We went on a Monday night a little under an hour before closing and they were more than happy to seat us. I believe our server was Lauren and she was just as nice and helpful as could be. Ask for her and you'll get awesome service. She gave us recommendations, brought us a ton of extra Garlic bread (baked to a golden buttery crispness), and even got us a to-go order after the chicken closed. My daughter just had to take home some of the chicken gumbo! I don't eat seafood but my family does and I don't mind getting the steak or chicken dish. The grilled chicken was charbroiled really well and was juicy and delicious, and very reasonably priced. My husband and son both had catfish and the portions were huge. They wanted to try the fried gator and I was told "it tastes like chicken and looks like chicken." . My daughter didn't love the crawfish/cheese ravioli, but she's not a seafood fan either. I was PLEASANTLY surprised at my 2nd and more recent visit to Don's. They must have gotten new Management or something. I think I went on a Monday, when every other restaurant on the Northshore likes to be closed. It was half off all Oysters and a great experience. The waitress was great and the food really exceeded my expectations. It is more than just a chain to me now. I ordered a seafood salad and was just wowed! It was exactly what I want to see when ordering a $12+ salad. It had lots of fresh seafood on it and tasted wonderful, like a damn seafood salad should taste! My boyfriend ordered the soft shell crab dinner and it looked really good as well. I tasted a piece and it was really seasoned well. Oh, and I can't forget the Chargrilled oysters! They were great too! (Although NOTHING or NO ONE beats Drago's charbroiled oysters). Also, they have a patio... Which I find hard to come by on the Northshore. Didn't plan on visiting this restaurant but glad I did. Had to wait for 10 or so minutes so sat at the bar where the barman told us about the beers they had on tap. I enjoyed my meal although I think maybe the A/C was set a little low, did think about sitting out on the patio but was glad I didn't as all that seperates the diner from the smokers (standing) is a plastic curtain. I've been to Don's several time before last night and it has been great every time. Last night my wife and I ate there with other family members and it was quite busier and much noisier than usual. The service was great for how busy it was but the food was lack luster. I ordered the shrimp dinner and wife ordered the half shrimp half etoufee dinner for her, the fried shrimp were salty not natural tasting. My dish was very greasy and salty. Don's was right outside of my hotel and I was tired from the flights so I decided to give this place a try. I ordered the chargrilled oysters which was cooked in butter and cheese over the open grill. Overall interesting taste, the toppings pretty much masked the taste of any oyster on the bottom. For my main dish, I ordered a Cajun ravioli which was fried ravioli with a crawfish cream sauce. Not particularly a great dish, overall dry texture with heavy sauce that didn't help with the dry ravioli. read more

I take my son here because it's a quick, no reservation place to sit down and eat seafood. People tell me they don't like the chef, but everything I have had there has been really good. Some evenings they have $2.99 all you can eat crawfish and that's my sons favorite. If I can get a bargain like that to feed my teenage boy, I'm all in! Having eaten at Don's for two nights in a row I can honestly say that the food, portions and service WERE AMAZING! Each night we had a larger than average group and the service was top notch. Ariel (Friday night) and Marcus (Saturday evening) are 2 of the best servers I have had at any restaurant in a really long time. With our Saturday evening meal we had several familes all spread out with 4 different server's and I wish I knew who they were to thank them as well. The food was what you would expect and more. From the alligator tail appetizer to the raw oysters and the burgers and blackened redfish we didn't have anyone that did not like the food they ordered within our group. The Crawfish was probably the biggest hit in our group due to the ease of cracking them open and the flavors as well. For a chain type restaurant this place had consistent and great food and that is not what you would expect. The drink specials of 2 for 1 draft beers was a great thing for everyone as we had all been out in the sun and heat all day and it helped to get us settled in for the evening. I thin you would be remiss if you passed on Don's for something else and if you are a local reading this then you guys have a gem of a restaurant here that offers great food and service at a reasonable price point. read more

Meal was great. Took advantage of check in offer and stepmother enjoyed the gumbo. Lots of shrimp in it and no okra. Only thing is there seemed to be lots of Worcester sauce resulting in being a bit salty. She also enjoyed her filet mignon that was done excellently. The fried alligator was the freshest I've ever had, the fried catfish was excellent- I got the large when I should have gotten the regular - it was so much food - the chicken and sausage gumbo was superb and the sweet tea was great. I'm so impressed with this place. We've been here a couple of weeks and tried numerous places. We are touring the country in an RV and loving it but mostly because we get to try out places like this. So far, this is our favorite meal in Louisiana. Our server, Raelyn, made it so. I've been told since I got here to try the broiled oysters but I am not that fond of oysters so I was hesitant to get even a half order but Raelyn got me a sample to try. I was so thrilled especially since they did not turn out to suit my taste, I didn't have to waste an order. That was such a sweet thing she did. My colleagues and I dined here one night after work. The service was good and most of the food was good. The raw oysters and the grilled yellowfin tuna were good. I live less than a mile from Don's... and I love the food. But I'm not coming back. We have visited this restaurant at least 10 times, and we have continued to make excuses for the deplorable service we have received each visit. Finally, tonight, we have decided to never return. Specifically, the bartenders are horrible. We always sit at the bar. Even when the restaurant is completely dead and still when the restaurant is busy, we get no attention, drinks sit empty for 15 or more minutes at a time, we wave and attempt to get the attention of the bartenders to no avail. What are the managers doing??? From my view on 10+ visits, they are completely useless. Most of the employees seem more interested in their own needs (chewing food when they serve us, bringing themselves water bottles while we have sat for 20 minutes waiting to order) rather than customer service. In my opinion, the managers should be ashamed and should be promptly replaced with someone who knows customer service and the restaurant industry. They should be more observant of how disinterested the staff seems toward customers and less interested in casual conversation with employees. Sad Ex-Customer. UPDATE: My husband and I did return to Don's tonight. I can see such a difference!!! The manager, Dayna, immediately greeted us. She thanked us for our 1 star review and told me that it motivated a staff meeting and ignited change at the restaurant. She sat with us for a good while asking questions and listening to our feedback. She comped an app even though we told her it was unnecessary. It was clear that she truly cared about the customer experience! Our service tonight was great! The bartender, Rachel, was very attentive all evening. It's so nice to see a restaurant take criticism and use it for the greater good! The atmosphere was more energetic and we were very pleased with the positive changes. I thought this place was going to be a boring chain. Boy was I wrong!!! Came in during the week to a mostly full house and bar. Started off with some chargrilled oysters! They were perfect!! Then moved on to the seafood spinach dip!! Again it was very good!! Settled on a seafood platter, it was prepared PERFECTLY!!! Wait staff was prompt, and my glass of tea never empty!! It's unfortunate that I have to write this review, but the food I experienced was very substandard. I lived in Covington for about 2 years before moving away 3 years ago. I just recently moved back, and seeing that I frequented Don's before because of the quality of the food, I knew there would be no bad choice to dine here again. I ordered the filet medium, as I've always done in the past. Not only was it brought out rare, full red center, it was under seasoned. My sides were green beans that were way too sweet and a twice baked that was bland. While the service was good, the food itself wasn't great at all. They tried placing my steak back on the grill to cook it more, but it came back medium rare and the taste was worse than before. I hated to have left such a nice cut of meat on the plate, but it was so bad I had no choice. Hopefully this was a one time situation. read more
