BAIT AND SWITCH I came here as a recommendation from the bridal store I bought my wedding dress from. I called pro hems and they quoted me from $250-$375 depending on the gown. Since they came as a recommendation, I decided to take the 45 min drive to pro hems to dry clean my gown. I wanted to make sure it was done right. I arrive, and the lady inspects it. She repeats the same prices and told me she would let me know because the team had to inspect it. That should have been my first clue. I don't believe they dry clean in house. She also notices the zipper is broken and quotes me $40 for the zipper. The following week I get a text message that the cost of the gown would be $500. The zipper is now $75 to replace. At this point I'm pretty upset. If there is a possibility of charging this much, it should have been stated. The only reason I decided to agree was because it wasn't worth driving almost an hour to pick it up and take it somewhere else. She told me she would fix the zipper for free. When I went to pay the total came out to $525. I was confused again. Tax makes sense, but what about the extra dollars? Then she told me we charge a credit card fee. Once again 0 transparency. The people are nice. The quality of work is good. The prices are insane. I was here a year or so ago and the pricing was reasonable...but apparently not anymore. I dropped 2 light jackets (along the lines of blazers) for cleaning and also needed a simple seam sewn (approximately 3 inches of sewing on a regular exposed seam on the inside of the sleeve; I could have done it in under 5 mins at home). The price? $90. ~$40 to dry clean a blazer?! Insane. I regret not asking for detailed pricing before dropping off. Will find a new place as being ripped off isn't a favorite past time of mine. read more

I had looked at Yelp and decided to try this place for alterations of my daughters jeans. She is a tween and growing in height quite fast. But her waist has been staying the same. We decided to get her two pair of adult jeans at Seven as an investment that were 6 inches too long for her so we can take out the leg often as she grows. These are really nice expensive jeans. I told Zhila that the jeans needed to have two inches cut off the bottom and to please tuck under the 4 inches so we could take them out as she grew. The hem was a 2" hem at the bottom so she only needed to fold it and sew it at the two inch mark and it would look like the original hem. She said she understood and did I want the hem to look like the original and I said yes, the two inch looking hem is what I want and it will hide the bulk of the folded material. The cost was $38 each to hem them, I paid $76 dollars total for the alterations. When I returned 5 days later at first glance they looked okay because they looked like when we left with the 2" hem line but when we got home I looked at them and was appalled. She had cut the pants clean off at the 6" mark and then trimmed 4 inches off the pants and sewed the original base right back on the pants that made it look similar to the original style but without and material to take out when she grows. There is no extending the pants at all. It completely defeated the purpose of us getting these two pairs of pants. I am so disappointed we spent not only the money for the jeans but $76 for the alterations and they may not even last more than 5 months. I can't even imagine what she was thinking cutting off the 4 inches, I have honestly never seen anyone do anything like that. read more

Unfortunately, I didn't realize it til it was too late that this place was under new ownership. Had I known and read the Yelp reviews beforehand, I would've taken the pants elsewhere for a better price. Took 2 pairs of casual, linen blend pants for a simple hem because they were a couple inches too long. Cost to hem: One of the pants was a solid color and cost $18.00 and the other one was stripped and that cost $18.75. It took 6 days to get them back. I was shocked by their pricing because I've never paid that much for just a simple hem. The alterations costs more than the pants! Although the ladies that work there were nice and got the job done, I know I can go elsewhere for less for the same quality & service. read more

Wow, their prices have sky rocketed!! My husband took some pants in for hem last year and pricing was under $20. My daughter dropped off a pair of pants for a basic straight hem and the price is now $30 plus $20 rush fee to get them within 5 days. Unfortunately we didn't have time to go to my normal seamstress in Encinitas who would do it for $15 and no extra charge for "rush" because 5 days is about her standard turn around time for a basic hem. I understand that business costs have increased but $50 for a basic hem is beyond ridiculous! read more

Brought a jacket here for prom. Called before going and spoke to owner. I asked if they could do it by that Saturday and she said yes. She said they normally charge a rush fee but that if I brought the jacket in she wouldn't charge it. So we did a couple of hours later. And as we're checking out she charges me a rush fee. I reminded her of our conversation and she tells me she remembers speaking to me but that she said no such thing. I would have brought the jacket in regardless. It needed to get done. But she essentially called me a liar. Repeatedly. And I hadn't even asked for her to waive anything. She offered! Ugh. I didn't argue, just paid. Whatever. They did an ok job. I had a couple terry cloth seat covers that needed altering and Zhila had some great ideas about how best to design what was needed and they turned out great. Pro Hems was not the closest tailor to me, but they were the easiest to work with. They responded quickly to my Yelp quote request and were able to meet my turnaround deadline of 5 days. I had to have 2 straight leg pants hemmed to skinny leg (shut up, skinny leg is still cool), and they quoted me $48 for both. Kathy's Tailoring in Oside wanted to charge me $56 EACH! They text you when it's ready for pick up, and my pants were a day before scheduled. The studio is nice, the people working there are lovely, and the price is very reasonable. The sweet and talented ladies at Pro Hems tailored a vintage jacket that had been in my family for generations; to fit me like it was always meant to. They removed a stain (ink pen) that I had gotten on the jacket back in '88; I was convinced long ago that stain was never coming out: but they removed it! Finally; I had lost the original button years ago; they voluntarily presented a variety of buttons to me, one of which was a near perfect match, and attached it in minutes. Brought several items of clothing to be altered. One pair of pants needed taking in at waist. They did a good job with the taking in, however, neglected to replace the belt hoop on the back. Didn't notice till I put the pants on a week later. So, now pants can't be warn with a belt. Another pair needed the clip/hook at waist to be sewn back on more securely. It's secure now, however, it's sewn to far in that the hook is off. Again, I didn't notice till weeks later when I went to wear the pants. Lesson to self: Try on before leaving the shop! Also, I think it would serve better to once in awhile thank someone for a 5 star review rather than only replying and defending to lesser starred reviews . read more

If I would give the place a zero I would. I use to come here all the time when it was the old owners. These new owners are rude, overcharge, and take advantage of people. I came in once for a dress hem and wanted to charge me 150, mind you I paid 129 for my dress. I ended up taking it somewhere else where they charged me 35. My mom and sister came here one last time. Andcompletely over charged here for her hem, charging her $400. My mother said just this last time because even she felt taken advantage now. Everytime we were coming in. I felt they kept changing us more and more. Honestly I wouldnt come here again. There so many more places around with reasonable prices. And you can never tell them when you need your item by or else they will also charge you a rush fee. I learned this the hard way. They also spoke bad about the previous owners saying they lost their business. When in reality they sold it because they wanted to move closer to their family. Overall don't go here unless your ready to spend your whole paycheck or the same amount of the dress. read more

I needed a bench cushion altered that I had purchased online, resized and sewn, they took the time to make sure I got exactly what I wanted and made the measurements EXACT. I couldn't be happier. I got the same pair of pants zipper fixed about two months ago and all of a sudden it was $4 more dollars and I asked why did it go up and she told me that the price of zippers are more expensive and I'm like seriously? Their pricing is three times the cost of local studios. don't waste your time unless you want to be taken advantage of. Just really appalled at the way this place overcharges. I used to go to Esther and it was much more reasonable before ownership changed. I've taken several garments here since for alteration and paid extremely large amounts for simple hems. The last straw was when they quoted me at $45 for a basic hem.
