loss in the back (pictures two and three). I was horrified. My once beautiful and virgin hair was now mis-colored doll hair. After discussing this with my family again, I was encouraged to reach out and get my money back. So I did. And the manager and Carly didn't hesitate to give me all of my money back. While I appreciate this as it was a large sum of money, it didn't take back the damage that was done. I wasn't instructed on how to fix it or anything, and just decided to do plenty of hair masks. Flash forward over two months later and my hair is still dead and has an awful texture. I am horrified every time I am brushing my hair or washing it. And sometimes my hair continues to fall out. I will not be returning, and I strongly urge others to reconsider if they're looking to get their hair dyed here. read more

I was dissatisfied with my previous hair salon, so after doing some research I booked online with Monserrat. I was not disappointed! She did a great job and made an effort to make conversation with me. She checked in with me throughout the cut to see how I was feeling, which I appreciated a lot. I showed her a few photos of what I had in mind, sort of a curtain bangs style- I had layers but nothing this short. I loved it, everyone's been telling me how much they love it so she must have really done a fantastic job. I'll be coming back! The inside was very bright and clean as well. So just moved to Michigan and this was my first haircut which was pretty nerve wracking. I had an appointment with Monserrat, she's very friendly and relatable to chat with and everyone at the salon is nice. However I didn't really get the haircut I was expecting to, I think it was partially my fault since I wasn't super specific with what I expected to see at the end but I also didn't get asked many clarification questions (I just got one question about if I wanted it blunt or more textured). For a bit more context, I have short hair (before the cut it was just brushing shoulder length) and I asked for a long bob that was just a little past chin length. What I got was a super short bob that curled around my jaw line & was very....ball shaped. I was asked at the end if there was anything I didn't like but at that point, there wasn't much that could be done other than to say I didn't like the cut. Overall, it was an okay experience but I think the salon is just a bit packed so they can't really take the time to do a really tailored experience for every person. For what I was paying ($60 before tip), I was expecting a bit more detail and precision. I am also taking the lesson to heart to give as much detail as possible next time I go for a cut read more

Got haircut by monserrat because of the good reviews. I showed her pictures of what I wanted and she told me she didn't like them and wanted to do something else. I said okay because I trusted her and that was my own fault. she did not know how to handle Asian hair at all and when she saw that I seemed to be dissatisfied with my cut, she told me the reason why it didn't look like how I wanted was because my hair is "just too straight." However I have asked for the same exact thing from Asian stylists in my hometown and they were able to deliver what I was looking for. I paid $90 in total and went home and cried for six hours straight because it was that bad. This place might be a good choice if you're white but personally after the experience I had I am never going to a non Asian salon ever again. read more

I just had a fantastic appointment with Darby! She filled the blonde on my ends, applied an all-over color, and cut my thick, raggedy hair into something cute and manageable. She was also a total sweetheart who made sure to grab a chair for my husband to sit near us and took the time to explain how to style my new cut. My husband barely trusts anyone to cut his (gorgeous!) curls, and he's been coming here since we moved to Ann Arbor. He loves Jess, and he always comes home looking extra handsome! The location is convenient for us, although parking can be a pain if there's something happening on or near campus. Scheduling is easy. I called and left a message when they were closed, and they called me back the next day. The person who works at the front desk is always really nice, and Darby has been really great about accommodating my schedule. She also made sure to tell me that if I wasn't satisfied with my hair, I could come back in and she would fix it for free. Also, I really believe that good haircuts are one of those things that you should splurge on, but Orbit is shockingly reasonable as nice salons go. I ended up paying about 50% of what I had expected to pay for a two-process color and cut. In short, they're great. Get your hair done here. read more

I've gotten a few haircuts here and it must be a very hit-or-miss experience. I got a haircut here that I loved last year and decided to come back. Unfortunately, I had a very bad experience this time and won't be back again. I scheduled an appt. online and received a call the day of that the stylist was home sick. Ok, it happens, no big deal, I reschedule my appointment for the next day. When I show up for my second appointment, the receptionist informs me that she's still out sick and that I should have received a call. I hadn't (double checked my phone to confirm I hadn't missed anything, nope, no call). Still, it happens, people get sick, they obviously don't have a great system in place to deal with it but I understand, and I reschedule yet again. I show up for my third appointment 5 min early. 10 min past my appointment time, I see my stylist finishing up her client. Then, someone else gets in her chair! I ask the receptionist if I did indeed have a 3pm appointment (it's now almost 3:15) and she says yes. I ask about why my stylist is cutting someone else's hair instead and she replies that they do trims in between clients... if I was already over 10 minutes late for my next appointment I would probably not accept someone else in between. At this point I am frustrated - I value my time and carefully schedule my days, but was desperate for a haircut so I decide to wait even though the receptionist offers to reschedule (which would have been the fourth time). My gut told me to walk out and find somewhere else, and I wish I had listened. So I finally, about 20 minutes later, am in the chair and tell Monserrat that I have been growing out my bangs and am looking to even out the rest of my hair to match their length. She says something about "curtain bangs", I reply "I don't know what that is", and then she washes my hair and starts the cut. About 5 minutes later, she cuts 2-3 inches off my bangs - I am in shock and have no idea why that happened. The whole time, she's asking my questions about my hair. I let her know that I usually don't blow dry and sometimes emphasize my natural waves with a diffuser. The style she gives me is heavily blown-out with a round brush, which couldn't be farther from my daily routine. I'm sure she was rushed because of the late start, and it seemed like she wasn't paying the slightest attention to what I was asking for & telling her. I have been devastated ever since, and asked everyone I know for recommendations about where I can go to get this tragedy fixed. I'm so disappointed with this experience. It took her 3 seconds to ruin what I'd been working on for a year (growing out my bangs). Now I'm dealing with a crappy haircut that doesn't style easily and have been wearing hats/headbands every day. read more

Today I went to orbit to get a color correction after a horrible dye job from the Aveda school a block away. I went into Orbit for the first two weeks earlier for a consultation and they were very sweet and accommodating to fit me in so soon! Jessica did my hair today and was very nice to talk to and did a fantastic job. She and other employees were friendly and great at giving me tips on how to treat my hair to maintain the job. I walked out with a huge smile on my face! I will be a returning customer for sure. Once upon a time, a girl woke up from a mediocre haircut and a resulting two months of perfecting her messy bun, and called Orbit Hair Design. She made an appointment with Wendy Walter and awaited her fate. The girl didn't know what she wanted, exactly. She was one of those haircut customers -- she wanted to walk in feeling like a toad, and walk out feeling like the most glamorous lady. These are probably the worst customers at hair salons. Still, let's talk about Wendy. Wendy was undaunted by the girl's requests for something new, something fun, something to liven up the fine hair that liked to lie so close to her scalp. Wendy made a plan. She even asked the girl how she did her hair, what products were lurking in her cabinets. Wendy was, the girl already suspected, probably a genius. As she washed and snipped the girl's hair, Wendy didn't make any awkward haircut conversations. Oh no, the two swapped stories about books and gardens and Ann Arbor. And when the cut and style were complete, the girl really felt like she had entered into some haircut fairytale, because my goodness, did she look snazzy. This could've been the happily ever after, and it would've been great, but the girl, like most people, had to wake up the next morning. She had to wash her hair. And like so many, the girl felt too lazy to blow-dry her hair. She started working on other projects/catching up on the latest Community episode. When she looked in the mirror, it had AIR DRIED into a perfect, volumized, messy-wavy delight. So, fellow yelpers, I FINALLY got a good haircut. After going to Aveda for years as a broke college kid, I thought it was about time to step it up a notch, even though I had finally achieved what is referred to as "Aveda Numbness" (when you reach the point where you truly do NOT give a shit anymore because god damn it, that haircut was only $15). I made an appointment at Orbit and ended up with Jessica, who's hair consultation skills were second to none. Jessica asked all the right questions and repeated everything back to me to make sure she understood what I wanted and explain her process. While my knowledge of what a good hairstylist should do is limited to what I've learned from Tabitha's Salon Makeover, I do believe that was a damn fine consultation. She was comfortable, informal (the good kind), and a great conversationalist, and for somebody like me who usually feels ill at ease in the hair chair (even more so with untalkative and/or awkward hairperson), it was a relief. I walked out of there completely satisfied. It's certainly going to cost you a little bit more, but with haircuts you get what you pay for. It's all a matter of finding your perfect bracket. For some people (those who just want a little trim, or for those of us who just don't care much about your hair), Aveda is just fine. For those wanting to take a step up and see what a professional is like, give Orbit a call. Oh, and a quick tip: some of the stylists here only take cash. The nearest ATM is a brief, but damn cold walk across the street (in the winter), so make sure when you make your appointment you ask the receptionist your stylist's accepted forms of payment. read more

I just got my hair cut and colored by Carly and she's a true gem. This is by far the best haircut I've had in Ann Arbor. I have very thick, curly hair. Anyone with similar hair can relate to how hard it is to find someone who will do a good job. I hate it when i walk in and a stylist asks me if I want a blow out. Other times stylists just try to cut it like straight hair and it ends up looking like a tent. Carly has a ton of prior training with curly and textured hair, so she knew just what to do. She put in lots of internal layers and stacked it up shorter in the back so that it has shape. She cut part of my hair while wet, then diffused it a little and cut the rest of it will dry. I've never had a stylist take this approach before and it turned out great. I was amazed by how meticulous she was with cutting every curl. The color job also turned out exactly like what I asked for. On top of everything, she has some of the most reasonable prices, $65 for color and $35 for the cut. read more

Josh has been my go to guy here for the past 3 years. He does a good guys cut. I'm incredibly particular with my hair and he was the first person that ever cut my hair in a way I was satisfied with on the first try. It's also a fun atmosphere, it's relaxed, and they usually have good music on. Price for Josh is $35, which isn't bad, but sometimes just seems a bit much for a guys cut in Ann Arbor, but maybe that's just my east coast misconception that everything should be cheaper here just because it's the midwest. Fun side-note. Josh also makes great music and smoked meats. You can find either by googling ThrillTrain (the band) and GrillTrain (the meat). I recently moved from Toledo to Ann Arbor, and had been seeing my hairstylist for 4 years before he moved to another country! I haven't had a haircut since November due to fear of seeing another stylist. But with bangs now past my ears I figured to suck it up and go. The people at Orbit were great about fitting me in last minute and very flexible with schedule. I went to see Josh, and he was super nice after I had showed up almost 20 minutes late. He's very laid back which instantly put me at ease. We did a consult on my hair and he was very blunt in letting me know the hairstyle in the picture I brought would not suit my hair type. I actually appreciate and HONEST hairstylist that made sure not to give me something just because I wanted it. From there he washed and conditioned my hair with a natural product that smelled AMAZING and gave a great scalp massage. He definitely knows his product and was not intimidated by all my questions. I'm a smart shopper and I know when someone is trying to just sell me something, which he was not. So the cut... I was soooo scared once he started cutting, but he told me just what he was doing the whole time, and kept my length which I had asked for, but did cut off the dead damaged ends. By the time he was done it was like he had read my mind. He gave my the look I had wanted but made it fit MY hair. I could not be happier. Plus he styled it in a way that I definitely have been able to do at home. I think whether or not you can style your hair just as well as the stylist did AFTER a haircut, really shows how good a cut it is. He also guarantees his cuts so if there was something I didn't like, I could go back and have him fix it. Oh and FREE bang trims! I have found my next hairstylist for life, unless he moves too lol. I usually don't post on yelp but I had to express my disparate experience at Orbit. Loved the vibe, nice but not pretentious space in the heart of A2 downtown. I will preface that I have thick, asian hair that is not the easiest to work with.. I had John the owner as my hairdresser Pros John was super nice and chill Nice space Very reasonable price $45 Major Con Hair styling: I left the salon with a puffy ball of hair. He basically dried on low heat with a regular brush, it wasn't even completely dry when I left. Every other time I've gotten a haircut they've used a large round bristle brush on my hair to good effect, so I was shocked at what he was doing to my strands. He went on to put greasy pomade type product on the TOP of my hair. So just imagine greasy roots with poofy, frizzy ends, basically every girls nightmare. I had to flatiron my hair when I got home b/c its was just all over the place. So overall I really wanted to like my experience. If you have silky strands to begin with I think you'd be okay, but girls w/ any sort of texture you may want to reconsider! read more

I was new to the area and found Orbit via Yelp, and was nervous about having a new person cut my hair after going to the same person for the last 3 years. Josh was excellent. Not only did he provide a great cut, he also gave a list of things that I should do in the area. I'm only giving Orbit four stars because $35 seems like it is a bit much for a haircut in Ann Arbor. Wendy at Orbit is the best best best. The first time I had my hair cut by her I thought to myself: "Oh, finally I know what a great haircut is like!" In my experience most stylists, even at high-end salons, will give you one of about five haircuts that they are familiar and comfortable with. With Wendy every cut feels like a collaboration between what I want & how I'm feeling and what she thinks would look good & what is exciting or interesting for her. Her creative energy in approaching her profession and every individual haircut is unique and difficult to find amongst stylists. I am frequently complimented on my hair, even when I haven't had it cut in months. I send anyone who asks and anyone who will listen to Wendy because really loving the way your hair looks -- and trusting that you WILL look great -- is the best feeling. Plus she is funny, kind, well-read and has a great sense of style. If I ever think about leaving SE Michigan the task of trying to find a stylist who compares to Wendy would be, by far, the worst part of it. read more

I'm normally not a hair salon person and tend to walk away disappointed more often than not when getting a "nice" haircut because my hair has some stubborn tendencies, but Carly at Orbit just totally converted me. I went in to Orbit with some VERY long hair planning to donate but without a solid idea of how I wanted the new short haircut layered. Carly took extra time to ask me about my hair's texture and my styling abilities, then gave me the most awesome haircut I've ever gotten. She even showed me how to style it quickly before I left. I went backpacking for a week and the haircut looked amazing. I came back and continued to skip styling it in any way and it still looks great. Darby took the time to understand what I wanted and patiently spent over an hour providing a great haircut along with a fun conversation. She is a thorough professional and asked me to come back after a week for any adjustments after my natural hair sets in the new haircut. I had been going to a cheap school for hair cuts for years, I do not know how I never heard of Orbit. When I couldn't get an appointment at the place I normally go to I googled a good place to go, found Orbit on this site and gave it a chance after the great reviews I saw. What I want out of a hair cut is someone I trust to cut my hair. I want them to do what I want, but I also what them to give their ideas on what looks good for me. That is exactly what I got from this experience. I got a short hair cut...and I have not had hair this short except for one other time (and that time was bad). I did not know short hair could look good on me...and it is amazing. I have gotten so many compliments--mostly from guys! I didn't know guys even noticed hair. It has been a very satisfactory experience and I plan to return until I move...and even then I will probably come back again. I used to love Orbit, but was really disappointed with my most recent appointment a couple of months ago (hence why I haven't returned). I was going in to get some outgrowth bleached to match the rest of my hair. My usual stylist didn't work there anymore so I tried someone different. The stylist lifted the color so much and then toned it so that the outgrowth came out looking blue-grey compared to the rest of my pale blonde hair. I also was left with a chemical burn (including scabs) on my scalp, which has only now almost healed over after three months. When I called to complain about the burn, the stylist just told me to buy some aloe vera to apply; no other solutions were offered, not the mildest expression of apology extended. A couple of times throughout the appointment she lowkey criticized my own diy cut and color. I'm a student/recent-grad so I can't usually afford salon services and thought I'd treat myself this time. I'm disappointed that my experience was ultimately embarrassing and left me with more problems. read more

She is the stylist who has done my hair for, literally, almost my entire life. I've been forced to try other places while going to school and living out of state, and NO one tops her! No one! I always walk out with an amazing cut and awesome color. She's super popular, so sometimes its hard to get an appointment right away, in which case I go to Claire who is also very good!! She too has given me good cuts and great color. I also went to her to get my hair done for a wedding and she didn't make me look like a total moron. It was just pretty and classic. Perfect. All of the other stylists seem super cool too, laid back and friendly. The actual space is great too. Pretty spare, which appeals to me, and bright, with great lighting fixtures. White walls, a few pieces of black furniture in their little waiting area, and a great selection of mags! ALWAYS important for a salon. Oh... last time I was getting my color done I was super hungry and while I was waiting for it to process I went around the corner to get a bite with my dumb cape and shit in my hair. I got back and the receptionist about fell over and said she could have gone out and grabbed something for me! What, you would even go and fetch me food??? A great perk, but I totally don't mind going out looking kind of funny. So yeah, go, trust me, they are great. I wish I could clone Patty and bring her out west for all my hair needs! read more
