Tucked into a back corner of a small shopping center, this salon might be consisered a little off the beaten path but I beat a path to it as soon as I heard Alexis was cutting, coloring and styling hair here! She is so good I would follow her anywhere! If you call the salon to book an appointment or get information, you may go to voicemail, but don't despair! Calls are returned! And once your appointment is booked, you can opt in to receive text reminders a day or so before you are supposed to be there. Very handy. And once you arrive, there's no waiting around. Your appointment will start on time. Salon is quiet (except for the blowdryers!) with a very laid back, unpretentious vibe. But unpretentious does not mean unprofessional. I've been hesitant about writing this review for several months I came in as a new client with a picture of the color I wanted. After some back and forth, Peter moved forward with the color but I wasn't exactly sure what color he was going to do and how. The color I wanted was a medium brown and I ended up with basically brassy dark blonde. Peter doesn't necessarily believe in toners. Essentially he wasn't to lift the hair to a point where it doesn't need toning. It sound ok in theory but then you end up with a million brassy dark blonde highlights in very dark, almost black hair. Furthermore, I understand the place is small but I was there for almost 7 hours. He continued to see customers in between processing. That amount of time was just ridiculous. Also, there was a lady helping him. I'm not sure if she was an assistant or what but he was really snappy and short with her. Personally, to me, it was borderline workplace harassment. In the end, 7 hours later, the charge was $212 before tip. I could have said something then and there but I was so tired/ in shock. Was I hallucinating? Would it tone down? Was it the lighting? He told me to come in 6 months later. I went to a different salon a week after to get it corrected. read more

SO glad to have found Peter! I have very often struggled for a good haircut which is easy to guess since most of my reviews are about hair salons!! I like to give direction regarding what i would like but do not like to micromanage my haircut as I always feel (or hope) that the stylist knows best how to shape it out as per hair texture and thickness. Peter KNOWS! exactly what he is doing! He lets you patiently say what you want and then confidently takes over and does his job. He is also bold which instills confidence in the client as well. I came in for my first time this week and saw Alexis! She was amazing. I was there from 5:45 - 8:45 and she was so up beat and personable the whole time. Not only did she give me the most beautiful hair, but she made the process really fun. She definitely know what she's talking about when it comes to hair. I went in looking for something different, but nothing too drastic and she gave me exactly that. I could go on and on but the pictures speak for themselves. oh also, THIS WAS HALF OFF! Amazing. I'm careful about my hair because asian hair stumps a lot of hair stylists that don't have enough experience with asian clients. She did a great job, was very friendly and chatty, and was very understanding about that broke college student life. I found this salon only by ogling and then finally asking someone I knew who did her (BEAUTIFUL) hair - seriously, her color is gorgeous. I knew that I needed to try this place and I was happy that I did. I would recommend calling in advance because they are very popular and book up fast. Also if you want multiple services, to be sure to leave yourself enough time as you are scheduled with different hair specialists (one person for cuts, another for colors, etc). I love this approach because you get really specialized services, however, you may end up waiting 20 minutes between your color appt and your cut appt (I think that may just mean the colorist was super fast, so that's not a complaint at all) so even if it always takes 2.5 hours for a color/cut, make sure you go by your actual appointment times when figuring out when to tell the babysitter you will be back! It's worth it - don't worry at all. I was there a little over three hours, which seemed like a long time, but it was just a different way of scheduling. I am going back in two weeks and I am very excited :) They also sell Pureology which is my absolute favorite. If nothing else, go there to buy your products!!!! And lots of parking available - one of the reasons I was looking for a non-downtown salon. This location is perfect and parking is ample. So happy :) read more

I am extremely protective of my hair and very particular about who cuts it. I got a recommendation for Peter from a friend with similar hair, and I haven't looked back. I have only ever seen Peter for a haircut, and I have no complaints. He knows hair, he can read people and give you a cut that is flattering and matches your personality. They've put great precautions in place for COVID - grabbed a new mask at the door, wide open space with only a couple of other people, masks on during the full haircut. After moving to Ann Arbor, I went from salon to salon trying to find someone that I worked well with and was in my price point. I finally found A Peter James Salon and have been going there for years now. I first started seeing Trisha - I was really happy with her work, but sadly, she moved out of state and I started seeing Peter. Now, Peter feels like a friend! He always remembers where our last conversation left off and you can tell, after being in the salon for a few minutes, that he has a loyal and familiar client base. This was such a disappointing experience, but I take partial blame. First of all, beware of the strip mall the salon is located in and don't let that scare you. If I hadn't known it was in a run-down strip mall, I might have turned around but the salon is quite nice inside. I had my hair cut by Stacy, a new hairdresser who has been there since spring 2010. I was apprehensive to get my hair cut in Ann Arbor at all, since I love my old salon in San Francisco, but I was short on time and decided to check it out. I take responsibility for two main things: 1. I am not decisive. I don't really know what I want and I go to a salon where I hope I can trust my stylist to do what is going to look best on me. The generic conversation of "light layers" sounds fine to someone like me who doesn't really know what will look best. So, shame on me. 2. Some new stylists are amazing, but there is something to be said for experience, and I should have requested a stylist with more experience. My haircut wasn't horrific by any means. I left the salon feeling as though it was layered more than I had wanted -- and while she was cutting it I said at one point that it was layered enough, and she told me that she had to finish it. Overall, when someone else styles your hair it usually doesn't look so bad - until you have to do it yourself. It wasn't until I got home that I took a closer look. I pulled my hair back and realized that layers on one side were almost an inch shorter than the other. I remembered that she hadn't compared the length of the two sides, which I should have noticed and pointed out. Again, shame on me. Then again, I don't tell my auto mechanic what he is missing when he fixes my car. I also noticed that the layers are very chunky -- so chunky that I committed the ultimate sin of taking a scissors and trying to fix them myself...which I did. The haircut also took a long time. She was 10 minutes late to begin and I was finished an hour and half after I arrived. That is too long for a haircut. So where do I go from here? 1. My hair will grow so I am not going to freak out -- and it is only hair, but I do notice it and think about it every time I look in the mirror, which is annoying. 2. I don't want to go see a better stylist to have someone fix it because I don't want it any shorter and I don't want these layers cut any more. 3. I now know better and will go someone I trust next time. To the credit of the salon. Peter James was there cutting someone's hair who had flown in from out of state, and everyone there said that they only let Peter cut their hair (including my stylist)...so maybe I just chose the wrong stylist. read more

These guys are absolutely great at what they do! I got my hair colored. At first, it was way off of my original plan, but what they recommended turned out great and absolutely gorgeous. They are the best at coloring and although I have not gotten my hair cut there, I know they do a fantastic job. The location is a bit sketchy, but don't let that put you off. I've already been to this salon twice now, and both times Trisa has done an amazing job! I have long, typical Asian hair and she did a great job creating smooth, flowing layers unlike other salons I've been to in the area. She is knowledgable about how to work with Asian hair and I really appreciated her advice and suggestions. She is super friendly and easy to talk to. This Salon is one of the best kept secrets in Ann Arbor. I had no idea that it existed until several months ago and I had been by it many, many times! One of my friends recommended it, so I went and was pleasantly surprised - and even more surprised to find out how long they had been there and I had not heard of them! I went in with a general idea of what I wanted, looked through some books and showed Peter, who helped me with a new look for my long hair that was up-to-date and easy to do. This summer's heat and humidity could have meant a series of "bad hair" days for me. Instead, I've had great looking wash and wear hair for casual daytime AND a super style for work and nights out with Peter's awesome haircut and Gary's color and Keratin treatment. I wasn't convinced the Keratin treatment would have any benefit to my hair but it's never looked better. I've had two treatments and the second treatment was better than the first. That being said, when I had my hair cut at A Peter James Salon, I absolutely loved the haircut I received. When I went back, I made sure to get the same stylist and got a great haircut, just not what I wanted or as awesome as I had the first time. Great place!!! Peter is a real artist with a lovely way about him who only does cuts. He really listens AND delivers. Gary does Redken color and will stick with you until you get just the right shade. I was dealing in red which is notoriously difficult and went back in to tone it down. Gary couldn't have been nicer about it and made the change I wanted perfectly. I recently moved to Ann Arbor, where I had two underwhelming cuts: one in downtown Ann Arbor and one in Birmingham (supposedly more urban and hip...HAH!) Was ready to flee to NYC for a cut when someone recommended Peter James. My heart sank as I approached the strip mall where it's located. But once inside: only great things follow! Cool space. Service is superior. Dawn at the front desk is "on it" and very helpful. They also have big savings coupons for referrals and first time cuts--a nice nod to these lousy economic times--And they have a book lending library! read more
