I called here during the week to schedule a nail cutting service and teeth brushing. They were completely booked out for the week but told me if I came right now, they could see my dog. Got there in 15min and was seen immediately. Everyone was so nice and accommodating. One star deducted because the nail job was rushed to the point where one nail didn't get fully cut and another nail was split in two. This was disappointing. The teeth cleaning service was not what I imagined. It was putting toothpaste onto the dogs teeth and not really brushing. Toothpaste was rubbed onto the dogs tooth and there was no act of scrubbing the teeth. I totally understand that dogs can be terrifying when doing either service (luckily our dog is submissive), but was hoping for more effort put into both. Total ended up being $33. If I ever was getting my dog groom, I would definitely take them here. Thanks for doing y'alls best. read more

I had worked at this groomin salon and let me tell you Karen and Dannie (the groomers really know how to handle dogs and its the only salon I had worked at as an assistant where they stop and give the dogs a break if they show any signs of stress...they use high quality products for cleansing and shampooing dogs..( from a previous comment. Dawn is only used when there are really oily ..dirty dogs ..and it is used on only specific parts of the body..like the butt..mixed in with a high quality shampoo...I have read about her prices being high but they do an amazing .skilled groom..and the rent has gone up along with the price of the products..I haven't worked there in a year but u get every penny worth of a great groom in the hands of caring people ...rest assured your pup is in good hands..Chris who has been there for several years does an amazing job as an assistant to the owner and maintains a very clean sanitary place..I'd give it 10 stars if I could..one more comment on why prices may have gone up is she pays a living wage y to her employees..she pays a higher wage then most places..therefore she has several staff that choose to stay with her read more

The Dog Wash is our favorite! The groomers are expert at grooming the most unusual breeds. Great care is taken with my dogs and the trip to Wilmette is well worth the time. Karen at the Dog Wash has been grooming our sensitive Pug for 7 years. Of course she does an excellent job getting excess hair from my Pug's coat, and of course the bath, and nails are done perfectly. What really sets the Dog Wash apart from other places is the kindness with witch they treat their clients (I.e. the dogs). I often "pop-in" unexpectedly to see how things are going (since I'm often stuck nearby getting the car serviced). The groomers are all talking to the dogs or out walking them briefly. It is the case that they cage the dogs, but the minute they are finished, you get a phone call so you can pick up your pet, if you are free. Karen keeps a sharp eye on her staff. She is an excellent groomer with high standards. She expects all of her groomers to meet these standards as well. read more

We have been coming here for 12+ years. Unfortunately our groomer and the receptionist have left. The new receptionist is nice and obviously has experience working with people but nothing to do with dog grooming. I have four dogs and they don't care about my business. I love the Dog Wash. I used to live a few blocks away and heard about it from a friend. I took my dog there and she tolerated it (most dogs hate going to the groomer). I would bring her in before work and pick her up at night. They even walk the dogs in the afternoon! This place is spotless! It doesn't smell like dogs...or like disinfectant or anything unusual. (maybe shampoo!). When I moved to the city, I went to many, many groomers and couldn't find any that were as clean or where the staff was as friendly. End result, I still take my dog there. Not exactly convenient when they aren't open on weekends, but its worth it. read more

I have been taking my dogs to The Dog Wash for over 20 years and have found them to be the consummate professionals. In the past years we have owned 2 Bouviers and currently a Great Dane puppy. The are very good with dealing with these large breeds and have quite a large clientele with the smaller dogs. We are currently showing our Great Dane and are very pleased with the "tune ups" our puppie recieves prior to show day. I have used their services for my two labs when I lived in the area. 1 1/2 years ago we moved to Colorado, during that time, we sadly lost our wonderful dogs. we now have an amazing 8 month old standard Australian Labradoodle, who we groom every 6 weeks by an amazing groomer. we have returned to the area on a part residency, and I went back to the groomer that I was familiar with. I made an appointment for today, at 10:00am, about a week ago. I asked for a consultation with the groomer because we like to keep our dogs hair long. we are diligent about brushing, and did not want him shaved. I left him at 10:00 - I was told that he would be ready at 2:00 - I phoned at 1:00 to confirm the pickup time (4 hours is his normal stay at his groomer) and was told that they hadn't started the grooming!! they told me to pick him up at 4:00 - said that I would be there soon- my 8month old puppy had been caged since 10:00!! when I went to retrieve my puppy - they had shampooed him, and were in the process of drying him. I was told that it would be $69.00 - I refused to pay - they released my dog - they told me that they were very busy, and there was really no such things as "appointments" - then why do they make them? also, the grooming room is filthy - hair of many dogs are being blown across the floor- no cleanup! DON'T TAKE YOUR DOG THERE IF YOU LOVE IT!!!! read more

We have been going to Karen at the Dog Wash since she opened her business. The care she has given over the years to my special friends is above and beyond what most groomers provide. My friend who is a long time breeder of Bouviers says that my Bouvier Michi gets the perfect grooming for summer and winter. Michi's summer cut is fantastic since she still looks like a Bouvier only with a shorter cut. Michi shows her love to Karen by jumping out of the car and racing to say hello to her very good friend. Don't go here! They take short cuts with dogs and it's a shearing factory! they would rather shave your dogs, charge you way over $100 bucks and the staff are rude! I have occasionally used Yelp to check out businesses, but never signed up to review until the owner of Dog Wash helped me out in the most generous and caring way. My dog had been sprayed by a skunk the night before and I had spent the entire night with various formulas trying to get the stink out. I did well enough but skunk is skunk and funk is funk and I needed professional advice to get the "unk" out. Karen, the owner, mentioned Nature's Miracle and when I came in to buy it, I just got a positive vibe from her. I asked her to apply the finishing touches and I would pay her accordingly. She insisted on helping for free. She put a drop of mineral oil in each eye (as a precaution) and gently took care of the areas around his eyes, ears, snout, etc. with the Nature's Miracle. Then she gave my dog a treat and a bandana and sent us home fresher than ever. The amazing thing is that I am not even a customer. She was simply the closest groomer. I came to her business exhausted and willing to pay anything to finish the job I had been at most of the previous night. Did she take advantage? No, she did exactly the opposite. Victoria does an awesome job grooming my cockapoo. It took us a good number of grooms to be on the same page about how we didn't want him looking super poodle-ish.. but she seems to have it down now. The only real issue I have with them is that the front area is always pretty dirty. I know it's a dog groomer and there is a lot of hair and doggy mess, but it's consistently pretty nasty up there. If they'd let me, I would redecorate and make the place a little more inviting. Overall, I will continue to take my dog to them! read more

Second, they did an awful job with my dog, and when I called to try to speak to a manager about it they first hung up on me while on hold; I called back and they told me they would call me back later and did not. I will never go back to the Dog Wash and after reading some of the reviews below, I can see that I'm not the only one. The staff, the woman at the front desk specifically, couldn't be more rude and insulting if she tried. I have gone to the groomer several times and today she was quite condescending and arrogant, letting her ego get in the way of her customer service skills. It's such a shame that people can't be a little more kinder at the neighborhood grooming establishment. There are too many other reputable places in the vicinity to ever go back to the Dog Wash. We took our 6 month old Shih Tzu puppy to the Dog Wash today for her first grooming, and she looks absolutely spectacular! I brought a photo of a cut that I liked, and Karen copied it exactly. The entire staff was incredibly kind and accommodating....our puppy is very skittish and ran to hide under the couch when we got there. The place is very clean, and they even sell little spa robes for the dogs! When we picked her up, she was waiting for us with a topknot and a pink bow in her hair. I have used the Dog Wash for 18 years and two dogs. I was so surprised to read the Rick R. review that I had to write. I have never had a bad experience in all of the years I have used the Dog Wash. My two dogs have been treated very well, the place is clean, and the staff is always accommodating. My first dog couldn't wait to go, the second one goes reluctantly, but he just doesn't like a bath, no matter the place. They are cocker spaniels, and need a lot of grooming, but I have never experienced "the sheering process" he talks about. I would recommend this grooming business to anyone. I have taken my golden retriever to the dog wash for about 5 years. I live a few blocks from there. I always considered it slightly high priced, but great service place. Each year the price has gone up, and less is being done. This last time I took Lucy in, June, last month....I was furious! They charged me $75.00 just to give her a bath. They didn't do her ears or nails as I requested, and they kept her up on the table for hours! I explained she has severe arthritis so I didn't want her trimmed, just a bath, clip her nails and a razor trim of her ears. $75.00 for a bath? She was in so much pain when she left! Have used this place about 4x for our female lab mix. Yesterday, it's over with Dog Wash. I specifically told the utterly clueless girl ( yes, a girl, not an adult woman) at front desk: do not clip nails, grind them only, as dog will freak out if nails are clipped. When I returned to pick her up, someone shouted from the ( filthy) back room, nails were clipped. So they then decide, ok, we'll do a nail grind, too. I hear dog yelping. As they bring dog out, I was told her foot is bleeding " a little." Never again, and that includes another family member who brings a dog here. read more

I moved here from Washington, DC about a year ago. I was looking for a new groomer in Wilmette. I found the Dog Wash (being really the only groomer in town). The first time I took my dogs there, I really liked the service. I found them welcoming and very professional. Since then, I've gone about 5-6 times. I've been very disappointed in the fact that the price keeps going up! Every time I'm told "I needed to brush alot". Well, isn't this part of grooming and the price? I'm not just paying $50 for a "Dog Wash". I think I would continue to use the Dog Wash as my primary groomer. The WORST groomer I have ever visited. I brought my yorkiepoo puppy in for a grooming and left in tears. My puppy was shedding/growing out his puppy coat, making his fur especially susceptible to matting. The groomers yelled at me about the tangles and said they would shave him. BEWARE!! If I could give zero stars I would!! I am outraged! So I was referred to Karen and they told me she was amazing. Well, this is not the case! I live in Des Plaines and I had just gotten a new dog who needs a good grooming but I was worried about where to take him since he's a bit skittish but I was willing to make the 45-minute journey to Karens because I heard great things. Anyway, I went to Karen and she seemed very nice on the phone. Well, I arrived for my first appointment and she said he would be done in 45 minutes. I waited for over an hour and a half when I got fed up and called they told me he had been done half an hour ago and had forgotten to call me. Then my second appointment I went right in the morning so he would be done first. At least that's what I thought. I dropped him off at 8 am and didn't pick him up till 1:30 and HE WAS STILL WET AND THROWING UP. She had used these treats on him without even asking me and he threw up for 3 days. On top of it, she even charged me $20 more than her usual $65 grooming fee. When I called she said she was sorry that I was upset and would give me a refund. I called back multiple times to get my refund and finally, when she picked up she said that she wasn't going to give me a refund anymore and said that if I wanted to drive down and get it she would give me $10 and then hung up on me. I can assure you she lost my business. read more

My two dogs have been groomed at the Dog Wash for at least 5 years. One of my dogs was "rescued" after being abused and is very fearful. She doesn't "love" going to get groomed, but can tolerate it. At The Dog Wash the dogs are WASHED! My collie is so clean and fluffy. I have been to other shops, but my dog wasn't as clean and soft. I told the receptionist my positive experience and she said each dog is washed twice and with really dirty dogs three times. Our dog is a rescue who's scared of everything, so he doesn't take to strangers and bites regularly. I would groom him myself but he hates the brush as well. This place should be shut down. The last time we took our shih tzu/terrier mix there, we were called to say he was pooping blood, no big deal, we should check with our vet. When we picked him up, he was clearly traumatized, and when we got home, we found cuts and abrasions from the grooming shears all over. The vet said he was so traumatized that his intestines became wrapped in knots. We had to then put him on a special diet for a week until his condition normalized. I contacted the owner and she NEVER RESPONDED. This is what we got for a $70 grooming. Do not take your dog here! read more

We've been going to the Dog Wash for 9 years and they're fantastic. My dog had a few bad experiences at other places and is very allergic to many types of shampoo. He's actually excited to go see "Miss Patty" and has never had any adverse reactions to the products they use. I think that the prices have only gone up once since we started going there, so I don't know what some of the other reviewers are talking about. Also, they ask you each time how short you want your dog cut, and decide whether to use the clippers or hand cut depending on how short the coat is going. I've never had a problem. Do I think their prices are high? Maybe compared to Petsmart, but then the Dog Wash has never left my wiggly dog with cuts and scratches like other places. We love the Dog Wash and will keep going there as long as we have dogs. read more

Karen, owner of the Dog Wash is a wonderful, caring groomer. She does a fantastic job with my Bouviers. So great, that the breeder of my dogs says "Your dogs are the best groomed! They look like Bouviers!" This is from a breeder that has had the top Bouvier and top herding dog in the United States. Beyond this, Karen and my pups have been together for more than 20 years. When my dogs were very ill, she made them as comfortable as possible. Her kindness to them meant so much to me. She has groomed three of my gorgeous Bouviers and my one beautiful Akita. I take care of my dogs and brush them. Owners who complain about their dogs being shaved need to brush their dogs. Matts can only be removed by shaving and starting over, any other method would be extremely painful and cruel to the pet. read more
