Here is perhaps a strange review:…read more I got my knives sharpened a few weeks ago by Pete and they have been a joy to chop and slice with - truly didn't realize how dull they were. This all became even more clear to me last night, while making dinner. I did something very inadvisable and, in doing so, cut my finger with my very big and sharp knife. Middle finger, at the knuckle. When I finally recovered from the shock enough to assess the damage, I was fascinated and thrilled to see that while the cut was a little deep, it was perhaps the cleanest cut I've ever had in my life. Almost disconcertingly so to be honest. and the cut itself doesn't hurt or sting at all! There wasn't even any blood on the blade, but I washed it off and continued using it to make dinner. All night, I kept saying, "I am so glad I got my knives sharpened by Pete at the Atwater Farmers Market. Can you imagine if the knife had been dull???"

He had us browse the store and also showed some very unique items that are not usually in demand. They're all very nice knives that we use with some frequency, and over time they lost some of their sharpness, as knives are wont to do. My husband found Japanese Knife Imports online, and I took in our dull knives in the course of an errandy Friday afternoon. The shop is on Wilshire in Beverly Hills, with very subtle signage--you'd never know the place was there just by driving by. I was able to find street parking right in front. That 2:00 hour before Wilshire meters become a tow-away zone is a great time to visit. The space was attractive, neat and inviting with a sort of secret library coziness. The front area was filled with pretty knives and loaded bookshelves, and there was some cool pottery on display, made by one of the owners' parents. I didn't spend much time browsing, but I think everything was for sale. The back of the shop seemed like an office/work area, and it gave off a hum of quiet industry. Japanese Knife Imports offers a whole range of knife-related services, not just sharpening but rehandling, engraving, and knife-sharpening classes. I was greeted within seconds of walking in, by both the owner and the guy working there, who not only helped me out but gave me a full and thoroughly welcome education on my knives. I was curious about why my Aritsugu knife rusted so easily, and he explained the difference between stainless and carbon steel, and advised me on how to treat the carbon steel (unfortunately, the advice was to wipe the knife immediately after every use). The whole place was suffused with an obvious passion, an intense American interest and familiarity with this particular alleyway of Japanese culture. I'd planned to drop off the knives for sharpening and pick them up another day, and was pleasantly surprised that they'd be taken care of in the next fifteen minutes. That gave me enough time to attend to another errand and come back. Parking was still available on Wilshire, and my knives were ready to go. The sharpening fee was $25 per knife, and included rust removal and an apparently minor repair, of a broken tip on my smallest knife. I've been chopping happily since I brought our knives back home, and they are 100% as good as new. I hope they stay sharp for a while, but I'm glad I know where to go when they lose their edge.

I took the knife to Johnny who sharpened it better than new without batting an eye. I also brought in two very old vintage scissors inherited from my mom who brought them from her home country over 5 decades ago. These scissors were precious to me, as I inherited them when she passed away. They were among the few things I was able to recognize and dig out of the Eaton fire rubble that was once my home. I brought them to Johnny just to see if he could clean them so I could display them in our rebuild and he did not disappoint. Not only did he clean the large one, but he was able to separate the blades and sharpen them, too. Johnny asked for my mom's name so that he could think about her as he worked on the knives. It meant so much to me that he made that effort and connection. His passion for his work shines and I feel incredibly fortunate to have such an artist nearby.
