I have several high-quality kitchen knives that I needed to have sharpened. On a Sunday I went to the Hollywood farmers market and brought my knives here. My knives were professionally sharpened and taken care of in record time. Requested a quote via Yelp and got reply within 24 hours! Easiest option was for me to go to the Mar Vista farmers market and when I got there, I was quoted about $8 a knife for my 5 knives (all different sizes) and 30 minutes. After walking around and shopping 30 minutes flew by and I picked up my knives. They were all well sharpened and I will definitely get them resharpened with Gary's when they need it again. read more

Not only did he sharpen my knives, scissors and garden tools like I was Edward Scissorhands, he was kind, he was accommodating, he was generous, and he was delightful. I messaged him and he responded. Imagine that!! That should be given, but it's not. Folks don't have etiquette on returning calls or emails these days. But there I go again sounding like an old white man with no country. So, I reached out to him to attend our neighborhood garage sale. The operator was not named Gary, I believe it was Rick. My 8 inch chef's knife was sharpened to perfection for $6, while I shopped for some yummy veggies. Finally got the time to stop by Gary's Knife Sharpening at the Mar Vista farmers market. Not that I have the greatest knife set in the world, but it's a quality set. Price was appropriate, as well as time frame for service. The problem is when I got home, not a single knife could cut through a lime. They were all extremely rough, with wildly uneven edges. In addition, he ground down little bits of the base of each knife. Ridiculous. MUCH worse than before and completely unusable. Sent an email earlier in the day, so far no response. read more

Not sure if it's the way he sharpened.., my great Italian hair scissors wasn't working too great after he sharpened them... I think I should have gone to a hairdressing place that knows how to sharpen this... Does anyone know wheeler I can get these fixed??? Also not sure if my other knives were not as sharpe, not as I expected them to be... They are great knives too!! Not some cheap China made... I am not too familiar on how 1 sided blade knives should feel..? Is it due to me being a left handed and using a single sided blade that would probably work better on a right handed??? I needed a meat slicer sharpened, and I read that Gary had a mobile service. He told me his minimum service was $40. I agreed, and he said he wanted me to know that for that amount, he would also sharpen my chef's knives. I didn't ask for this, but he was nice enough to offer. He showed up on time, sharpened the slicer, sharpened my chef knives, and was smiling and pleasant. I got the feeling that he appreciated my business, which is VERY important to me. Gary, back when Russ ran your stand at the Hollywood farmer's market, I brought my best German steel chef's knives in for sharpening twice a year. After Russ worked his magic, my knives cut through thick-skinned whole tomatoes with ease and sliced baby artichokes and radishes so thin each disk was almost translucent. I've brought you those same knives three times in the last six months, and thought it was my imagination that they seemed no sharper afterward. But after this last time, my 11" German steel extra-wide Wusthof requires most of my upper-body strength to make it through a lemon rind. Will not be back unless Russ or someone with his skills returns. read more
