I walked in, and the entire room seemed to stop. People turned and stared. I smiled at a few of them, hoping to break the tension, but they just kept staring. I sat down at the bar and waited quietly -- five, maybe ten minutes. I had no problem being patient as I understand bartenders can get busy. But while I sat there, I watched her serve others, chat with regulars, and even tell one that she'd just given him some fresh drinks. She continued cleaning her bar but never once acknowledged me. Not even a "Hi" or "I'll be right with you." Then she poured herself a Red Bull into her personal cup, walked right past me, and struck up a friendly conversation with the man next to me -- loud and casual -- asking if he was "golfing this weekend." That made it clear: she wasn't going to serve me. As a BLACK veteran, that moment hit hard. This bar, with all its patriotic décor, made it clear that their version of "supporting the troops" doesn't include people like me. I didn't serve my country to protect ignorance or racism -- especially not from those who wrap themselves in the flag while looking down on others. This place can take their support and shove it where the sun doesn't shine.

The only way to get in is on special occasions so inquire within or on the Sly Fox website. The staff were so wonderful and kind really catering to our every need. We started with Infused water and mimosas. The Raspberry mimosa was sweet and bubbly with the perfect amount of raspberry sorbet. The food was beautifully displayed in a buffet style. Such a great variety. Fresh fruit of all kinds, french toast, waffles and chicken, biscuits and gravy, bacon, sausage , scrabbled eggs, quiche, house potatoes, deviled eggs, and a charcuterie board . On the sweet side they had mini cinnamon rolls, danish, brownies, cookies and cupcakes with the galentine theme. They had chocolate and chocolate covered strawberries with pretty pink food grade glitter. Plenty to choose from and plenty to eat. We loved it. In order to get into the speakeasy it is tickets only. We are looking on their website for the special events. Can't wait to see what they do for another event style. This time is was a Galentine Brunch.

Access to the speakeasy is limited only through events held by the facility or booking private events. It's available for rental for company holiday parties, wedding receptions, engagement parties, birthdays, graduations, bridal showers, baby showers.. the opportunities seem endless! Who knows, maybe even a place to hold a small continuing education conference?? We attended the Galentine's Day brunch buffet. Tickets must be purchased ahead of time either in person or over the phone. It is a cozy, comfy space to dine and have drinks in a relaxed classy beautifully decorated establishment. The interior design emanates speakeasy. Every detail of design was carefully curated with the utmost intention. Staff was fantastic. Even though it was a brunch buffet, staff were attentive, friendly and frequently checked on all tables to address any needs or questions. The lovely staff were genuinely happy to take photos for us without any prompting. The flow of the buffet was perfect, and the food presentation was delightfully charming! There was a photo back drop available and the decor was so festive, and classy yet simple. The decor wasn't over the top , it was just the right amount of decorations to add pizzazz and celebrate with festive spirit. We all had a very enjoyable time celebrating Galentine's day! It was a wonderful event in an equally wonderful space. The music was on point, as well as the volume level. It was loud enough to enjoy the music, yet low enough that you could hold a conversation without screaming to hear each other. It was very peaceful and even if you don't choose a booth, the tables on the opposite side of the bar do provide some privacy due to the small partitions. The variety of food offered was just right (not overwhelmingly too many options and not too little options) and the food was tasty. It was an excellent first impression that left me excited to await what other fun events they will hold in the future.

Each time I drive south on Kempsville Road I have tried to locate it but failed. Today after visiting my favorite ice cream spot I decided on an early dinner and set my GPS for the restaurant's address. To my surprise it was extremely visible, sitting right at the entrance to Kemps River Crossing Shopping Center. Turn into the entrance from Kempsville Road and you'll see it sitting directly on the right. It was early. So we were able to immediately get a comfortable table and extremely prompt service. Our server remembered all my special needs. She answered my fiend's questions about her preferred wine choice. Our drinks were served very quickly. The menu was extremely interesting. There were different sections for differing tastes. The Lunch/Dinner Menu has sections for Sandwiches, Soups & Salads, Small Plates, Signature Burgers, Tavern Pizza & European Comfort Foods. The latter was where my interest lay. It was a really hard choice since I could easily have ordered many of the dishes on the menu. How could I choose between the British, German & Irish entrees? After much agonizing I finally chose German. My Jägerschnitzel, a German classic, consisted of hand-flattened pork loin fried and topped with traditional onion and mushroom gravy. It was served with kraut, warm potato salad, and green beans. The large portions were perfectly prepared. I was pleased with the choice. My friend ordered the other dish I had considered: Magners® Corned Beef & Beer Braised Cabbage which consisted of Magners® cider marinated USDA corned beef brisket, slow-cooked and thinly sliced in house, paired with braised cabbage and bacon, chive whipped potatoes, and whole carrots. This will be my choice the next time I visit. The food came very quickly. In fact, too quick. I like a little time to linger over my cocktail before the food arrives. I've now learned that next time I'll wait a little longer to give the server my order. Park Lane Tavern exuded the air of a happy place. I'm not quite sure how to describe it. It's a cross between a restaurant, tavern or very large comfortable diner. The closest restaurant I've found to this was a large cozy similar type establishment on the Jersey Shore, which was obviously a hangout for locals in the off season. The only thing missing at Park Lane was their roaring fire. But Park Lane has the better menu choices. There are distinctively different sections. We were in a section that consisted of regular tables and chairs, which is ideal for those of us with bad backs and titanium knees. :). But there were no televisions in the area. There were sections of high top tables, booths and large inviting looking bars. Televisions showing sports were visible in most sections. I'd like to try one of the different sections closer to the bar rather than to be immediately taken to the more comfortable section, obviously their section in which to seat people my age.:) After dinner I did a little research on the tavern. The establishment was designed to feature the elements of a European Tavern or Pub. It has succeeded well in replicating that feel. It offers the best of both American and European cuisine. The group, which also has Taverns in Hampton & Fredericksburg, features unique beverage offering with an extensive selection of draughts from around the world. In my opinion they have completely succeeded in their goal of providing atmosphere, design, cuisine and comfort. I can't wait to return and try the Corned Beef & Cabbage.

I didn't frequent Peabody's since I have never been a person who loves dancing or DJs. Also, I was outside of Peabody's target demographic of 18-24 year-olds. This was during my "bitter chick rock" phase that still rears its head now and then, and one of my favorite bitter chick bands was L7! I saw their show at Peabody's on April 15, 1997. It was a great venue for this raw, bitter, loud band with a house packed and standing room only of fans trying their best to make a mosh pit. I guess Hole was my second favorite bitter chick band. Back to the L7 show. Classified as grunge, punk, and metal, I think L7 is more chick punk. Their guitarist was unavailable this night, and they replaced her with a local Va Beach chick guitarist who did a great job. The locals recognized her, I didn't. Smoking was allowed inside, and this audience was pretty aggressive for the times, with a lot of college aged guys wearing backwards baseball caps. That's fine, until the guys use their ballcaps as weapons to poke me in the forehead and face to try to keep me out of their mosh pit making range. The goal of the audience was to get to stage front. The audience even resorted to using cigarette lighters to burn each others clothes. Who does this? This show was during "The Beauty Process" tour and the setlist was great with songs from previous CDs including "L7" and other previous music. Par for the course, during "Cat-O-Nine Tails," a guy in leather bondage was brought on stage and then whipped with a whip by Donita, the lead singer. I'm confident this was just a show, and the poor guy wasn't hurt. "The Masses are Asses" is another L7 tune I like. Why no fifth star? The bouncers were interesting. They waited for patrons to make their way to the stage and for the most part, escorted the patron to the door - kicking nearly each one out. The crowd was "elbow to elbow" making it clear it was difficult to just take an overly rowdy and rough patron from the center of the crowd to kick them out. Still, the bouncers were sophomoric, and should have managed the crowd better. I'm happy to have seen L7, I'm happy my party were hurt, and I'm happy Peabody's provided a sizeable venue for an alternative show in the late 90s!

I think this time was even better! We arrived around 230 on a Saturday, lucky for us happy hour started at 3 and we had a 30 minute wait for 6 people. Literally perfect timing because no one was waiting before us and about 10-20 minutes later the waiting area became packed for that 3 o clock happy hour. Side note: happy hour is from 3-7, 7 days a week! The service was phenomenal, the whole staff was so nice and accommodating. While we waited for our table, we were able to order a cocktail from one of the waitresses. We also had a baby with a stroller and they made sure we had plenty of room once we were seated at our table. The food was amazing, I'm a fan of cooked oyster but i decided to be a little spontaneous and try them raw. I was pleasantly surprised at how fresh and clean tasting these oysters were. It reminded me of eating sashimi. My wife and father in law had the lobster rolls, they both loved them! My son had the double cheeseburger from the happy hour menu, literally cannot beat this deal. $6 double cheeseburger with fries on the boardwalk is unimaginable lol. I had the Nashville hot chicken, which was good but maybe could've used a little more flavor. But the quality of the sandwich as a whole was spot on. I really don't have any complaints, this was the highlight of our day. My in laws live in Wisconsin but they travel a bunch and they said that these oysters were some of the best they had ever had. They would never see 1$ oysters where they live, so I'm glad we were able to come here and create this memory together. If you've ever debated whether taking the trip to the strip is worth it, it is! Definitely check this place out!
