A friend had been here and raved about the thick crust pizza, so we turned up 45 minutes before close. We got three pizzas, one each, and shared. Pies are about 10" in diameter, enough for one person plus leftovers; maybe not enough for two. We got the Garden of the Gods; Help Me Cheeses; and Lemon Capri (sliced lemon, olive oil, ricotta). The thick crust is basically focaccia and it's delicious; you also get the crisped cheese on the edges that you do with Detroit. The Garden of the Gods was also good (tomatoes, green pepper, onions, mushrooms) as was the 3-cheese, which my friend raved about. Service was friendly and they didn't throw us out as closing approached, which we appreciated. We were inside and it was pretty quiet as it was after 9pm. I see they bill themselves as a sports bar; guess I didn't realize, which for me is a good thing. Anyway, pizza is delicous, priced reasonably, and they have 5 vegetarian specialty pizzas plus plain cheese, so I'll definitely be adding this to my downtown restaurant rotation. Good pizza and great service! It's very casual and great for groups. They do have a "backyard" area that was pretty decked out. We went on a Friday night; there was a band playing and a $10 cover for the backyard. Eating in the restaurant did not have a cover, though. They have Detroit and New Haven Style pizzas. I thought they were very good. I wouldn't rant and rave, but it is a very nice addition to downtown Wheaton and we will likely be back! read more

Not ready for prime-time. Nice atmosphere, good space, our waitress was friendly. But the Detroit style pizza was burnt and crust was inedible. Someone from the cook staff should've never let it come out to the table. We ordered a cheese and a bbq Detroit style. The bbq was burnt worse than the cheese. Also, really weird they made us stand by the front door for about 7 minutes because the wait staff was busy... there were 5 open tables. After the 7 minutes, they sat us at one of the open tables. This place is so mid, I know they're relatively new but I don't really think that has anything to do with it. For one pizza and two drinks being $46 I would expect that all aspects are going to taste phenomenal. The pizza was just not good in comparison to other places around here and the cocktails were overly sweet and over priced. The ambiance is essentially having to yell at the person sitting across from you to hear because the children everywhere screaming and the amount of people in the space was just insane. I appreciate that the backyard part is 16+ but at that point I feel like it should be 18+, if you're going to offer something like that, it seems like it should be adults only. Also, we ordered an appetizer that never came which was disappointing. I was really excited for this place to open but between charging overpriced covers for events and the food being subpar and expensive for what it is, I wouldn't return. read more

The latest offering from Eric Schlickman, owner of 302 Wheaton, is a great addition to downtown Wheaton. Situated on Front Street north of the train tracks, the restaurant is modern, spacious and comfortable with a nice bar area and plenty of TV screens for watching a game. Nice selection of both thick and thin crust pizzas with plenty of different toppings. The regular and gluten free Detroit style crusts were both done to perfection, and the hot honey pepperoni pizza and arugula/prosciutto/goat cheese pizza were both very tasty. Behind the restaurant is "The Backyard", a wonderful bar/music space with arched ceilings and a sky light that is the perfect place to have a drink and enjoy live music after dinner. read more

In theory this place should be awesome, but not a family friendly establishment. Kids only welcome in the front section but not in the back where there is games, live music, and garden seating. Very strange rule when the vast majority of their clients will be families. One of pizzas came out raw, they had to make a new one and it wasn't done until we were checking out. We went in for lunch a couple Saturdays ago. For starters, the vibe is chill, decor is nice and the hostess was friendly. But that's where my compliments end. We ordered a basic thin crust pizza and a couple drinks after sitting at the bar for close to 15 minutes. There was a middle aged woman and a younger woman sitting at the end of the bar, talking to the bartender, so we thought he was serving other customers. Cool. But nope, he was speaking with other employees instead of taking our drink and food order. And we sat there sheepishly trying to decide if we should just walk out. When our drinks came (we ordered off their drink menu and got the same thing), they tasted different. Not like the same beverage at all. His tasted strong of alcohol and mine was too sweet and syrupy. After giving us our drinks, he went right back to talking with the women at the end of the bar. When our pizza arrived, it was undercooked and actually doughy. I ate most of my first piece and asked my husband what he thought of the pizza. He wasn't overwhelmed either. I'd compare it to Dominoes honestly. They boxed our leftovers, but my husband put it in the trash when we left the restaurant. He knew we wouldn't eat it again. This place has a TON of potential but sadly we won't be back. Too many choices in the area to put up with mediocre pizza and poor service. read more

The only thing I would note is that the flavor of the thick crust was fantastic, but it bubbles up a bit and all of the cheese falls to the sides, we still loved it though, as well as the classic pan pizza. Tried this place recently - needed a quick lunch close to work. I ordered the GOAT pizza - I am a fan of prosciutto, and I asked for the arugula to be removed which they did. The dough itself was interesting and tasty, the prosciutto and goat cheese were a good mix of tastiness in my mouth. the sauce that was on top of the pizza -not sure what it was exactly - left a lot to be desired. It was too thick, messy and didn't love the taste. would have likely enjoyed my pizza much more if that wasn't there. the place seemed nice and clean, spacious - I had take out but overall it seemed like a reasonable dining accommodation. The pricing was a little high - almost $20 for a pizza. It also took a little longer than I had expected which was frustrated. Parking was a challenge as well. Despite my frustrations would give it another shot and try other stuff. read more

Pizza was great and we love the opportunity/option to have a dinner that is not surrounded by children running around as is common with most other family friendly places in Wheaton. The downside is the acoustics of The Backyard. I have been there 3 times and every time the live music is way too loud. It is impossible to have a conversation with people sitting next to to you. The space offers a great atmosphere to hang out and drink, but not when there is live music. For some reason, you can hear the instruments (which are also too loud), but the vocals are lost because of them being drowned out. Come up with a solution to the deep base, loud music and poor acoustics, and this place would be on par for people who want to come and hang out every weekend. We absolutely love the idea of live music, but we want to enjoy it as well as the people we are there to visit with. read more

So I set up a reservation and was taken almost 20 minutes after the reservation time even though plenty of tables were open, had I shown up late I would've lost the reservation we got seated at a very small table where we kept getting knocked into, people were standing by us. In the main aisle I asked to move to one next to me, they said they "couldn't do it because they had a waitlist". that table set empty for the remainder of the evening. That was just to start off. We got the loaded fries which came ice cold the sprite tasted completely horrible. The pizza I don't even want to get started on that. There was no sauce on it completely burnt tasted like crap. Couldn't even eat it. The best thing was the Caesar salad. The waitress was nonexistent and I will never go back here. While it took a bit for this restaurant to get off their feet and to become comfortable with serving during peak times, I think they've gotten into a good groove. Being able to book musicians for guests to regularly paired with providing fast service has made them successful. Not to mention their pepperoni & honey pizza is delicious-- but beware-- the honey is hotter than it was when they first started! For clarity, we all tried both the Detroit and supposed New Haven and kept them simple (cheese). I get it, some rich people want a spot in Wheaton to look and feel cool and give it the menu names of popular pizza styles. If you can't execute on food, just be a cool bar and change your name. I guess the name is fitting though as it really is just dough and not pizza. Go to Nemec or Pie Life if you really want pizza that's true to style. read more

We went for trivia night on a Wednesday, which has a great Pitcher and Pizza Deal you can't beat. Sausage Pepper and Spicy Pepperoni are my go-to (Detroit Style in Winter of Course!). Trivia was challenging, as the OWNER prides himself in doing personally. I've been here 3 times, the pizza is solid an unique, I really like it. I would be willing to give a higher rating, if I see changes. So here is my experience. I went the other night with my wife and teenage kid. Obviously they are a pizza place, so that was exciting for my kid and I, because we love pizza. The 2 options they have is Detroit style and what they call New Haven. So due to Portnoy's One Bite pizza reviews, New Haven is a popular thing for people to want to recreate. I have actually had real New Haven, so I am expecting a crisp thin cut pizza with a tangy sauce and browned cheese. What I got looked like a microwaved frozen Digornos. The dough was doughy and chewy. The cheese and sauce combo was entirely too garlicky. Literally did not kiss my wife for 24 hours due to our garlic breath. The cheese was too heavy and not cooked enough. This was the complete opposite of a New Haven style. The really bad thing is...just a couple of doors down there is Billy Bricks and they advertise New Haven. Theirs is not really New Haven, but it miles closer than this one. If Portnoy came in, he would put this in the 6.2 area, but advertising it as New Haven, he might give it a 3.6. It was really garbage. Now, if they had not advertised it like they know what New Haven is, then the score would have been higher. Not 5 stars, still too garlicky, but maybe better. Sell the pizza as your style, and there is an excuse for what I was fed. My wife asked why I was so upset. I asked her, what if you came home and asked for Chicago deep dish and I brought you home a pizza puff? That is my comparison. The Detroit was ok. Better than fast food Jets pizza. I still think their dough is too chewy though. The edges had that burnt cheese that you want and the thickness. However, traditional Detroit is an airy dough, so even though it's as thick as a corn fed southern girl, it's a light and enjoyable pizza that makes you leave not feeling heavy. This dough they use is chewy and thick, but heavy. We had this with pepperoni. The waiter suggested one with the Hot Honey, but I have to say, can we get away from this? It's a gross fad that restaurants are doing now. Just stop. Staff was pretty good. Young, but that's perfectly ok. Actually the only reason I gave it 2 stars is because of those kids....well and the red coke cups. That is pizza place nostalgia right there. We went a few weeks after the opening and I am just now writing this. Reality is, I don't want to dump on a business. I was hoping to log on today and see they have 5 stars and are doing fine. However, I came on and they have 3 stars. I hope they are paying attention to these. They have one of the most creative settings with the backyard band area in the back. The food is rough though and I cannot get past the fact that they are flat out lying to their customers about serving New Haven. If you are wondering if I complained, the answer is no. First off these kids were doing a good job and seemed stressed, this may be due to the female that looked to be a manager or owner. Let me start by saying: this place is a wonderful addition to Wheaton. The venue is beautiful, the live music creates a great vibe, and the event space architecture alone is worth stopping in for. This was our second visit. Our first? Absolutely wow-worthy. We ordered the Hot Honey pizza on New Haven-style crust, expecting something decent--and were instead blown away. Easily one of the best pizzas we'd had in a long time. Which is why we came back, excited to relive that experience. Unfortunately, it just wasn't the same. The dough had noticeably changed, and we later learned from one of the owners that the recipe was adjusted based on customer feedback. It's no longer New Haven-style, and in our opinion, it's lost what made it stand out. The crisp edge, the character--it's just... gone. To the owner's credit, he came by our table, unprompted, sensing our reaction, and took the time to explain the change. That kind of openness and engagement is rare, and it's clear the team here really does care about their guests. We'll be back for the music and the atmosphere, and we'll keep an eye on the menu. But we'll definitely be crossing our fingers for the return of that original crust magic. read more

Unfortunately have to agree with a lot of the reviews here. We so badly wanted the food to be good, because the concept of the restaurant is great and we love the owner and his businesses, but whoever is actually cooking or creating the menu should be seriously reconsidered for employment. We tried the caprese salad appetizer, chicken wings, a Caesar salad, and ordered one slice of pepperoni pizza for our son. Truly, none of it was good and there were issues with each item. The caprese salad came out in a bowl of gelatinous olive oil. The croutons on the Caesar salad were so stale we couldn't bite through - even a knife could not cut through them. The wings were giving me major chicken anxiety, and just lacked flavor. The pizza...I was dumbfounded at what we were served knowing the entire restaurant is supposed to specialize in pizza. Again, just no flavor but to call either of these pies Detroit or New Haven style is sadly an insult to both genres. It's very mediocre, run of the mill pizza you'd think you bought in the freezer section at the grocery store. Really, really hope the food improves as we want to see this place succeed! read more
