We drive by Donut Chef fairly often on our way from Indiana to Greensburg. We figured we'd finally stop in and man am I glad we did. The donuts were great. Seriously. The white cream was soft and sweet - but not too sweet. The brownie was awesome. I don't normally like the crusts of a brownie but even this end piece was good. Everything was great. Upfront, the Donut Chef still makes a wide variety of amazing donuts, cookies, bread, and rolls. With that said; speaking as a customer that literally frequents the business every week and has done such for a number of years. there is one area that now has a little room for improvement to ensure a local favorite continues to thrive and survive. The Donut Chef seems to have lost a bit of its personality after a change of ownership. I have no idea if it is impacting the bottom line, but what I am seeing every weekend is that the long line that I waited in each Sunday is gone. There were always a few regulars there at the counter having a donut and drinking coffee, and the individuals working the counter knew the customers and interacted in a much more friendly way that gave the Donut Chef feel like small town businesses were like in the 60s and 70s. With a chain donut shop recently opening up less than 2 miles away, I would hate to see a legendary establishment go away like happened with the Wagon Wheel restaurant that was next to the Donut Chef for a number of generations. The donuts are still great. It saves me time to get the donuts I go in for every Sunday and occasionally during the week, but I hope the ownership that took over earlier this year can restore some of the hometown charm. Staff at the counter seems to be constantly changing, the interaction with customers is different and at times feels less home town and more cold. The new ownership should look closer at what made it want to purchase it. I've discovered some former customers are starting to go to the Donut Connection that opened just over a mile away. Again the donuts and other products are still great, but individual small businesses can't afford to operate with the lack of personality found in big chains or they seem to fail. Not going to argue, they sell great stuff, that is if you get there very early. Stop there different days but after 11 and noon and sold out of a majority of items. Good for them but what about people stopping after noon? Even on Fat Tuesday I was there at 11am told sold out early cause they were busy. Again great for you, but knowing now how busy you get, why not make more product? It's not like it wouldn't sell the next day? Wins my vote just for being open on Sundays until 4pm. I usually go there to pick up their hard rolls and bread, but almost always leave with way more other stuff. Their donuts are freshly made, and never leave a bad after taste like some places. I am a fan of both the raised, and cake donuts. Cookies, fruit tarts, and pound cakes are made with quality ingredients at an affordable price. I just have to say, Wow! Donut Chef is amazing! I'm visiting from Baltimore to get an oil undercoating at Steel City Undercoating on Route 22. As I was passing by, I saw Donut Chef and realized I was starving. After dropping off my truck, I decided to take a walk. Two miles later, in 84-degree weather that felt like 100 degrees, I finally arrived at Donut Chef. I walked in and placed my order for a cinnamon roll and an old fashioned donut. The owner, I assume, asked me if I had walked all the way there. She kindly offered me a water and even asked if I needed a ride back to Steel City. Very good donuts. I've tried their apple fritters, cinnamon sticks, and glazed- alllll are good. Fluffy with a crisp edge and very sweet and mouth-wateringly good. They bake all day, so no worries about getting there at 1 and there's no donuts left (at least I haven't had any trouble yet). This place does get busy though. I stopped by here on the way from here to there. First of all, if you blink, you will miss this place. It's a tiny little shop on 22. I love the atmosphere. It looks like it is straight out of the 50s. The shop is very simple and old-time-y with a few glass cases full of baked goods and a couple of "regulars" sitting at the short counter drinking coffee. As far as the food, the donuts were delicious. They are not "creative" and there weren't too many choices, but the dough was wonderfully light. I got raised doughnuts, which I prefer, and they were soft and crisp at the same time, and just sweet enough. We also got bread, which had a wonderful texture but just an average taste. It was whole-wheat bread though - perhaps the white is more flavorful. Overall, I would highly recommend this bakery. It's locally-owned, cute, simple, and good. And it allowed me an evening in which my children were blissed out in a doughnut-induced Nirvana haze, without also them also getting sugared up and mega-hyper. We recently moved to the area and are doing the standard "find our new place," for all types of food. Donuts were at the top of my list. Unfortunately I've found a majority of Dunkin' which if your a true donut fan is not ideal. We stumbled on this place not too far from our home and it was just the right fit. The donuts were as fresh as anyone could ask with good selection, with quick and friendly service. We stopped here on our way back east for snacks for the road and some of the rolls they are famous for. Unfortunately by the time we got there the rolls were sold out. However we were able to get a few different donuts. The jelly donut was essentially a jam filled doughnut topped with a white icing. Ok. The Boston cream wasn't a bad donut either. Get in my car and inhale three "minutes-out-of-the-fryer" donuts: glazed, sugar and crème-filled. This bakery doesn't make 50 different kinds of donuts. They make about 10 or 12. That's it. No junk. Just the basic varieties, but, wow, are they good. If you are tired of mass-production, chain store donuts, you NEED to make a trip to the Donut Chef at the Brick Oven. Look carefully. You have to stop at this place if you are driving to or from Pittsburgh. It looks like a hole in the wall on the outside but inside it has the most amazing donuts, pastries, breads, apple dumplings and cookies I've ever had in my life. They are baked fresh daily. The family who owns it is so nice. My husband and I stopped on our way back to State College, and the owner brewed us a fresh pot of coffee so we could have fresh coffee for the road. He also knew since we had a long road trip, he gave us the freshest bread in the shop. Trust me this place is worth the stop. Your mouth will be happt.
