Love dons already, usually eat at Metairie location, but was driving by and said what the heck. It was everything I expect from dons. Our server, Michelle, was fantastic--and on Christmas Eve too. Great attitude, and great service. One thing though -- getting the gumbo here pretty much ruined all other gumbos for me. The food was great. Two things to improve on. Gumbo had good flavor but was very thin. Never had gumbo that didn't come out of a can that wasn't thick. Needed file or okra. Also, very little heat. My bloody Mary made up for that. Must have been 1/3 tabasco sauce. My forehead was very wet after drinking. These were both minor things. My crab au gratin was superb. The stuffed potato (We call them twice baked potatoes) was really good. My wife had the Zydeco Tacos, and they were outstanding. She had the sweet potato casserole with them, and it was very tasty. We have a business dinner here because most of the group loved seafood. The crab dinner was very good and for those that did not like seafood, they ordered filet mignon with a stuffed potato and a cheeseburger. Both were excellent. read more

I have to say, I wasn't very impressed with my visit to Don's. This was a while back, we had come in with a gift card to try it out. It just really didn't impress at all; in fact, there was about $15 left on the card and we never even used it. I can't even remember what we had, but it was your typical seafood fare; shrimp or seafood platter. It wasn't bad, it just didn't stand out and I'd rather head over to Acme where I can get a better meal for the same price or less. It may be time to try it again, but I'm in no hurry; there are plenty of amazing seafood places around where I KNOW I can get a good meal. Sorry, Don's, no offense, I just wasn't impressed, although I see you get good reviews. You've been there a while so you must be pleasing some of the people and we all have a bad day, I suppose. read more

In Covington on business and wanted some good Cajun cooking. From Yelp reviews I tried Don's. Ordered the Boudain Balls to start things off and followed up with the Catfish Acadiana. The Lafayette sauce was a great complement to the Boudain Balls and the Kingfish Ale I was drinking. Then came the main dish. A huge serving of blackened/fried Catfish with etoufee over the top. I came to Don's in Covington for dinner my last night in Louisiana before flying home to Ohio. Lexus, my server, recommended the jacked up charbroiled oysters. They did not disappoint! So good. I also had the seafood platter and the Gin Magnolia. They were both fabulous! It is never fun to eat out alone when you are traveling but Lexus checked on me often and was so friendly. Went in last week looking for boiled seafood. We were excited to hear that they had a special of all you can eat boiled shrimp for 19.99. We both ordered the boiled shrimp. What came out was unlike ant boiled seafood I have ever been served in Louisiana and I have lived here 48 years. The shrimp were served on a bed og onions and bell peppers which was obviously the only seasoning put in the water to boil them. They tasted like bell pepper. I don't even think they put salt in the water. I don't know who's brilliant idea this was but if they serve this nastiness to a tourist they are ruing the state's reputation for good food. The food was Delicious & that's Thanks to my waitress Alexis! She was extremely helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. I asked her for some suggestions, and I was not disappointed at all! The place was very clean on the outside. The other waitresses seem to be just as friendly as Alexis, because they would stop by & pet my dog. I wish I could remember the name of my drink, it was Fantastic! Friendly and well staffed considering the times . Really enjoyed the Seafood combo plate I ordered and there was no issue asking for grilled versus fried . I plan to return, actually did and my second visit I loved the Crawfish Etouffee and Fried Crawfish tails plate even better. I just love the style of Roux they cook to make the Etouffee. Visiting the city I always look for places that have the authentic creole style of cooking and this is one that I will be back too. I ordered the Don's seafood platter with side of gumbo. The platter came with multiple different stilyle of fried seafood that some was even new to me but good. The gumbo had alot of meat and a nice kick too it, so if you like spice definitely try it. The wait staff was also friendly and helpful even putting on the Milwaukee bucks vs Raptors game upon request which as a Bucks fan I'm still sour about.
