Pea sprouts: highly recommend this if it is in season. The pea sprouts is simply stirred fried with garlic, nicely seasoned. A great vegetable option. Shrimp with scrambled eggs: even though the portion went down, the flavor is still good. Really can't go wrong with this. The egg is soft and fluffy. The shrimps are tender. Not overly salty. Thai style seafood fried rice: it is slightly spicy, the rice is well cooked and seasoned. Not too many seafood, but the portion is still very good. Really recommend this, not a typical fried rice to find in Chinese restaurants. Kung pao chicken: the chickens are not diced in to cubes, but into large strips (which is unlike the traditional dish). The meat is tender and has a good amount. It is slightly spicy, but mostly just savory. The service is great, everyone is very friendly and helpful. Mama Lu's in Alhambra, an interesting experience. Before ordering online, you need to read my review. The interior of Mama Lu's looks very modern, not the old school white walls in a Chinese café. It was clean, and there was a waiting sit down area in the front. This location does serve alcohol, which includes not limited to wine, tequila and other spirits. I came at an off time at 4pm. The worker at the front spoke English pretty well, so don't be intimidated coming in not being able to speak or understand Chinese. I don't, . Now on to the food by the number on the menu: 1. Juicy Pork Dumplings - the dumplings were at par with any other XLB. It did not stand out that would compel me to come back. 16. Spicy Wonton - I wanted to love this, but I didn't. Essentially it is a conventional Wonton you would find in a Wonton noodle soup. The sauce, just chili marinated oil aka chili oil. No tang, no zing, and no sweetness. I wish they did change the dressing so it did have something that stood out. The chili oil was very bland that I had to use my homemade chili oil. 22. Roasted beef noodle soup - This was another dish I wanted to love, but couldn't. This is not your normal beef noodle soup. It is Mama Lu's own twist and I understand that. It has a subtle taste of schezwan peppercorn, which iykyk leaves a numbing sensation. Although super subtle, it just removed this soup from my expectation of being a beef noodle soup. It should be named Mama Lu's noodle beef soup. The noodles are very thin as well. 76. Pork chop spicy salt - If you never had anything spicy salt i.e. squid, shrimp, chicken or pork, you need to order this. Good portions and good flavor. This is a banger. Trust me. You made it to my concern of ordering online. Alhambra has a very elderly asian demographic. The pricing of the food is at par when you look at the menu and order in person. Pricing should be affordable as the elder folks should be able to purchase nostalgic food. Look at my receipt and compare it to ordering online. The prices are completely different. Some items range from an increase of 0.25 to more than 2 bucks when ordering online. Do yourself a favor, order in person or call it in. I didn't even know Mama Lu's is now in Alhambra! Well, technically, it's quite close to the San Gabriel border. Turned out to be a very nice experience! The restaurant is actually very clean inside, & had a feel of a more upscale restaurant than I expected. Staff here are really very good, very attentive & careful. A big plus, they were very confident that their kitchen did not cross contaminate, so that was a huge relief for me. Forewarned though, if you have peanut allergies, they serve peanuts, & you may need to request for no peanut oil. Food came out piping hot, and everything looked really fresh. We ordered the pea sprouts with garlic. That was a surprisingly large portion! It was enough for us, plus leftovers! You couldn't get that at that other "famous" dumpling place in the mall, lol. Came here with fam for dinner and on a weekday got seated fairly quickly. Ordered with the server who spoke Mandarin but also understood Canto and English. It's a casual dine-in option that you can absolutely bring family and kids to. The food came out pretty quick. Ordered chow fun, French style beef tenderloin, Xiao long bao and some dumplings, steamed fish, and veggies. Food was pretty good. Some dishes seemed to not be as flavorful while some were a bit disappointing like the Xiao long bao. However, this is all decently priced for dine in. Will certainly come back! My friends and I decided to try the Mama Lu's in Alhambra as it recently opened. We arrived around 7pm and were seated immediately. After we ordered our food everything started coming out. We ordered xiao long bao, honey garlic pork chops, beef roll, green beans with beef, beef chow mein and pan fried pork buns. We liked all the dishes we ordered but thought the chow mein and pork buns were lacking flavor. They have condiments on the tables so you can add some of that to resolve the problem. I like how the xlb had thin wrapping and was filled with soup. The honey garlic pork chops were crispy and the sauce is addicting. The beef rolls were juicy and dripping in its own sauces. They have their own lot next to the restaurant and there is always street parking around the corner. We ordered 6 items since we were hungry but left with 3 things. This is a new location. Plenty of free parking they have their own lot. Inside feels like it's been updated. There's a private room with two round tables plus a smaller table. We got a booth. Free pot of hot tea and sweet and salty peanuts also free arrived. We ordered and portions were good size! I don't like salty so noodles were perfect. String beans were perfectly crisp and pork chops were very crispy! Ordered one bowl rice. We had a lot of leftovers to take home for two more meals! I don't know what y'all keep raving about Mama Lu's no matter what location. This replaced Jiang Nan which was an absolute gem. The shen jen bao was soggy and oily. Please avoid. The XLB, is mid as it is everywhere other location. Go to thumbling, DTF, 7 grams.... Stop giving people the idea that a franchised dumpling house breeding mediocrity deserves more locations. The Shanghai rice cake is lighter in color at this location. The steamed chicken with sauce is really good. The lamb with onions had ALOT of onions with alittle lamb. The fried chicken wings were the BEST! They were juicy, crispy, and tasty. The portions at this location seem smaller than the other locations. This location is really loud for some reason. Loving the new location in Alhambra. Always a fan of Mama Lu's Dumplings House. They're known for their Juicy pork dumpling and other family style entrees. The juicy dumplings and pan fried dumplings are a must to order. Flavor pork fillings. It's absolutely the best. I tried their new item on the menu. golden shrimps. It's similar to walnut shrimps but with wonton chips. Sweet and Sour chicken is one of my favorite and go to. I love the sweet and sour sauce crispy chicken. This location is a lot bigger than the Monterey park Location. It can definitely accommodate large parties. And service is great and quick. I think this is a fairly new location, but this location on Main St, in Alhambra, is great! There's a small parking lot next to their restaurant as well as a small lot directly behind the place, with a rear door access that makes it convenient. Once we went in, we were seated almost immediately. The place has high ceilings and large glass windows on the Main St. side so you get a lot of natural light. The workers are very professional and prompt with their service. Everyone was working really hard to ensure all their guests were being taken care of. After ordering our dishes, the plates arrived and everything was fresh and hot off the pan. We ordered their signature steamed soup dumplings, pan fried dumplings, beef wrap, just to name a few. Their tea was also light and flavorful. The tea had a hint of jasmine, which I'm not a fan of, but it was light enough to enjoy. I hate being a critic of Mama Lu's but this location has some work to do. The main reason I would come here is for their Juice Pork Dumplings so I always judge first by how well they do on it. - It was so disappointing that this dish took the longest to arrive and it wasn't good. We were basically about to finish our meal and cancel our order before it came out. - And as you see from my picture, they came sad and deflated. I tried to be optimistic that they were at least going to be juice but there was no soup in any of them. Maybe two had some extra liquid but that was it. Tried some other dishes like their beef udon, green beans, pan fried dumplings but maybe my favorite was the green beans. We enjoy going to Mama Lu. This is the first time we've gone to the new Alhambra store, and this is now our favorite. Only negative is they don't have the frozen dumplings, wontons, and steam dumplings we keep it home and enjoy so much. We were a group of 11, and ordered juicy pork dumplings, pea sprout, sweet and sour chicken, French style beef tenderloin, house special crystal chicken, green onion pancake, fish with seaweed, hot and sour soup, Szechuan style shrimp, black bean with clams, pork chop with spicy salt, and ribeye with chili. All but two of the dishes were really delicious. The green onion cakes were okay but not great, and we were very disappointed in the clam dish. The sauce was fine, but the clams were tiny and you really didn't get to enjoy anything. We had a great server, and I neglected to get his name. The bussers and assistants were terrific in keeping us in tea, clearing up, bringing in dishes one after another. It really was an excellent meal and everybody had a good time. They added an 18% tip which was just fine, and the bill came to just under $300. I added an extra tip in cash for the server because he really took great care of us. I really recommend this place, and apologize for not remembering to photograph all the dishes. read more

There's no cooking like home cooking, or in this case, Mama Lu's. This here is another branch that opened up serving up a storm of food. My friends and I ordered: Fish with seaweed, but don't be mistaken, this is fried fish with seaweed bits mixed into the batter. It's crunchy and delicious, definitely a must order. Egg tofu is my personal guilty pleasure though they skimped out on the mushrooms. No matter, they gave plenty of tofu which is just decadent. Pea sprouts is a healthy vegetable choice and come on, who doesn't love us some well cooked pea sprouts? Gotta get that fiber intake. Shanghai chow mein was really just carbohydrate filler so don't expect this one to wow anyone but if you want something beyond white rice, this is an option. I get that it's a new restaurant and growing pains are expected but very short staffed. They only had 2 servers on a Sunday evening at 5:30. The kitchen help had to come out and help out. We were stuck in a table in the back with 10 people and forgotten. All of the food came out at different times and one dish didn't even come out. The pork xlb is why everyone comes to any of the mama lu's. You get 8 pieces for $9.99 that is dirt cheap compared to the bay. All the other dishes were ok, sweet and sour chicken, green beans, braised tofu, salted fish. The chicken wings were good too but everything was whatever. This is the best of the Mama Lu's restaurants I've been to thus far. The wait staff is quick and responsive and the food especially tasty. I belief their seafood is the best prepared of the various entrees served and are large servings as well. Even the grandsons liked the food. I'm not sure, but I think they retained the previous chef, as the quality tastes very similar and food cooked to perfection. One of several locations in LA, this one sits off a main street in the middle of Alhambra. Lots of parking on the street as well as in the adjacent dedicated lot. Inside is spacious. The menu is equally as expansive and full of traditional, Taiwanese family style items. The pricing is reasonable, especially for what you're getting. The plates are LARGE. You will not be cheated here for sure. They're known mostly for their dumplings, so we had to order the ubequitous soup version. Theirs was OK, but the soup inside was a bit lukewarm unfortunately. So this is my new favorite Mama Lu's location. I love the one on West Garvey the best, then this one and other location in Monterey Park. I didn't like the one in Pasadena. This location is pretty good. Service was great, food was good and I didn't have to wait for my food. The place is decent size and clean. This will be my go to place. There's a small parking lot to get here. There's plenty of seating, especially for larger groups. If you get the circular table then you have the lazy susan which is great for family style. The staff are great amd helpful. They were always on top of having plates of food arriving quick and having the teapot filled. I got to try a few dishes. The fried rice was good. The food is really good, and it looks like they still offer some of the old Jiang Nan Spring (it was formerly received Michelin stars I think) menu in addition to the Mama Lu's menu -- best of both worlds. We ordered the shumai, which were juicy and delicious. The dumplings were tasty and nicely juicy too. The sweet and sour pork was flavorful and absolutely delicious. We also had the tilapia, fried and sautéed, and it was very good. The mapo tofu was just okay for us, but still decent. To balance everything out, we got the stir-fried vegetables, which were fresh and delicious. The restaurant is clean, and the attendants were pretty good and attentive. This is a newer Mama Lu's location. The menu has a great variety. We came here for the new year dinner. There is plenty of parking in the back if you arrive early. The server wanted to be responsive but when the restaurant was full, it was hard to get their attention to refill the tea pot or order our food. The food is generally good, better than the one in Arcadia. We ordered Xiao long boa, beef roll, green beans, fried rice with egg white, Mongolian beef and their signature duck. Most dishes are good, the signature duck was a tad dry and flavor was blend. I'd recommend to skip this. I ordered the vegetarian chow mein and the kung pao chicken. The chow mein was solid--simple, flavorful, and well done. The kung pao chicken was good overall, though I wish there had been less fatty meat and more spice and depth of flavor; it leaned a bit too salty for my taste. Once upon a time, I used to live in Monterey Park and would walk down the street to Mama Lu's for their dumplings, fried rice, beef chow fun, and more. We would frequently pick up dinner from there on lazy days. When friends visited, that's where they would ask to go. We also regularly got them for catering when we hosted gatherings. But we moved and no longer had the ease of walking down the block for their delicious and affordable food. Alas, the Mama Lu empire grew and locations sprouted throughout SoCal! An Alhambra location opened and I had to go. Easy parking lot, right off Main St, and modern, clean decor. It is spacious and there is a private room available as well. Service was warmer here as well. But the food? It was lackluster, average, and not reminiscent of the original Mama Lu's. Take me back to that MP crammed location with its long waits and unfriendly servers anytime, if it means tasting the Mama Lu's flavors that I adore and love. This was an okay experience.
