Since I moved to LA a couple months ago, I have been coming here for the "manta" regularly. It's the perfect marriage of flavorful lamb and a regular soup dumpling. I love love love having lamb in the winter, and the lamb dishes I have tried so far are all stellar! Highly recommend anyone who appreciates lamb and good service. The food is super tasty. The boiled lamb and grilled lamb were standouts. Not gamey at all. The chicken over noodles was great. If you're ordering the lamb, a veggie and chicken over noodles for 4, it'll be plenty of food. You can add a plate of plain noodles too and it'll be great as leftovers. Try the salted milk tea for something different. I think it'd be perfect in the winter. Also not as sweet as usual milk teas... cuz it's salted (haha). It's rich and creamy and salty. Been here twice. There's some hit or miss dishes. The dishes I don't care for are the polo rice dish...just too "cumin-y" with a funky after taste, the pastry dish was okay but took like 30 minutes to get. It's good but not to the point i would wait that long again. I'm not really a lamb person but everyone around me raved how good it was. And i abbe to admit, there's not a big gamey after taste. Uyghur cuisine is one of those super overlooked cuisines that not many people ever touch on because of how small group of people it is. Western China in my opinion has the best food as it has spiced Chinese style, mixed with grounded middle eastern flavors. Dolan's blew all the expectations out of the water for me. Everything was great and it was such a new experience trying all these new dishes I had no idea existed. Uyghur milk tea: a buttery, creamy, and salted milk tea that reminded me of the non homogenized milk we used to get in India. Absolutely fantastic! Goshnaan: a star highlight for me, super crispy and juicy meat on the inside. Tons of flavor that's just too hard to describe. Laghman: Al dente noodles with perfect tomato sauce and beef. Covid update: Currently they are not open for dine-in, only takeout (or delivery). As someone else mentioned, the staff was not wearing any masks, so be warned. Also, when I was there, none of the staff spoke any English, so I had to stick to Mandarin. They do have a menu with pictures if language is a barrier. Food-wise, the flavors are still robust as I last remembered it, and this time I tried a great pilaf-sort of dish called the Uyghur polo, which was a rice dish with lamb (although the lamb was extremely fatty). What a magical, wonderful night. We had just seen an amazing performance of Cirque Du Soleil and were all eager for dinner. Dolans looked interesting especially because I know so little about the Uyghur world. I know that Uyghurs live in western China, that the Chinese government treats them ruthlessly and that some of the missionaries at our church have spent some time with them. That was it. So walking into the restaurant I was a total greenhorn. We checked out the menu and finally decided on the Big Plate Chicken, a skewer of kebabs, one order of Goshnaan and a plate of spicy fried noodles. The Big Plate Chicken is their most common dish for a reason. It's amazing. Absolutely delicious. It reminded me of Indian food the way the spices and flavors seemed to collide and explode inside your mouth. The noodles were thicker and a bit chewier than I'm accustomed to and the sauce was wonderful. Complex and interesting and utterly toothsome. Is it OK to use that old-timey word? But beware, this can be messy eating, lots of drips. If you're wearing your dress clothes be VERY careful. The Goshnaan and the kebabs were good but we all agreed that the Big Plate Chicken and the spicy noodles were the best things we ordered. We showed an interest and asked a few questions about Uyghurs and the owner, Bughra Arkin, came over. We chatted him up and I confirmed what little I knew. When the topic moved to the Chinese government he explained that his brother, father and uncle had all been disappeared while he was in the US. It was difficult to imagine my brother, Dad and one of my uncles gone without any idea if they were alive.... and if so what their condition might be.... and if there was any hope of their release. It was a sobering, sad counterpoint to an amazing meal. Bughra returned to check on us after dinner. And after a generous dessert came by again and offered us two packets of of a special home blended tea. I was stunned by his generosity and wondered if he'd seen that I had checked in. Sometimes being Elite gets you treated differently. But once I was back in the car I took a look at my phone and realized... I never had checked in. All that kindness and generosity were absolutely real. None of it was motivated by the fact that I'm active on Yelp. The food is amazing and the restaurateur is a joy. This is food you NEED to eat and a kind, generous owner that you MUST meet. read more

Everyone likes chicken, but damn it if this isn't one of the best pieces of chicken I have been lucky enough to eat. Enjoy it with the belly-warming Dolans Special Tea (with cardamom!) and enjoy your spice sweats in their outdoor seating. Continue to eat your way through the goshnaan and samsa (a beef samosa!) and by the end of it you will be comfortably drowsily full. I'd never had Uyghur cuisine before coming here and I'm so glad my gf and I decided to give this place a try because the food was amazing. Remember when you were a kid and you would go up to the soda machine and put a bunch of your familiar, favorite flavors into one cup to make an even better one? That's what eating at this place is like because all the dishes have hints of flavors you've had before but in combinations that you haven't had before. The Uyghur Goshnaan is what would happen if a green onion pancake and a samosa had a delicious baby. The crust is crispy and flaky with a nicely seasoned beef filling with plenty of onion flavor. The Big Plate Chicken is a fun combo of 3 Cup Chicken flavor with traditional hand pulled flat noodles that screams comfort food with just the right amount of heat from the spices in the sauce. The Spicy Fish is full of flavor and while it may be stir-fried according to the menu, it eats more like a traditional steamed fish with tons of flavor from the chilis and green onion. It was the right amount of spice too without being overpowering. The Laghman is like a Lomo Saltado but in noodle form with a bit more sweetness and the noodles are DELICIOUS. It doesn't look like much, but this is arguably my favorite dish there. I'll happily go back and try more things on the menu because everything I've had so far has been fantastic. read more

We asked for dishes to be brought in a certain order - e.g., samsa first, as it is an appetizer dish. This was brought last as we were finishing our meal. We should have been comped this dish, but we did not say anything. Other items came haphazardly. Everyone got their entrees at different times - it seems the staff just bring out the dishes as they are cooked rather than bringing them out in a logical fashion as the customer requested. So, one person had to watch the others eat their meals. Boiled lamb had sliced onions as a garnish, nothing else (not side dish of sauce or noodles or rice). Not sure if this is how the dish is to be eaten, but it is hard to just eat boiled lamb shank with onions. Samsa tasty, but dripping in grease. Beef/lamb for plov was presented as small unappetizing cubes (?) - should be bigger pieces and/or shredded in presentation. I tried to eat at this restaurant twice. The first time I was told that there was a problem with the electricity and I would have to pay cash. I asked the staff where an ATM was located but was ignored by the staff. I left. The second time I went to this restaurant I went there at 11am when the restaurant was supposed to be open but the doors were locked. I parked in the rear parking lot and passed the kitchen returning to my car. There was staff in the kitchen but again I was ignored. This type of customer service was unacceptable. Uyghur food, as a result of an ancient civilization that has absorbed and integrated a great number of styles and traditions over several millennia, is a perfect mélange of the foods you will find on your Silk Road journey from Istanbul to Sichuan: well spiced, uniquely seasoned and skewered, with meat, rice, and noodles as staple complements. If you like Indian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Persian, Turkish, or Russian/Georgian flavors, then you will undoubtedly find this place a real winner on all counts. Dolan's perfectly captures the artisanal, handmade noodle tradition, combining it with hearty, halal options, from chicken to lamb. There are also plenty of salad and soup choices for those wanting to preserve a KETO-friendly, low-carb, and/or vegetarian/vegan diet. I could come here almost every day and not get bored with the options. My favorite dishes are the boiled lamb leg (a super healthy protein-rich option!), garlic cucumber, and fried eggs & tomato. Other screens hypnotize the viewer to the ebullient Uyghur music and dance gatherings, offering a glimpse at how weddings and holidays have been celebrated for centuries in the region. The walls are adorned with Uyghur musical instruments, paintings, tapestries, and other artifacts redolent of the geometrically-inspired Islamic art & architecture that spans Andalusía to Delhi. Very cozy and inviting. The staff have always treated me with impeccable friendliness and swift service. The food has thus far been consistent, fresh, and tasty. I have been to Dolan's at least 25 times, and will keep going back. Don't forget to try the Uyghur honey cake, which most resembles "Medovik," the Russian honey cake. Order it with their herbal tea. Finally made it back to Dolan's after first trying a few years ago when they first opened. This time I came with a larger group so we could try more dishes, and I'm happy to say that all the noodle dishes we ordered had WARM noodles (unlike my first visit), lol. Now the tea is no longer complimentary, but the restaurant space is still clean and cultural designs are beautiful. Service was also much quicker than before. This time we tried: -Laghman again! The hand pulled noodles and the tomato-ey sauce were delicious. There were pieces of beef, tomato, wood ear mushrooms, onion celery and bell peppers. Everyone in my group enjoyed this noodle dish! -Fried Naan with Beef, this dish was another favorite of the night. The fried naan are addicting and the seasoning was good, they even added a few pieces of french fries, bell pepper, and onions along with a small portion of beef slices. -Big Plate Chicken flavor was good with thicker hand pulled noodles that sit at the bottom to absorb all the flavors from the chicken and veggies. I would say if you have a group of 3 the small should be enough, but 4 or more should order the large size. -Samsa was warm, flakey and delicious. I really liked this appetizer and the pickled purple cabbage was a good palate cleanser. -Lamb Kebabs were good! Tender and well seasoned, just a bit pricey... -One of my friends ordered the Uyghur Milk Tea and we all had a taste, it is warm, salty and a strong milk flavor...I couldn't taste any tea so I personally won't be ordering this drink. This place is fantastic! I'm so glad mom talked me in to stopping to eat in even though we had fresh soup waiting for us at home. We ordered the goshnaan and veggie laghman to share. Both were superb! The goshnaan had such a satisfying onion and spice taste. I couldn't stop eating it. The the laghman had hand-pulled noodles with a delicious salty garlic sauce. So wonderful! The yogurt is unlike any other yogurt dessert, it has a lightness to it with the right texture and viscosity that goes super well with the honey on top. I came here because I've never had Uyghur cuisine before. Our friend came to town and we needed to find a nice Halal place to dine in. Even though everything looks great on the surface, actually dining in lead to another experience. The decor and decorations around the place were nice. However, the air conditioning was blazing and worst yet, it was actually a sub 70 day in Socal. We actually had to get our coats from the car. The waitress was really nice but was also really rushed. She seemed to be doing 8 tables or orders herself. She was like a speedster from a comic book. The problem is, I could only get maybe half of a sentence off and she was away again. The food was decent but I think it suffered from portion control. We ordered the beef with fried nan and cumin. Most of the dish was naan instead of beef. They did not hold back on the cumin portions, though. I think it was spicy just from the cumin flavor alone. The lamb kebobs were the best dish. The only problem is that we ordered 4 skewers but only got 3. We were about to finish the whole meal and they finally brought out the 4th one but we were already packing up everything. The impression I had at the end is that they're really about the money. The service was just a secondary for them. I really wanted to like this place but I'm going to have to recommend you try elsewhere if you want Uyghur cuisine. read more

When asked why it would take another 20 minutes, minimum, for food to arrive, after we'd already been waiting for at least 40 minutes, the answer the staff gave was, "well, the chef likes to batch certain dishes together, and yours are less common." Apparently the table next door's dishes weren't very common either, since they were waiting before we got there and left at the same time. There was no apology given except for a bowl of yogurt. I've been to Dolans twice so far and my overall impression has been okay. It's nice to have a bit more variety around Alhambra, so this restaurant is a welcomed addition to the city with Uyghur cuisine. If you didn't know, Uyghurs are an ethnic group that resides in the most western region of China, Xinjiang. They're also Muslims, Chinese Muslims to be exact, an interesting fact! The restaurant is spacious and traditionally decorated, proudly displaying Uyghur culture. The food is on the pricier side compared to other restaurants in the area. Given the price, the portion sizes were just okay. Kebab Noodles: my favorite dish at this place, definitely a must-try. It's on the spicy side, but that's what makes it great. Got this on both visits. Manti: their version of the dumpling. It was a bit bland, but tasted much better when dipped in the Kebab noodles sauce. Samsa: an okay appetizer, but I wouldn't get again, it felt like eating mostly bread. Laghman Noodles: good flavor, but it was very difficult to separate the noodles onto our individual plates. It took a couple minutes for us to split the portion between my party, it was a struggle. Fried Naan: this was crunchy with addicting flavors, but it was very greasy! You can just feel the unhealthiness with each bite, probably wouldn't order this again. Overall, it was an okay experience, leaning more towards mediocre on my second visit. The kebab noodles were not as tasty as the first visit, the flavors were somewhat lacking. Still, Dolans is a good restaurant to try, especially if you're interested in Uyghur cuisine; it's a good introductory. I'll be back if someone wants to try Uyghur food. read more

Big Plate Chicken included chicken thighs over thin wide noodles in a flavorful sauce along with some stewed potatoes, onions and peppers.
