1st City Cafe - Fredonia fish and chips

This cafe was so good! It's inside the Fredonia Hotel. I love the mid century mod vibe. It's…read moredefinitely a little pricier, but at least the food quality matches. My mom and I got the shrimp and grits! Chefs kiss! It was amazing! My husband kept trying to steal bites! My husband got the Korean tacos, they were also tasty. He just said a little too greasy. The waitress was very sweet and patient with my hyped up kids. Grandma must have sugared them up before returning the to us!!! we will be back.

That said, if there's a reason o deviate 3 hours from Houston, dinner at this hotel restaurant might just be it! This place is an absolute hidden gem in perhaps the nicest hotel in town. Waitstaff are all friendly and attentive, and the ambience is clown albeit a little old perhaps. That said, the food is the star (as it should be) of this establishment! So much so that we came here two nights in a row not bothering to try anything else....moreover, I ordered the same thing both nights: shrimp and grits, Caesar salad (extra croutons), and an assortment of dessert. I wouldn't normally talk about a side salad, but boy have I never had a crouton as delicious as the ones that accompany the Caesar. It's not JUST a crouton, but in fact, a warmed cornbread crouton that's absolutely exquisite. Such an unassuming thing as a crouton changed my world! I wasn't raised on Cajun style cuisine, but the shrimp and grits had to have been one of, if not, THE best I've ever had. From the rich, creamy lick-your-plate-and-spoon sauce, the delicious garlic roll, to the generous portion of shrimp....its worth eating two nights in a row. And then some. As for the dessert, I don't quite remember the appropriate name, but we ordered both the bread pudding and flan. Bread pudding was a perfect sweet end to our meal and easily shared with a table of four. The flan was a rather interesting cheesecake consistency that I personally loved, but might not be for everyone. If there's something I'll remember forever about Nacogdoches, it'll be this restaurant!

Dolli's Diner - A celebrity decided to have lunch at Dollie's today. It was pleased so it didn't eat any body.

I had the BLT with the optional egg and it was okay, nothing to write home about. Coffee was good. Restaurant and toilets were clean and from the sign posted in the men's room, it is highly rated (lol). Nothing like some bathroom humor! We will certainly be back as we are always hopefully that today was an anomaly.

Makes you feel like you're in a Texas country town for sure! My daughter and I were in Nacogdoches for college visit to SFA and we looked this place up in the hopes that we would find something different than a normal chain stop. It certainly is different and was exactly what you might imagine. Everything on the menu is decently priced and it seems that Tuesday is the place to be with short stack specials for $2 along with the weekday breakfast special at $6.95 On of my daughter's favorite meals is chicken fried steak and what better place to try that than a local diner??? Unfortunately it fell below expectations. The portions were quite large, enough that we could have just split a plate. The idea of sausage gravy on top of the mashed potatos and steak sounds heavy but also potentially fantastic. However both the gravy and the fry were quite under seasoned. I was able to fix mine with some cholula sauce and some salt and pepper was a quick fix as well for my daughter. The side of green beans and carrots she got were actually pretty good so perhaps there was just a disconnect in flavor at the meat station this day. I did very much enjoy the side salad I chose instead of the veggie medley. Came with home-made ranch which brought me back to my East Texas family gatherings with the freshly shaken ranch.....it was great. The portion size was pretty fair value at $13. Like I said we could have just split it between us. Very hit or miss flavors leaves this at a 3-stars for me. But no doubt some of the nicest folks in town work here.

Blue Horse Bakery - Fudge bacon brownie that was sans fudginess or bacon flavor as far as I could discern.

Top Line: Picked up a Blue Horse fudge bacon brownie $6 at Brendyn's BBQ yesterday along with a meal, saving the brownie as a treat for today. So returned to Brendyn's this afternoon to get tea for eating the brownie. Brownie is seriously heavy!! Very, very moist beneath the layer of baby chocolate chips and extraordinarily tender of crumb. Too much so I found. The block of chocolate cake-like brownie crumbled into pieces as I tried to pick it up. I finally resorted to pinching off small wads of it to pop into my mouth. While being very moist with oil density, the flavor profile was about on par with a supermarket bakery brownie. Plenty of chocolate taste, but minimal (if any) bacon smokiness shining through. Fudge's buttery brown sugar sweetness or cream's richness were likewise AWOL. So I'd say this was a decent $2.50 brownie. But nowhere near justifying the $6 ticket price I paid to get it, in spite of its moistness. If I'm in the neighborhood of Blue Horse's sticks 'n bricks location I may hit them up for a cupcake or some such to see how that flies. But no more brownies from them for me.

I'm not sure why they made it so tall either, is that an "IN" thing? It was hard to cut and honestly didn't even fit a dessert plate LOL. I dunno maybe there's a way to cut that style. My request was last mintute but I don't really thing it would've been a big deal anyway because they had duplicates already on the table. It was okay, I wouldn't order it again though TBH. It's a cute bakery but there needs to be a few improvements on taste/texture. The coffee isn't that great either but there's not really a lot of options around. I know the next day after the Festival there was a coffee truck on the main square and that was GOOD! I can't remember the name of it but if there's a coffee truck in that area, they serve some BAD AS coffee!
