this kind of review seems a bit risky to write, as i hate the possibility it might well sully and discredit my reputation for having a keen sense of taste in regard to good things. (i'm ignoring here the aesthetic we refer to as "taste" being something that can be applied to the bad as well as the good, as in "it's so bad it's good"). but i get past that concern knowing i wouldn't write here in the first place if i didn't include places that will never be on a "best of..." list, places you get to walking down poorly lit streets, near the railroad tracks... places like this. don't be mislead though, this isn't my regular beat. my tastes may be pedestrian but i know and enjoy good places to get fed or drunk, luxury hotels with midnight room service, etc. but shopping here embraces another side, my incurable need to bottom-feed for generics at places like the dollar tree, aka family dollar, aka 99 cent store, grocery outlet, etc etc etc. what can i say, except remind those who've paid attention that i lived many formative years near the corner of bowery and canal streets on the lower east side of manhattan. most don't go there with silver spoon in mouth, and to paraphrase an old saw, you can take the boy from canal street but not canal street from the boy. i should in fact be writing about that neighborhood instead because that's where the best of the best shopping at low tide is found. the area actually extends anywhere around the lower fringes of soho and points east, into both chinatown and the old jewish tenement neighborhood which, by the way, is where i got my first job as a winemaker - at shapiro's kosher winery on rivington street, another quite bizarre story. but let's stay here for the moment, what exactly is the point of shopping in a store where everything costs $1? perhaps a cheap thrill of sorts, rub elbows and otherwise feel solidarity with those who genuinely have little choice but to come here? well, yeah truth to tell there is some of that, revisiting early less well-heeled circumstances in life. there were years back then when this kind of thing wasn't a thrill at all, rather true necessity. in fact, truth be told i still find myself looking along highway sideroads where, failing to hitch a ride after the sun began to sink, i'd be thinking very seriously about bedding down, behind a thick stand of bushes or even under a friendly and deserted bridge overpass. anyway that was years ago, but such good years they were, ho ho. so what's the point of coming here now, a place most are unlikely ever to enter, unwashed as it may seem? well, that depends on whether or not you're conditioned to buy "famous" aluminum foil, or feel your toothpaste lacks something if you haven't seen its big-smile teevee commercial, or question the safety of a product that costs a fraction of the going rate? do you need your consumer staples to have brand name fame and notoriety, the kind ginned up by marketers to make buying it somehow hot for you? it's really ok if you answer yes to these questions, realizing of course that this brand celebrity and fluff adds considerable cost to the shelf price, but otherwise there's little difference compared to brand anonymous. in the 60s, the corporate state rather than the deep state was considered the great evil empire that ruled our lives if not the entire universe. later on i made peace with this demon in order to make a comfortable living developing and manufacturing stuff for those same evil empires. from that experience i know firsthand that what goes in the tube or box or bag or bottle is generally the same whether its label is well-known name, or some x-the-unknown nobody name. the latter is often packed at the end of a production run when the amount of product still in the tank exceeds the necessary case pack on order for the brand. so this goes in a tube or box or bottle that you wind up buying off-market here for $1, instead of 5 at cvs. so Is that all there is to why I think it's important for me at least, to be comfortable shopping at places like this? Actually, no, because in truth it speaks to my personal politics. i've never trusted prosperity, it has come and gone from time to time even in this country's history. and i've been around the third world more than my share, some of the worst examples being in unknown parts of eastern europe. i couldn't help realizing how the line between have-lots and have-nothing is thin indeed. I never want to feel so completely entitled to living this american having-lots dream, with 2 chickens in every pot, etc that i forget how quickly we can lose it, and may well do so before the end of days. if so i already know how and where to adjust. welcome to the dollar tree. read more

The fact that I'm even posting a review for Dollar Tree should tell you that it ain't about the money, money... it's about the principle. I purchased 3 holiday themed table cloths prior to Christmas. I attempted to exchange them for 3 regular colored table cloths only to discover that they would not honor the original price ($1) that I had paid (receipt provided) and do a straight one-to-one exchange because my holiday table cloths were now being sold at $0.50. It made zero sense and was absolutely BS that I had to PAY EXTRA to complete the exchange. I had never encountered such a baloney exchange policy. I would understand if it were the reverse and I was trying to exchange them for something that cost more, but they were literally the same price when I bought them. I already paid them and now they wanted me to pay the difference because these table cloths are now half off. None of that should matter when I paid the full price 2 weeks ago! You've already collected my money! I'm almost certain the clerk assisting me did not understand my confusion or why the math didn't add up in the first place. I wasn't going to waste my time arguing or involving a manager because it's not about the money. It's about an awful exchange policy that essentially steals from customers. I don't have high expectations from Dollar Tree in general, but I did expect the exchange to be a simple process in which the amount I paid would be the amount I receive. Buyers should beware of their shady policy and perhaps rethink exchanging since you may run the risk of having to pay for it to even occur. read more

No surprises here. It is what it is. Everything $1. You want affordable, stop here first for party supplies, food, cleaning supplies, whatever. It has it all. What impressed me were the employees. A clerk named ONE would not leave me until we found my item ... and we did and I actually bought 2 more than I came for. Lots of plastic items here from Asia, but the selection is affordable and varied. Ton's of stuff if you have very young children. Finally a shout out to RACHANA my checker. She gave me eye contact, sincerely asked if I was having a good day, smiled throughout the transaction, rang my order quickly asking if I needed a bag, and thanked me. Perfect. I have to admit that I would never write a review for Dollar Tree old management.  The store was a big mess under the older manager. There were lots of boxes everywhere, long waiting cashier lines, no helium for the balloons and undespicable  bathrooms  just to point few problems.... I go there often, at least once per week, to buy art & crafts supplies for my home daycare. The new management led by Vicente Penaloza is making the store at 825 Francisco Blvd West looking so good that actually it's an amazing experience to shop there! The store is organized, looking all nice and clean up.  As of today we can even find helium to inflate the balloons we wish to buy as it was out of stock for so long at that Dollar Tree store location!!  Two thumbs up Vicente & Gloria!! read more

Once you get past the stereotype of the county, you see that most residents do not fit into the demographic of rich people with their castle, BMW, hot tub, Grateful Dead collection, and private marijuana field who would rather keep all the non-Marinites out. A lot of them are looking for the best deal: Why pay $2.50 for an item that you can get for $1? And for them, one of the options is Dollar Tree. Merchandise, it's a typical Dollar Tree: food (frozen and packaged), office supplies, household goods, toys, health care products. All low end, divided between major brands and off-brands. Most are good quality. Those who feel like they're being priced out of the county would say "Thank God for Dollar Tree!" Those people, and others with extra spending money but are still looking for the best deal (if I was living here again, I'd be one of them), are likely to come here in spite of the big negative: It's cramped. The square footage is small, and they're able to pack it all in. This means that the aisles are narrower and there's little open space to maneuver. The parking lot also has little room; a minivan would have a difficult time getting in and out. I'm considering what the company has to work with, though; there are not a lot of places in San Rafael where a discount store can afford the monthly lease payments. You take what you can get. Dollar Tree is a place for people who are not devotees of Mollie Stone's, are not anti-chain store, and want to get the most for their money. You can get more stuff for less moola here. read more

I always come in to the Francisco store in San Rafael every Saturday to turn in my CRV recycle in but Saturday the VA usual manager was not in . When I asked for the manager the Hispanic tall young man stated that he was the manager . He lackadaisically counted my plastic and aluminum can but refused to give me the 25 cents for the 5 glass bottles . I had to keep track of the count because he wasn't . Then he asked if I wanted cash for my recycle as I replied yes(not sure how else I would my money in cash?) he refused to accept the glass and wouldn't give me back the glass bottles and told me to leave or he would call the police. I told him how right ahead call the police please. I sat out front waiting for 15-20 min. for the police to arrive and couldn't wait any longer . At this I guess I will have to report to the head office and file and police report at the station myself. read more

It's a Dollar Tree. Cramped aisles packed with boatloads of stuff for a dollar. Decent customer service and the lines are never too horribly long, especially if you go just after the store opens or just before it closes. I've read reviews that mentioned long lines. Haven't had a problem with that myself. In fact, I just saw the manager open another line when one was getting a bit long. A manager in a Dollar Tree that pays attention to that stuff is OK by me. And the cashiers are always pleasant to me. Three stars for one reason: the parking here sucks. Expect a fender bender. Expect to wait longer in the line to get out of the parking lot than the line in the store. And commuters act like they're pissed off that people are coming out of the parking lot to enter traffic. It's a clusterf#@$. It seems like there should be a better way to arrange the spots. I haven't a clue how. And there's certainly not enough parking. But this is so not the store's fault. The Dollar Trees in Novato are better staffed and a bit more friendly than the San Rafael location. The San Rafael location in particular seems to be consistently understaffed and nothing has done over the years to mitigate the problem. Example: On a Saturday morning, there were many requests for balloons from customers in each of the two lines that were open. Orders of 10 or 12 balloons at a time were holding up one or both of the lines and frustrating the other customers wanting to check out. The manager felt like he was helpless in the situation and offered no solutions to calm down the customers. In general, staffing needs should be analyzed in terms of volume trends during particular times, seasons and days of the week. Here are some ideas that can be escalated to corporate management regarding their balloon issues: 1-If there is more than register open, designate one register as "No balloon orders." (or make only one line that accepts balloon orders so that non-balloon customers are aware of the risks of waiting in that line.) 2-Clear space in the store for a single line that feeds to the next available register that is open. 3-Charge for balloons up front at the register. Create a balloon-only line in the balloon area separate from the registers where customers wait after payment. Staff balloon line with stockers or other non-register staff. Cashiers notify balloon staff when a customer is waiting. Questions about balloon availability are answered by balloon staff. 4. Self checkout lines with video monitoring and weight scales so that non-balloon customers can quickly make their purchases and more people will stop fearing the long lines to get one item - ultimately increasing sales and revenue. As a shopper, be aware and allow for extra time for lines or go to a different Dollar Tree! read more

It's your average Dollar Store. When they first opened the staff was very courteous. For some odd reason they have new staff that do not know the first thing about customer service. On May 9th at 2:20pm clerk: Roxanne was left alone at the store. That's right, the only employee running the store. The line was backed-up and had over 15 customers trying to check-out! The crowd began to voice their opinions and poor Roxanne was very professional, apologized and worked as quickly as possible. We're talking Senior Citizens yelling and babies crying. Roxanne literally had to get on her cell phone to call for help. Come to find out... the other employee was supposed to start work at 2pm and strolled in 20-MINUTES LATE! Can't believe I waited in line at a Dollar Store for over 20 minutes?! I was that close to dropping my items and walking out, luckily I stuck around to find out the cause of the delay. Another visit on May 11th, While I was still shopping, I witnessed a clerk: Christina (not in uniform - Bleached hair and orange nails) rudely talking back to a customer. I didn't want to deal with the same treatment so I dropped my basket and left the store. As I started my car, I saw an employee almost run over a customer! I came in here to see if I could accumulate some fun stuff for my sons upcoming 2nd birthday party. I was walking around adding a few things here n there to my basket. The aisles were crowded with carts stacked almost 7ft high with boxes of candy and other assorted items so I decided to set my basket down on the floor so I could walk around a little bit more freely. Two employees came walking around the corner into the aisle where I was shopping and immediately locked eyes on my basket in the ground and my Monster energy drink j brought in next to it. I politely informed them that it was mine while one of the lady's gave me a nasty look and started speaking in a raised tone of voice in Spanish. I don't know the language very well but enough to hear that she had a problem with my basket on the floor. The other woman just so happened to also be the cashier and oh boy what an ugly scowl she had. I guess putting your basket on the floor is grounds for terrible customer service and dirty looks. This store is terrible! There's boxes everywhere blocking the walkways and those boxes stacked to almost 7ft is an accident waiting to happen. read more

God, I feel bad for the people who work in this store! Whoever owns the store does not seem to care about anyone who shops here and particularly not their employees. This week their cash registers have been broken for almost the entire week, so they can only accept cash, and the lines are about 3 miles long to buy anything. The shelves are poorly stocked. How can you care about your place of work when your employer can't even provide you with the most basic things and when the store is severely understaffed and understocked. These poor people must be dealing with angry complaining people all day long and it's not their fault. This is one of the only dollar stores in Marin, and I understand that a lot of poor people depend on the store for some necessities and home goods. Me personally? This place is hit or miss as far as customer service goes. I've had the friendliest cashiers and the rudest, just depends on what phase the moon is in I guess. There never seems to be enough employees, standing in line for 10-15 minutes in a place that's designed to have no more than 2 customers in each line is irritating. Really one 3 minute transaction pays for each employees hourly wage, at least always have two cashiers open. The store is usually clean and stocked for whatever holiday is going on, great for crafty kids things and cheap goodie bag toys. Never eat the food from here but they seem to have a good selection. Great for party supplies for birthdays and baby showers. Parking is weird, most customers have a hard time figuring out where the lines are or they have to do a 5 point turn to get out of them. read more

One of my favorite dollar stores, yet today I met the rude night time manager. She was sitting in the bench talking with a friend. She tried to humilate the rest of the workers by telling them to do all the work while she was the so called "queen". Once I told her that it was wrong to try to humilate people she told me to shut my mouth. She made my experience horrible and she was treating most of the customers horribly as she did to me.
