I purchased a dress for a friend's wedding that needed a few different alterations, and the dress shop recommended Donna so I figured I'd go there since she's probably familiar with the dresses. This was my first time getting a gown hemmed so I went in without expectations. It was too long so I needed the bottom hemmed but wanted to keep some of the train, and it needed to be taken in on the sides as well as another loose fabric piece needed to be sewn down. I called in advance in case I needed an appointment and they answered right away and assured me I could come in at the time I requested. I arrived and there was one other customer she was finishing up with but I barely had to wait at all. Donna was extremely friendly and listened to all of my concerns about the fit of the dress and made suggestions for the hemming. She pinned it all up and I was out of there pretty quickly. She asked when I needed the dress by and assured it would be ready a few days in advance and gave me a ticket with the quoted price on it. I didn't receive a call when it was ready but I was never told I would, but just something that would be nice. I'm sure it would have been ready by the day I was told but I ended up picking it up a few days later. I wasn't able to make it by during the store's regular business hours but I called and thankfully Donna was still there after closing. Donnas tailor was highly recommended to me from a friend of a friend - word of mouth is strong ! I do not live in the Encinitas area so a Yelp search for where I live in the SD city wouldn't have yielded this shop. Anyway I drove 20-30 minutes each time, depending on traffic, to see her to alter my wedding dress and boy -- it. Was. Worth. It!! Only "Con" but it's not really one - she is extremely busy. Each time even with an appointment there is a 10-15 min wait and a line out the door. Good for business but for anyone who isn't used to their tailor being that busy, just be a kind human and super patient. I went a total of 4 times. First time to get fitted/measured, second to try on with the first set of major alterations, and the third time to try with all alterations excluding the bustle, and fourth to pick it up. I think the process dictate that you try it on and pick it up as close to the wedding as possible, for me I picked it up 2 weeks out. You can see my before and after pictures here. She added ribbing or some form of cage to the top part of my dress to give it structure, tucked in the bra area since it had straps before she cut it, and so it's not crazy up top, and then tapered in the sides to give me a shape (I'm as straight as a pencil for body shape) -and then finally hem and bustle pin was added. Donna is hands-down, the best Taylor and all of San Diego. Her work is outstanding and she does everything with extreme attention to detail. Her prices are a little bit on the higher side, but I don't mind paying for extremely high and work. She will also give you her honest opinion on whether something can properly be tailored, or whether she thinks that you should pass on getting something tailored, which I genuinely appreciate. I brought in a few garments for work that needed to be altered and hemmed. When I picked up the items today I realized the hem was cut too short, which was my mistake. I asked the tailor if I would be able to release some of the material at the end to increase the length. She told me I would, but when I got home and released the seams the ends were cut in an irregular shape (as pictured). I understand that the issue of the hem being too short was my responsibility but I don't appreciate that I was lied to and told that I would be able to release the material to add length when it wouldn't be possible. After 20 years of hard use, my fanny pack needed repair. The zippers and seams were fine but the cloth had worn out and that section needed to be replaced. Two other tailor shops, with whom is done business, laughed at my request and showed me the door. Very rude. I brought the fanny pack into Donna's. I showed him the problem and the replacement material I'd brought along. He took it into the back and returned saying it would be very expensive and take a week. I was thrilled with the repair. $30 and a week. It'll be good for another 20 years! I'm bringing all my clothes to Donna's from now on. Great people and service. read more

Terrible. I regret coming here with my wedding dress. I tried to explain to them what I needed altered and I came back in for a bunch of fittings and the exact wrong thing has been done to the dress each time. My dress has a bunch of markings on it now, and lots of loose threads. I paid for it and took it home because I was done dealing with them. Now I have a useless dress without the alterations I needed made. Would not recommend coming here with your wedding dress. Now I'm attempting to do everything by hand myself if I can even manage to somewhat salvage this, but I have very little hope. read more

If I could give below a 1 I would. I texted a photo of a jacket to Donna as she requested to get an estimate for a zipper pull. She quoted my $12.50. I took the poly fleece jacket in. The shop was busy & I had to wait. She looked at the jacket & said she would look for a zipper pull in back. It would be $12.50. She said If she didn't have the zipper pull she would put in a zipper. I went to pick up the jacket after waiting 5 days. I was told it would be $30.00! I told her you told me it would be $12.50 She said she did not have a zipper pull so she put in a new zipper. I TOLD her she NEVER gave me the price for a new zipper OR called me. I told her that I was quoted $12.50. She claims she told me but that is NOT true. The jacket was $26.00 so why would I spend $30.00 for a zipper? I will never go back to this shop Nor would I recommend this shop. read more

I was getting ready to attend a high school reunion social and I had a particular dress I just had to wear. As I was putting it on I noticed the seam had unraveled around my waist in such a way I couldn't have attempted to repair it myself. What was I going to do?
