June is so welcoming and accepts walk-ins. My husband has been coming consistently for his haircuts every few weeks. I was waiting to grow mine out and felt it was finally time to chop it. I showed June a picture and she cut it exactly as I wanted and even better! It's very affordable here at $28 for my medium length to almost shoulder length hair cut. My husband pays $23 (not including tip). Definitely recommend this place! I chose not to get it washed to save money and I can do that at home anyways. The good: if you need a $15 haircut that only takes 10 minutes, this seems to be the place to go. Seriously, the many positive Yelp and Google reviews about quick, inexpensive hair trims attest to that. The bad: I suspect anything that is *not* a $15 haircut that takes 10 minutes is gambling with your hair at New Age Salon. My wife specifically chose New Age for a perm, assuming they would have experience with Asian hair. She showed the stylist a photo of exactly what she wanted. I attached it here. The stylist set the perm and put my wife in a chair for slightly more than four hours. (We are not complaining about the time involved, by the way. This is normal for a perm.) After unwrapping my wife's hair, the stylist insisted on not drying it and told her to let her hair air dry. (Point is she left with wet hair, unable to see the finished perm.) Bill for this perm: $220. We went out to eat afterwards and I took a photo of the completed work. That's the second photo I attached. As you can see, what she asked for / paid for and what she received are two very different things. I suggest coming here for a quick $15 haircut. Not a perm. read more

I was initially apprehensive when I called asking if they did walk ins, but when I got the ok I decided "eh, why not? What's the worst that could happen?" I was cared for by June who is incredibly sweet and really well informed. She explained to me the logistics of the type of haircut I wanted and what would suit me best based on my hair texture and overall wants. She was very fast and was just overall great. I did walk out feeling a bit nervous (sometimes you need to marinate on a new style) and after showering I can say she cooked and she did so well! I love my new hair! Having super thick and coarse Asian hair was always difficult for people to cut, so seeing how she was able to do it so effectively was great. read more

If you have Asian hair and just want to pay for a haircut and haircut only, New Age is the only salon I recommend. It's around $30 give or take for a women's haircut and style and it only took my hairdresser 15 minutes to cut and style my new curtain bangs. Before the pandemic, they allowed walk-in appointments. I would not recommend getting your haircut here if you are very particular about your hairstyle and want to pay for those extra perks such as a fancy-looking salon. I came to New Age this afternoon to do a simple haircut to thin out my hair. I came after the football game expecting it to be busy but they had space and accepted my walk-in appointment immediately. June cut my hair, and she was so sweet and knew exactly what I wanted. I told her my last haircutting experience with another barber wasn't great and she listened to what I actually wanted which I really appreciated. The women that work here are always so cheerful, and even when the waiting area looks packed, they still welcome you in, and the wait goes by quickly. They do a good job trimming my hair, and seems to be the only place my husband is satisfied after a haircut. I do wish their womens haircut pricing was more clear. Also FYI unlike other Asian hair salons in places like NYC, they dont wash and massage your head prior to your hair cut here. Great place to get a quick haircut. Very fast, efficient, and get the job done. Usually the wait is under 20 minutes. They have 3 barbers on hand, who are also the owners of the shop. Very friendly and jolly middle age Asian women. Moved to this town a long time ago, something like 20 years ago, so no English problems, if that's what you are worrying about. Seems like a lot of students go here regularly. This place is great at doing the usual normal cuts. If you want something fancy, do tell them clearly though, else they are going to default to a fairly conservative cut. They can probably do fancier cuts pretty well, based on the people walking out of that shop, but I haven't had personal experience, so go read some other review if you really care about this. read more

I know many folks have their favorites, but the ladies knows only one style of hair cut :) $13.95 for guys... my haircut usually lasts about 10 minutes... only get trim there. Consider it a hole in the wall joint for hair cut... it's like an assembly line for haircut... because you line up, get your cut, pay and out the door. My only criteria for my hair are that it doesn't get too long, and that I need it layered. I usually get my hair cut once a year, so if you're looking for something fancy - this place is not it. HOWEVER, if you're like me, and you're pretty laid-back about your hair, (and also don't want to break the bank with your haircut), this place is the bomb. They have Asian stylists who know how to cut Asian hair (read: layering it properly), and they've always been super friendly. I've never had a problem with how my hair has looked afterwards, but I knocked off a star because they're pretty vague about prices for women's haircuts. They say it starts around $20, but will randomly +/- a couple $ based on how much work your hair took. I'd love if they could just standardize the prices for women's cuts. read more

I LOVE June!!! She owns this salon with her husband and is super sweet. This is the place to come if you have Asian hair and can't be bothered with frills and pretentious pampering. We started coming here for hubb's hair two years ago, and June always does a fantastic job. I had an appointment next door at Douglas J but it was my first time and I didn't realize I had gone to new age, which is directly next door. I walked in and told the women my name and that I was there for a specific stylist to do color and a cut as I had scheduled with them a month prior. They did not fess up and tell me the woman doing my hair was not the specific stylist let alone that I clearly didn't have an appointment with them at all since I was at the wrong place. It's my responsibility to know where I'm going but I don't understand why they pretended like I had an appointment with them and that I was being seen by the specific stylist. She did my hair and the process was unlike anything that's been done before. All I wanted was a root touch up and now the top of my head is a copper color 3 days later and the roots are not even covered. They were kind but I do feel lied to and scammed, so I suppose not truly kind. Upset. read more

I've been coming here since 2007 when I started college at the University. I love that this place is right in the heart of Ann Arbor campus. It's an easy stroll from central campus. Parking is never too bad as there are several meters parking and structures nearby. New age offers cheap and stylish hair cuts. June is the owner and she is great and really accommodating to your preference. There are usually two other lady who also provide hair cuts, but I've always gone with June. They are all really nice and it's never a long wait. They are also good at women's haircut. I introduced my girlfriend, who just started working in the area and she loves this place! Since then, she has introduced her mom to get her haircut here as well. I've since moved out to the Detroit area for work, but still come back to New Age for my haircut! read more

I've been going here since my freshman year of college. Growing up, my dad always cut my hair, since it was just a simple buzzcut. I've never ventured off to the traditional barber shops, so I barely even know how to describe the kind of haircut I want, let alone mess with whatever those numbers mean. Whenever I come in, the ladies immediately started speaking in Chinese with me, and knew exactly what I wanted. It was like I was right at home! A trip to New Age never takes longer than 20 minutes, unless there's a wait, which there often is. However, the wait is super short as the ladies really know what they're doing! Though my hair style is pretty basic, I've never had any problems, and they've always been accommodating to my requests for shorter hair. The prices have increased a little since I started coming here a couple of years ago, but $15 is still super cheap compared to those other salons. I know I'm not getting a super, high quality fashion haircut here. But I do know that I'll be getting a quick, quality, basic cut. I have been trusting New Age Salon with my hair for the past 15 years of my life and rarely came out of that place dissatisfied. The price is below average, and as I firmly believe, only asians can cut asian hair (a general but not absolute rule) The rating of New Age Salon really depends on which stylist you get. To June, I award 5 stars. She works on the left chair and is very, VERY fast, and very good. At times, you may get uneasy because of her speed, but let me assure you not to worry. Her sister in the middle chair, who is not nearly as fast, gets 4 stars. Generally, she does a decent job, but there have been times where I walk away wishing I had June. I rate the lady on the right chair 2 stars and always request to wait for the other two ladies even if she is open. May god have mercy on your hair if she ever works on you. There's a reason why the 3rd stylist always changes and is never permanent. read more

"Just too busy! Busy busy! Busy scissors, clippers, oh, hairdresser on fire!" Salon owner June and her colleagues are undoubtedly the fastest in town, decimating lines of bedraggled (mostly male) students 5 minutes at a time. Cordial and quick, they operate with a military consistency on repeat male customers who are unceremoniously shorn like sheep. Be sure to interject any requests before you sit down, because as soon as you do the hair will fly! They do seem to take more care with long hair and female clients (layering, coloring, etc.), and despite their haste, I've never seen anyone leave unhappy. I guess there aren't too many variations on a clipper cut. I bet they could do it blindfolded! I shave my own head, but my kids love "the Chinese ladies" (maybe for their mini-Dum Dum lollipops, but also because they don't belabor the process). So do, apparently, all the Asian students in town. It's been the same small, dingy, hair-strewn shop for decades, and even with nicer/newer Arcade and Campus barbers and Douglas J. and Aveda salons on either side of them, New Age keeps lining them up. They're not much for atmosphere, but if you like your first cut there, you'll probably like your 1000th! read more

This place is amazing. Come here if you care more about your hair than the environment you get your hair cut in. I came here after reading a previous review and went straight to June, the barber who works on the left most chair. She followed every single one of my requirements and I never had to repeat myself. She also has ample experience and creativity to make you hair look amazing. On top of it all, she is super fast and will get your hair cut in around 15 minutes. Do not be afraid if she takes big cuts, she will cut what she needs, not a bit more or less. I've been a loyal customer to Dessange and have paid 35 bucks per haircut, this place is 13 before tip. At Dessange, the haircuts took much longer, but I've always walked out of their slightly dissatisfied, as if something were a little off with the haircut, but I could never point it out. This never happened at New Age. I walked out of there fully satisfied. No fancy massage or hair wash though. Bottom line: Go to New Age, have June cut your hair, come out satisfied. read more

Love love LOVE this place. I'm a white girl with long, thick, wavy/curly hair. And they do a great job with it! First: you cannot. beat. the price/location/vibe combo. $16 for a women's cut, never an appointment needed, right on campus, walk in, cut, walk out-- BOOM. A great, cheap haircut in 20 minutes. Especially good if you need a cut often as I do. The women are really nice and friendly and definitely know their stuff. I love the wide range of cultures coming through the door and they have been in business for a long time with many regulars. Always a good sign. Jun usually does the best with my hair. The first time she cut it it brought out waves and curls I never had before! The second most recent time I went I got compliments on my haircut for MONTHS after. I just went again yesterday and am quite pleased. The only thing I would say to be careful of is if you're a lady and don't want bangs-- tell them! I have fine, abundant hair that is any stylist's nightmare. Except for June. The last time I was in I showed her pictures of things that I know my hair can't do, and told her why I like those styles. In about 20 minutes she gave me a dream hair-cut. (Which didn't look like the highly styled pictures -- it looks better than those -- and I like my cut for all the same reasons that I like the pictures I showed her.) Not only did my hair look nice, but somehow I got broad cheekbones and big eyes along the way. And all the gray is hidden. I can let it air-dry and finger-style it if I want. And I get compliments every day. You just go in there and wait your turn. I've tried the different stylists, and they are all very nice, but June has such a special touch with my hair that I finally got bold enough to ask for her even if another stylist was free first. I have been coming here since 1994, every 2 weeks like clock work, and I only let June cut my hair if at all possible. The other 2 ladies aren't bad but June's been cutting my hair for so long that I don't even have to say anything. I just sit down and I'm done in 10 mins tops. The place itself is not what you would consider "high class"...in fact I'll be honest in that it is a little messy...there's a lot of hair on the floor, a tiny waiting area, and the sink where they wash hair isn't the cleanest. But if you want the posh atmosphere, you can go somewhere else and spend $30+ on a hair cut. If you want a cheap, efficient hair cut, this is the place. read more

Really should have 2.5 stars, but rounding up to 3 gives it A-OK, and I don't feel like this was really A-OK. I asked for layers and the stylist gave it to me, but she didn't seem particularly careful in cutting my hair. I have never seen so much hair fall to the ground in so little time, and the way she was whacking at my head I was a leetle afraid she was going to whack off too much. I mean, she was literally whacking at my hair instead of carefully cutting the layers. It's probably my fault for expecting more when I only had to pay $16 before tip. Very experienced ladies who are very very good at cutting asian hair :) I wish I've thought about going to this place earlier, instead of of trying my luck at Aveda two doors down every time. It's definitely an affordable, student-friendly option. The cut was super quick, about 20 minutes, instead of the THREE hours at Aveda, and they did a much much better job in getting me the look I wanted. Sure, it was a dry cut (she sprayed my hair once in a while), and sure the decor is not as glamorous and shiny as other salons, but the ladies are friendly and they do a great job. Don't look at the one/two star reviews by those whiny (and cheap) Asian girls. They're here for the low price and they're not satisfied with the corresponding fair quality. I guess that's because China and Korea don't teach economics in high school and college for non-major students. It's a bit away from a nice place, a little bit messy and less decorated than average. Barbers are good but not great on styling fancy hair styles for you. They look not so professional because they're mostly housewives originally. But where could you find a convenient location only charging $13 and even wouldn't be unhappy if you are not tipping? Plus they open everyday like Meijer and Walmart. if you are a man/boy who don't care a lot about your hair style, especially a student with limited budget, this is the place for you. read more

I have long been looking for a place to cut my hair in Ann Arbor. I have long Asian hair and its really hard to find a place that can cut my hair type well. A few friends recommended I visit this shop, so I went in with a picture of what I wanted- long wispy layers with face framing pieces and I also showed and described to the lady there what I wanted. She said okay, she could do it. However the haircut ended up looking nothing like what I described or the photo. All my hair was roughly the same length, and she used a dull knife to cut my hair that pulled and gave me horrible split ends. She never even picked up scissors. I wanted a light wispy cut for summer and it ended up being a horrible block cut with jagged ends. I caution any girls looking for a decent cut, avoid the younger lady with bangs and glasses! Update: I ended up returning to the shop, and this time spoke to the owner. She said she would fix my hair, and she actually cut it with scissors (wow surprise!) and she fixed the cut. She actually gave me similar to the cut I wanted, and styled my hair too. If you go to this shop, ask for the owner! The young lady who cut my hair the first time really didn't know what she was doing, but the owner knows how to cut hair. read more
