Ahhhh the shoe! My husband and I are huge fans of the taco factory, but while hanging out at rock fantasy one day, we decided to checkout El Zapata. Needless to say we were not disappointed. The food was delicious and very filling and tasty at that. Our server was so kind and sweet. I had only wished that the frozen margarita blender was working, but they said it should be up and running by the summertime so it looks like I will be making a trip back. Very disappointed with the food from this restaurant. We ordered chorizo tacos and aguachile and the shrimp in the aguachile was completely raw and not cured by the lime juice. Eating raw shrimp is dangerous and yet the restaurant argued with me that this was their typical presentation. Additionally the chorizo in the tacos did not appear to be properly cooked. The reaction from the restaurant on my displeasure with the food left a lot to be desired as they insulted my knowledge of Mexican cuisine in their dispute. Ordered takeout and I must say I'm a little disappointed. Ordered the steak/shrimp/chicken fajitas, the side guacamole and 2 pernil tacos. Fajitas were over filled with this red sauce shrimp was over cooked, chicken was tasteless and the steak had no flavor, rice had so much sauce that you couldn't see the rice and beans and the veggies were so soft. The pork in the tacos was old and flavorless and the guacamole wasn't good. Service in the restaurant was good. However very dissatisfied with the quality of the food. Probably won't patronize this establishment again. read more

How have I lived in Middletown for 1.5 years without ever coming here? I have no clue but I won't be making that mistake anymore! This is the best authentic Mexican food I've had in a very long time. Everything tasted fresh and homemade, from the guac to the tacos to the molcajete to the flan. The molcajete has so much meat in there I think it would be ideal to share amongst a group or for two people to split if you're not ordering anything else. Prices are extremely affordable. We even got drinks and our total was still less than $50. We'll be back soon! read more

This restaurant always has tasty tacos. This time I ordered one shrimp and five chicken tacos(see image) totaling $18. The shrimp tacos are well seasoned, but the chicken are a bit plain. Despite the plain taste, the tortilla, onions and cilantro make the whole taco really tasty. The restaurant doesn't look like much and it's a bit small, but the food makes up for it. What a fantastic find in Middletown! Some of the best Mexican food I've had in NY. The service was so friendly, welcoming and helpful - very much steering me in the absolute correct direction with the pollo zapata dish. I was so impressed with the depth of flavor in the rice, beans, and salsa roja. Also tried the lengua tacos which was a great move. El Zapata is a neighborhood gem. The service was extremely efficient and our server very patient. We were a large group and had many many questions about the menu and even though it was a Saturday night and crowded she never rushed us. Vegetarian nachos were delicious, Smokey onions gave them a perfect flavor. Same with the vegetable flautas- vegetable perfect mix of crunch and smoke, not too much cheese. Margaritas were large and tasty - especially the jalapeño one. I had read the great reviews before I ordered but i didn't expect it to be that good! My toddler had 3 servings of rice if that puts it in perspective. Never ever have I ever had such amazing ceviche in my life. Every time I come to Middletown to visit my boyfriend, I would make him take me here for their ceviche. Their food in general here is super cheap and super good. I've never had a bad experience here. Their ceviche is soooooo fresh. Their shrimp is chewy and they're not skimpy on avocados either. I could eat this all day and night if I lived in Middletown. I super duper highly recommend trying their ceviche out. It's like heaven food no matter which season you eat it in. The service is always good here. If this place goes out of business, I don't think I can live anymore because their ceviche is too good to be true. Great portions! Walking into the restaurant you feel as though you actually walk across the border to Mexico. The interior decor really sets the atmosphere. I got the creamy Cajun steak with rice and beans which was great! Really liked the flavor and seasoning of the dish, however, I didn't know how thin the steak was and how there was a slice of cheese stuck between the two thin pieces of steak. Great authentic mexican food. Coming from a Texas native, tex-mex lover they hit the right spot in between true mexican and tex-mex. Tacos here are never a letdown, they fill them up, double corn tortillas, and plenty of cilantro and onions. Chimichangas are great with chicken or al pastor. Their al pastor is one my favorite in middletown, spicy and flavor packed here. Lots of nice decor in this little family owned joint. My my my, I was very impressed with my visit to El Zapata. The restaurant is quaint and decorated with items fitting for the menu. Service was great The food was amazing! From what I hear the menu is authentic. I got tacos and they were amazing. They should burn Taco Bell to the ground and sweep away the ashes. The guy next to me got the shredded chicken. Delicious food! Loved their vegetarian tacos and tostadas! So good that after trying it for the first time, I went back again for more then next day. I love that they are not stingy with the cilantro and the flavor of the vegetables in my tacos provided a very authentic home-cooked feel. The restaurant itself is festive and inviting. I've only ever had takeout, but the dining room is spacious, colorful, and appears comfortable. The only complaints I have would be that I ordered the same thing two days in a row, but the second dish was different from the first (was missing the radishes, cilantro, and lime). It could be because vegetarian tacos aren't necessarily on the menu, but since I did go in hoping to get the exact same thing I got the first time, it was a little surprising when I opened the box. Very slow service. The server was more intent in manipulating her smart phone than attending to customers. Rest room was filthy and the single toilet was clogged. Absolutely disgusting. Food was satisfactory but definitely not inspiring. I got a combination dinner and asked to substitute one item. The item substituted was less expensive then the featured selections. I really like the food and the staff here. It is one of the better places that have authentic Mexican cuisine. My only gripe about El Zapata is when dining in, I ordered water they gave me bottled water and proceeded to charge me 3 bucks. I'm not at an amusement park, give me a glass of water and charger me accordingly. also i've gone with my buddies and they charged us twice and we asked for an explanation and they couldn't justify it and then it got awkward. so just know what you ordered and pay the appropriate price, otherwise all the food is prepared excellently. read more

Great Mexican food. It's a semi sit down restaurant but a lot of people came in for takeout. You order at the counter and they bring your food out on real plates and clean it up for you. I ordered the chicken flautas and the server immediately brought out some complementary fresh chips and salsa. The salsa had a refreshing cilantro and tomato taste with a building spiciness that can creep up on you. The flautas were accompanied by rice, beans, and guacamole. The rice and beans were very flavorful but not salty. The guacamole was rich and savory. The main event, the flautas were filled with savory, fresh, tasty chicken. The spanish rice was the best I've ever had - sorry to my El Tapatio restaurant. The refried beans? OMG. DELICIOUS! The guac they serve on the dish was perfect - tasted delish with the fresh chips brought out with the salsa. The flautas? I've never had them before so it's not fair that I give them thumbs down but they really lacked flavor. They were fried tough so I had a hard time eating them. I ended up opening them up to get the meat which I mixed with the rest of the platter food because the meat lacked flavor. I took the rest of it home and it did taste better after sitting a few hours. I would go back here. Great service. Nice and clean. The restaurant is nice and the food is ok, (the quality of the food is always inconsistent, one day its good, another day it's not) but THE SERVICE is terrible and ruined the whole experience! I've been here a number of times, but the wait staff is not good at all. Tonight was the worst, we were about to walk out, but the woman behind the counter noticed and said in Spanish, "to get the food they're gonna leave" and then the food magically appears. We weren't checked on for over 45 minutes, we were completely forgotten about. People came, ate and went before we got any word from a server/waiter. There was even a table of 5 that appeared way after us and by the time we were noticed they were half done with their plates. Theirs obvious favoritism at this restaurant. Maybe they should pick people with actual experience in the industry instead of family members that don't care about their job. The waiter we had kept passing by and looking at us and saying nothing! And we were sat right by the kitchen so we left smelling like we were working in there, so I definitely know she noticed us every time. Someone else finally noticed us and asked if we needed anything. Once they brought out the food we needed to go anyway and asked if they can pack it up, which took another 10 minutes for some unexplainable reason. We ate at home, disappointed. read more
