We chose to get Doughnut Plant for National Doughnut Day. We ordered online and picked up at the location which was convenient! The doughnuts here are very good, especially the cake doughnuts. The cake doughnuts taste more like cake than doughnut, but they are delicious. The yeast doughnuts are good too, but not my favorite in NYC. The blueberry cake doughnut was one of our favorites along with the coffee cake doughnut and the Brooklyn blackout. They are flavorful and not dried out. The Brooklyn blackout is rich and chocolatey. The PB&J doughnut has the perfect ratio of peanut butter to jelly. The strawberry yeast was the least flavorful and not as good as the cake doughnuts. Came here on a pretty chilly day and it wasn't packed, which was really nice. There are about 6-7 seating areas that are really cute because the seats have little donuts on the inside. Most of the donuts are $3.75+ so they're definitely pricier than your normal donuts from Dunkin. What makes this place stand out is that the flavors are all so unique and artisanal. It's also nice that they have two different types of donuts to cater to everyone- one is a cake donut (denser and richer flavor) and a yeast donut (larger sized than the cake, but lighter and airy). We ordered the tres leches, carrot cake, chocolate, and pistachio donut. To drink we got the orange hot chocolate and just black coffee. My friend liked her tres leches donut but felt her orange hot chocolate was a little too bitter. Even the sweetness of the donut couldn't balance it out. The carrot cake donut was absolutely delicious and such a nice way to eat carrot cake on the go. It reminded me exactly of carrot cake in a donut form. And I could eat it with a cup of their black coffee all of the time. My boyfriend had the pistachio yeast donut. He was a little disappointed that it was a very subtle pistachio flavor and he expected it to have some sort of pistachio filling on the inside to make it worth its price point. My experience started out all wrong, when upon entering, I joined what I thought was the start of the line. Only one person was in front of me, but two guys were on the register. After standing there and deciding what I wanted, I figured I may be on the wrong side, and the line began on the opposite side. However, about one minute after I switched to the other side, the employee exclaims "the line begins on the right" and "next customer"...WTF; I stood there blatantly for several minutes, and he never said a word, now I have to wait for two or three other people that just joined the line? They finally get to me, and this cashier is much friendly-er, and I placed my order for a cappuccino and Crème brûlée (3.85). The donut is wrapped and placed into a huge bag, but the actual size of the donut is about 1/10 the size of the bag. I sit down and proceed to munch. However, $7.88 cents later, I wasn't very impressed with the donut. It was extremely sticky and the substance was all over my hands. The cappuccino was good, but maybe not worth the price tag either. *COVID takeout* To celebrate FINALLY getting my NY ID, I whisked away one of Doughnut Plant's Brooklyn Blackout doughnuts to enjoy at home with a cup of tea (read: several cups of tea!). First thing's first, this baby is rich! There's a lot going on, with a moist, chocolate cake doughnut that's been injected with cool, chocolate pudding. The whole thing gets dipped in a Valrhona chocolate glaze and topped with more chocolate cake crumbles. Phew! I had to break midway through to digest and get chocolate off the brain! And that's kind of the catch here. The cake doughnut? Excellent. The glaze? Superb. Not too stiff but not melting all over my fingers either. The chocolate pudding? So fun. But the chocolate cake crumbles? I don't get it. They added mess, not diversity of taste or texture. I would have preferred chopped nuts, chocolate shavings, chocolate chips...something that didn't feel like cake doughnut on top of my cake doughnut. Yesterday my co-workers and I ordered donuts from the Flatbush Doughnut Plant shop. I had the carrot cake and Brooklyn blackout donuts. My co-workers had the pistachio rose and crème brulee. They ranted and raved over them. Mine were both amazing as this was my first time having these donuts. I have never tasted a donut that taste like cake let alone them tasting as good as they did. I can't really speak for the location itself as I have only ordered from them. The creme brulee donut is very special but it doesn't feel as much like a donut rather than a pastry (does that make sense?) - in any case, it is a delicious treat! On the cake donut side, I love the Brooklyn Blackout - it has this chocolate pudding filling that is really tasty. For yeast donuts, my favorites are coconut (so fresh!) and PB&J (nostalgic!). Nestled on a corner on Flatbush is Doughnut Plant. It is a bit of a "gourmet" doughnut shop, this is no big chain of mass production. They have one each of their doughnuts on display in a case as you order, rather than just a printed menu with prices. I often stop here with friends after bike races in Prospect Park for a doughnut and espresso. The doughnuts are very good and the coffee and espresso is as well. You may wonder how guys can enjoy DP as much as girls. But honestly, I've been in DPs in both Manhattan and Brooklyn and the guys love getting DP too. I can't blame them. DP is just... that... good. If you haven't had a DP lately, then let's go and do DP together soon, because you need it (even if you don't know it yet) and I need it too. What to get: Pretty much every donut they make is paradise. But if you had to choose: Well you really can't go wrong. But if I was holding a f***ing gun to your head m***erf***er: Whoa... wait a... I've now visited the DP on Grand St in Manhattan (about 10 times) and this one in Brooklyn (twice) and both have excellent service, high prices, and the best doughnuts imaginable. If I had to pick one, I'd go with Grand just because it's the original. But they're both equally fantastic and perfectly located, although parking is a little tricky around the Brooklyn location because it's at such a crazy-busy intersection in the heart of downtown Bklyn. The last time I was here, I brought a guy and a girl. It was just us 2 guys and 1 girl. It was an awesome DP experience. Doughnut Plant aren't just the best Doughnuts/Donuts in New York City. Although Dun-Well, Dough and Moe Dough's will all give them a run for their proverbial money. But they may just be the best donuts you will ever taste, anywhere. They're certainly all the way up there with the very best, and they have an advantage, which is that they are so innovative and original. They are simply unlike any other doughy concoction you will ever taste anywhere. DP is gourmet and fancy, and yet they're just donuts. The Creme Brulée and Trés Léchés (overusing accent on purpose) are my faves, and must be tried to be believed, but the Coconut is not far off. The first time I did DP I actually filmed it. I mean, anyone doing this DP for the first time, should capture it on film. It's just that good. Unfortunately the camera phone was stolen, otherwise I'd have attached my "first DP" footage to this review. OK, they're priced a little higher than donuts should be, closer to $3 each than $1 each, but that can be said about many of the top NYC donut places, and whereas those are just delicious and often huge, DP is so original and unusual that it almost, very nearly, very nearly almost deserves that lofty price tag. So yes, DPs can be expensive. But it's so worth it. Ask anyone who is a DP regular. What makes them so different? It's hard to say. The dough is different. The tastes are so unusual. The sizes are not huge, but every bite is heaven. Perhaps most uniquely, they're filled with some sort of goo. Often a creamy goo, that isn't so much a filling, but a hidden element of a perfect dough. Like a little goo cavern, an underwater river running through the very heart of the donut. Unexpected and delightful. Filled with taste. Pure doughnut bliss. And in my opinion, Doughnut Plant is for adults, not kids. Do not teach your kids to enjoy DP. It's really bad for them. And it's so good it can become addictive. Honestly I think it should be illegal to get kids addicted to DP if it isn't already. And your wives and husbands? I really don't think you want to be introducing them to DP. They might love it too much and you might "lose them" to their new-found DP addiction. And that goes for mothers and fathers too. If you show your Mama DP, then first of all, it's just not right. Secondly, what if she loves it as much as you do? So then your mother is a DP addict? Are you going to admit that to your friends? Are you going to be able to live with yourself knowing that you were the one that introduced her to DP? Why the rest of the country hasn't fastened on to whatever DP are doing and made it a nationwide phenomenon, I have no idea. I'm sure that within 10 years there'll be a Doughnut Plant or a Doughnut Plant rip-off in every major town and within 20 years, in every gas station and Walmart a la Dunkin and Krispy Kreme. And I'm sure they won't be nearly as good or fresh as these. But for now, you can only get this here. So do the right thing. Get your arse to New York City and get DP'd. Well you know what I mean. Get down here and try these remarkable donuts. I sh** you not when I say these are the best I've ever had. I'm not sure who in their right mind would not want some DP action, so come and see for yourself why DP is the most beloved and delicious and exciting thing you can get in New York City. And when I say DP I don't mean Danica Patrick, although I'm sure she'd love DP, and I'm sure I'd love showing her DP. In fact, I hope to do exactly that someday. Really not much more needs to be said about Doughnut plant - arguably the first ones who ushered in this whole gourmet/artisanal doughnut craze. This location is the one I frequent the most because I live closeby. Very close to Barclay's Center and the Atlantic Terminal. The place has all the flavors I've grown to love - like the creme brulee, tres leches, and the PB&J doughnut. However, none of these doughnuts are made at the site - they are actually shuttled back and forth via a van from their LES site. There's an ever-so-slight difference in freshness because of that, but it's mostly negligible. The place has some small triangular shaped tables along the edge of the store - you would think those tiny tables would discourage people from working there, but invariably you'll see people on their laptops camped out there *shrugs*. One thing I like about Doughnut Plant is that they accept Level Up, where you can accrue rewards - useful for someone like me who probably eats more doughnuts than I should haha. Pro tip: if you happen to get there right before closing time, sometimes the employees will be nice and surprise you by packing an extra doughnut in your bag. read more

Large and tasty doughnuts! These bad boys are bigger than your average bagel. And not too airy meaning they nourish pretty well. The doughnut display is very nice and modern. They claim to be the inventor of the creme brulee doughnut so it's gotta be good. I ate a passion fruit donut which was swirled like a rose. I am indescribably happy (and concerned for my triglycerides) that Doughnut Plant is now one of the closest sources of food to my home. Some of the other purveyors in the city give them a run in terms of yeast doughnuts, but no one touches DP when it comes to a) cake doughnuts, and b) anything in the jelly-doughnut family, in any of its variations (both the PB & J and the PB & banana are simply phenomenal). I enjoyed all of the holiday special flavors -- gingerbread I'd say was my favorite out of the group. Panettone was good but not quite at the same level, maybe a bit dry as another reviewer stated, which is rare for a DP cake doughnut. They also did a magnificent job decorating the inside of the shop, especially the design touches like the various doughnut tiles. Coffee is strong as well. The only thing keeping it from five stars are some recently-opened-type problems, which will hopefully be corrected. The primary problem is created by having two doors on either end of the counter, so people converge on the center creating a free-for-all at the registers. There are confusing signs saying "line starts here" and so forth, but none of the usual helpful physical line demarcations to keep control. It's complicated by the fact that the doughnut case, where you can see all the options, is in the opposite direction from where the line is supposed to start, so if you're in line, you can't see anything. Plus, the coffee bar is on the opposite side from where you're supposed to pick up. So there are lots of people crossing back and forth all the time, dragging children...a bit of a mess, and right now it's an unpleasant experience if there are more than a couple customers. Once everything gets worked out, though, I'm confident the order process will be worthy of the end result (the best doughnuts in the city!) read more

Was in Brooklyn visiting some family, walking around one morning and saw there was a Doughnut Plant shop. I've heard about this place, quite popular and I've seen them on TV etc, so we decided to grab a few donuts for a snack. A lot of selections to choose from so we decided to try their holiday donut selections and got the Marzipan Donut and Chanukah Blackberry Jam Donut. If you like almond paste, get the Marizipan....it was tasty! The Chanukah donut sounded good too and the blackberry jam inside was yummy. Both were quite delicious, freshly made, sweet but a little on the pricey side for a donut. Forgot to take a photo of the actual donut because we just couldn't wait and just chomped it up! Visiting this location of Doughnut Plant means that I have officially visited all locations in New York City! It is merely a 3 block off-track radius from Atlantic Terminal - LIRR station but totally worth the detour before boarding. I am super guilty of stuffing my face with doughnuts from here. If you were ever around seeing someone walking out of here holding a large coffee cup with one hand and holding a doughnut with the other hand and aggressively devouring it - that girl was probably me. As a recent convert to a doughnut lover, I was hesitant but eventually sold when I found out that the flavors are mostly fruity! Anyone who likes fruity flavors or fruit-forward food like me will definitely find a doughnut you will love here! I personally like to go with yeast donuts because I love the chewiness of it. Some of my favorite seasonal ones in the past were Lavender Flower and the Rosemary Pineapple. Creme Brulee donut is amazing! They are smaller in size but the cream custard in the middle oozes out every bite while the sugar layer on top gives it a perfect sweet finish. October specials includes the Pumpkin, Apple Cinnamon, and Candy Corn (which is really shaped like one!). Pumpkin was a delight to have. You know how you get me to visit a Doughnut Plant? Tell me it exists and is somewhere within a half hour of me. While wandering through Brooklyn one day I came across this Doughnut Plant. Not only did it have amazing treats that I love, it's also housed at the base of a very unusual triangular building in an island in downtown Brooklyn. Its unique, classic New York City style look really drew me in (oh, and the doughnuts too of course!). This Doughnut Plant is always jam packed (I've passed it three different times and each time there was a line). When you enter there is seating on the left with cute doughnut inspired designs on tiles and on the right is where you order. The day I went I sampled two doughnuts I had never had before (saving some for later because really, you need to savor this stuff!). COFFEE CAKE This is one of their "Cake Doughnuts" with a very cake like texture. It's lighter than their yeast doughnuts but moist so don't worry about it falling apart. I am a huge fan of coffee cake so this was a no brainer. The flavor was awesome. It was like a light version of every coffee cake I had ever had (which tend to be heavier). The cinnamon and sugar flavors were just right and didn't overwhelm the flavor of the doughnut itself. I'd get this one again in a heartbeat. BROOKLYN BLACKOUT This doughnut tasted like light, cakey chocolate incarnate. It was absolutely delicious and leaned towards a dark chocolate flavor where you can really taste the cocoa. I'm less of a chocolate fan than my girlfriend but I really liked it and would gladly have it again. There is a bathroom at this branch complete with old metal ceilings (something they pride themselves on) and the staff was nice. I picked up a couple donuts to try - one yeast and one cake. I'm sorry to say that I did not like the Chocolate Chip Cake doughnut at all!! Meh! Were those chopped walnuts inside? Like a chocolate chip walnut cookie? I think that should have been stated somewhere... did I miss that note? What if I were allergic to nuts? Ugh, as it happens I just don't like walnuts in my cookies or cake or doughnuts. Blah. I'm a bit annoyed actually that I spent $3.50 on that one. There was a line to order and luckily for me, there was also a bathroom but you have to purchase something- great, because I was going to anyway! I kept starring at that flavor and when I got to the counter, that was all I thought of so we got a banana donut to share. I was really hoping for some banana filling in the donut but I think the flavor comes through nicely from the doughnut itself. The blueberry and pumpkin cake donuts were so moist, pillow like, and literally melted in your mouth! The flavors were spot on and I couldn't get enough! The blueberry had fruit in the dough and mixed into the frosting which literally made it! I was a little disappointed in the size of the Creme brûlée donut. When I find this flavor I always have to get it, but for some reason they have all fallen short to DC Donuts one. Either way, this did have a wonderful vanilla custard filling and the burnt sugar taste almost added a marshmallow flavor to it. It was really good minus the size. Now the PB&J, another staple that I always seek out and order. I was excited that it was square and filled all the way around! It allowed for jelly in every bite which was FANTASTIC! The other amazing thing, it had a PB frosting and then dipped in peanuts which added that crunch factor. Words can't even explain how freaking good this was! Giving this a 2 because I only tried the matcha green tea donut and service was good. Maybe the other donuts are good. This green tea matcha donut itself was horrible. I couldn't pinpoint what was so off putting until halfway through. It reeked of a smell like fish?? Ick. Will not be back. read more

This location, like all locations are delicious with really nice counter people. I am warning all who read this review.... this is an additive place with flavors for all tastes. My mother gets really mad if I come home and forget to bring her a creme brulee donut to Virginia. Like food wars angry. I've tried to many to name but I will give you my top three choices.... For the plain jane- Vanilla Bean yeast donut (yes, there is a cake version) Complex childhood throwback- peanut butter and jam (they make and sell both the peanut butter and the jam) And finally... fancy pants/bourgeois one- creme brulee (the top is finished with a hand torch, like a real one from the ramekin). Always have room for Doughnut Plant donuts when I'm in the area. Thick round or square donuts with changing flavors depending on the season. My most recent visit was for the Peanut Butter and Jam filled donut ($3ish) and a ginger ale ($2ish). Filling is good and an overall hearty pastry - though I feel like it wasn't as fresh as I've had in the city. Ginger ale is fine (coffee didn't look tempting). Not much seating in this establishment, though turnover is fairly quick if you are patient enough. I think time of day matters here. Both times I visited was in the evening and the selection was minimal. Recommend coming early for the best available. read more

I tried the tres leches and the Peanut Butter and Banana Cream donut. The tres leches was a small doughnut (much smaller than I expected) and more like a cake consistency. I thought it was good but not great. It wasn't overly sweet as well. The peanut butter and banana Cream was delicious! I LOVE peanut butter and the banana cream was a perfect balance. These donuts are definitely much lighter than DOUGH. If you want a doughnut without the fullness and sugar high feeling afterwards, this is the spot. First visit to Doughnut Plant, and have easily decided that EVERYONE needs to go. My brother has been trying to convince me to go for the longest, and now that i went without him will be revealed in this review(whoops). These donuts, are so unlike any that you have previously had before. Despite the many outrageous flavors available, I played it safe going with the blueberry that I shared, and a mint tea (this is about the donuts but this was excellent too). Every little bit of it, to the smallest bite, you got an immense blueberry and glazed lemon cake like flavor. Inside was like biting into a blueberry, but the breading is perfect, and you get a hint of some herb in there that I can't put my finger on. I really want to like this place. I really do...but it just wasn't that great of an experience for me. Given, we did come during dinner time so maybe the donuts weren't as fresh but still... it should still be good somewhat. Boyfriend and I got the creme brûlée donut and the vanilla bean blackberry donut. The creme brûlée donut's filling was not even. My boyfriend and I split half and he got all the creamy goodness while I got nuttttinnnn. We didn't get to experience the creme brûlée ness of the donut. The blackberry donut was delicious BUT AGAIN, stingy with the filling. The filling was sooo good. Wish we had more of it. I also wish it was warmed up a bit. When we got it it was a bit dry. Great service & creative and delicious doughnuts. Special shoutout to the guy with the turquoise locs that helped me today, as I was a first time customer. Excellent customer service. The Black & White doughnut is good and sweet. It is definitely a cake doughnut- nice and fluffy and moist. They also threw in a free creme brûlée doughnut for me to try! Thanks! My gf liked it - comes with creme on the inside (no pics this time). I wasn't a fan of the brûlée on top, but I'd try it again on another day when I could get them in the morning. Freshly baked and quite an extensive variety/hodgepodge; there is truly something for everyone here. Should you prefer a denser donut (a la Entenmann's and such); try their "cake" category of donuts. Alternatively, should you long for the type of flakey, light and almost chewy donut that I was raised on and personally prefer and love, try a donut from their "yeast" category. We tried an assortment of three: matcha green tea, vanilla bean yeast and apple cinnamon yeast. Each was heavenly! I'm all for any artisanal food/ experience (and should add that I agree that you do get what you pay for when it comes to quality of food) but I still found the prices a tad high, thus one star short of perfection. read more
