This place is really out of the way depending on where you are coming from. You have to ferry across to an island and then drive to the other end of said island. Its not expected. In the times I have dined here, it might reflect the best dining experience I have had in the state of WA. (considering I mostly only dine in King county area) Stayed in a cabin at the Doe Bay resort. This cafe could be considered the resorts restaurant, or anyone is welcome. Since we wanted relaxation and massages and quiet, it was AMAZING to be able to dine every single meal here for 3 days. They have a breakfast / brunch and a dinner menu. Both are innovative farm to table affairs that change daily. Knowing the menu would be 100% different within a few months, I actually plan on tracking back to the end the road this place sits to dine 2-4 times a year as the menu changes. I would stay in the resort just to be able to dinner / breakfast this place in one drive out. The food was so good, if the resort didn't have cabins available I would sleep in a tent to camp that lovely cafe food. Everything is fresh and subtle - sometimes decadent (nods to French toast and flame toasted caramelized oven baked grapefruit) The salads so exciting even non salad people will enjoy. Go tapas style and order more dishes. I recommend at least 1 selection from each menu section as a course for 2 people. Do it! Drive there. read more

The highlight and crown achievement of our Orcas trip. It was my birthday and we rolled in for brunch around 1pm. I started with a bloody mary that was spicy, thick and stocked up with garnishes. Boyfriend had coffee with cream and raw sugar. We took a long time to decide on entrees, the server was patient and knowledgeable. I asked about getting salmon benedict without kale and she offered that it might taste less-than because it was missing a crucial ingredient but ultimately left it up to me. I got the traditional breakfast and the rhubarb rolled oats and my boyfriend got salmon benedict (with kale) and we planned to share. When the food arrived, we were happy with how it looked. The atmosphere of the restaurant was rustic and natural but clean and simple. It was such a perfect meal. The potatoes on both breakfasts were (we think) fried to get a good crisp and then baked or roasted to get a softness to them. They were really well prepared. Salmon benedict was a tad salty (but so is salmon in general), the biscuit was homemade, the hollandaise was a calabrian chile and had a nice warm smoky heat to it. Eggs were perfectly poached and we devoted at least a full minute to appreciating how well they cooked the eggs. On the ferry, one of the magazines advertised some fancy shmancy restauraunt with a "chef and food practioner" which seemed like a trumped up charge. This cafe earns it. This chef deserves a fancy title. My two eggs were over medium and dreamy. Oh and my biscuit came with a tiny pat of butter (which tasted higher quality than regular, maybe it was Kerrygold?) and a strawberry jam. The oatmeal was served with a few mandarin slices in syrup. The clotted cream and rhubarb reduction were excellent. I devoured everything in front of me. And because I had leftover strawberry jam, I poured it into my oatmeal. EXCELLENT. Oh also one last bit, the cafe allows you to tack on the hottub passes ($15/day per person) to your meal. Cole said, "I wish more places offered that." Breakfast and a hottub! Not a single complaint. Natural light, lots of windows for the bay, close to the spa, excellent food, quality ingredients, knowledgeable service and cooking skills. YUM. read more

Exceptional experience! We were able to have both dinner here one night, as well as brunch and both were absolutely amazing. These two meals, especially dinner, was a culinary experience I will never forget. We got multiple items from the menu and decided to share all of them amongst us. The broccoli salad with the sourdough Loaf and nasturtium butter was Unreal. We also starred the Porcini mushroom dish, gnocchi and halibut, all of which were so wonderful! Everything on the plate had a purpose and was so well thought out and complimented each other perfectly. Brunch was just as wonderful. We were staying at Doe Bay so we were able to have both breakfast and dinner. The breakfast was good, we had ricotta pancakes and the breakfast burrito. The pancakes were definitely burnt on one side which was a bummer. They put the burnt side down, like I wouldn't notice but I could definitely taste that black-burnt flavor. They probably should have tossed them and started from scratch, not try to hide it. Especially considering the cost. The sauce on the ricotta pancakes was really, really good. Excellent fresh flavor. I wouldn't say it saved the meal, but close! The burrito had some really good flavors as well but it needed some acidity or sauce since it was sort of pasty on the inside from all the refried beans. Again, the only reason we expected more from breakfast was because of the cost. Dinner was the same experience. Some good flavors but some big faults too. Mussels were overlooked/rubbery but in a really tasty broth. Shrimp were small, soggy and bland but the green tomatoes in that dish were fresh, light and very nicely prepared. A total mixed bag, but for the cost, they should have nailed it. Unlike other reviews, we found the service to be quite fast and the server was pleasant. read more

A culinary treat and an experience that will not be forgotten. All the dishes I tried, from the Grilled Octopus, The Pine Nut Stuffed Squid, Raw Oysters, and even a Spring Green Salad (Sourced from the onsite Garden) were absolutely delicious, perfectly balanced and beautifully plated. In the morning brunch I tried the Japanese Savory Pancake, and that is a not to miss item on the Brunch Menu! The Menu changes weekly. This restaurant is like a skit out of portlandia. The staff is pretentious and goes out of their way to not be helpful. It's the only gig in town so they must be used to getting away with whatever they want. We had to ask for silverware after the food was delivered. They won't split checks. They won't customize orders. They offer unlimited coffee (and for $3 for a cup it better be) but you have to track down the server to try and get a second cup. Frustrating and terrible. My friend ordered her eggs a little more cooked as she doesn't like them runny and the waiter made a point to deliver everyone's food first them tell her that "her eggs were still cooking." We stayed in the "resort" as well and had the same smug asshole service from the front desk. The kimchi fried rice wasn't bad though. The rice was a little overcooked but the flavor was great. I was the one of the few who enjoyed my meal though. The biscuits and gravy were terrible. The pizza was described by two separate parties who ate there two separate nights as "the worst they had ever had" If you order the right meal this place is ok. Hard to beat the view but not a restaurant that would survive anywhere with any sort of competition for dining out dollars. read more

Brunch is a must here. The views alone are worth it. The service can be slow, but you are on Orcas Island, why does it need to be fast? Just enjoy the emerald green bay, the swooping eagles and the ships going by. The biscuits and gravy are the bomb, as are most of their rotating seasonal specials. Today we had the salmon Benedict and the corn cakes with really good greens and sauce. The coffee was hot and the food really satisfying. Pair that with a soak, a walk around down to the beach and this place is heaven. I will be honest I have never done dinner so can't comment on that. But, brunch - yes please! We stayed at Doe Bay Resort for the weekend and loved it. Please see my review under Doe Bay Resort for more information on our experience at the resort/campground. Our last night here we had dinner at the cafe. The cafe is very cute. I loved the earthy yet elegant feel. They have a nice bar and great seats- many of which overlook the cove. We had some wine, the salmon entree, and the special scallop appetizer served on green garlic flan. The wine was great and it was nice to have a bottle for $24. The scallops were excellent and the flan was very interesting. I had never had a savory flan before but it was delicious and it was fun to try something so unique. The salmon dish had complex flavors including a tasty sauce. I can't remember if the fiddle heads were served with the scallops or the salmon but we both enjoyed those as well. I never thought I'd eat a fern! My only complaint about the meal was that the salmon fillet was overcooked and not very flavorful. A shame at $28 for the plate to have the main attraction be just average. The salmon was on the dry side and definitely overcooked. I could have made the salmon better myself. However, the accompanying sauce and veggies were excellent. Service was great and the evening was all I could hope for. Great little cafe with a seasonal, all organic menu. Many of the vegetables are grown in their own Doe Bay Garden and most are locally sourced. The menu is all vegetarian except for seafood dishes. Menu changes based on the season. I would highly recommend Doe Bay Cafe for dinner. Just request medium or medium rare if you order the salmon! Bill came to $70 for 1 appetizer, 1 entree, and 1 bottle of wine. This is a hidden gem within so many hidden gems in the San Juan Islands. But gosh, his one takes the cake. It's out on the northern end past Moran State Park. The cafe is inside the Doe Bay Resort - a very cool place in and of itself - and is open much later than other restaurants, especially in the slow winter season. In fact, it's one of the few open on a Sunday. This restaurant is very cool, rustic, laid back. They have a full bar! Everything is local and pescatarian. And did I mention local? They get as close as they can to the source, buying mushrooms from local scavengers, and getting fresh seafood right from the bay. The menu is limited but fabulous, including pastas and salads and soups, fish and more. We had the six course tasting menu for $65, plus the wine pairing (can't remember the cost) and WOW. Ye portions are generous for tasting. The first was a bread "snack" that had 8 different toppings, including creme fresh and crispy salmon skin, olives and and some other kind of fish... Then we had delectable mushrooms in white wine broth. It was a whirlwind of taste-tacularness. Obviously my mouth is still reeling. The tasting menu is crafted for each guest based on dietary needs and boy do they deliver. And the wine! Fabulous wine ranging from bubbles to white Bordeaux and Malbec. It wasn't cheap but Goddamn, it was worth it. It'd definitely recommend reservations because I'm sure that in the summer they're slammed. read more

UNFORGETTABLE! Last week we were married on the beach of the bay the cafe overlooks. Having gotten to Doe Bay early to get settled in our cabin we stopped in the cafe for a bite to eat around noon. First, the brunch was amazing. I have never tasted scrambled eggs ... I don't even have the words for how they tasted. Just wow! The biscuits and gravy ... oh god. It was almost sexual. On our way out we decided to make reservations for dinner after our ceremony and cancel our prior reservations at another restaurant. The restaurant was book due to a film festival on Orcas. One of the producers was presenting his work later that evening. After making our reservation the hostess came running out of the Cafe to let us know we were actually double booked and if would mind changing our reservation from 7:00 PM to 7:30 PM. We were fine with that and thought nothing of it as we went on with our afternoon and wedding ceremony. When we arrived at the Cafe that evening we discovered the change in reservation had somehow not been noted. My wife let them know it was our wedding night and we were looking forward to dining with them. After some discussion of where to seat us we were offered a complimentary drink or dessert and a spot at the bar while we waited for a table. We decided to take them up on the drink and wait at the bar. We realized after sitting down at the bar our spot was where the film producer was supposed to be sitting to present his film They were holding up the entire film presentation so we could have a place to sit and wait for a table! While at the bar we had the pleasure of a delightful conversation with the bartender. NO he was much more than a bartender. He was an alchemist. His drinks were magic. After serving our first drink he disappeared for a few minutes. When he came back he let us know that the Cafe wanted to celebrate our wedding with us and apologized for the confusion with the reservation. Our meal and drinks were on them! We were a little stunned to say the least. Then he gave us their regular menu. Which is important because their regular menu was not available that evening. They had a limited menu later in the evening due to the film festival. He had apparently disappeared to confer with the chef about whether they could offer us the full menu. While we were grateful for their generosity and helping make our special day even more so we were not prepared for what followed. We were presented with an appetizer to as the bartender said, stimulate our appetites. Sliced apples and caramelized something, I don't know. Heavenly! There was another course brought to us as our dinners were being prepared. My wife knows what we ate. I have no idea. Just amazing food. Where as the brunch was almost sexual, this dinner was full on gastronomic love making. I had the black cod as my main dish. I don't know what the name of my wife's main entree was. God it was good. And dessert. We both had the root beer float. To which they add at least a shot of bourbon. When we got up to leave our server and the bartender got hugs from both of us. Doe Bay Cafe. As fresh as it gets, pulled from the garden out back. Gorgeous views and amazing location. They list where the foods come from on a chalkboard, and all are pretty local. They also have some neat and local cocktail options. The restaurant is crowded with campers and other tourists, so I would recommend making reservations in advance. The menu is creative. When I visited, there were several good vegetarian options and one vegan option. The water is local and has a slightly sulfuric odor that I found off-putting. Next time I would order a juice or beer. There was a complimentary flat bread cracker / roasted red pepper dip appetizer that was delicious. The servers were really stoked to work there (there was much gushing about the coolness of seed-to-table) but they are not so stoked to serve you. When I asked if there was a way to leave the goat cheese off an item, the server replied "Um, NO, actually, these things are made a certain way and you can't change anything." Uh huh. So I understand that the chefs have a vision for each dish but the appropriate response would have been "the menu items are set but is there a food allergy or dietary need I can ask the chef to help you accommodate?" They also discouraged me from ordering an espresso after the meal....? I love espresso. Theirs was solid. This was all one server, so I'm hoping he is not the norm. It did sully my experience though and next time I would make sure I got someone else. read more

I came to the Doe Bay Cafe because my girlfriend had been once before, and was ellated to go back this summer. To me, it seemed like a long drive for a meal.....but her heart was set, so who was I to argue. BEST IDEA EVER The cafe is amazing, they have a garden where you can see them growing actual ingredients that will be used in your dinner. Impressive! I wish we could have taken a couple more days off, so we could have stayed at the resort. The deer that linger around the grounds, the tranquil water, and the hot tub (clothing optional!!) all looked inviting....all was impressive. Most impressive, however, was the service provided by our waiter Tim. Tim picked up on the fact that my lady and I, had different ideas of what constitutes a good meal, and offered some suggestions. Sick of making decisions, and needing to relax, we both let him pick whatever he thought we should get. What we got was a culinary journey that we will not soon forget. I wont describe the food, because it changes with the seasons, and what the garden provides. I will say that I am more of a meat and potatoes guy, and she is more of a delicate flower who hates the word foodie (probably because it is so accurate). Tim skillfully catered to both our palates, without making me feel unskilled in my tastes (what do you mean you eat the flower..??) While helping my chick pair a wine with said flower . Im mostly kidding, I think... That evening, as the sun went down, we had our vacation. We both had different dining experiences, but with one thing in common, our guide Tim. He didn't just pick what we would eat....but gave us drink pairings for every course that were spot on. After, he even made suggestions about what we may want to do the rest of our time away from the city, and made us eager to return to Doe Bay. Doe Bay is my favorite place on the island, and the cafe is one of my favorite places to eat. We ate dinner on Thursday night and liked it so much that we came again for breakfast on Friday. We wish we'd planned more meals here, since it's so consistently good. First of all, the service is incredibly friendly and very attentive. My coffee cup was never empty and they even offered me a cup to take away. And the view is incredible. It's in a truly gorgeous spot, easily one of the most beautiful places in the state. The food is all made with fresh, local organic ingredients. This stuff is *legit* - you can taste the freshness. Although you'd expect this to be more expensive, Doe Bay Cafe is actually less expensive than many restaurants on the island. We think this is probably because the high cost of transportation to the island evens out the pricing on locally produced foodstuffs. Because ingredients are locally sourced, you may find that there are only vegetarian options available for dinner. And that's just fine. I learned just how marvelous a meatless pizza can be. The breakfast menu is bigger, more varied, and no less delicious--lots of egg dishes, because these are available right next door! Totally worth the drive from other parts of the island. If you're staying at Doe Bay, don't feel bad about having all of your meals there. Good food, friendly service, reasonable prices. Can't beat this place on Orcas Island. read more

I went to the Doe Bay Cafe for breakfast during my vacation on Orcas Island. I was so excited to eat there because of the rave Yelp reviews, but I'm sad to report that our experience was not what I'd hoped for. The location is absolutely breathtaking and we were seated right away, so the meal was off to a good start, but things kind of went downhill from there. Everything on the menu sounds delicious, so I had trouble deciding what to get, but I chose the Caramelized French Toast ($12) and a side of two eggs ($2.50). The menu claims that you can get the eggs "any way you like". So I asked for poached. The waitress informed me that the kitchen couldn't make poached eggs. So I tried for soft-boiled, but the waitress told me that the kitchen couldn't do that either. So then I ended up just settling on scrambled. I'm assuming the kitchen is just too small or something (I'm hoping all chefs know how to poach and soft boil an egg), so I guess it can be forgiven if they can't do poached and soft-boiled, but I'm mystified as to why they wrote "any way you like", because that clearly isn't the case. Anyways, after the unfortunate egg situation, I was still very excited for my food. It took a pretty long time to come out, which was too bad because everyone in my party was quite hungry. I think they were just very understaffed because the waitress was very kind and tried to check in, but she seemed to be covering all the tables, with the help of someone from the kitchen. When our food finally did come I was very pleased with my french toast--the amount they give you is very generous and it was quite tasty. I also had a bite of the Olive Oil Poached Duck Egg ($14), which was very yummy and a bit spicy (in a good way, at least for me). However, my sister ordered a house-made buttermilk biscuit ($2.50) to go along with her meal and it didn't come out with the food. And we asked and asked and asked again and each time the waitress said it was coming. Finally, we had all finished our meals and it still hadn't come. After waiting a little while longer, it did eventually come out. My sister said it was a very good biscuit, but not good enough to want to wait the entire meal and then some for it to come. All in all, our experience at Doe Bay Cafe was kind of a let down. No doubt the food there is quite good, but I don't think I'd go again, due to the lack of egg variety and the discouraging speed of those working in the kitchen. The only gripe I had was how long we waited to have our order taken and receive our food which usually wouldn't be a big deal, but if you have a baby you know that can really backfire (which we do).
