We found this Mexican restaurant in a small town near Middletown while searching on an app for something different. From the outside, it looked like a place that has been around for many years. It's not falling apart, but it definitely feels a bit outdated and like it hasn't been updated in a long time. When we walked in, it was almost empty. There was only one waiter and just one table for four or five people seated. No one else was there, so at first I thought, "uh oh, this might not be good." Surprisingly, the food was actually very good. I ordered the steak fajitas, and compared to many Mexican restaurants, they were using real pieces of meat instead of the cheap cuts you sometimes get. The meat was tender and flavorful. My companion ordered another Mexican dish with the same type of beef, and it was also good. So on the food side, it was a pleasant surprise. The service was fine, but very quiet and a bit dull. The waiter didn't have much energy, almost like he was tired or not very engaged. The place itself also lacked atmosphere. The typical slow Mexican music was playing, nothing lively, and the restaurant just felt empty and without much energy. In the end, the food was good and the service was okay, but the overall vibe felt flat. Had the beef tamales to start. I've been looking for beef tamales for a loooong time! Nowhere to be found, until now...kinda. The tamales came out as a tamale roll with the shredded beef on top. Okay I get it, gives the chef more flexibility to serve up pork, chicken, and beef tamales. It's was very good, just a bit odd it wasn't stuffed. But the taste was there and it was tasty and delicious! Then I had the Chayote. First time but definitely not the last! This was Mexican vegetables filled with corn, onions, tomatoes, cilantro and chayote topped with cheese. A chayote is a tasty squash that is a cross between zucchini and cucumber! It's very good and done nicely. All the ingredients are fresh. The guacamole was freshly made and delicious! As was there fresh chips and salsa. Great job. Today, I enjoyed a yummy Mexican lunch at Dos Amigos. From the outside, the establishment looks uninviting considering it's on the side of an isolated road. However, don't let that deceive you from the authentic Mexican ambience and delicious food. The inside is decorated with very colorful and festive l Mexican murals, tables, and chairs. It definitely gives off that real Mexican vibe. Ambience rate 10/10. They give your classic chips and salsa as a complimentary starter. What was ordered were... 1. Carne/Steak Tacos: - The steak wasn't anything special, it tasted bland. Thankfully, they gave a side of salsa verde for some taste. Rate 5.5/10. 2. Fajitas de Carne: - This dish had very good seasoning and mixed well with the onions, mushrooms, peppers, and tomatoes. However, it was extremely oily which was a downside. Rate 7.5/10. 3. Enchiladas con Mole Poblano: - This place makes the BEST enchiladas con mole I have ever tasted. The sauce is super savory and sweet. The tortillas are cooked perfectly soft in the middle and crispy on the edges. And my meat of choice is ground beef which they season nicely. Lastly, it is melted in a good amount of cheese. They normally put a ton of mole poblano sauce on the plate which I love, however this time they skimped out which was upsetting. So I wish they consistently doused the dish in that sauce. Nevertheless, this is my favorite dish due to how delectable it tastes. Rate 10/10. *each dish comes with a side of rice and beans* The prices for each dish are fair considering the amount that is given. The staff is very friendly, however the service is a little slow when you first order. Once you place your order, the food does come out relatively quick, so that's nice. Service rate 9/10. Overall, I would describe this place as a hidden gem in terms of their enchiladas con mole poblano. I always come here to this specific restaurant just for that dish. Never again! The portions were large. But, then I was pressured to get the super quesadillas, then the bill came. They charged $3 for a coke, and there was no free refills!!! (I spent $9 or $12 on soda!!!) Not a good one. The waiter took us to our table and we waited for good 1o minutes if we want a drink. I went for a beer and my husband decided just for water since he was driving. I keep looking at the waiter to see if he will turn his eyes to where we were seating.,,,nothing happened,,, he kept talking to the lady who was wearing a pink sweater. Where do I begin? Dos Amigos Restaurant has got to be one of the best hidden treasures in all of the Hudson Valley. Mexican food has historically not been my go to when I'm hungry. It's been my experience that they heavily lean on what the singer Setra calls "cheese, cheese, cheese, cheese cheese". Most of the Mexican food that I've explored has been built on a foundation of cheese and cheese doesn't play nice with my body, so because I avoid it, that usually limits my options. Our friendly and efficient server navigated the menu and constructed an array of choices that when all was said and delivered to the table, were bursting with freshness and flavor. The chips and salsa were a reminder of what I always knew was possible; a testament to what happens when a restaurant does something better than open a jar and cares about providing an eye opening, heart warming offering. The meal went on to steak and really great rice and beans and more fresh deliciousness in the tortillas but now is a good time to reveal what made the meal feel like some unseen force was making love to my palate and my mind: the best margaritas outside of Mexico. A bold claim that a single sip can confirm but you'll know for sure when you find yourself licking the bottom of the glass. Dos Amigos restaurant just might have made me a fan of Mexican food. The appearance is not appealing on the outside. Both entrances to the parking lot is so messed up, my car suspension rod bent. The food is ok, but could be a lot better. It makes you go "ehh" for comparatively med to high prices for what kind of food it is. Avoid parking here unless you want a flat tire or worse. Customer service is fair. They always seemed rushed. The burrito was also very small. My boyfriend got the steak amigos- steak and shrimp in a chipotle cream sauce.....that sauce was so good I couldve licked the plate. We ordered take-out and the food was fine, but what really bothered me was the fact that they took hot food directly from a boiling hot fryer and placed it right into a styrofoam container without letting it cool off first, causing the container to melt in several sections. I was left with a take out container with large holes in it. Was it possible that this also caused my food to be contaminated with the toxic melted styrofoam since they were in contact? Probably. We were craving Mexican food, so we decided to make the trip to Dos Amigos. Very glad we did as everything from the setting to the meal was awesome! We started our meals off with some chips & salsa and some house margaritas: Coconut, Mango, and Original. For our main, we ordered the pork burrito and chicken enchiladas. To close it out for dessert, we had churros with ice cream- big enough for two. Everything we ordered was very fresh, delicious and highly recommend. Overall service and prices were great, loved the brightly colored painted tables and chairs. Highly recommended, will be back! read more

Charged $86 for 2 combo's, 2 Taco meals and 1 Fiesta grande. I know places have increased their prices, but each item on posted menu's are under $10 each. When I called for takeout, they said they didn't do combinations anymore. However when I said I needed to find out alternate meals, the guy said he could do it this time. Looks like each item in the combo was charged at the full $9.25 price. Between 2 of the combos, there was overlapping enchiladas, so possibly only charged as a single for that one. Otherwise it looks like 5 times $9.25. Come on, that is highway robbery! I paid by credit card and was never given a receipt to look at the breakdown. When I got home and looked at the prices on the takeout menu I picked up, I was in shock at what was done. Shame on Don Amigos for scamming a takeout order this bad. Shame on me for not asking for the bill to review. Food was good, but being scammed is not worth the takeout business. Never again, and I suggest others also stay away!!!! read more

Looks can be deceiving. This building is a total eyesore but once inside, your taste buds and belly will love you. We were warmly greeted by our server in their "bar" area. There's a tiny section at the entrance that seats about 8 people at the bar with a few tiny tables. The main dining room is also tiny but tables are spaced efficiently. We ordered drinks and an appitizer (the guacamole) Drinks came fast and the guacamole followed. I'm obsessed with all things avocado. Theirs is tasty and fresh. I'm not a fan of the tortilla bowl. It created a soggy salty mess on the bottom. Main dishes were ordered. The server was a middle aged man who was very pleasant and friendly. I really appreciated his attentiveness. I scarfed down, yes SCARFED, my chimichangas. They weren't topped with cheese or a red sauce as I've had at other Mexican establishments so I added some of the table salsa. Oh LORT, they were delicious. 3 of them were filling but I easily could have ate another 2 just out pure glutton. The server offered us Tequila but we had our son with us so we had to pass but the gesture was spot on. I mean WHO offers anything nowadays even as a tasting?! Love it! My inner Mexican will be back here to scarf down more guacamole and delicacies. 4 stars for the smokey dining room from the kitchen and menu that wasn't transparent or 100% clear on what we were ordering. read more

A lot of good food for not a lot of money, my favorite combo. First off, the complementary chips and salsa are addictive. The chips alone were perfect, fresh and crispy. The salsa was mild but flavorful. I ordered a chicken tamale appetizer ($5) which by itself could have been a lunch for two. The tamales were big, filled with nice big pieces of shredded chicken (white and dark meat), and covered in cheese, lettuce, red sauce, and sour cream. For entrees we both had chicken enchiladas, one rancheras style (red sauce), the other suizas style (green, tomatillo sauce). I liked both but I think the suizas style went best with the chicken. Again, their shredded chicken was good quality. Each entree had a side of refried beans, rice, and a salad with a vinaigrette dressing. The rice and beans were good, not too salty. Everything appeared to be made in house from scratch. The bar area has two TVs so I had a good view of the Jets game. read more
