I very much enjoyed my experience dining at Dons Seafood this evening. I saw the jacked up shrimp photo on yelp and read description and knew I wanted to try it. I added sweet potato fries to make a meal instead of an appetizer. I was in heaven! The jacked up shrimp are a must try dish! I thought the sweet potato fries were very good. They were thick cut and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. I've had better sweet potato fries, but these were very good and I would order them again. My sweet server, Cayla, helped me choose a dessert. The cobbler tonight was pecan, which I didn't think sounded good. She recommended either the bread pudding or the turtle cheesecake. She was so enthusiastic about the cheesecake, I had to try it. I am so glad I did. The cheesecake itself was fluffy and light. It was drizzled with just the perfect amount of chocolate and caramel and topped with pecans. The graham cracker crust was thick and soft with just enough "crisp" to it. Food was great and service was excellent. They finally fixed the charbroiled oyster hood so that horrible smell doesn't penetrate throughout the entire dining room. My son got the seafood platter and he enjoyed it. I got the redfish special that was really tasty. Quite disappointed to say the least. I was under the impression that ordering the LARGE fried shrimp and fries would yield more than 10 shrimp. I can't even say the flavor was off the charts either. Danny and Clydes (gas station) shrimp have more flavor. $18 dollars for this? I could go right down the street and got a fried shrimp and fries for the same price, with 20 more, non-mutilated shrimp. Also, why were the shrimp butterflied? Why were the tails on them? Maybe for presentation? I thought this was a Cajun place. Somehow, the fried crab claws appetizer for $14 dollars had more crab claws, yet crab claws are way more expensive. This makes no sense, portion-wise. Fried shrimp poboy was a soggy, messy disaster. And not in the good, NOLA way. Half of the shrimp did not have batter. Boudin balls were decent, but I realized they were identical in size and shape meaning they likely come premade in a bag. Recommendations: Adjust prices for mediocre portion sizes. Slightly toast the poboy bread, as that is what is actually Cajun. Do not butterfly shrimp, then leave the tails on, for a fried shrimp and fries dish. Crab claws had a slight Cajun resemblance, but I would just remove Cajun from restaurant name entirely. Serving seafood does NOT make this a Cajun restaurant. Cajun is the extraordinary combination of spices incorporated into the dishes. Lived in Metairie for 30 years and never went to Dons once. I'm glad I didn't, and I'm also saddened that I gave this place a try over here. read more

The food was great. Two things to improve on. Gumbo had good flavor but was very thin. Never had gumbo that didn't come out of a can that wasn't thick. Needed file or okra. Also, very little heat. My bloody Mary made up for that. Must have been 1/3 tabasco sauce. My forehead was very wet after drinking. These were both minor things. My crab au gratin was superb. The stuffed potato (We call them twice baked potatoes) was really good. My wife had the Zydeco Tacos, and they were outstanding. She had the sweet potato casserole with them, and it was very tasty. Splurging date night for us since we're driving out to South Carolina. Hubby was quite impressed with the food since he thought they were closed. Wanted to escape the crowds of Bourbon St but still wanted to taste New Orleans. Don's was an enjoyable experience with excellent service and descent food. Wife had the steamed shrimp and I had the 1/2 fried and 1/2 estouflade (not sure of spelling) both were very good. Fried shrimp were freshly fried crispy and delicious. The complimentary French bread was buttery and tasty. They have a BOGO beer special every day. We were not blown away but were close enough to walk from The Marriott Residence Inn and really enjoyed our dinner in a pleasant environment. I tried Don's hot sauce and it tasted like Texas Pete hot sauce, Don's dry spice was overly salty. We also tried the Oysters, roasted and jacked and both were fresh and delicious. read more

This (and Landrys) used to be one of my goto's. Best local Gumbo. Decided to try on Daddys day. Called, they were open until 10pm. Got there, not a single mask on a single worker. These people will be handling the cleaned glasses, my drinks, my lettuce, my dishes and my food. As well as hundreds of others. Also, many customers from all over due to the density of I-12 motels. Walked in, walked out and crossed the street to Copelands. Food made to order, all workers masked, glasses and silver shiny clean. No brainer. read more
