A sharp knife is a safer knife and should go where you point it without a struggle. We use a variety of knives daily, so I have hesitated to be without our favorites while they are sent off for sharpening. Dave was very quick and the knives came home razor sharp. I can't recall them ever being this good. Japanese, German and even a KitchenAid. Dave was wonderful to work with and let me know as soon as the knives were done. I seriously needed to have all my things sharpened.  I hadn't had them done for years and after trying to prune my garden with a struggle, I made the decision to gather them all together and take them in. After seeing so many 5 star reviews I decided to take them to Dave.  I called and made the arrangements to drop them off.  We texted back and forth to arrange a time to drop them off.  Come to find out we had almost 25 things to sharpen!  I brought Dave everything from a rusty old axe to a priceless heirloom knife my uncle forged many years ago.  All tolled, I entrusted him with about $800 worth of knives, garden tools and scissors.  I even took him my favorite knife I carry with me every day (I am so very picky about how it's treated).  All my worries went away once I met him.   Dave has a great patio at the front of his home where you meet with him to drop off and pick up your knives.  He kept me informed of the progress and everything was completed just as promised. I thought his prices were very fair.   If you've ever taken your cutlery to a farmers market for sharpening, please think twice. Don't trust a Joe Blow who grinds edges off with a grinder bought at Lowes.  It is worth every minute oftime to take them to the right place.   I'm glad I did.  Here is a finished photo of my favorite knife and a knife made by my uncle 50 years ago. read more

DK (David Kohn) Sharp is a great reliable place to get your blades and edges honed sharp and conditioned to perfection. His storefront is a homefront, and he's very professional. In terms of customer / client services, he rolls out the red carpet with the white glove treatment. If you call his number and he doesn't answer the phone, I recommend you leave a message with your phone number, as he's prompt to return calls and is a good if not great communicator. He's very fair, honest, forthright, trustworthy, and reliable... He surely was probably a Boy Scout in his youth! His rates are very fair. He doesn't charge as his peers "by the inch" as his approach is customer centtric in explaining how it basically takes roughly the same amount of time to sharpen a 6" knife as it would an 8" or 10" knife. He charged me $6 per knife and I brought in six (6). He was able to turn it around within 30 minutes of receiving them. So, no drop off to pick up later with delays, or at least the time I came. If it's urgent, I'm sure you can call in advance to see what his schedule is like. David told me he also has a frequent / repeat customer deal, where he offers discounts or throws in a few extra free sharpenings when you patronize him again. Parking is fairly easy at DK Sharp, it's in the residential (non retail commercial area) part of Manhattan Beach Blvd. DK Sharp also sharpens serrated blades, specialty blades, non-kitchen knives, swords, scissors, gardening tools... and basically anything with a cutting edge. He treats each blade as its own entity, customizing the treatment, to sharpen the edge to perfection. Dave also gave me tips on how to maintain and treat my knives (such as, "do not put them into the dishwasher" due to the heat/temperature). I'd recommend if you're looking to sharpen a knife or two, or a full set, give David a call at DK Sharp. There's not too many experts in what DK Sharp does, and very little peer competitors who can match up David in his overall services, including his pricing. read more

I had never gotten my knives sharpened, and noticed I had to press harder and harder to cut - bad news. Dave was super easy to schedule with - I called him on a Saturday night (after the business closed) and it went to voicemail, but the voicemail said that you could also text, which is my preference. I texted him and he responded shortly afterwards, at which point we worked out a time for the next day. He finished with my knives (and pizza cutter) less than 90 minutes after I dropped them off, which was awesome. Happy with the price and how easy everything was - he accepts Venmo, which made things even easier. Will definitely be back when I need help again. Appreciated that he even pointed out (ha) that one of my serrated knives was still the (relatively) dullest of the lot - he warned me about this before I got it sharpened as well, and it's perfectly fine for what it was made and used for. My mom has not had a sharp knife in the house in over 6 years. There must have been a reason for waiting this long because finding someone who loves their craft, the way David does, makes the wait worth it. Not only were her kitchen knives brought back to life, and some repaired, but her gardening tools, the hedgers in particular, were oiled and given a desperately needed thorough tune up. He is so fast!! I dropped the 20 or so lifeless items off in the morning and they were back within hours- complete with detailed warnings. (The lot of them were so sharp that the rest of the tools at the house, the ones in good to great shape, looked like antiques and recently excavated relics.) I couldn't believe how happy my mom was. She hasn't been excited about anything to this degree in a long time! Her gardening tools were quickly looked over, because she's a repeat customer anywhere that has a craft well done, and immediately she told me she was going to find more tools that needed to be sharpened. Dave is awesome! He not only sharpened our knives, but he fix one with a huge dent in. 15 years ago, my son, then 8, wanted to do an experiment. Is my knife as strong as my granite countertop? Hmm, the results were... They BOTH lost. Anyway the dent was quite significant. Dave fixed this and you can't tell if there was a huge injury to it. David is the NICEST DUDE. He just seems like such a genuinely kind human being. Upon arrival, he immediately asked if he could get me anything -- water, soda, etc. I brought over two Henckels chef's knives and two pairs of scissors and was asked to wait for 10 minutes while he worked on them. I sat outside on his lovely little porch, sipping on cold water, playing with his pup. He'd finished and came out to show me the knives and, get this, even brought out a little homegrown tomato so I could test the sharpness. SO CUTE. (they cut in like butter, btw) I paid $30 total: $7 per knife and $8 per pair of scissors. The place was a bit confusing to find at first; it's a residential location facing the street and parking is just on the curb. All-in-all, it was just such a pleasant experience. I have a newfound appreciation for my knives and plan to care for them properly (the way I treated them before would enrage so many if I said it here). I now can't wait to tell everyone I know where they can get their gross, dull-ass knives brought back to life! read more

Short version: if you have inexpensive knives or knives that have not been sharpened in 10 years, have been thrown around in a drawer with all kinds of other tools and are in dismal shape, you may be super happy with his work just because your knives have so much room for improvement (and even i could do an "awesome job" with those. I have). But if you tend to like nice knives and take care of them... the type of knives that even when it is not as good as it used to be, it is still better than most people's knives, you will be 100000% disappointed. If you want more detail, read on. i took him 3 knives. He charged me $24 for 2 chef knives and one small paring knife (a higher rate than the $5-6 in one of the photos). He asked me to pay him some way other than with a credit card which seems contrary to the photo on his yelp page "from the business owner" indicating he accepts credit cards for payment but i didnt make an issue of it. Results: all three knives were essentially the same. I tested them on raw chicken breast meat (no bones). That should be an incredibly easy task for a freshly sharpened knife but there was the same amount of drag/friction they had before taking them to Dave and the cuts were not as clean and smooth as they should have been which was absolutely surprising considering his reviews. I texted him to respectfully inform him of that and his responses were unreasonable, uncaring and even mocking. He only checked himself after i pointed out how unprofessional he was being to me while i was being very respectful to him. At that point he tried to pull the "us small businesses" card. I was indeed trying to help a small business, but his response to me sharing a concern was the worst part of the entire experience. A few additional things: -parking may be tough to find as he is on a busy street and works out of his home (no parking lot). -He said it was by chance i caught him home and that he works by appointment only, which is not listed anywhere on his website or yelp page. -at one point before "sharpening" he asked me if i was a chef (im not) and based on the results, i can't help but wonder if he was trying to figure out how much i would know/notice on the knives. I did a little research and turns out Wusthof (brand of my knives) charges $3 per knife to sharpen them. You do have to pay for the shipping and have to wait but im sure they will do a better job. I dont know if they sharpen other brands but i would assume other brands may do the same service. And like another rater commented. He smelled like he partied quite hard the night before. A personal choice but definitely unpleasant on the receiving end. read more

I took a handful of Shuns to Dave to be sharpened that also had broken tips. I've been told in the past once the tip is broken then knife is done but Dave assured me he could fix them. I dropped them off in the evening and they were ready the next afternoon. Dave did an AWESOME job, the knives are like new, and the service was affordable.
