Fluke with uni
Kevin Y.

First time trying Domo Sushi last night and I thought it was great! Fish was fresh and the flavors from the garnishes weren't overwhelming- they complemented the fish flavor well. There was a good variety of fish prepared in different ways (torched, smoked under a dome, mixed together with sauces). My favorite pieces were the shrimp with foie gras (and some ingredient name I didn't recognize), kanpachi with yuzu, amberjack with cilantro, and the ocean trout with tomato and radish. The shrimp itself was incredibly flavorful but the taste from the other ingredients and/or the sauce was completely new to me and made it one of the main highlights of the night. The kanpachi was cut noticeably thicker than what I've had at other places and seasoned accordingly. The amberjack with cilantro pairing was unique for me as well, just not as unique as the shrimp. And I always like a good, fatty ocean trout or salmon with tomato piece. A recurring theme here is the chef is generous with the fish and ingredients like uni and truffle, knows what flavors work well together, and does a good job making each course presentable/appealing. I also had the Sumo set this time and ymmv but the few extra pieces took away a bit from my overall experience with the food. The extra pieces I had were fluke with uni, black cod with truffle and caviar, a5 wagyu with foie gras, and anago (specific type of eel). A lot of these pieces felt like repeats of pieces earlier on in the meal and were too rich for me. Just a matter of personal preference, I would've liked more white fish with light, refreshing flavors but I know a lot of people enjoy the richness of otoro, wagyu, etc better. The other highlights of the night were the matcha panna cotta dessert and the interactions I had with the owner's wife and other customers. The panna cotta was velvety smooth and had just the right amount of sweetness with the slight bitterness from the matcha balancing it out. I have been searching for dessert spots that might serve something similar haha. And everyone was so sweet and friendly- it was really heartwarming Overall Domo Sushi has become one of my favorite omakase spots in the city and I highly recommend any omakase lover to give them a try

As a long time patron (since 2022) of Domo, please visit Domo at least once if you love sushi, especially omakase. Everyone I recommended to only had exceptional things to say about Domo, some even actually say they have a religious experience there. Chef Jiro puts his love and care for each piece and there's never a bad piece I've ever tasted from him. Every dish is a work of art and is not surprising considering his vast culinary background and his love for art as a hobby. But let's be honest, Sally's homemade matcha panna cotta and friendly personality is what actually will bring you back every time.

This is not just my favorite omakase in NYC but my favorite restaurant period. I've been a loyal fan for years, since back when they had the prior Mott St location. I come here as often as I can and I'll use any special occasion (birthdays, new job, out-of-town visitors, etc.) as a reason to go celebrate at Domo. My friends and I are so obsessed with this place that we refer to it as "going to church" because every dinner is a religious experience. When we partake of the Lord's table, we praise, worship, speak in tongues, confess, repent, and leave with a renewed sense of purpose. The whole staff is sweet, friendly, and wonderful. Jiro is my hero. He's the head chef and I think he's a genius. I love how he combines different complementary/contrasting flavors and textures: if there's soft he'll add crunch, if there's sweet he'll add bitter. Seating is limited, which is ideal because it's never too crowded or rushed. I sometimes end up having friendly chats with the people seated next to me, which creates a welcoming and communal atmosphere that is really rare and lovely. This place is so amazing it gives me an existential crisis (in a good way) because the rest of my life can't compare. It's a delicious, masterful, hedonistic experience and I can't recommend it highly enough.

It was absolutely delicious. I have been omakase-ing for over a decade and this by far is one of my favorite. The unique culinary style and craft put into it, the presentation, the quality-it checked all the boxes for me. One chef, one waitress. Nothing extra needed. My one suggestion might be to have a bigger variety of dessert, my husband does not eat coconut and there weren't any alternatives for him, two for me so I still win!

Wagyu and gold flakes. Dec 18, 2024. 29th street location.

Domo omakase is my all time favorite restaurant-- across not just sushi restaurants but any food establishment. I've been here at least a dozen times and I keep coming back for more. I tell everyone I know how much I love this place. If you're thinking of coming, come! It's been absolutely worth it every time. This restaurant serves omakase; in other words, I trust the chef to select the fish for me, as opposed to choosing off of a menu that lists the available fish. Every time I go, chef has cooked up some new seasonal items. I am always surprised by the new crafts and pleased with the classics. Sometimes I feel nostalgia for a piece I had once or twice before, but hasn't come back into the menu rotation since. The pieces are mainly raw, seasonal fresh fish, plus wasabi, plus chef's special seasonings. Some pieces are seared or smoked. Some pieces come fully cooked, such as the anago. All taste lovely. If you're not a fan of wasabi, you may ask to exclude it. Pickled ginger is served on the side. You won't see soy sauce for dipping here; you won't need it anyway. My hunger levels are satisfied and sometimes really full after eating the standard course. I always look forward to hot tea and the matcha panna cotta dessert at the end as well! For drinks, they now serve alcohol with selections available from a drinks menu. The new location on 29th street is much more cozy and relaxing than the stall inside the busy Mott Street Eatery. While the stall experience definitely made for some fun times, the new location is welcoming and attuned to the owners' tastes (in art and food). I am looking forward to coming back again and again.

Omakase - 13th

Need a casual dining experience that is still titillating to the taste buds? Sushi Chef Jiro's omakase experience will not disappoint your stomach nor eyes! The price point is also something your wallet will be pleased with, too. Tucked away in an unassuming small food court, the 3-seat countertop offers diners an up close view of each of the 14 pieces being created (with concern for individual diner's dietary restrictions/allergies, too). Refreshing (complimentary) hot green tea was served with our meal. And don't be afraid to use your hands to pick up the nigiri... as you can see from the photos, some of the nigiri is stacked rather delicately and not conducive for less-than-skilled chopsticks users to test their hand at balancing acts. My friend and I watched on as our nigiri was flambéed, infused with smoke, and shaped into delectable works of art. And let me tell you... the fresh-tasting fish, caviar, truffles, rice, and other culinary elements well-exceeded every one of our expectations!!! My friend even started 'happy fat kid' humming midway through the meal. I also greatly appreciated the conversation held with Jiro and his wife--they spoke Mandarin Chinese, which was a pleasant surprise! Service, food, value...everything was wonderful, and I am still dreaming of this Jiro's sushi (albeit, he's not the famous Jiro from a well-known documentary). Can't wait to visit NYC and Domo Sushi again in the future!!!!

Coconut Panna Cotta

Make reservations ahead of time! We had a party of 6 and we were able to sit by the counter. The staffs were friendly and omakase were delicious! It is located in a food court and we went with live music. The dessert matcha coconut panna cotta was delicious and creamy. Would recommend coming here again, pay cash to avoid credit card surcharge.

favorite omakase in new york, chef jiro always impresses. have been following since the 4-seater in chinatown food court days. the current location is a beautiful venue!

What a gem!! Unique omakase experience, where the restaurant is located inside Mott street food court. The restaurant has a total a of 3 seats at the counter. Very intimate! Out of all the omakase places I have tried (about ~12 places to date) this one definitely is one of my favorites! Staff are very polite and inviting! We bowed to each other like 20 times throughout dinner! Super sweet lady working besides the chef! Chef Jiro uses top quality and freshest ingredients. Each piece was beautifully crafted, leaving u moaning for more. I can't stop thinking about it! I cannot wait to be back! Call for reservations! $60 for 9 pieces; $100 for 13!

New location, but same great sushi, atmosphere, and service. Will definitely keep coming back. Congratulations on the new location, Chef Jiro.

Came here with a good friend because we saw the high reviews, and thought the $100 Omakase was a good deal for what you get. It came with 13 courses, plus a hand roll and a dessert. This little unassuming sushi bar has very tasty sushi with high quality fish, and awesome boujee seasonal toppings. I always enjoy truffles, caviar, foie gras, and gold flakes though I know the latter is probably a hot take as it adds nothing outside of style, but it jus looks so cool . Most importantly, the fish itself is never overpowered and always feels like the main feature. I also loved the dessert - a super creamy and not overly sweet matcha panna cotta that was made fresh in house. I think this was a perfect amount to leave satisfied and not overly full. Having done 8 piece and even 20 piece Omakase before, this is definitely a happy medium. Our sushi chef (I believe the owner?) was cool and funny too! He was super busy making takeout orders for others in between our courses, but he still answered any questions we asked. Maybe you won't get as much of a full conversational experience as you could elsewhere, but that's why we bring friends anyway right? Overall solid recommendation from me, 5/5

The presentation of the food is like a work of art. The food looks beautiful, and it taste amazing. The chef and wait staff are very friendly and attentive. The ambiance is simple yet elegant. I would definitely come back. This place is totally worth it. This is my go to place for omakase and the dessert, matcha panna cotta, is to die for.

The atmosphere here was a bit more lively and crowded compared to the more relaxed vibe of the UWS spot. I enjoyed my meal even more this time around. I started with the beet salad, which was delicious and offered great value given the generous portion size. it featured sliced beets, arugula, goat cheese, and walnuts. I also had my eye on the hijiki soybean salad--which is a bit smaller and reportedly homemade--so I may try that next time, along with the warm mushroom salad which looked very tasty. The edamame was standard but served as a nice starter. For my main rolls, I chose the salmon avocado and the yellowtail scallion. Both were very fresh and definitely worth ordering again. The salmon avocado roll had a nice touch of sesame seeds on the rice, while the yellowtail scallion was prepared with the seaweed on the outside. My boyfriend's sushi entree looked excellent, so I am considering that or the sushi-sashimi combo for my next visit. The entrees provide a substantial amount of food, and I especially appreciate that they allow you to choose which roll comes with your meal.

They share a takeout menu and it's super easy to order--text what you want to the phone number on the website and pickup in ~20 minutes :). The only one I know of is hefty but also $200 each lol, making Sanyuu's $69 omakase and $78 Everything don, not to mention the $30 giant salmon nigiri set, A STEAL! I enjoyed most of the pieces but I will say I don't like their amaebi or uni at all. I'm not sure what kind of uni is used here but it's the type with a very strong mineral flavor & aftertaste that I don't find enjoyable. We're spoiled by easy access to live spot prawns everywhere and fresh SB uni. Despite this, I wouldn't hesitate to come back if I lived in the city.

To be honest, I was getting a little nauseated after 5 pieces, haha~ They were definitely delicious but I'd probably just eat 3 or 4 pieces and share with a friend! It was easy to text the number on the website and coordinate a pickup time, and the staff was friendly when I arrived.
