Looking for great chicken? We had been to Don Chicken once before and were pretty happy with it, so finding ourselves near H-Mart in the early afternoon, decided to go back for lunch. My general rule of thumb for restaurants is to either try the thing they're famous for or, if they're not famous, something I couldn't make at home or have never had before. When we saw the ppurings (#7), we had a decision. We got a heaping pile of wings with a lot of what looked like seasoned breadcrumbs. It was not seasoned breadcrumbs. On a recent trip to Austin we stopped at an H Mart to grab some fruit and bottled water to take with us on a day of exploring. We planned to get lunch somewhere else, but the food court had so much variety we ended up staying. She went to a noodle stall for jjangmyeon. I spied Don Chicken and had to get my KFC fix. Don Chicken is a Korean fried chicken chain headquartered in Seoul, with over 300 locations in the home country. Here in the US they are a franchise. This was my first visit to one so for comparison I ordered something I would get an any other KFC joint I frequent. They offer the standard varieties of chicken: 1) Crispy; 2) Soy Garlic; 3) Hot Spicy; 4) Sweet & Spicy. While they sell the chicken in packs they also offer combos. I selected Combo #1, six wings sweet & spicy with fries and coleslaw. With tax it came to less than $12. I thought this was very reasonable. I took a buzzer and found a seat. Austin is known as "The Music Capital of the World" and this food court inside H Mart appeared to be set up for live music with a stage and PA system. What kind of music would they play in H Mart? Oh please please let it be live K-Pop. Yeah, I know, probably not likely so far from Korea, but in my mind I'm going to manifest it. This day they were playing K-Pop Christmas songs on a projection screen instead. The food was ready in about 10 minutes. Picking up my tray from the counter I immediately noticed the large portion of fries. They didn't have ketchup, but not to fear, there was an abundance of glistening sweet & spicy sauce on my wings. I would be able do do some dunkage in my chicken basket. The chicken was cooked to perfection. The wings were plump and juicy inside. The crunch on the chicken was incredible and stood up even drowned in sauce. The sauce was delicious, more on the sweet honey side but still a little tangy. The fries were pretty standard, which is to say good. I didn't eat the cole slaw, (I have a thing about only eating it if I make it myself) but she had no problem plucking it off my tray and mawing through it approvingly. I went to the public restroom after my meal to wash all the stickiness off my hands and looking in the mirror saw that orange sweet sticky sauce on my cheeks and chin. It reminded me of that Kool-aid mustache you would get as a kid. This meal was officially a win. I dove in and got it all over me and came up full and satisfied. Decided to try this place after finishing a quick shopping trip at H-Mart, partly because it looked quite tasty while browsing the food court. I ordered the Sweet & Spicy chicken drumstick combo meal, and it was quite decent. The portions are generous (3 good-sized chicken drumsticks with crinkle fries and a small cup of cole slaw) and is reasonably priced ($11.99). The chicken tasted fine, although it was quite messy to eat and there wasn't a whole lot of flavor once you get down to the meat. Fries were fresh and hot, but I thought the cole slaw wasn't anything special. Keep in mind that you'll have to purchase beverages from another vendor -- no complaints there, as there is a dedicated place in the food court that sells all sorts of bottled drinks, including a couple of domestic beers for 99 cents a bottle/can.
