This place is well stocked and the staff are friendly and polite. When going through the aisles I noticed old models of items that in my opinion are expensive (there are newer models online you can get for the same price). I went in this morning to rent a chainsaw. I pressed the help button and waited with my toddler in tow. After waiting ~10 minutes and no one came back I went to the front to see if anyone was available to assist me. When a man came around I told him I was there to rent a chainsaw for a small project of cutting up a small stump and a large branch that had fallen. He asked me if I've ever used a chainsaw, which I responded I had and his condescending tone told me exactly how the rest of this interaction was going to proceed. He pulled the chainsaw out and told me if I ruined it I would have to pay for the chainsaw. I informed him I understood how rentals work and feel confident using a chainsaw. He then went on to say, "this is more than just making one cut of wood with your Dad." Incredibly patronizing and superfluous. He began his tutorial and I was following along when my 3 year old told me he needed to use the restroom. I told the man assisting me that I would be right back and we could pick up where we left off. He reminded me how important the tutorial was even though I had not been dismissive or argumentative of him going over how to operate the chainsaw. When I returned from the restroom he had removed the chainsaw and safety bag from the counter and informed me he didn't think he could rent it to me. In disbelief I asked him to explain why he felt that way. He said, the way I was talking. I was unsure what he meant and he refused to give any additional information so I asked if it was because I was a woman? He immediately got defensive and said that's not the reason yet could not provide an answer as to why he found me incapable of safely operating a chainsaw. I was incredibly insulted by the entire interaction and walked up front to purchase an additional item I needed. I explained to the cashier how frustrating my interaction was with the rental and she called for a manager to come and speak with me. He was also unhelpful and told me he would, "look into it" and it was "not because of gender." I could completely understand if I was not of sound mind, was intoxicated or unwilling to follow the tutorial and safety information being provided why I would be denied but none of that applied to this situation. No explanation was provided beyond him "feeling" it wasn't a good idea. Absolutely absurd customer service. Fortunately, the next rental store I went to provided me a chainsaw and excellent customer service without making me feel like I was a bumbling idiot incapable of using a simple tool. read more

I hardly ever buy anything here, mostly because it's overpriced and/or I just don't need it. However, me and the minor come here often to play. If you were there last week you may have seen us with dryer vent coils on our arms and a tomato cage on our heads singing "domo arigato Mr. Roboto." We also ran around the store with the hand held seed spreaders pretending to spray poison on bad guy aliens. After that we jousted with various gardening tools, don't worry, they weren't too sharp! I'm pretty sure the employees here hate us, and I don't blame them. But it's just so much fun to run up and down the creepy, dark aisles and explore, and we do put everything back before we leave. read more

I've only been to this place a handful of times, as I am completely mechanically inept. But they have gardening stuff (I'm bad at that, too, but I do try) and they make keys. It has a definite small town feel to it, which I like. The cashiers have always been friendly. I had a key made a week ago. I marched to the back of the store where the key-making magic happens. There was no one around, so I rang the annoying little bell and had somebody there inside of a minute. He made my key and then handed me the key. That was it! No receipt, not a bag, not even the little barcode slip that Walmart puts on fabric. In a trust-induced haze I wandered to the front register. I showed my key to the young man and told him that I'd had a key made (pretty sure he could have figured it out, but I hate to assume). He rang me up and off I went. The dark side of this fairy tale is that the key doesn't work very well. It only locks the dead bolt (doesn't unlock) and only unlocks the door knob lock (doesn't lock it). However, my husband used to make keys at a hardware store in Madison years ago, and he said that happens a lot and they'll fix it when (if) I get around to taking it back and asking them to. read more

Excellent service and friendly people when I stopped in 11/10/22 to get two duplicates keys for our new home and mailbox. I'd never been there before moving to the area, but was referred there by my step-son who had gone there. When I entered there were 3 staff near the front door. When I asked where the key department is a man named Mike said "I can help you with that" and led me to the back where they have a huge display of all kinds of keys. Mike immediately made the four duplicates I needed, put them in a plastic bag, and both he and the cashier at the checkout reminded me to save my receipt so if there is any reason the keys don't work they can be redone. I appreciated their concerns and instructions, but all four keys worked as good as the originals. They have a well stocked hardware store with things the "Big Box Stores" don't carry and provide minimal service while trying to drive little stores out of business. Such small businesses need to be supported. I was happy to make their acquaintance. It would be a shame if Big Box Stores drive places like this out of business. read more

I would not come here again. Every Time I've come here thus far, they have been understaffed and the staff that are on-site know nothing about the store. They have been unable to mix paint or point us in the direction of any questions asked. Everyone seems discombobulated and is constantly paging for help that never shows, leaving you standing there waiting with somebody that can't help you. Not to mention the check out process. read more

I have never had a cashier that was so rude to me before in my entire life. I need two cans of spray paint and that was it. No help needed. Went to check out and the women was so short tempered and rude. I work in the service industry and rule number one is leave your bad attitude at home. Clearly she did not follow this rule. Her attitude was absolutely terrible from snapping at me about putting my card in the chip reader wrong to yelling at me about try to exit the wrong way.. never thought a quick two minute trip could be so bad but I will definitely be taking my business somewhere else from now on.. read more

I pre-order a machine three in advance with to pickup and the assistant manager was drunk at the rental desk acted llime it was a big problem to rent to me. This is a guy that should not be any type of management. I will never go there again. The non-rental cost me $250 in help that i could not fine another rental place sunday. read more

If I could give a negative rating I would as we were driving through the parking lot to another business not blocking anyone suddenly encountered an old lady pounding on our window complaining about the direction of which we were driving claiming it being sole property of Dorn's True Value Hardware. ??? I was confused being we were not blocking anyone nor did anything wrong to be attacked as this is not the experience we have had living in Sun Prairie who all are loving , caring, kind, sweet , good people. We have lived here for years that I was so upset by being attacked I called Dorn's Manager as he responded "I know of who you are speaking of'----as I noticed the Manager of the business we were going to purchase product learned this employee of Dorn's had been screaming at customers all morning being so abusive they called the POLICE for assistance...yet she continued to repeat her same inappropriate behavior as if she completely lost her mind. I am so upset because we are disabled and couldn't use the drive up service making my disabled daughter suffer more pain to get out fo the vehicle and not use the business's drive up over an angry woman with a gripe she apparently was still fuming over from the POLICE response she wanted to hurt this other business. NO employee could act this manner and not be terminated immediately that the Manager of Dorn's was complacent I now question if this older lady was the owner's wife or relative. Shame on her as I told the Manager if I walk into their business and see her working there I will leave--it was that upsetting by her misconduct. I have had 27 employees as a Manager--in my entire life have never encountered such an angry mean employee which shocked me for this isn't the experiences we have in Sun Prairie who are all so lovely, wonderful , kind and caring---we pray the owners of those businesses resolve this issue so others are not attacked as we experienced. We like to support local businesses which is why I called to speak to both Managers and am documenting it so to let others know if they encounter this again to report it so this abuse is stopped. read more
