We have eaten a Dolli's several times and it is always busy. This visit was no different. However, service was marginal. Several apologies later, we finally got our food. I had the BLT with the optional egg and it was okay, nothing to write home about. Coffee was good. Restaurant and toilets were clean and from the sign posted in the men's room, it is highly rated (lol). Nothing like some bathroom humor! Right in the center of downtown is a corner cafe that is full of friendly smiles as well as loyal people who obviously frequent the place and even have their regular tables. Makes you feel like you're in a Texas country town for sure! My daughter and I were in Nacogdoches for college visit to SFA and we looked this place up in the hopes that we would find something different than a normal chain stop. It certainly is different and was exactly what you might imagine. Everything on the menu is decently priced and it seems that Tuesday is the place to be with short stack specials for $2 along with the weekday breakfast special at $6.95 On of my daughter's favorite meals is chicken fried steak and what better place to try that than a local diner??? Unfortunately it fell below expectations. The portions were quite large, enough that we could have just split a plate. The idea of sausage gravy on top of the mashed potatos and steak sounds heavy but also potentially fantastic. However both the gravy and the fry were quite under seasoned. I was able to fix mine with some cholula sauce and some salt and pepper was a quick fix as well for my daughter. The side of green beans and carrots she got were actually pretty good so perhaps there was just a disconnect in flavor at the meat station this day. I did very much enjoy the side salad I chose instead of the veggie medley. Came with home-made ranch which brought me back to my East Texas family gatherings with the freshly shaken ranch.....it was great. The portion size was pretty fair value at $13. Like I said we could have just split it between us. Very hit or miss flavors leaves this at a 3-stars for me. But no doubt some of the nicest folks in town work here. read more

Dolli's is great! I went there and had breakfast with a work associate, and the service and food could not have been any better! 3 Omelette (Bacon, cheddar cheese, spinach& Mushroom) was perfect! It came with potatoes and a biscuit . The Trucker had 3 meats (Bacon, Sausage & Ham) along with eggs, potatoes and toast. I'm not sure you would go wrong ordering anything here, it all looks good. The food was delicious. I got the create your own omelette with extra cheese and bacon. I will say, though if I were to go here again, I probably would get a different type of cheese rather than American. Also, I might just get the French toast. I tried it from my mom's sandwich, which was some sort of French toast sandwich with egg and ham in between and I have to say the French toast is pretty good. Yum! Mom had breakfast special 2 and dad 3. Both enjoyed them immensely. They were a great deal at 6.95 each and included coffee. I got the corned beef hash with eggs. It was a bit more expensive at 12.95. It was a ton of food though! Between the 3 eggs, corned beef hash and the skillet potatoes it was a mountain! The corned beef hash was excellent but I do wish there had been a bit more of it. Not that there wasn't enough but that was really why I picked that plate. I have been in the area on bidness a good bit and this is the first recommendation I received from a local that I actually wanted to check out since it was not a fast casual chain closer to the college that was going to be mobbed with college students trying to get a quick bite between games of Beirut or whatever college students do these days. It is next door to City Hall and the firehouse, in ye olde town square. There is a lot of free parking nearby, but since this passes for the high density city centre other people are also coming here, not just you. The first time I attempted to do lunch here there was no parking available among all of that free parking and I even circled the blocks for a while until I finally just went back to the hotel and tried another day. So another day I came back and there was parking available. If at first you don't succeed ... When I first walked in I liked that they had appropriate signage in front that you needed to wait to be seated. Without appropriate signage it is just anarchy. As I was getting seated I saw trash all over the floor underneath some tables along the left wall and those tables looked dirty. When I got seated in the center aisle, my table was a bit sticky, but at least not covered in trash up above or down below. So I suppose that is some of the charm of this joint, if not also the Betty Boop tchotchkes everywhere. The server was a pleasant, attentive young man. I waited what seemed a good long while for my salad. The Cobb salad at $10 was fairly priced with reasonably fresh ingredients. The chicken was bland but it is a salad that you have ordered from a diner with a sticky tabletop so everything about the ambiance and the numerous Betty Books glaring at you should tell you that most people do not mosey on in here and order a salad, everyone else and their mother are getting the pancakes or other things you slather with a bunch of syrup, just like that Three Six Mafia tune. However, this soyboy charts his own path and wanted a salad, presumably the one non-sticky entree ever devoured upon this table. The location in town cannot be beat. The servers are friendly and accommodating. If you are a fan of the Bob's Burgers teevee programme you have heard of a greasy spoon type of place before, well this is a sticky tabletop type of place so your mileage may vary if you order anything that does not need syrup on it. For a salad in this area from a local joint, rather than something out of the various fast foods dotting the area around the SFA campus down the road, you could not do better than here. Things I wished someone explained to me: why all the Betty Boops up in here. The place is called Dolli, not Betty. I need someone to explain this to me because I have an active imagination and I assume the truth is much more interesting than anything I could come up with. read more

We stopped in to try their lunch before heading home to Round Rock. The chili was good but could use more ground beef. The bacon cheeseburger was excellent. Bacon had a really nice taste that added to burger. The Buffalo Chicken sandwich was lacking in the Buffalo sauce and really needs to be dipped in the sauce to adequately satisfy the Buffalo Chicken flavor. The chicken breast is delicious and had a great batter coating. They definitely have the batter and I bet chicken fried steak is excellent. It was hard to choose between breakfast or lunch, but Hubby and I settled on lunch. I had the Rueben and Hubby the burger. It was made with iceberg lettuce, with huge chunks of the hard white part of the lettuce which is bitter. Plus, the actual core of the lettuce head where it was cut from the plant! I told the waitress and all she said was 'oh'. So, that's a mistake that won't happen again. My sister ordered a BLT. There was tons of lettuce on it and the toast was soggy with butter/oil. I was passing through and had a craving for good diner food. I found Dolli's and even though there was a wait for a table I decided the menu looked good enough to stick it out. I was not disappointed! The waitress, Zea, was very attentive despite the busy lunch hour and kept my coffee topped off. This is not the fault of the establishment; however, our waitress offered to take it off the bill. I didn't allow this to happen, again it is not their taste buds; it is mine. 4.5 stars We went on a Saturday and we're told it would be a 30 minute wait. The hostess took our name and number and told us she would call us when our table was ready. Luckily downtown Nac has plenty to do! We didn't even realize how much time had passed when they called. Waitstaff wipe down the tables but don't move the items that stay on the table (condiments, napkins, etc.). I thought that was a little gross since I frequently move those when I sit. All of the high chairs and booster seats were taken and our waitress said she would bring us one when one became available. We proceeded to wait another hour and a half for food we then had to get our food Togo. While looking through our order we were excused from our table. As if we had not paid and left a decent tip. After they kicked us out of our table we kindly asked for a new one. They refused, even with 3 open tables. Apparently since they already had our money we were not a priority anymore. Came here while on a weekend trip to Nacogdoches and HOLY SMOKES we were beyond impressed with everything from the food to the service. Our waitress Malisia was absolutely fantastic. She was very kind, very professional, and very speedy despite the restaurant being VERY busy. On top of that she made sure to be very careful pouring coffee around my 2 year old so he didn't reach for the cup and hurt himself. Her service definitely made this a wonderful experience. My experience at Dolli's Diner is limited to one visit for breakfast service, so I can offer no commentary on the hand-pattied beef burgers, thick shakes, and homemade cakes and pies referenced by myriad other Yelpers. I prefer to visit a restaurant a minimum of three times before writing a review, but who knows if or when I will ever return to this charming little diner. Housed in the historic Annie Hoya building (erected in 1900) in downtown Nacogdoches, Dolli's Diner served up a hearty, no-frills breakfast on my recent trip through East Texas. Our bespectacled, sylphlike waitress (Dolli herself, perhaps?) was attentive and ingratiating, a feat considering the number of tables she was handling. She appeared to be on a first-name basis with several local yokels, a sign that this joint is worthy of repeat patronage. I'm always leery of waitstaff who commit orders to memory (for memory is not to be trusted), but she remembered everything, including my gluttonous request for extra cheddar, jalapeños, and chorizo in my Mexican omelette. The omelette in question was a thing of beauty: fluffy, cheesy (shredded cheddar inside, a slice of processed Monterrey Jack outside), and stuffed generously with cumin-accented Mexican chorizo and bits of fresh, crisp vein-in jalapeños. So many breakfast joints screw up the humble omelette (see my review of the Trading Post Restaurant in Kit Carson, CO), so I applaud a cook armed with a whisk and a copy of Julia Child's canonical French omelette recipe. Dame Julia's trick involves adding small knobs of cold butter to a beaten egg prior to cooking the mixture. The melting butter acts as a buffer between the protein in the egg, resulting in an omelette with a light, pillowy texture. The late Dr. Magnus Pyke would cry "Science!", but I attribute the deliciousness to culinary alchemy. All breakfast plates include home fries and a choice of toast (white, wheat, or sourdough). The home fries were crisp and golden brown on the outside and soft on the inside. I would have preferred them with lots of caramelized onions, but I nitpick. Less forgivable were three slices of store-bought wheat toast saturated in a greasy substance tasting of Country Crock. I wouldn't expect a kitchen so small to bake its own bread, but surely Dolli could source her hearth from a local bakery. At a minimum, enter the 21st century and offer real butter. Is Dolli's Diner a destination joint, the quirky kind of place that Guy Fieri might showcase and then curse forever on "Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives"? No. Is Dolli's Diner worth a stop for breakfast while visiting Nacodoches, Texas? Absolutely! I debated if this place was special enough to warrant a Ryan M. review, but then I noticed that one of my photos (my dad's pedestrian breakfast of flapjacks, bacon, and eggs) was the featured picture here on Yelp. A photograph of such quality -- a textbook example of how to frame and light a plate of food -- deserved an accompanying review of equal merit. Modesty be damned! read more
