The reason why is because the setting is a like a huge office with a receptionist greeting you and it feels awkward to be there. The receptionist told us there's samples in the lounge area and we are able to purchase our delicious bakery goods from her when we are ready. Kinda can't help it, but with a plate full of delicious bakery samples, you'll end up eating a lot of it without realizing it! I'll definitely be back when I need to buy more!! Madeleines are so yummy so I'm glad I stumbled on this place to buy a box. This looks like the corporate location so from the outside it does not look like a typical bakery where you can check out all the different things and order. The minimum buy is 1 box and I got the variety with had regular, lemon, chocolate dipped for 16 bucks. They accept credit cards and after they get your order they send someone to the back to get the box for you. You can then wait in the lobby while trying their individually wrapped ones. They look like they would be so good with your morning beverage. I hoep my client liked it because it was purchased for them. A good different alternative to cupcakes, cookies, etc. Its right near Peet's and Raiders HQ towards the back of Loop. read more

Extreeeemely yummy and highly-addictive madeleines. Fresh, not too sweet, moist, cake-like, the egginess just right--the way madeleines should taste. Blows other so-called madeleines out of the water, including Miette's. I can eat 3 to 4 in a sitting. Oink. Available at most Peet's. Trader Joe carries them, maybe Andronico, sometimes Mollie Stone (probably with a huge markup). Starbucks used to carry them but they cheaped out, went generic and slapped on their own copycat packaging. Cheaper when you buy them in bulk (box of 60 in 3- or 6-packs) directly from their headquarter, to split with friends. They freeze well up to 2 months. (They recommend that you store in freezer, not fridge, and take a pack out when you have a craving. Thaws in half an hour and best eaten within 10 days fresh or after thaw.) No preservatives or trans fat. Also comes in lemon and chocolate dipped...but I like the original. read more

I didn't have 14 friends to distribute these to, in reality I was taking 10 for myself but somehow in the long crowded upstream walk from their booth to the seating area, they were knocked from my drunken hands and someone stole the precious jewels of sweetness from me. I didnt realize Alameda had so many good bakeries. Having tried Semifreddis also, It was another revelation for the madeleines here. Not too sweet, good soft, but firm texture. I'm giving them only 4 stars because I haven't had a chance to try them warmed... and they are just a tad bit less tasty than the soft, straight-out-of-the-oven free samples we had when we were at Bouchon Bakery a month ago. However, the ones at Bouchon are like $3 a piece so if I had to buy either one of them then these totally win because these have a better taste to price ratio. These are the best Madeleines I have ever had. They are chewier and more moist than the ones you get from Walgreens or Costco in the cirular plastic container. I first tried them at a small coffee shop where I work and wanted to cut costs so tried to order some online. After years of knowing about Donsuemor Madeleines location in Alameda, I finally made it there to purchase madeleines directly from the source. Upon entering the front door, I was greeted by a receptionist that showed me the list of items that could be purchased. I selected a box of madeleines and took a seat while my order was filled. While waiting, I sampled a lemon madeleine which was located in a bowl on the table for visitors to enjoy. After a short wait, my order was brought to the reception desk. While the madeleines are made on site, they are sold frozen. That was a disappointing discovery. I thought I would be buying madeleines made that day. In addition, what I later realized is the madeleines are much cheaper at Costco. By "much", I mean half the price. If you want to purchase traditional madeleines, buy them at Costco. If you want to buy lemon madeleines or chocolate dipped madeleines, then visit the headquarter's office. read more

I honestly did not know that Donsuemor Madeleines was based in the Bay Area. I am happy to learn that they are and am even happier to support the local business. I've always loved these madeleines as they are the perfect soft cookie filled with that sugary buttery flavor. The cookie interior is always moist and fluffy and almost cake-like. Grabbed a sample (ok, more like 3) at Costco, of all places, and bought a bag to take home. It didn't even cross my mind that the little heart shaped madeleines were probably leftovers from Valentine's day, but for a little over $8, I got 20 of those buggers. I could probably eat at least a third of them if I let myself, but alas, I do have to fit into a wedding dress soon. Oh, how I used to love Donsuemor traditional madeleines. I haven't had any for a couple of years and, on seeing them at one of our local gourmet supermarkets, I promptly bought two packages to bring as part of a cookie platter to a friend's party. What a disappointment! The soft, moist light texture was the same as I remembered but the rich butter flavor was completely gone. I thought that perhaps my taste buds had gone stale so I asked my wife to try one. I gave her no prompts and she agreed that the cookie had no butter flavor. In fact she said it was tasteless. I went on line to check the Donsuemor website to check the ingredient list which I reproduce here: Ingredients: Sugar, butter (milk), wheat flour (unbleached wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), eggs, natural flavoring. But the ingredient list on the Donsuemor packages I bought at Balducci's on Old Georgeotown Road in Bethesda, Maryland is quite different: Sugar, enriched flour (wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), butter (cream, salt), eggs, canola oil, natural flavors, butterfat, water, invert sugar, baking powder (sodium acid pyrophosphate, corn starch, calcium sulfate, tricalcium phosphate and monocalcium phosphate), milk. Before buying any Donsuemor products again, I will check the ingredient list more carefully and advise you to do the same. read more

Just wanted to tell you folks that your individual wrapping of the cookies was a great improvement over just placing them in the container unwrapped. Before, by the time I finished all the "naked" cookies the last ones were a little dried out. I really enjoy your cookies and thank you for the packing improvement. I personally know people that wok here. They love what the do and good at it. I only know what goes on there because they tell me what's up. But the perks of knowing people that work there is I get to try samples of new products coming out & of course get free stuff! Got a whole box of cookies for free. The kind that are my favorites are the chocolate dipped ones. A whole entire box like that is nearly $40 - paid nothing. Really recommend trying these cookies if you haven't, yea it's sort of expensive but it's worth it because they are good. They have them at Starbucks , 4 plain cookies for $3?
