Brought in 3 pair of trousers for leg length altercation & waist line alteration -- one week later only one trouser was done & owner of the store said one of the others couldn't' be altered -- and that the third trouser would be done in another week. Came back after another week -- nothing was done -- a complete waste of my time & travel. This merchant wants to take in an abundance of jobs, then do only the easy ones. read more

I love this tailor! I've taken probably 25 pieces of clothing to them for either alteration or repair. And they've only turned me away a couple times when I brought in something like a backpack where the material was too thick for them and they suggested I go to a shoe repair place (which was great advice). The quality of the alterations and repairs has always been good enough for me as a guy (it's not like I'm having an expensive dress or something altered, just simple shirts and pants and whatnot), and the price is incredibly reasonable. Today I got back some silk-like pants that had a bunch of holes and I was not expecting a lot but they're good as new and for $10! read more

What can I say that others haven't confirmed already? This place does an amazing job at rock bottom prices and done with a friendly smile from an older Asian gentleman. I had a leather jacket with zippers that I wanted the sleeves shorten. I figured it might be like $40-80, so I was contemplating whether to have it done at all. The older gentleman quoted me a price of $25, I couldn't believe it. I figured if he did a crummy job, I couldn't complain because it was so reasonable. I was surprised at the quality of the job, the zippers were all still functional. I had previously said if he had to sew them shut, it would be alright, but he kept them functional. And the stitching is perfect, I couldn't believe it. For the amount of labor, he could have charged double or triple and I would have still paid it. I couldn't believe Yelpers helped me find this place, I'll be continually be giving them all my business when I need any work done to my clothes. 5 Gold Stars!! read more

I dropped off a navy dress for alterations. Van's pinned the dress and said it would be done 08/06. I went 08/06 to retrieve the dress. Van said item wasn't there. I must be confused, the item was not here. I didn't have my alteration ticket. So rude. I tried to explain that he wasn't present. He said that was not possible. Vanfinally found my "dress " and wouldn't give me a receipt for it. Why? I have been a long time customer. Not anymore. Beware!!! They used to be very reliable. Get everything in writing ! read more

This really is as good as it gets. I brought in 8 items - 6 tops and 2 dresses - to have taken in last week. Van said everything would be ready by Thursday, but I forgot about it til Sunday. His posted hours don't say anything about Sunday, so I called and he was there, so he said come on in! Awesome. For an average of $10 per piece, I feel like I just came from a really inexpensive shopping spree! All my favorite tops fit wonderfully again. I see no reason to go anywhere else for my tailoring needs. OH! And he only takes cash. No worries - there is an ATM nearby. read more

I am always SO nervous to get clothing tailored because it can so easily be ruined. However I never get worried at V &L. They are always reasonably priced (I usually have items taken in, pants hemmed or small flaws fixed) and good! There is a slight language barrier so be sure to use hand gestures and point to exact places where you want a hem. They'll pin your item at where they'll take it in/up, etc and let you take a look. BE SURE to stop and look in the mirror from all angles. You may know that turning your flared boot cuts into skinny jeans is all the rage right now but Van doesn't, ya know? So make sure you see what you want. [And a sidenote- the dry cleaners next store has a tailor it in. I prefer V&L, but the other place did sew me a button hole by hand into a pair of jeans that didn't have one, in one day when I needed it asap!] March 2008 update: I STILL love V&L. Recently I bought a Banana Republic dress (for work) that was a size too big. I got it because it was on sale and such a great deal. I refused to take it to anyone in L.A. and held onto it until I went to Encinitas to visit my parents. Only then would I have it altered. And you know what? It was perfect. Fits like a glove! Same thing with a pair of jeans that needed to be taken in and hemmed. Can't go wrong here. read more

Hours are 9-6:30 Days? This place is amazing! A real gem in North County. The prices are great here and I would definitely come back for all my alteration needs. I've brought slacks to have them hemmed, I believe it was $6. Hes also taken a pair of slacks in since they were too loose, ~$10-12. Fabulous! I just got a bunch of vintage jacket/blazers that my grandma made for herself years/decades ago. I can't wait to bring it to V&L to have it taken in to fit me! V&L perform the best alterations in southern California. Originally, when I lived overseas, I used to have my suits and shirt tailor made; however, upon moving back to the States, this was too expensive of an option. now I just buy suits and shirts that are on sale and take them to Van and he does all the alterations, quickly and at a very reasonable cost. I love this place! I have been coming to them for years! They are capable of fixing literally anything: they hem ALL of my pants perfectly (because I'm a shorty), fix random holes in my jeans and tops, and manage to give my jackets new cuffs when I tear the seams apart because of my bad picking habit. Very reasonably priced (last time I dropped off 3 things and it was only $20). And they are so quick!! You tell them when you want your clothes. 10/10 read more

I have taken tons of stuff to Van and have no complaints at all. It's always a hide-and-go-seek game to find my stuff when I come to pick it up because his clothes filing system is from the Flintstone era, but it is actually funny -- unless you are in a huge hurry. He usually finds it in a couple minutes after yelling some gibbberish in some Asian language to a bevy of unseen people in the back, but it always appears, is always tailored perfectly, and REALLY good prices. One of the real finds in North County. I recommend them highly -- but please don't actually go. I want them to myself. read more
